The ICT for Development (ICT4D) specialism is a strand within the established and highly successful MSc Practising Sustainable Development. It is offered jointly by the Politics, Development and Sustainability (PDS) Group and the UNESCO Chair/Centre in ICT4D at Royal Holloway, University of London.

This ICT4D Masters strand takes a global perspective on sustainable development and the role of ICTs; placed at the interface of research and practice, it is designed for those who want to launch or further their careers as development practitioners or scholars. It combines cutting-edge teaching on ICT4D with rigorous training in the broader field of sustainable development, to provide a well-rounded perspective on current and future development challenges. This degree extends knowledge, develops key skills and optimises career prospects.

The course is also offered at Postgraduate Diploma level for those who do not have the academic background necessary to begin an advanced Master’s degree. The structure of the Diploma is identical except that you will not write a dissertation. If you are successful on the Diploma you may transfer to the MSc, subject to academic approval.

The UNESCO Chair/Centre in ICT4D at Royal Holloway is an interdisciplinary centre involving staff in Geography, Management, Computer Science and Earth Sciences. One of the world leaders in its field, with 17 affiliated staff and 18 PhD students, it is a vibrant research community embedded in both the College and the international ICT4D Collective of ICT4D practitioners. The Politics, Development and Sustainability (PDS) group consists of over 20 research-active staff, 35 PhD students and 50 Master’s students on four MSc programmes. Course content and structure

The course is divided into three compulsory elements; theory, policy and practice; research training; and a dissertation. Students studying for the Postgraduate Diploma do not undertake the dissertation.

Core course units:
Sustainability, Development and Governance
This course will equip students with a detailed understanding of the development of sustainable development as a discourse. Students will explore key sustainability issues such as climate change, globalisation, and human responses with an emphasis on the emergence of environmental governance as a means to pursue sustainability.

Technology and Development
This course provides you with an introduction to the role of technology in development, focusing particularly on mobile phone and computer technologies. The course combines an understanding of key theoretical debates and how technologies have been applied in diverse sectors such as health and education. The course also includes training in the use of GIS (geographical information systems) within a development context.

ICT4D
This course gives you the opportunity to develop deeper understandings of cutting-edge applications of ICT4D research and practice. Topics covered include environmental change and Green ICT, open development and subversive forms of technology use, and logics of inclusion and exclusion in ICT programmes. You will also examine project planning, monitoring and evaluation in the field of ICT4D.

Participatory Research
This course combines detailed understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of participatory research and methods with practical experience of using different participatory research techniques. These include participatory diagramming, participatory video and participatory environmental monitoring.

Research Training
You will be provided with training in a range of methods to enable you to plan, carry out and complete a piece of research. There are three modules in this element:
- Social Research Methods Training - provides a range of social science methods for field research and analysis.
- Quantitative Methods for Graduates - provides basic statistical concepts and procedures used in empirical research.
- Development and Environment Research Training - provides guidance for planning, developing and undertaking research in a development and environment context.

Dissertation (MSc only)
The dissertation is of between 12,000 and 15,000 words, on a topic of your choice which has been approved by the supervisor. It requires both secondary and primary research, and the demonstration of originality in integrating theoretical and practical research methods in tackling a particular problem. You will be encouraged to carry out your dissertation in collaboration with an organisation in the field of development and environment.

Community Volunteer Project
You will undertake an independent volunteer project which will give you practical experience in gaining sustainability related work experience in a non-for profit organisation. The project will enhance your employability whilst and provide an opportunity to gain practical experience of third sector organisational objectives, cultures and practices.

Elective course units:
Sustainability, Development and Society
You will develop a detailed understanding of key social / environmental relationships incorporating contemporary issues in the geographies of sustainability. These will include 'risk society', sustainable cities, and the impacts of corporate sector activities on the environment. You will also understand the challenges to sustainable development at household and community levels, with a focus on community-based approaches to sustainable development.

