Teaching & Assessment

This course is taught predominantly by staff from the School of Medicine and guest lecturers from further afield.

The full time MPH course lasts for one year. The taught component takes nine months and is followed by research leading to a dissertation. All students initially enrol on a diploma programme (DipPubH) which includes the taught component only. To progress to the Masters programme and undertake the Masters dissertation students must obtain an overall pass of 60% in the taught component. Both programmes may be undertaken on a part-time basis.

The course is focussed on the academic needs of its students but also provides emotional and pastoral care as required. The inclusion of optional modules creates flexibility, which allows students to tailor the MPH to their specific requirements.

Students have a spacious teaching room with networked computers at their disposal

Lecturers operate an open door policy and students are encouraged to seek advice/help at any time

How you will be assessed

The student's performance is monitored by continuous assessment throughout the programme. Written and oral examinations are held in December, March and May. Examinations are graded passes (A to D) or fail.

Students must obtain grade D or above in all written and oral examinations in order to be awarded the Diploma.

To be eligible to progress from the Diploma onto the Masters, students must pass the examination of each subject and achieve a minimum overall pass at B or above (60%).

Careers

The MPH prepares students for research and management careers in public health and also a variety of medical and health related disciplines.

Previous students graduating with the MPH from Dundee have taken up management positions in public health practice, nursing, professions allied to medicine, education, government, WHO and NGOs; and research positions within academic public health, general practice, acute medicine, nursing, professions allied to medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry and environmental health.

The MPH also provides an ideal springboard for further postgraduate study at PhD and MD level.

Master of Public Health (MPH)

The UBC Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program, established in 2008 as part of the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH), is a practicum-based program which is normally completed in two years (three academic terms and one term devoted to a practicum). MPH training integrates epidemiology; biostatistics; the social, biological and environmental determinants of health locally and globally; disease prevention and health systems policy and management. We offer our students a solid grounding in epidemiological methods and quantitative analysis, a rigorous curriculum with a wide range of core, required and elective public health courses, faculty who are leaders in public health research and practice, and hands-on training through the 12-week field practicum. MPH course requirements can be completed as part of a traditional, on-campus educational experience or can be completed in a Distributed Learning (DL) format, where courses are scheduled over three weekends during the semester.

The MPH can also be combined with the Master of Science in Nursing or the Diploma in Dental Public Health. Our aim is to create leaders in public health who can turn evidence into practice and improve the health of populations.

What makes the program unique?

The UBC MPH program is one of two in Canada that is available in two educational delivery formats. There is the traditional, classroom-based curriculum where students come to campus weekly to attend courses and the Distributed Learning (DL) format where students come to campus over three weekends during the semester. The DL format provides working public health professionals and remotely located professionals across B.C. and Canada the opportunity to obtain their MPH degree without interrupting their careers.

Students are also able to schedule their practicum any term after completing their first-year required courses. This adds considerable program flexibility and allows students to take advantage of practica opportunities throughout their second year. Our students have completed practica placements in local, provincial and federal health agencies, not-for-profit, academic and global health organizations (e.g., BC Centre for Disease Control, Alberta Health Services, World Health Organization, BC Children's Hospital, City of Vancouver etc.).

Master of Public Health and Diploma in Dental Public Health (MPHDPH)

This combined non-clinical, non-thesis program allows students to advance their knowledge in dental public health, an area of dentistry focused in promoting oral health as well as preventing and controlling oral and dental diseases. The program encompasses education, fieldwork, and public service components that contribute to the health and sociocultural progress of Canadians. The curriculum is ingrained in critical thinking and evidence-based practice combining a broad spectrum of courses from the UBC School of Population and Public Health and the Faculty of Dentistry. The fieldwork experience comes in the format of a practicum involving community participation and research practice at local, national or international partnering organization. The practicum focuses on the assessment of the oral health needs of the community, specially the marginalized and disadvantaged; development and implementation of oral health policy; and provision of programs and services that address oral health issues of people with special needs, including not limited to First Nations, intravenous drug users, immigrants and refugees, and low income/working poor.

What makes the program unique?

