The PGCE Secondary (Modern Foreign Languages) is an innovative and intensive nine-month course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching in the secondary sector. The PGCE Modern Foreign Languages will provide student teachers with an appropriate knowledge of a range of theories and experiences in practical teaching situations to allow pupils to achieve their potential in modern foreign languages and develop a love of languages.
You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools on completion of the course.
The course is organised in partnership with schools around Kent and Medway (where undertaken in Canterbury), where you will spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching in two different schools.
All PGCE courses cover three main areas: Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies. However, all learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study will be informed by and inform practice.
PGCE students will be placed in two schools for a mixture of blocked time and serial (e.g. one day a week) time adding up to meet the current Government requirement for a minimum 120 days in school.
You can exit the PGCE courses with one of two awards. The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is awarded to those students who gain less than 40 Level 7credits, but who pass all modules, gaining 100 or 120 Level 6 credits. If you achieve 40 or 60 Level 7 credits and pass all the modules, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). All students completing a PGCE will also be recommended for QTS.
The course is for people who want to become qualified teachers.
• Professional Studies
Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.
• Curriculum Studies
This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.
• Enhanced Studies
The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.
Across the PGCE year there is an equivalent of 12 weeks of taught input which take place at university on the Canterbury Campus. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of seminar and workshop activity. There will also be a small number of lecture inputs.
Across the PGCE year there is the equivalent of 24 weeks spent in school. Student teachers will learn in a variety of ways in school, including from experienced mentors, through observing others and through experience. There is also a degree of individual support for learning offered in this course provided by mentors in school and the university tutors.
Tutors and mentors who lead the learning on this programme are all qualified teachers.
You will be assessed in two main ways via academic assignments and assessment of your teaching.
You will submit academic assignments for 20 credits in each curriculum, professional and enhanced studies modules. Each submission will include a written element, but you may also be assessed via presentations or practical performances as relevant to your chosen subject options.
Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to teach in schools as qualified teachers

Train to become an outstanding teacher of Secondary Modern Languages with Liverpool John Moores University. Graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
This is an intensive, full time programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic PGDE award. University-based study includes: a full time block of three weeks at the start of the course in September; one day per week until January; week-long, full time study blocks between January and June and a number of conference days.
Placements are organised in our Partnership schools in the Greater Merseyside area. For the majority of the training you will gain your teaching experience in a “Home School” with a six week placement in an “alternative” school after Christmas. This innovative model ensures that you feel genuinely part of the staff whilst on school placement and can monitor and gain satisfaction from your impact on your pupils’ progress over time.
You will also be allocated a Teacher Mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your Mentor will be supported by your LJMU Tutor who will visit your school several times to monitor your progress. Additional professional development sessions are organised in school during placements.
Tutorial support is an important part of the LJMU learning process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve your potential. Your Personal Tutor will support your academic and professional development and will meet with you formally during the year.
You will undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation to support your course assignments and school-based work and should be prepared to work some evenings and weekend.
University-based training takes place at the IM Marsh campus just four miles from the city centre. Here you will find independent study spaces with IT facilities, a library, access to student welfare and support, a gym and other sports facilities plus a café and shop.
The IM Marsh Library houses the main collections linked to this course and is open from 8am until 11pm during term time. You will also have access to the 24 hour, city centre Aldham Robarts and Avril Robarts libraries.
The University-element of the programme is based around six core modules focusing on:
-Professional Practice (a series of school-based investigations of current issues)
-Developing Reflective Professional Practice (enabling you to effectively evaluate your school-based practice)
-Subject Pedagogy in Modern Foreign Languages (in depth support and practical training in your subject specialist area, drawing on the latest research and classroom-based innovation)
-Pedagogy in Practice (focusing on the skills required for effective teaching and learning including medium-term planning and assessment in your subject)
-Learning Teaching and Assessment (developing your skills in school-based action research so that you can identify what works best for your learners)
-Inclusion (ensuring you are fully prepared to meet the diverse needs of your classes)
The information listed in the section entitled ‘What you will study’ is an overview of the academic content of the programme that will take the form of either core or option modules. Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal Academic Framework review, so may be subject to change. Students will be required to undertake modules that the University designates as core and will have a choice of designated option modules. Additionally, option modules may be offered subject to meeting minimum student numbers.
Academic Framework reviews are conducted by LJMU from time to time to ensure that academic standards continue to be maintained. A review is currently in progress and will be operational for the academic year 2016/2017. Final details of this programme’s designated core and option modules will be made available on LJMU’s website as soon as possible and prior to formal enrolment for the academic year 2016/2017.

