This course was designed in conjunction with The Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM), the leading body for the professional development of direct, data and digital marketing and will develop both the theoretical and practical knowledge of digital and marketing concepts that are vital in today's business environment.

The focus of this programme is to equip future marketing managers with the knowledge and understanding of the traditional academic theories, concepts and frameworks of marketing strategy and planning and be able to apply them in the contemporary digital environment. Students will learn the strategic importance of technical change and innovation in the context of information technology and knowledge management. They will also become highly aware of the regulations, legislation, and codes of practice affecting digital marketing and gain the ability to work with others to formulate appropriate and ethical business solutions.

It is anticipated that a high number of students applying for this course will be in full-time employment. Therefore a number of flexible study routes are offered:

Traditional campus based course

The traditional university campus based route of face to face learning will require weekly attendance over the 15 week semester. Teaching takes place during the daytime and would require attendance at the university.

Full-time route (12 months)

This route require you to take three modules over one semester starting in January and finishing in June. You will then have until December to submit your 20,000-word dissertation. International students will need to study full time and complete the whole course in two semesters due to visa requirements.

Part-time route (24 months)

The part time route will enable modules to be taken over two semesters. Starting in January you will finish the taught element 12 months later and will then have until the following December to complete your 20,000 word dissertation.

Blended route (24 months)

The blended learning route will enable you to study at home for two semesters before progressing to the dissertation. Each semester will include one or two intensive workshops introducing the core subjects, which are then supported extensively by online learning materials, presentations and webinars. Starting in January you will finish the taught element 12 months later and will then have until thefollowing December to complete your 20,000 word dissertation.

Modules

- Contemporary Marketing (20 Credits)
This module provides a theoretical look at the world of consumers and their behaviour in the digital environment, drawing on consumer behaviour, product, brand and communications theories to interpret and understand how consumers are respond to different technologies. This module sets out to enable students to learn how to operationalise the key marketing, consumer behaviour and communication theories to enable students to critically appraise the swiftly changing digital marketing channels in the light of marketing theory.

- Digital and social media (10 credits)
This module provides an intensely practical education in the core digital technologies, such as websites, search, display media, affiliate networks and mobile. Students will explore how they are being used and can assist in the delivery of marketing goals.

- Research methods (20 credits)
This module provides students with the learning, tools and techniques necessary for the completion of their dissertation, the final component for students wishing to obtain a Master's degree in Digital Marketing. Students will learn about the methods and tools of research and develop an understanding of the logic, sequence and structure of a research project, thus enabling students to design a logical structure for their dissertations. The aim of the module is to ensure that students are aware of the vast array of methodologies available to them and facilitating their ability to produce an original piece of work which adds to their existent body of knowledge and will help students explore the sources and types of information required for the research projects and the practical challenges associated with obtaining information.

Employability

The MSc Digital Marketing is designed to produce graduates with advanced expertise. You may find employment in middle to top management positions in large corporates or small charities, in modern e-businesses or public sector organisations. Digital marketing is the way of the business world for the future and the opportunities are vast.

Successful students from other LSBU marketing orientated Masters programmes have entered into many different types of organisations including multinational and global companies, public sector organisations, charities and startups.

The taught component of the LSBU course provides students with the module Marketing in the Digital Environment, which introduces elements of marketing science, changing consumer behaviour, new media, branding, and the communications process. Strategy & Planning for Digital and Social Media Communications (30 credits)
This unit is assessed through one piece of coursework. You are required to develop a digital marketing strategy and plan for an organisation of your choice. The digital skills gap is widely recognised as a major barrier to organisations maximising the benefits of successful digital marketing. The unit takes a detailed view of developing a digital and social media communications strategy and plan. Learn from digital marketing specialists – each with active practitioner experience in their fields, such as email marketing, search, social media, mobile. You will also work on live client briefs – utilising the skills you develop through the unit content.

International Brand Strategy
This unit introduces you to the role and nature of brand development and management within an international environment. You will be introduced to a range of issues such as: the brand development process; brand architecture and management; global v local brand strategy, international macro-environment, international culture, corporate branding; international brand strategy and the role semiotics and marketing communications play in the brand development process. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and exam.