Business Ethics and Enterprise
The aim of the course is to equip students with the moral frameworks and critical abilities necessary to understand the role of business in society from an ethical perspective. The course will cover different types of business including large publicly traded multinationals, small and medium sized enterprises, social enterprises and family firms. Students will be expected to understand the different issues in these organizational types and to articulate moral arguments from a range of different perspectives.

International Sustainability Management
This course provides participants with an understanding of how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) informs sustainability management issues in large, transnational organisations. It will focus on issues such as consumption and sustainability as dichotomised between the apparently incompatible tensions of economic and environmental interests.

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- an understanding at an advanced level of the relationships between, and complexities of, social, economic, political and environmental aspects of sustainable development and ICT4D

This award is aimed at graduates of Computing-related degrees who want to develop the key skills needed to create applications for phones, tablets, and other mobile devices. As well as downloadable applications for the consumer market, you will learn to create mobile clients for larger computer systems. On the extended international route computing students study the same modules for one semester to develop the skills and self-confidence of international students who have not previously studied in a UK Higher Education learning environment

This is a full-time, on campus award but you can also study Mobile Device Application Development part-time by distance learning or without the preliminary semester - Mobile Device Application Development full-time.

Course content

On the computing extended MSc you will spend your first semester studying modules which have been written to provide you with the academic, professional and technical skills that you will need to succeed on your chosen award. All students on the extended MSc study the same modules for one semester and then study specialist modules depending on their degree. This means that whether you have chosen MSc Computer Science, MSc Computer Networks & Security, MSc Web Development or any of our other taught MSc Computing awards, you will study the following modules in your first semester:

Academic English: This module will help you to develop your English Language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and will introduce you to the conventions of academic writing.

Study skills & Employability: This module will help you to develop the skills and knowledge required to support study at Masters level. It will also help you to develop skills which will aid you in the job market and will look at things such as writing a C.V. and creating a personal development plan.

Computing Fundamentals: This is a double module which has been designed to provide an introduction to fundamental concepts which underpin Computing. The module will enable you to revise and refresh your existing skills to prepare you for study on your specialist awards.

After successfully completing the first semester, you will be able to study core modules and choose from option modules as set out in your award handbook.

You need to be an experienced programmer before you start. Core modules on the award will teach you the programming and software engineering skills needed to develop and publish applications on three of the most popular mobile platforms: Android (Java), iOS (Objective-C) and Windows Phone (C#).

You will also study the design aspects of mobile systems, from user interface design to the design of enterprise systems which incorporate mobility.

As well as downloadable applications for the consumer market, you will learn to create mobile clients for larger computer systems.

This is a full-time, on campus award with a placement but you can also study Mobile Device Application Development part-time by distance learning.

Course content

You need to be an experienced programmer before you start. Core modules on the award will teach you the programming and software engineering skills needed to develop and publish applications on three of the most popular mobile platforms: Android (Java), iOS (Objective-C) and Windows Phone (C#).

You will also study the design aspects of mobile systems, from user interface design to the design of enterprise systems which incorporate mobility.

You will undertake 12 month industrial placement where the University will advise you and help you in finding a placement opportunity. There is also a non-sandwich version of this award, which does not include the placment.

Course structure

This module is concerned with the design, implementation and testing of applications for the Android operating system. Students will work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to testing, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification.

EL882 - iPhone Application Design (15 credits)
This module is concerned with the design, implementation and testing of applications for the iPhone. Students will work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to testing, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification.

EL883 - Mobile Web Development (15 credits)

EL884 - Mobile Application Design Project (30 credits)
A mobile application will be developed for a platform agreed between the student and the supervisor either in an industrial context or within the School.

EL885 - Research Methods and Project Design for Mobile Apps (15 credits)

CO871 - Advanced Java for Programmers (15 credits)
This module provides for well-qualified computer science students entering the MSc programme from a range of backgrounds. These students will have good programming skills but will not necessarily have used Java or another object-oriented language extensively. This module seeks to ensure that students have the Java and object-oriented design skills necessary for the rest of their programme.