School Direct (Tuition Fee) is a route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Trainees join other student teachers on the established Languages PGCE programme at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE), whilst undertaking their teaching experience at their host school or alliance.
This programme enables students to engage critically with a number of approaches and issues relating to languages education, such as the teaching of grammar, the incorporation of literature into lessons, target language use and the monitoring and assessment of pupils' learning. It incorporates a range of approaches to effective, inclusive learning, and develops a student’s professionalism and critical awareness to a high level. Wherever possible, we provide opportunities for trainees to gain experience at Key Stage 5 (post-16 age range).
Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.
The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.
Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).
Four pathways are available: European languages, European language with EAL (English as an Additional Language) enhancement, Mandarin Chinese with a European Language, and Mandarin Chinese with EAL enhancement.
EAL is primarily intended for those students who can offer only one language.
You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with subject specialist mentors who support you through your school placements.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placement at the host school or alliance. Assessment is by the observation of practical teaching, assignments and a portfolio (which links into continuing professional development in the induction year).

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as languages teachers and heads of department in schools, while others have jobs using the skills they have developed on the programme. Graduates in this area can also be found working as senior leaders in schools.
Graduates of the Secondary PGCE programme are highly employable and sought after by schools and colleges in London and beyond. Almost all graduates secure their first teaching post by the time they finish the PGCE programme. Graduates of the programme also have great career prospects, with many becoming Head of Department or a Head of Year within 2-5 years, often acting, in their schools, as mentors to new PGCE student teachers. Many of our graduates become senior teachers (such as Assistant Headteachers or Head of a Faculty) in 5-8 years of graduating, and some are now Headteachers. Others have developed their careers as subject specialist teachers and educators, both becoming lead teachers in the classroom and researching, writing and advising other teachers themselves. The Secondary PGCE Programme is a springboard into a rewarding career, not just as a skilled teacher, but as an educational leader.
The Languages PGCE programme places a strong emphasis on cultural knowledge, use of literature in the languages classroom, pupils' use of target language and broader aspects of language learning. This includes issues related to bilingual learners and English as an additional language and other areas such as information and communications technology and digital, video and multimedia production.
The IOE has well-established partnerships with cultural and educational institutions across London, as well as European and Chinese universities and teacher training institutions. Our partnership with over 200 secondary schools and colleges in Greater London and beyond enables each of our students to become a skilled and confident teacher in their chosen subject specialism.
The PGCE is informed by research, including research carried out by PGCE tutors into target language use, the teaching of literature and the storyline approach. The programme includes a number of innovative projects, such as the British Film Institute Film Project and our own Literature Project, which supports the development of materials for classroom practice.
This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).
Students appreciate the creative and modern approach to language teaching provided by the Modern Languages course.
Content includes thorough coverage of National Curriculum and assessment requirements combined with a focus on creativity in lesson planning and delivery.
Students will develop their understanding of how children acquire additional languages and how to best support their learning in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Particular attention is paid to the effective teaching of grammar to young learners and to the development of independent learners.
Students will develop a range of strategies to motivate young learners effectively, including through the use of song, drama and ICT.
As part of the course students spend some time observing in Key Stage 2 and benefit from joint training with students on the Primary PGCE MFL specialism.
There are opportunities for students to continue to improve their second foreign language.
Sessions are delivered at the Bognor Regis campus but also include a number of off-site visits to local partnership schools; there are also opportunities to benefit from the expertise of visiting speakers.
Our course includes a well-respected summer conference to which prospective, current and past students are invited along with local teachers, and which provides the opportunity to hear a number of national speakers present on a variety of engaging and thought-provoking topics.
The Modern Foreign Languages modules are complemented by a Professional Studies programme, which is also based at Bognor Regis.
There is also the option to gain some experience at Key Stage 2. The subject specific element of the course is delivered at our Bognor Regis Campus.

This programme prepares you for a career as a secondary school teacher. At the end of the year you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status and will be ready for the next stage of your development as a Newly Qualified Teacher in school. The programme’s delivered full-time over 38 weeks with 70% practical school experience in established partner schools and 30% university-based time, divided between Professional Studies and subject study.
This experience provides you with the opportunity to work alongside serving teachers, learning about the broader roles and skills of teachers and other school staff.
The course is assessed through observation during teaching placements and written assignments.
To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students need to complete three 4,000 word assignments at FHEQ level 7 (Masters), and two blocks of School Experience.
