Who is it for?

This course is for people who share our ethos of wanting to design technology that meets user needs - interactive systems that are useful, easy-to-use and engaging. It is for people who get frustrated when they interact with unnecessarily complicated Websites, mobile apps or other interactive systems and think 'I want to be able to improve this.' It is for people that want to design technology based on an understanding of users' needs and to ensure that the products they and others design meet those needs. We welcome students who share this user-centred ethos.

Objectives

This course will equip you with the latest academic research, theories and techniques in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience (UX), usability and Interaction Design and encourages you to think about design in new ways - recognising that there are many 'right' ways to design interactive systems.

You will gain a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge, along with the necessary skills and experience to create engaging user experiences. You will study modules that cover the entire user-centred design and evaluation process; from understanding user needs, to designing interactive systems that meet those needs, to evaluating the usability of those (and existing systems) through user research.

Placements

You will have the option to undertake a six month UX internship, after the taught part of the course has finished.

All internships are paid and provide valuable work experience, enhancing employability. As an internship student you can apply the HCI/UX knowledge and skills you have developed on the course in real-world projects and build a UX work portfolio. This supports you in standing out in the job market. You will also get the opportunity to conduct your independent research project on a topic of interest to both you and the internship company. This helps ensure the practical importance of the research.

Academic facilities

You will benefit from the use of the City Interaction Lab - a combined commercial and research lab, where we have undertaken UX consultancy for prestigious companies including Virgin Atlantic. The lab is fitted with the latest technologies including a usability testing suite, mobile testing station, eye-tracker, interactive tabletop, brain interaction technology, 3D printer and more. We employ student consultants on some projects, providing the opportunity to work on real client projects.

Teaching and learning

The course is delivered by distinguished academics from City University London's Centre for HCI Design, who all have a passion for user-centred design. Industry professionals also participate in teaching and learning - by giving guest lectures, running practitioner tutorials and even by providing feedback on students' design outputs and input into module content, ensuring that students learn the knowledge and skills most valued by industry.

Assessment

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities and interactive workshops and tutorials. It is assessed in a variety of ways, including:
-Examinations (which focus on applying HCI theory in realistic situations).
-Coursework (which range from written reports and essays, to posters, presentations and design documentation - e.g. wireframe prototypes). A range of both group and individual courseworks are set during the course. Group courseworks are often centred around realistic design projects.
-Independent research project (dissertation). The independent project allows students to conduct original research on an HCI topic of their choice.
-Each of these account for around one-third of the total course assessment. However, the exact balance varies according to the chosen elective module.

Modules

You will study seven core modules and one elective module that cover the entire user-centred design and evaluation process. Modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities and interactive workshops and tutorials. These include sessions delivered by guest lecturers from industry. Full-time students spend eight hours/week in lectures and four hours/week in seminars/tutorials. Part-time students spend half this time in classes. Overall workload is around 36 hours/week for full-time and 18 hours/week for part-time students.

You will also undertake an independent Research Project, for which our module on Research Methods and Professional Issues will prepare you.

A series of optional, but recommended, practitioner tutorials supplement the taught modules. These include talks, workshops and field trips. Previous tutorials have featured HCI/UX practitioners from prestigious companies including Foolproof, Futureheads and eBay.

About the School of Engineering and Digital Arts

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts successfully combines modern engineering and technology with the exciting new field of digital media.

Established over 40 years ago, the School has developed a top-quality teaching and research base, receiving excellent ratings in both research and teaching assessments.

The School undertakes high-quality research that has had significant national and international impact, and our spread of expertise allows us to respond rapidly to new developments. Our 30 academic staff and over 130 postgraduate students and research staff provide an ideal focus to effectively support a high level of research activity. This module is concerned with the design, implementation and testing of applications for the Android operating system. Students will work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to testing, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification.

EL882 - iPhone Application Design (15 credits)
This module is concerned with the design, implementation and testing of applications for the iPhone. Students will work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to testing, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification.