This graduate program is the only in Canada to be course-based and to offer two degrees, a Masters in Public Health combined with a Diploma in Dental Public Health. The array of faculty members teaching the didactic courses at the School of Population and Public Health and at the Faculty of Dentistry brings a diversity of expertise, experience and knowledge in the field of public health. The not-for-profit organizations and community connections enable students to have access to specific resources and hands-on opportunities that are ideal to the practice of dental public health. British Columbia in particular plays a unique role in dental public health in Canada via its five health authorities that currently have various dental public health initiatives targeting low-income families, pregnant women and Aboriginal Peoples, specifically within the First Nations Health Authority. The graduate students from this combined program can collaborate with these authorities via course work and fieldwork activities.

Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Nursing (MPH/MSN)

The Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Nursing is a unique dual degree program offered at the University of British Columbia. This program is jointly offered by the School of Population and Public Health and the School of Nursing.

Nurses constitute the largest group of professionals in the public health work force. The MPH/MSN joint degree program will produce advanced practice public health nurses who have integrated knowledge and training in epidemiology, biostatistics, health service management, population-focused nursing interventions, policy development, research, and leadership skills and are capable of applying them to a diverse range of public health issues in interdisciplinary environments.

The MPH degree is currently the most widely recognized professional credential for leadership in public health, while the MSN provides advanced practice, nursing management, and research skills for supporting public health nurse leaders, and evaluating public health nursing practice. In addition, nurses in the MPH/MSN program will have access to a variety of courses in either School that address core competencies as defined by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Students in the program will have the opportunity in research and practical experience through a thesis in Nursing and a practicum in the MPH program. These requirements will enable graduates to be well prepared for admission to doctoral programs if they so desire.

This modular multidisciplinary programme in public health offers a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Master in Public Health. It is an exciting and engaging programme developed in response to Public Health professionals around the world and delivered by global academic and field experts in public health and health systems. The Masters builds upon the well-established and successful Master in Public Health through the addition of modules which contextualise and apply public health topics and skills in terms of low- and middle- income countries

The MPH (Global Health) degree is an internationally recognised qualification in public health. This course aimed at professionals already working in low- and middle-income countries or those aiming in the future to work in health care in such setting.

It attracts people with a wide range of professional backgrounds, from those who want a career in Public Health to those who just want to learn more about epidemiology and statistics for research or health service evaluation. It is increasingly accessed by students who have completed a primary degree in a related subject and are wondering what to do next.

This is a modular multidisciplinary programme in public health, which offers a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) and a Master in Public Health (180 credits). The course follows the same structure as the normal MPH but has extra compulsory modules. As well as the three core MPH modules, you will study two additional core modules:

You will also carry out a dissertation based upon research conducted on low and middle-income country health or health systems topics. These can be based in Birmingham, such as systematic reviews and data analysis of large data bases, or based upon original data collection in the field in immigrant communities living in the UK or in low and middle-income countries (either a candidates own country or where a supervisor has links). Field trip work might be covered by supervisor grants but in most cases must be supplied by the students or their sponsors as course fees do not include travel and field work expenses. Supervisors are experts in a range of internationally relevant public health topics with projects in numerous low and middle-income countries.

The MPH (Global Health) programme can be studied either full-time, part-time or over a maximum of five years by flexible learning. Overseas students may only study the MPH (Global Health) full-time. Teaching takes place in one-week blocks. The course covers many of the areas necessary for sitting the Part A examination of the Faculty of Public Health.

The course is delivered in an environment that combines the pragmatism and ‘can do’ spirit of a modern dynamic health service with the rigour, discipline, and high standards of a premier Russell Group University.

The aim of this programme is to provide students with an enhanced preparation for continuing academic study or Part A of the Membership of the Faculty of Public Health (UK) examination.

A wider range of skills and expertise than can be covered in the standard MPH is often requested by employers and individuals who want to be knowledgeable about a wider range of topic areas.

This programme provides a broader version of the current MPHprogramme. To acquire and MPH (SEAL), students need to complete 170 credits of taught modules and complete a 60 credit dissertation, as opposed to the usual 120 credits of taught modules. By being formally assessed and accredited in more modules, the MPH (SEAL) allows students to demonstrate their wider competency range.

Why study Palliative Care Research at Dundee?

Dundee is ideally placed to deliver the MPH in Palliative Care. The Division of Population Health Sciences has several internationally recognised research programmes, with associated academic and research staff, and the Division also houses the renowned Health Informatics Centre (HIC) which provides researchers access to anonymised record-linked data. This includes routinely collected NHS patient datasets for the whole population.

