Our Master of Research (MRes) programme will develop you into a high-calibre, reflective psychology specialist skilled in delivering evidence-based research. The course is designed for those who wish to enhance their career prospects by taking their research skills to the next level. It differs from more traditional taught masters programmes – such as an MSc –because of its focus on enhancing research methods and skills. Covering both quantitative and qualitative approaches, you will gain a thorough grounding in the methods and processes which underpin original research in psychology and then conduct your own major independent research project under expert supervision.
The course offers an ideal foundation for students who aspire to doctoral studies in the future but may not be able to commit to a PhD at this stage of their career. If, however, you decide to progress to a PhD at Derby, your MRes qualification will count as stage one of your doctoral programme.
You will be allocated a research project supervisor who will oversee your progress and mentor you through your development as an active, engaged researcher. We encourage you to design research projects which relate directly to real-world issues. There may be opportunities to work with some of our partners across the voluntary and charitable sectors to deliver research findings which help them shape their future services. If you are interested in progressing to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Derby, your MRes qualification will count as stage one of your doctoral programme.
This programme trains you in the fundamental aspects of quantitative and qualitative research, including research design, data collection and data analysis, and provides practical, ‘hands-on’ experience.

For more than ten years now, the programme has been recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council(ESRC) as providing the generic and specific research training required by students in receipt of ESRC studentship awards.
Since 2011, the programme has been the research methods training masters for the psychology pathway within the Goldsmiths and Queen Mary ESRC-funded Doctoral Training Centre (2011-2015).
Students in receipt of an ESRC 1+3 PhD studentship in the psychology pathway have to take this course as the first year of a 4-year PhD programme; students who have completed the Masters self-funded, are eligible to bid for an ESRC funded +3 PhD studentship in the psychology pathway at Goldsmiths or Queen Mary.
The MRes runs for one academic year full-time or two years part-time. Most of the lectures, seminars and workshops on the programme run in the first two terms, but you are expected to pursue your studies beyond formal term times, particularly in respect of your research project.
Lectures, seminars and workshops for the programme are timetabled mainly for Mondays and Tuesdays, but you may occasionally be required to attend other seminars and workshops held by the Department and College. You must take all the modules listed in the syllabus.

Research Project (60 credits)
You will produce an empirical piece of research leading to a research project, supervised by at least one member of the lecturing staff in the Department. The project provides invaluable, practical ‘hands on’ experience of evaluating a particular research question. You have the opportunity to set your research question, determine and apply the methods to obtain the answers, and present, discuss and interpret the results. You normally start your project in the second term, together with necessary literature reviews and research design. Work on your project will continue full-time following the formal examinations in May up until project submission in mid-September.

You are also required to attend some of the Department’s programme of Invited Speakers’ talks given by distinguished academics in psychology, and to produce a written critique on one of these. You are welcome to attend the Department’s other seminar series, which are hosted by eminent academics and practitioners.

The Master of Research (MRes) programme provides high quality and professionally relevant training in research methods and analysis for health, psychology and biomedical science graduates.
Through the taught modules students will develop their research skills, including critically appraising literature, developing research proposals, laboratory techniques, project management, presenting findings (through oral, written and digital media) and applying for funding. Students will be introduced to a wide range of methodologies and practical techniques relevant to their discipline. Training will be provided in research governance and ethical procedures to ensure students are prepared for work as professional researchers.
Students will conduct two substantial research studies in a topic of their choice, supervised by experienced members of academic staff. These studies will be written up in the form of journal articles and will form a substantial component of the credits for the MRes award.
This award prepares you for a future in research and progression on to PhD studies.

There are subject specific and three shared modules which prepare you for your area of research and develop your skills as a researcher.
Students will complete a dissertation proposal (10 credits) and associated ethics application. This is followed by the dissertation which counts for 100 credits. The dissertation is written as two research papers which address two discrete areas of the research project. The dissertation will involve all the elements of the research process from the design of the study, data collection, analysis of findings and write up in the format of a journal article. Students will be supervised by two members of staff to complete their dissertation. Students will be matched with appropriate staff members who have expertise in the chosen topic and/or methodology.
The MRes programme comprises 180 credits of which 110 are gained from completing a dissertation proposal and dissertation on the students chosen topic. Therefore the programme is largely independent research, with the support of academic supervisors. The 70 credits of specialised research taught modules ensure you will be equipped with the knowledge, practical and professional skills to engage in your chosen research area and also to provide you with a broader knowledge base of research methodologies. The taught based modules will involve a variety of different learning and teaching methods including: lectures, seminars, small group work, workshops, online learning, tutorials and self-directed learning.
Each student will be allocated two members of staff to supervise their dissertation and a separate personal tutor. Your personal tutor will support you with pastoral care and advice for career planning, e.g. supporting you to complete a personal development plan.
Each module has its own form of assessment. The majority of modules are assessed via coursework, including research reviews, reports, essays and presentations. The dissertation will be written up in the format of two journal articles.
MRes graduates will be well placed for PhD level study or a career that involves carrying out, critically appraising or applying research findings. Evidence based practice means that a knowledge and understanding of research is essential in all health related domains so that health care providers are able to interpret previous research findings, as well as contributing to the process of designing and carrying out research projects. Graduates will also be well equipped in roles which involve scientific writing, analysis of research, designing or administering research projects and development of research portfolios.
This course will equip you with a wide range of theoretical knowledge of research methods, and the ability to apply this knowledge within the field of psychology or other areas of social science.
Our students leave with a toolkit of methods to use in their future research projects. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop your practical skills in specific research methods; develop your theoretical thinking about research; and work closely on several of your own projects with an academic who is an active and leading researcher in their field.
The objective is to equip you with the skills to design, conduct, analyse and report a wide range of research projects and make you an efficient consumer of other people’s research. You will also acquire the communication skills and other key skills necessary to become an excellent researcher.
This MRes is delivered by the Economics & Social Research Council (ESRC), specifically, as part of the larger South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP). It can be taken as a course in its own right or as part of the 1+3 (MRes + PhD) pathway, which enables successful graduates to proceed to a PhD.
If you apply for the 1+3 you must indicate your preferred PhD route in your application. Progression from the MRes to the MPhil or PhD stage is dependent on an acceptable level of achievement.