CO881 - Object-Oriented Programming (15 credits)
This module provides an introduction to object-oriented programming using the popular Java language. It is designed for beginners who have not studied computer programming before. By the end students will be able to develop simple programmes using Java. (Note that students with substantial prior experience of programming take module CO871 Advanced Java for Programmers[1] instead.)

EL890 - MSc Project (60 credits)
A major practical system will be developed either in an industrial context or within the department. There are no formal lectures - students will undertake the work in their own time under the regular supervision of a member of the academic staff and, where appropriate, industrial collaborators.

Assessment

The project module is examined by a presentation and dissertation. The Research Methods and Project Design module is examined by several components of continuous assessment. The other modules are assessed by examinations and smaller components of continuous assessment. MSc students must gain credits from all the modules (180 credits in total). For the PDip, you must gain at least 120 credits in total, and pass certain modules to meet the learning outcomes of the PDip programme.

This innovative new programme in the Department of Development Studies offers students the opportunity to combine study and analysis of critical perspectives on development and the increasingly important and related field of migration studies.

The MSc in Migration, Mobility and Development will focus attention on the political economy of migration from a historical perspective, major trends in migration theories, and different forms of and approaches to the study of migration and displacement. The programme draws on the expertise of staff in development, migration and forced migration contexts from the Development Studies department, and encourages inter-disciplinary dialogue with other relevant departments and centres within SOAS.

The programme’s 20-week core modules will focus on the migration–development nexus, broadly conceived and defined. It will also expose students to a range of interlocking theoretical approaches which set out to account for constructions of and responses to migration and migrants, as well as to the scope and scale of migratory processes. Structure

- Overview
There are four main components to this degree: three taught modules and a 10,000 word dissertation. All students take a core module, Migration, Mobility and Development. A distinctive feature of the core module is that students work together in small groups to produce a migration related research report. They then select one of two further modules: Political Economy of Development or Theory, Policy and Practice of Development. Through these modules students build their analytical skills and knowledge of the main issues and debates in Development Studies.

- Specialisation
Students also take optional modules (one full module or two half modules), allowing them to specialise in particular areas of development and possibly use them to develop a dissertation in a related theme. By tying these to their individual dissertation topic, students design their degree to suit their own interests and career development goals.

Students should be aware that not all optional modules may run in a given year. Modules at other institutions are not part of the approved programme structure.

Materials

SOAS Library is one of the world's most important academic libraries for the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, attracting scholars from all over the world. The Library houses over 1.2 million volumes, together with significant archival holdings, special collections and a growing network of electronic resources.

Teaching & Learning

The MSc programme consists of three taught modules (corresponding to three examination papers) and a dissertation. Courses are taught by a combination of methods, principally lectures, tutorial classes, seminars, collaborative research projects and supervised individual study projects.

- Lectures

Most modules involve a two hour lecture as a key component with linked tutorial classes.

- Seminars

At Masters level there is particular emphasis on seminar work. Students make full-scale presentations for each unit that they take, and are expected to write papers that often require significant independent work.

- Dissertation

A quarter of the work for the degree is given over to the writing of an adequately researched 10,000-word dissertation. Dissertation work requires students to make use of theoretical and empirical material and relate this to a migration related topic.

Employment

A postgraduate degree in Migration, Mobility and Development from SOAS provides graduates with a portfolio of widely transferable skills sought by employers, including analytical skills, the ability to think laterally and employ critical reasoning, and knowing how to present materials and ideas effectively both orally and in writing. Equally graduates are able to continue in the field of research, continuing their studies either at SOAS or other institutions.

The NFTS Games course provides the practical skills and creative knowhow to design, devise and make games from inception to delivery, and the vision and temperament to provide creative leadership in an industry which continually strives to increase its cultural reach, broaden its audiences and create new and engaging experiences for an innovation-hungry marketplace. Games students develop projects in collaboration with students from other NFTS disciplines including sound design, composing, screenwriting, cinematography, producing, production design, digital effects, editing and production management.