The MPH degree has been run successfully in Dundee for over 25 years and our past students now contribute to the global public health workforce. The MPH Palliative Care Research presents an opportunity to integrate public health with quality palliative care research and the clinical palliative care services. Research led supervision

The Co-Director of the course, Dr Deans Buchanan, was recently appointed Consultant in Palliative Medicine. The Tayside Palliative Care Service is well placed to support excellence in research and in research training. The varied clinical settings throughout Tayside provide an excellent basis for research projects. Clinicians from within the palliative care service will supervise dissertations and include: Dr Rosie Conway, Dr Claire Douglas, Dr Fiona McFatter, Dr Martin Leiper and Dr Alison Morrison. In addition, Dr Bridget Johnston, Reader in Palliative Care (School of Nursing and Midwifery) will also contribute to the teaching and supervision of students.

Aims of the Programme

This course will provide you with:

Teaching & Assessment

This course is based in the School of Medicine. The MPH in Palliative Care Research degree course starts in September each year and lasts for 12 months on a full time basis, or 24 months on a part time basis.

Dissertation
The purpose of the dissertation is to enable students to write a dissertation which utilises all of the knowledge and expertise that they have acquired during the taught component of the course.

How you will be assessed

Performance is monitored by formal examinations and continuous assessment. Formative assessment is delivered through group and individual feedback during the tutorials, discussion sessions and on coursework. Summative assessment is based on assignments and examinations. Examinations are marked by two independent members of the School who are blinded to student identity. Guidelines for markers are provided. The dissertations are also double marked.

An MPH (Palliative Care Research) will enhance the employability of professionals interested in palliative care research.

For Specialty Trainees in Palliative Medicine this will add distinct skills sets and an essential understanding of both research and public health issues. Such qualifications will open job opportunities in academic medicine and at policy development levels. Residential induction

A three-day residential course is held at the University at the beginning of the academic year.

The course is designed to introduce you to the content and technology used throughout the programmes. It is also an opportunity for you to meet academic, e-learning and support staff.

You are encouraged to attend the residential course and many students find it very beneficial.

However, due to the international nature of our programmes, attendance is not compulsory.

The residential course includes:

  • an introduction to the core units;
  • an opportunity to meet tutors, e-learning support staff and administrators;
  • an introduction to the online learning environment;
  • an introduction to the library and e-resources at Manchester;
  • an opportunity to present your work and hear about work undertaken by other students.

You will be required to provide your own transport and accommodation for the residential course.

Confirmation of attendance on the residential induction will be sought once you have applied for the course.

Online induction

We offer an online induction unit for all students. This is ideal if you cannot attend the residential, as it covers the basic information that you will need to get started on the online programme.

Our e-learning team will also run online drop-in sessions for all students from the start of Semester 1, where there will be an opportunity to ask any questions you may have as you begin your studies.

Scholarship induction

Each year, staff from our programmes will visit one or more of the African scholarship countries to host an induction session for scholarship students.

This will be similar to the residential induction hosted at Manchester.

Teaching and learning

This course is mostly delivered online, allowing you to study flexibly at a pace that suits your own requirements. A learning structure with a recommended pace is in place to ensure your progression, both within an individual unit and across the course as a whole.

There are a number of course units that require your participation throughout, and some with a face to face element. Please contact  if this is likely to be a problem.

Coursework and assessment

You will use a number of assessed and non-assessed activities to develop key skills and expand your knowledge base. There are no written exams; assessment is based on assignments and other activities such as moderated discussion boards and group work.

Course unit details

The MPH and PG Diploma courses both have two core units that you must complete: Evidence Based Practice and Fundamentals of Epidemiology.

You are then able to select your remaining six units from a pool of more than 15 options, including some blended learning and face-to-face study options.

If you elect to study the Global Health specialist stream, you will have an additional core unit.

Students on the PGCert are required to complete Evidence Based Practice as a core unit and then you can choose to study any three units, of those available for the MPH.

After completing all of the taught units, students on the MPH degree will study for their dissertation. You will be able to choose from a range of different dissertation models designed to cater for different work situations and interests. Students then submit their own proposal for review and discussion. When your proposal is approved you will be assigned a dissertation tutor.

Career opportunities

Most of our students complete the course part-time while working in a wide variety of jobs and sectors.

