Although the course provides a final qualification in one language only, during the course you can have experience in the classroom in a second language.

Leeds Trinity University offers Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) (FHEQ Level 6) initial teacher training courses in a number of subject areas. PGCE students are also registered to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification (PGCert) (FHEQ Level 7).

- The Leeds Trinity University PGCE Provider-led programme led by the University with placements in partnership schools. Trainees spend in excess of 24 weeks in schools, undertaking two contrasting teaching placements.
- PGCE School Direct programmes are a partnership between Leeds Trinity University and schools. Trainees normally spend most of their time in schools, with tuition provided by University tutors based at the school, and expert school teachers.

The PGCE Secondary (Modern Foreign Languages) is an innovative and intensive nine-month course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching in the secondary sector. The PGCE Modern Foreign Languages will provide student teachers with an appropriate knowledge of a range of theories and experiences in practical teaching situations to allow pupils to achieve their potential in modern foreign languages and develop a love of languages.

You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools on completion of the course.

The course is organised in partnership with schools around Kent and Medway (where undertaken in Canterbury), where you will spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching in two different schools.

Course detail

All PGCE courses cover three main areas: Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies. However, all learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study will be informed by and inform practice.

PGCE students will be placed in two schools for a mixture of blocked time and serial (e.g. one day a week) time adding up to meet the current Government requirement for a minimum 120 days in school.

You can exit the PGCE courses with one of two awards. The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is awarded to those students who gain less than 40 Level 7credits, but who pass all modules, gaining 100 or 120 Level 6 credits. If you achieve 40 or 60 Level 7 credits and pass all the modules, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). All students completing a PGCE will also be recommended for QTS.

• Professional Studies
Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.

• Curriculum Studies
This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.

• Enhanced Studies
The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.

Format

Across the PGCE year there is an equivalent of 12 weeks of taught input which take place at university on the Canterbury Campus. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of seminar and workshop activity. There will also be a small number of lecture inputs.

Across the PGCE year there is the equivalent of 24 weeks spent in school. Student teachers will learn in a variety of ways in school, including from experienced mentors, through observing others and through experience. There is also a degree of individual support for learning offered in this course provided by mentors in school and the university tutors.

Tutors and mentors who lead the learning on this programme are all qualified teachers.

Assessment

You will be assessed in two main ways via academic assignments and assessment of your teaching.

You will submit academic assignments for 20 credits in each curriculum, professional and enhanced studies modules. Each submission will include a written element, but you may also be assessed via presentations or practical performances as relevant to your chosen subject options.

The PGCE course in Modern Foreign Languages prepares students to teach their main target language to pupils aged 11-18 and, where applicable, their subsidiary language to pupils aged 11-14. The emphasis is on interaction, critical reflection, high linguistic levels, imagination and hard work.

There has never been a more pressing time to teach languages and we aim to promote and extend pupils' experiences so that they are ready to be citizens of our globalised world. We want to prepare passionate linguists who will encourage more pupils into language learning and who are ready to meet the challenges set out by the Welsh Government's Global Futures strategic document.

The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education has excellent graduate employment rates with 99% of graduates going into employment or further study (DLHE 14/15).

Course Overview

The course includes interactive seminars, lectures and workshops. These provide students with key principles, practical ideas and resources that equip them to teach modern foreign languages. 12 weeks of the course are spent in university and 24 in schools. There is an emphasis on developing subject knowledge using ICT, as well as opportunities for group work with native speakers.

During the year the students submit coursework assignments with the possibility of gaining credits towards a Master’s degree. During school placements practising teachers and tutors formally observe and assess a number of lessons. At the end of each term the students receive written reports which summarises their progress towards meeting the standards for the award of QTS.

Course detail

Students appreciate the creative and modern approach to language teaching provided by the Modern Languages course. Content includes thorough coverage of National Curriculum and assessment requirements combined with a focus on creativity in lesson planning and delivery.

Students will develop their understanding of how children acquire additional languages and how to best support their learning in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Particular attention is paid to the effective teaching of grammar to young learners and to the development of independent learners.

Students will develop a range of strategies to motivate young learners effectively, including through the use of song, drama and ICT. As part of the course students spend some time observing in Key Stage 2 and benefit from joint training with students on the Primary PGCE MFL specialism. There are opportunities for students to continue to improve their second foreign language.

Sessions are delivered at the Bognor Regis campus but also include a number of off-site visits to local partnership schools; there are also opportunities to benefit from the expertise of visiting speakers.

Our course includes a well-respected summer conference to which prospective, current and past students are invited along with local teachers, and which provides the opportunity to hear a number of national speakers present on a variety of engaging and thought-provoking topics.

The Modern Foreign Languages modules are complemented by a Professional Studies programme, which is also based at Bognor Regis. There is also the option to gain some experience at Key Stage 2. The subject specific element of the course is delivered at our Bognor Regis Campus.