CURRICULUM

In the first year students undertake a series of set projects – both group and solo – during which they also learn core games development disciplines of design, art, animation, coding and production. The modules and workshops cover 3D modelling/animation, game programming (C#/Unity), game design, character creation, producing and project management. Students also take classes in Life Drawing and theory lectures in cultural and critical studies to support their practical work. In the second year students focus on their Final Major Project, working in multi-disciplinary teams with students from other disciplines. Numerous fruitful partnerships have been formed with sound designers, composers, screenwriters, producers, production designers, cinematographers, digital effects artists and others, but the exact composition of development teams varies according to the nature of the projects. External practitioners can also be brought in on projects where needed. Early in the second year students also undertake a detailed module on commercial aspects of game development and present professional business cases for their projects to a panel of experts as a practical output.

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT AND PROJECT OUTPUT

Students develop a cumulative portfolio of work throughout the course. First year output will include the following projects at minimum: ‘Hello World’ (an extensive playable 3D environment made a as a group project); ‘App Factory’ (a mobile/tablet game); ‘Synthespian’ (a player controlled interactive character performing to a set text); ‘Moments of Consequence’ (a short interactive drama). Students work in teams with other school specialisms depending on the specifics of the project. Second year output is exhibited at major shows and expos in various stages during the year, as well as at the Games Graduation Expo which takes place alongside the NFTS Graduation Film, Television and Animation screenings in February.

Students also participate in competitions, game jams and external projects throughout the course, and work is shown and shared on NFTS Games department blog (http://www.nfts-games.com) as well as on students’ own individually maintained portfolio websites. The department also actively promotes student output and activity on our well-followed social media presences.

Final Projects are as varied and diverse as our student group. We’ve proudly presented cutting edge virtual reality experiences, a playable political thriller, episodic interactive dramas, comedic ghost stories, a Dostoevsky-inspired interactive story environment, a motion-controlled playable monster, an interactive romantic comedy, to name a handful. CREATIVE COMMUNITY

Since 2012, the NFTS Games course has fed into a creative community of alumni, course contacts, indie developers, games journalists and development studio people who visit the course and follow our work. Students entering the course rapidly become part of this community through networking events, meetup groups, conference attendance and involvement with industry associations such as UKIE, Bafta Games, Creative Skillset and others. Not only does this provide a healthy exchange of ideas and knowledge, but it also provides a network of contacts for future employment, partnership opportunities and funding sources.

A significant proportion of NFTS Games grads have secured funding or distribution for projects developed on the course and have formed their own studio start-ups to make them, while others go on to work at games studios such as Sony Computer Entertainment or Reloaded. Students have also been successful in securing grant funding for projects through our partnership with the Wellcome Trust. Our alumni have also had their fair share of awards and prizes.

INDUSTRY INPUT

As well as an advisory group including members drawn from Sony, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Media Molecule, Bossa Studios, Natural Motion, NDreams and others, we have regular workshops delivered by experienced industry practitioners. Recent visiting tutors include Siobhan Reddy (Media Molecule), Imre Jele (Bossa Studios), Tara Saunders (Sony), Andrew Oliver (Radiant Worlds), Richard Lemarchant (ex Naughy Dog), Phil Harrison (ex Microsoft), Barry Mead (Fireproof games), Mike Bithell, Jess Curry (The Chinese Room). As well as giving overview talks, where time permits guest tutors have one-to-one sessions with students and give specific input of current project work.

The course is a member of the Sony Playstation®First programme which give students access to Sony PS4 devkits and professional software development kits. We are also a Creative Skillset accredited MA course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Games design and development students at the NFTS come from a wide range of backgrounds and prior experiences, and have demonstrated an excitement, aptitude, creativity and willingness to learn new skills. We actively seek a diverse and interesting group of people who have something new to bring into the games development fold. Successful applicants have come to us with previous qualifications from across the arts, sciences and humanities; and from all walks of life as far as profession and practice is concerned. Games development experience is welcome, but by no means essential.

The taught postgraduate Degree Programmes of the Department are intended both to assist with professional career development within the relevant industry and, for a small number of students, to serve as a precursor to academic research.

The delivery of media content relies on many layers of sophisticated signal engineering that can process images, video, speech and audio – and signal processing is at the heart of all multimedia systems.
