There has been a huge year on year growth in the IT sector and in particular in the area of the web and mobile devices. This has led to a corresponding rise in demand for skilled IT professionals in this area. This area because of its small initial investment costs also enables appropriately skilled professionals to start and grow their own companies

This technology based course is ideal for students who have a degree in Computer Science or a related field. The focus is on the process from design of software through to deployment and a full understanding of the technologies that enable this. As a student you will experience a combination of structured learning with problem-based scenarios and research that will develop your capabilities for critical thinking, argument, creativity and encourage your innovation all of which are brought into the practical decision making processes encountered in this fast moving area.

Emphasis in this course is on obtaining real world professional practice skills, with a large amount of the course being undertaken in workshops utilising real world tools. Theoretical knowledge will be underpinned through case studies, lectures and seminars. Learning will be encouraged through the use of practical assignments and the underlying aim is to turn you into a professional who not only understands the theory of this technical area, but has real life and up to date practical skills and experience.

What happens on the course?

The course has a main thrust in the areas of Web design and technologies, Mobile technologies and App development. Alongside these subjects you will study topics that develop the high level academic skills required at postgraduate level, and there is an opportunity to work with an industrial partner on a mini project.

At the end of this course you, the student, will be able to:

Conduct research into advanced areas of Mobile and Web technologies; apply and extend an understanding of the nature of research and development; demonstrate the professional skills required to produce a high-quality deliverable and communicate results clearly through appropriate media.

Demonstrate expertise in development of mobile apps; apply well-chosen techniques and methodologies to generate sophisticated solutions through team work;

Apply appropriate tools and advanced techniques to develop sophisticated web sites and Internet applications;

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the concepts and technologies underpinning modern web and mobile platforms, and have the ability to supply flexible solutions to the changing technological landscape.

Career path

In 2014 the EU released a report entitled "Sizing the EU App Economy" stating that currently the app market employs 1 million developers and grosses 17.5 Billion Euros and will rise in 2018 to 2.7 million and 63 Billion respectively. The EU developers raise 43% of the global revenue for consumer apps, and a challenge to this is the serious skills shortage. Indeed.com identified that the top UK IT job shortage was HTML5 programmers, and Mobile app developers come in at number 5.

What skills will you gain?

Conduct research into advanced areas of Mobile and Web technologies; apply and extend an understanding of the nature of research and development; demonstrate the professional skills required to produce a high-quality deliverable and communicate results clearly through appropriate media.

UWS computing researchers Jose Alcaraz-Calero and Qi Wang are the technical leads on the SELFNET project, which is developing a ‘self-healing’ mobile network. The new network is 1,000 times faster than 4G, delivering dramatic improvements to quality of user experience, reliability and security – and unlocking a wealth of new online opportunities.

”SELFNET will allow 5G networks to make possible things that would have been considered science fiction just a few years ago.” Dr. Alcaraz-Calero

As part of this course, you will hear from PhD students who are working on the 5G mobile project, and the course content will be updated to reflect the findings of this work.

MSc Software Engineering has been designed to provide the skills, knowledge and rigour associated with the internationally recognised discipline of software engineering as defined by amongst others, the IEEE as: the systematic design and development of software products and the management of the software process.

The course is designed to concentrate on the core software engineering skills of a methodical, rigorous quality driven, managed approach to software development: whether it is through a practical understanding of Agile Software Development, to a certifiable standard; or working with the industry leading SAP software to engineer large scale system design or integration. Throughout the award the emphasis is on real-world skills blended with research driven teaching.

In addition to the core activities you will have the option to specialise further by selecting from a range of optional modules tailored to give you exposure to web, mobile or database systems development, enhancing the vocational value of this award.

Equally of significance is the programme’s emphasis on scholastic development. You will be guided through best research practices to develop your ability to investigate, analyse and communicate research at a master’s level; as well as encouraging you to consider future trends and technologies that will shape the world of tomorrow.

An optional placement provides an opportunity to embellish your portfolio and prove your newly acquired skills in the workplace as part of your master’s study.

The award culminates in the dissertation, which is your opportunity to develop your specialism to become a subject-matter-expert through research and application of advanced theories and principles, ideally placing you to take advantage of vocational opportunities or progress to further postgraduate study.

You can study this course in a number of study modes:
-Full-time on-campus
-Full-time on-campus with a placement
-Full-time on-campus following an preliminary semester (Extended International Masters Programme) with or without a placement.
-Part-time distance-learning

The Extended International Programme offers extra modules on employability, computing and study skills including writing in English. This mode is designed to accommodate the needs of international students who require additional support in these areas.