Investigating Business Practice (marketing communications live client brief, 15 credits)
This unit involves working with a client on a live brief with other students. This will develop your communication skills, ability to work with others (students and clients), and will require some independent work to meet the requirements of the brief. The brief is normally a marketing communications issue that needs addressing for an organisation.

Research Methods
This unit covers a range of areas. Initially the focus is on developing your study skills, especially the ability to research and critique journal articles. You will be learning about research philosophy, qualitative and quantitative research methods in order to prepare you for your dissertation.

Dissertation
You will complete an outline topic form in order for a supervisor to be allocated. With the help of your supervisor you will submit initially a research proposal, which is marked and worth 15% of your overall grade for the unit. Once this has been approved you will continue to work under the guidance of your supervisor and complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, relating to marketing communications (worth 85% of your overall grade for this unit). This will be submitted in September at the end of your course.

Module Details

The aim of this programme is to make you aware of the current practices relating to digital marketing. You will become aware of the latest developments in the field and you will also be equipped with the practical skills to implement them.

MA Digital Marketing includes two teaching periods and is followed by 2-3 months of independent study during which time you complete a practical project.

Teaching Period 1

Essentials of Marketing: This will provide you with a solid foundation for the advanced study of marketing. No prior knowledge of marketing is assumed but students will be expected to assimilate information rapidly and reflect upon the concepts discussed.

Contemporary Issues in Marketing: This unit will examine a number of contemporary issues related to marketing theory and practice. The unit will draw extensively on the expertise of industry experts and students will be expected to engage with the issues that marketing managers are dealing with.

Digital Marketing Strategy: The unit focuses on examining the strategies and methods used to design and manage digital media based marketing campaigns. An intrinsic part of this unit is to develop an understanding of the importance of applying a range of analytical and conceptual models to the technical and creative aspects of design of digital media marketing

Teaching Period 2

Digital Communication and Media Development: You will review the digital media development process, assess the potential of a range of applications and use software and multimedia-authoring tools to develop a digital marketing campaign.

Digital Media Marketing Development Project: The project enables you to demonstrate and showcase what you have learnt during the taught programme.

The project consists of:
Systems specification for a digital marketing campaign
Functional model/prototype developed from the above, using appropriate software tools
Critical assessment of the project in terms of design, functionality and end user interface

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods range from tutor-led presentation of material, in-class exercises to case study analysis, problem solving exercises, student presentation and in-class discussion. There will be significant use and exploration of marketing software systems and media application software.

Assessment will take the form of coursework assignments which may involve group work, presentations, case study analyses or reports and examinations which may be closed or open book. You will be allocated a personal tutor for the duration of their programme to offer you help and advice during your studies. A project supervisor is allocated to each student in April/May and provides support throughout the project period.

The shifting balance in world trade, the emergence of fast growing economies plus an increasing pool of world consumers means that businesses need to be increasingly focused on how they develop their competitive marketing strategies.

This unit aims to equip you with the knowledge and awareness for the changing dynamics of the global marketplace. You will explore how the global marketplace influences the varying approaches to how organisations are adopting their marketing strategies.

■ International Brand Strategy
This unit introduces you to the role and nature of brand development and management within an international environment. You will be introduced to a range of issues such as: the brand development process; brand architecture and management; global v local brand strategy, international macro-environment, international culture, corporate branding; international brand strategy and the role semiotics and marketing communications play in the brand development process.

■ Strategy & Planning for Digital and Social Media Communications
The digital skills gap is widely recognised as a major barrier to organisations maximising the benefits of successful digital marketing. The unit takes a detailed view of developing a digital and social media communications strategy and plan. Learn from digital marketing specialists – each with active practitioner experience in their fields, such as email marketing, search, social media, mobile. You will also work on live briefs – utilising the skills you develop through the unit content.

■ Research Methods
This unit covers a range of areas. Initially the focus is on developing your study skills, especially the ability to research and critique journal articles. You will be learning about research philosophy, qualitative and quantitative research methods in order to prepare you for your dissertation. Tutorial activities such as being part of a focus group will give you first hand experience of the difficulties involved in undertaking primary research.

■ Investigating Business Practice (live client brief)
This unit involves working with a client on a live brief with other students. This will develop your communication skills, ability to work with others (students and clients), and will require some independent work to meet the requirements of the brief. The brief is normally a marketing communications issue that needs addressing for an organisation.