Some use their experience and qualification to help them move into predominantly public health-related roles.

Many of our students - eg health promotion staff, GPs, hospital doctors, pharmacists, infection control nurses, managers and researchers - take the course to give them public health skills and expertise to apply within their own profession and/or setting.

Intercalating medical students from Manchester and elsewhere take the MPH if they are interested in careers in public health, general practice or work in a low income country.

Overview

The Master of Public Health (MPH) programme online has been designed for busy health professionals looking to gain a recognised qualification from a top UK university while continuing to work at the same time.

This course will provide students with a systematic and critical understanding of the key concepts underlying public health. Through its alignment with the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework this course will develop your ability to undertake independent research culminating in a dissertation project as a capstone to your studies.

The MPH course is the most comprehensive of our Public Health programmes, incorporating the opportunity to complete an independent piece of original research.

Building on the Postgraduate Diploma module base, you will also study research design and critical appraisal and complete a dissertation project of your choosing. Introduction

Studying online gives you the freedom to study when and where it suits you – at home, during your lunch hour or anywhere else you have internet access.

All of our online courses have an indicative study duration which is a guide to how long your course will take to complete. The actual duration may be longer or shorter depending on your speed of study, study options chosen and module availability. It’s possible to complete your studies faster than the indicative course duration by doubling up on modules at certain times; however, minimum study durations do apply.

All of our courses have regular start dates throughout the year. Our academic year is organised into modules, typically with a one- or two-week break between modules and a structured three-week break for the Christmas period. Students will receive a course timetable during the application process.

Teaching methods and style

As we are a 100% online university, we utilise a Virtual Learning Environment instead of a traditional campus. The system tracks and manages the learning process in real-time and provides you with immediate access to your learning materials.

This learning platform allows both students and tutors to actively take part in real-time conversations and you can listen to, and view, live lectures and seminars over the internet. All courses are delivered in English only.

You are supported throughout your course by a dedicated Student Adviser and have the opportunity to regularly interact with fellow students and your tutor. To ensure you receive the support you need from your tutor, we cap our class sizes at 20 students.

Assessment

Our MPH course includes both compulsory and optional modules, so you can tailor the content of your course to more closely fit your interests and aspirations.

We adopt an assignment-based approach to assessment instead of exams. Assessment for the MPH will be based on a combination of written assignments, engagement in online discussion forums and the completion of a dissertation based on an individual research project.

You will be able to see your current provisional marks from the start of the programme, allowing you to evaluate the success of your current study methods and clearly identify areas to improve. We believe that this transparency gives you the information you need to make the most of your Masters course.

We achieve this by:

  • showing your marks clearly in your gradebook, which can be viewed whenever you log onto the learning platform;
  • the rapid turnaround of work assessed to ensure that your gradebook is always up to date;
  • assessing your work throughout the module rather than waiting for end of year exams;

Course Description

The Department of Public Health and Policy at the University of Liverpool has a flourishing research portfolio in Public Health and Health Inequalities. The University of Liverpool has been at the forefront of Public Health for over 150 years and now has an influential voice on the world stage and close links with many institutions, disciplines and public health bodies. The aim of the Department is to contribute to the improvement and maintenance of the health of people, locally, nationally and internationally, through:
• excellence in education and research
• the development of a learning environment that encourages staff and students to fulfil their potential

The Department provides advice to governmental policy makers locally, nationally and internationally and hosts the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Policy Research on the Social Determinants of Health. The Department is home to a multi-disciplinary team of academic staff drawn from a range of subjects including medical and health sciences, epidemiology, sociology, community development, policy analysis, statistics, and history. It is actively involved in research, education and health service work related to promoting the health of the public.

The Master of Public Health programme is delivered at both our Liverpool and London campuses. On completion of the Master of Public Health, students should have a foundation in the science and art of public health, including an understanding of the concepts of health and disease and factors, which may affect these. The resulting knowledge, skills and attitudes should enable them to put public health principles into effect in a variety of settings including research, practice and the interface of applied research. They will be able to demonstrate an in-depth systematic understanding of public health research and all students carry out a small-scale original research project that conveys the public health context and implications.

Public Health encompasses a broad range of subjects some of which require traditional analytical scientific thinking (for example statistics) whilst others require a more flexible and creative approach (for example health inequalities). The practice of effective public health requires the synthesis of these aspects and the MPH is designed to enable students to gain competence in the application of these disciplines.