EL883 - Mobile Web Development (15 credits)

EL884 - Mobile Application Design Project (30 credits)
A mobile application will be developed for a platform agreed between the student and the supervisor either in an industrial context or within the School.

EL885 - Research Methods and Project Design for Mobile Apps (15 credits)

CO871 - Advanced Java for Programmers (15 credits)
This module provides for well-qualified computer science students entering the MSc programme from a range of backgrounds. These students will have good programming skills but will not necessarily have used Java or another object-oriented language extensively. This module seeks to ensure that students have the Java and object-oriented design skills necessary for the rest of their programme.

CO881 - Object-Oriented Programming (15 credits)
This module provides an introduction to object-oriented programming using the popular Java language. It is designed for beginners who have not studied computer programming before. By the end students will be able to develop simple programmes using Java. (Note that students with substantial prior experience of programming take module CO871 Advanced Java for Programmers[1] instead.)

EL890 - MSc Project (60 credits)
A major practical system will be developed either in an industrial context or within the department. There are no formal lectures - students will undertake the work in their own time under the regular supervision of a member of the academic staff and, where appropriate, industrial collaborators.

Assessment

The project module is examined by a presentation and dissertation. The Research Methods and Project Design module is examined by several components of continuous assessment. The other modules are assessed by examinations and smaller components of continuous assessment. MSc students must gain credits from all the modules (180 credits in total). For the PDip, you must gain at least 120 credits in total, and pass certain modules to meet the learning outcomes of the PDip programme.

This is an MA programme for creative people and account planners working on a combination of course- and client-set “live” briefs, leading and mentoring teams of undergraduate advertising students in ways that mirror the professional creative team-leadership role. With its emphasis on building real business skills, on team leadership and creativity, this course is unlike any other MA Advertising programme in existence in the UK and abroad.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course is organised to help writers, art directors and planners improve their specialist skills while at the same time learning to work better as teams. Some of the modules are discipline-specific and others require students to work in teams as they do in agencies.

Trimester 1 (60 credits)

Core skills (30 credits)
This module is designed to give students necessary postgraduate-level skills in research methodologies, to provide an overview of ethical issues in advertising and – through a series of intensive workshop sessions – to improve students’ presentation skills. Copywriters, art directors and account planners work together on set briefs and present their thinking in these workshops.

Creativity in Practice (30 credits)
This portfolio-building class encourages experimentation with technology and new media, using global case studies as examples of best practice. Through a combination of set and “live” briefs, students learn to play to their strengths and identify areas of improvement to work on during their specialist “Advanced Topic” modules.

Trimester 2 (60 credits)

Marketing Communications (15 credits)
This module explores the key issues and challenges in contemporary marketing communications. It covers strategic issues of brand strategy, planning, and channel integration as well as the tactical considerations needed to execute relevant and appropriate marketing communications campaigns that meet the needs of key identified audiences.

Creativity and Change (15 credits)
This module enables students to develop their capacity in creativity and innovation, and in the manner that they communicate and negotiate with colleagues and key stakeholders. It helps students to become more self-aware, both as a learner and as a manager, in the way they apply these skills to the organisation.

Advanced topics in Copywriting (30 credits; required for copywriters)
Here copywriting students consider the relationship between language and advertising ‘idea’, the role of word choice, grammar and punctuation, writing better headlines and better body copy through writing workshops and talking with guest speakers.

Advanced topics in Art Direction (30 credits; required for art directors)
Students in this module improve their art-directing skills by visiting and talking with successful art directors, photographers, illustrators and filmmakers, learning about and practicing with the latest hardware and software, and in workshops discussing their own work in relation to the work of other students.

What is the relationship between consumer insights and advertising ideas? How can account planners work best with creative teams and account managers to turn these insights into great work? Learning from established account planners and sharing their own thoughts and ideas with their peers, students in this module learn how and why account planning has become central to the creative process in most agencies today.