The digital age has revolutionised the way that audiences and consumers interact with and consume content. Film, TV, music, books and computer games are now bought and sold over a dizzying array of platforms, from traditional cinematic exhibition to premium-priced SVOD pre-releases of movies in your living room, and from boxed computer discs from retailers to free-to-play app games on your mobile phone.

This course will take participants through the process of taking a piece of content (a game, TV show or a feature film) to its market – examining how the sales, marketing, distribution and retail (or exhibition) side of each industry works from “nose to tail”. The course will also look at the emergence of new and innovative forms of media that merge traditional media with digital markets (including Youtubers, branded content among others) and the commercial side of each. By the end of the course students will be expected to have an unrivalled overview of the three key sectors and be able to move between them with ease, making them both very employable executives and marketers who can utilise multi-disciplinary skills to innovate in their chosen sector.

At the heart of the course are two four-week work placements at major media firms, alongside professionally led seminars from some of the world’s most prestigious companies.

Over the course of the two years, students will learn:

- Key branding and marketing concepts within the creative sectors.
- Sector-specific commercial and creative trends, national and international marketplace analysis
- The full distribution value chain of each of the industries – film, television, digital entertainment and computer games
- How sales, distribution and marketing coalesce to help raise finance and complete projects

WORK PLACEMENTS

Students will undertake two four-week work placements - one in the first year and one in the second year of the course at media companies, to gain experience both of the cut and thrust of a product launch (whether it is a film, game or television show) and to make contacts. These work placements will be researched by students, and agreed by tutors in advance. These placements aim to challenge and augment the participant’s skillset, and at least one must be taken within a company outside the participant’s favoured media industry.

MARKET ATTENDANCE

Students will also attend one key market in each sector – the Berlin Film Festival in February; MIPCOM in October and EGX in September. These are opportunities to see the scale of the worldwide market and to meet potential collaborates and business partners.

STUDENT FINAL PROJECTS

Students’ final projects will be a live proposal for, and implementation of, an ambitious sales, marketing and distribution strategy for a film or computer game. Participants are expected to either bring a project for consideration by tutors (for example an indie game or independent feature film), or will be placed within a company to initiate and run a fully worked-through strategy for the delivery of a product to consumers. This will be augmented with a self-reflective report on the successes and failures of the campaign.

The one-year course has been designed in line with the requirements of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing and its content reflects the very latest developments in the field, including location-based marketing, user experience, customer journey mapping and mobile marketing.

It focuses on the knowledge and skills you’ll need to be successful in modern marketing and you’ll build a portfolio of materials to present to future employers including created web content, video content, profile infographics, customer journey maps, campaign proposals and analytics.

The course offers the chance to complete a Masters consultancy project in place of a dissertation, and we’ll discuss that option with you towards the end of your first semester. In the second year of this course you’ll undertake study in another country. Employers often prefer applicants who have a strong international awareness. Teaching And Assessment

You’ll learn through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops combining theory with case studies and examples. Guest lectures from visiting professionals will support your learning and industry practitioners will set live project briefs and offer personal feedback.

Given the ever-changing nature of the digital marketing field, you will be encouraged to innovate and apply emerging technologies to solve business problems.

You’ll be supported extensively with your personal and professional development, particularly around reflection, self-awareness and group skills and be offered the chance to take part in a residential weekend to build on these. You’ll also get the chance to develop leadership and management skills in both theoretical and real-life settings.

During the second year you’ll spend a whole semester studying in another country. We organise exchanges with universities in Europe, Asia and the Americas, allowing you to take your international experience to another level. You’ll deepen your understanding of relevant topics and there may also be studies related to the language and culture of the host region. On your return you’ll complete your dissertation or consultancy project.

The main assessment method will be via individual assignments and business reports where you’ll be expected to take a deep and critical approach and demonstrate your ability to think widely about the issues presented.

You’ll also be required to submit a 15,000 word, subject-specific dissertation where you’ll explore a digital theme in depth, applying research skills and methodologies that will be covered as part of your dissertation preparation.

You will have the option to undertake a Masters’ consultancy project as an alternative to the dissertation, which will be discussed during the course.