The modules are designed to cover the set syllabus whilst allowing students the flexibility to learn in a way and time best suited to their individual needs. Areas that are most effectively covered by interaction and discussion, as well as those that may be conceptually difficult, are covered by direct contact. Even here a didactic teaching style is used only as necessary, with the emphasis of teaching being on interaction and experiential learning. The intention is to develop the ability in students for self-directed learning, so the styles of teaching and learning change in emphasis through the modules. In the early stages the material is subject based but as the student matures in knowledge and skill the material becomes more interactive and problem solving in approach. Broadly a student will be encouraged and guided in the development of five key areas:

1. In-depth knowledge of the main disciplines of public health.
2. Ability in self-directed learning and management of personal development.
3. Ability to critically evaluate, reflect and analyse.
4. Effective communication of ideas in both written and spoken formats.
5. Ability to work effectively both alone and in teams.

The programme offers the option of full-time study over one year, or part-time for up to 3 years for students who wish to study while in employment and where the programme can form an integral part of their professional development.

**Additional Entry Requirement Information

The Master of Public Health (MPH) programme is available to any University graduate in a health or health-related profession, as well as non-health-related graduates and others approved by the University. This includes:

• Graduates in medicine of an approved university who have not less than one year (and preferably longer) post-registration professional experience;
• Other health-related graduates of an approved university or other institution who have not less than two years of professional experience;
• Non-health-related graduates, and others who have satisfied the requirements of approved Exam Boards, or have satisfied the University that they are suitably qualified to undertake a postgraduate course. They must have at least three years approved professional experience, and either completed the final examination of an approved professional institution, or obtained some other qualification approved for this purpose by the University.
• In addition, applicants require a GCSE Grade C or GCE O Level pass in Mathematics and English, or an equivalent qualification.

Description

The Master of Public Health (MPH) course is an intensive study programme that aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge informing the key domains of public health.

You will:

  • explore the underpinning theoretical frameworks which draw upon a range of disciplines reflecting the wider determinants of health and ill-health. 
  • examine the effectiveness of public health interventions, services and policies. 
  • develop skills of critical appraisal through understanding different research designs and methods that are informing an emerging evidence based public health.
  • be able to put public health principles into effect in a variety of settings and appreciate the complexities of evolving public health concerns and population health needs.
  • study the breadth of public health or pursue a specialist pathway that better meets your specific career advancement needs. 

All students are enrolled onto the Master of Public Health which addresses the key domains of public health practice. The course is made up of optional and required modules.

The required modules are:

  • Basic Epidemiology & Statistics for Public Health,
  • Prevention and Control of Communicable Disease 
  • and a Dissertation Project.

Once accepted onto the course, you may wish to pursue a specialist pathway by selecting the additional required/compulsory modules.

If you are interested in the :

  • Primary Care pathway, you will need to select the module Delivering Public Health in Primary Care: from Theory to Practice
  • Environmental Health pathway will require either the Essentials of Environmental Public Health Science and/or Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection modules
  • Allied Health pathway will require you to study the Exercise as Medicine module

You will also explore a range of optional modules to bring your total credit value up to 180, allowing you to create a unique study plan that reflects your interests.

If you are studying full-time, you will complete the course in one year, from September to September. If you are studying part-time, your programme will take two years to complete.

In addition to the required modules (which total 90 credits), part-time students should plan to take 30-45 optional module credits in their first year and 45-60 optional module credits in their second year.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

We use lectures, seminars and group tutorials to deliver most of the modules on the programme. You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of unseen written examinations, coursework and presentations. The research project and dissertation will be assessed on an extended piece of writing. 

Examinations are mainly held during Examination Period 1 (January) and Examination Period 2 (May / early June). The ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ examination is, however, normally held during Examination Period 3 (August).

Resit and replacement examinations are normally scheduled during Examination Period 3 (August). Resit and replacement examinations for the 'Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection' module are normally held during the following Examination Period (January).

You’ll submit your first piece of summative coursework towards the end of Term 1, and coursework submissions continue into April. The coursework for the ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ module is submitted in August.

The dissertation is submitted in early September (part-time students submit their dissertation at the end of their second year). 

The formal teaching, self-directed study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. They are however, subject to change.
