This programme offers you a route into teaching a subject that is dynamic and constantly changing. Our experts will teach you, through a diverse and integrated course, everything you need to know about the place of Media Studies within the school curriculum.
You’ll learn through a number of Subject Studies and School Experience modules in the areas of Media Studies (75%) and English teaching at Key Stage 3 (25%). You’ll learn hand-on media skills through a programme of practical media training sessions.
Elements of teaching and assessments will be shared with the highly regarded English and Media Centre.

Curriculum workshops are a key element of your course. These are delivered in our specialist facilities by dedicated, full-time Art and Design lecturers and teachers, allowing you to experience a range of practical work in key specialisms such as digital media, 3D construction, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, mixed media, and in working with education departments in leading regional galleries which have included IKON, New Art Gallery Walsall, BMAG and Eastside Projects.
Assignments and school-centred activities are structured around the development of your School Experience Progress Journal (SEPJ). The SEPJ demonstrates your progress against the nationally agreed competences (the Teachers’ Standards), which all teachers must meet throughout their career. A system of continuous review and assessment of progress in the SEPJ will support your growing ability to take responsibility for your own development.
You must have a good degree (minimum 2:2 but 2:1 or 1st preferred) from a UK higher education institution or equivalent in Art and Design or an art-related subject. You must also have a GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in both English language and mathematics prior to application.
There is an expectation that you will have had some general experience of working with secondary age students in a school setting. In preparation for the selection interview you are required to engage in a teaching episode, observed by an experienced qualified teacher. It will support your application to undertake this teaching episode prior to application and in advance of your interview.
At interview you will also need to present a portfolio of personal work which should include a selection of work completed before, during and after your degree.
The selection interview will assess your subject knowledge and personal qualities such as the potential to relate well to secondary age students, enthusiasm, sensitivity, communication skills and robustness and resilience for teaching. You will also take a written test to assess your standard of English.
In addition applicants must meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for Initial Teacher Training, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

The MMus in Creative Musicianship at Ulster University is a series of linked postgraduate awards offered both full-time (1 year) and part-time (2 years). With a particular emphasis on a practice-based study the programme has been designed to appeal to musicians from a variety of backgrounds and genres, interesting in pursuing one of three named pathways:

The MMus in Creative Musicianship is a flexible postgraduate programme which aims to produce informed, skilled and insightful musical practitioners across a wide range of musical genres working in three practice-based fields: Performance, Composition & Creative Audio or Music and Communities. Whether opting to spend a short, focused period of study honing your musicianship skills as part of a PGCert or expanding your studies into a PGDip or Masters, this is the ideal programme for those who wish to develop, refine or refresh their professional expertise for work in the creative industries while also providing the perfect springboard for further postgraduate and/or PhD study.
Over the first two semesters, two complementary Specialism modules (20 credits each) familiarise students with the most important recent developments in their specialist pathway, training them in essential technical, research and communication skills while providing them with opportunities to put their expertise to practical use. The Practice module is devoted entirely to developing the individual's creative practice in their chosen field affording opportunities for one on one tuition. Meanwhile, the Seminar module provides a platform for contextual, aesthetic and theoretical study in their chosen discipline via group tutorial work and practice-based workshops.
In addition, the 20 credit Research Project allows students to pursue a self-directed topic of their choice, usually related to their chosen specialist, under the supervision of a single member of staff and/or undertake work outside of the University as part of an established work placement.
For those continuing their study to MMus level, the third semester Final Project (60 credits) allows the student to undertake a sustained period of self-directed, practice-based work related to their chosen specialism.