The course is accredited by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). Module Details

The course is essentially practical and two-thirds of your time will be spent in school where you will be working closely with mentors and other school staff.

Programme Assessment

The course lasts 36 weeks between September and June, with one third of the time spent in University-based sessions such as lectures, group participation and guided reading, and the remainder working in at least two of our partner schools.

You will be supported by tutors while in the university, and by professional and subject mentors while in schools, encouraging the development of teaching skills specifically for the secondary sector and blending work-based learning experience and supervised teaching practice.

The programme offers trainees a choice between the Professional and the Postgraduate route, with the latter allowing trainees to graduate with 60 M-level credits.

The assessment procedures adopted throughout the course are mainly formative in nature and designed to ensure that trainees meet the Standards for Qualifying to Teach.

In each term you will be assessed on:

The development of your teaching skills
A formal assignment
An interview in which you will demonstrate the evidence collected towards the standards including your subject knowledge
Throughout the course you will collate a portfolio of evidence based on schoolwork, observations of teaching, tasks and assignments.

Student Destinations

Career opportunities within teaching are now far wider and more diverse than ever before. After a few years of teaching, relatively recently qualified teachers are able to gain promotion (responsibility) points for leadership within their subject. Alternatively some teachers prefer to pursue a pastoral route and may gain promotion to Year Head or other pastoral roles. There are also opportunities to become a Subject Leader, which allows effective classroom teachers to gain recognition for their excellence in the classroom without needing to move to more administrative positions. After some experience of middle management successful teachers may progress to senior management as Senior Teacher, Deputy Head or Head.

At the end of the training period, more than 90% of the trainees went into full-time employment in schools within the Portsmouth University Partnership.

This programme forms part of our well established department's successful modular MA education programme. Rooted in practical experience, it emphasises the theoretical study of education. In this programme, we reflect on current modern foreign language provision and curricular innovations in the light of policy decisions as well as evaluating international research. Students read widely and collect data from language classrooms or other sources to analyse in collaboration with their peers, aimed at developing practitioner research expertise. The learning is highly interactive and takes place in an agreeable learning community.

We invite language teachers at all levels and those who organise language learning provision from all cultural contexts to participate in the rich intercultural and collaborative learning opportunities this MA offers. The main purpose is to provide opportunities for professionals involved in foreign language education to extend their knowledge through engagement with current research and developments in policy and practice, linking this to critical reflection on their practice.

You achieve qualified teacher status (QTS) equipping you to teach National Curriculum modern languages at Key Stages 3, 4 and post-16. The current shortage of modern-language teachers makes this a great choice of subject to teach at secondary-school level and beyond. Specialist speakers are invited in throughout the year to enhance the learning experience.

Our modern language teacher-training students train to teach in one or more of the three main languages of French, Spanish and German. However, placements and employment prospects are greatly enhanced for those with more than one language to offer, so if you are a single linguist then we may make your place conditional on completing a National College for Teaching and Leadership funded French, Spanish or German extension course in the summer before the course starts.

With our PGCE you complete two contrasting placements in 11–16 or 11–18 settings. This allows you to experience the full progression from Key Stages 3 to post-16. In total you spend around 120 days on placement. While on placement you benefit from excellent support and mentoring from a university-trained mentor. We have placement links with over 600 schools and other institutions, and a third of our students end up being offered teaching jobs where they did a placement.

During the course, you’ll be able to choose to complete either the PGCE or the professional graduate certificate in education (ProfGCE). Both qualifications will earn you QTS status, but the PGCE also gives you 60 credits towards a masters degree.

This is an intensive, full time programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic PGDE award. University-based study includes: a full time block of three weeks at the start of the course; one day per week until January; week-long, full time study blocks between January and June and a number of conference days.
Placements are organised in our Partnership schools in the Greater Merseyside area. For the majority of the training you will gain your teaching experience in a “Home School” with a six week placement in an “alternative” school after Christmas. This innovative model ensures that you feel genuinely part of the staff whilst on school placement and can monitor and gain satisfaction from your impact on your pupils’ progress over time.

You will also be allocated a Teacher Mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your Mentor will be supported by your LJMU Tutor who will visit your school several times to monitor your progress. Additional professional development sessions are organised in school during placements.

Tutorial support is an important part of the LJMU learning process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve your potential. Your Personal Tutor will support your academic and professional development and will meet with you formally during the year.

You will undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation to support your course assignments and school-based work and should be prepared to work some evenings and weekend.

University-based training takes place at the IM Marsh campus just four miles from the city centre. Here you will find independent study spaces with IT facilities, a library, access to student welfare and support, a gym and other sports facilities plus a café and shop.

The IM Marsh Library houses the main collections linked to this course and is open from 8am until 11pm during term time. You will also have access to the 24 hour, city centre Aldham Robarts and Avril Robarts libraries.