This module provides both theoretical and prescriptive knowledge needed to deal with various managerial problems that exist in the effective and efficient utilisation of the information systems (IS) and information technologies (IT). The module places an emphasis on the small business management in the aspects of entrepreneurship, strategic plans, e-business and supply chain management.

- Research methods
The modules aims to enhance your knowledge and skills in research methodology, research ethics, planning, research design and analysis, presentation in order to undertake a large research project.

- E-business applications
On this module you be taught web site design/architecture, web site development and web-database connectivity.

- Software project management
This module develops the knowledge and skills that are required to manage IT projects. It covers the various stages in project planning, scheduling, implementation and evaluation. Lectures, including presentations from guest external practitioners, are used to deliver relevant subject-specific content. Practical work includes case studies from real scenarios and the development of significant computer applications.

Development of transferable skills, self-managed learning and professional development are core themes throughout the programme. Methods include group-based activities and discussions, self-directed learning and research, and tutor-led workshops.

Our approach to assessment is subject specific and designed to complement your learning in any given module. You are assessed by individual coursework including case studies, reports and developing computer applications. You may also be assessed by group work which starts with the group and proceeds your individual assessment.

Other assessment methods include producing a portfolio of technical work and presenting your research findings. We use this to assess your technical skills, transferable skills and professional skills.

This Masters programme provides state-of-the-art training in the latest advances in Digital Health Systems development and management. It's aimed at those who aim to become leaders in the field of Health IT, either for Health systems service delivery or for the Health & Wellness IT industry.

Graduates will gain essential skills and expertise in designing applications that are accessible and usable, and that comply with complex data governance within healthcare. You'll gain experience in managing, analysing and making use of data collected from personal devices (such as apps and wearables) and large scale health systems (such as electronic records). You'll also gain key software development and management skills that are critical for deploying health systems.

This course looking at the whole systems implementation of digital health systems is one of its kind in the UK.

This new and unique course is the first of its kind to offer technical graduates the opportunity to develop the core skills required to develop advanced health and wellness systems and technologies for improving the way we personally manage our lifestyles and how our care systems deliver better health to citizens.

You'll study

The course includes 120 credits of taught material - taken over the first two semesters - and a 60-credit digital health project that runs, typically, from May to September.

In addition to learning about the design, development and evaluation process for personal health and wellness devices and systems and larger scale hospital and community based IT systems, students will also be trained to understand and use techniques for using the data that these systems produce to support decision making and planning and delivery of better care.

Work placement

Student projects will be conducted in close collaboration with the Digital Health Research group partners.

Furthermore, the Digital Health Research group has close links with Scotland’s innovation centres (Digital Health & Care Institute, Data Lab), the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences, The City Observatory, and the Centre for Health Policy. These links provide a range of opportunities for practical partnerships with the leading organisations and industries in the field.

Major projects

Working closely with the Digital Health research group means students will be alongside a group that has conducted major collaborative research and development projects and evaluations within the UK and internationally. The group were lead investigators in the evaluation of a £37 million Innovate UK programme to deploy assistive digital health and wellness technologies at scale across the UK.

The group is also involved in organising key national and international conferences such as the British Computer Society (BCS) Health Informatics conference and the ACM conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.

Example projects include: Design of mobile apps for Managing Diabetes; Cost Benefit Analysis of Technology Enabled Care; Evaluating the Barriers to Implementing Electronic Personal Health Records at Scale.

Student competitions

Each year one student will be awarded the 'Innovative Digital Health and Care' award for the best overall student project (judged by representatives from academia, health and social care and industry).

Guest lectures

The taught modules will include guest-lectures from experts and practitioners in the field of Health IT, both from industry, this sector and the National Health Service.

Learning & teaching

Teaching combines face-to-face lectures, labs and tutorials as well as personal/group study time.

Assessment

Taught modules are assessed using a combination of individual projects, group projects and final exams. The project is assessed on the quality of the project report (ie Master thesis). An overall minimum of 50% across all assessed classes and report is required in order to be awarded the Master in Digital Health Systems.
