The MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) - web-based is for professionals who wish to develop their critical understanding of recent developments in TESOL theory and practice, reflect on their own teaching and conduct independant research into teaching and learning.

The course is aimed at English language teachers, or those working in a related profession, and is suitable if you are:

• keen to build on your existing knowledge and experience
• interested in improving your career prospects
• planning to take up a more senior position in your institution
• interested in researching your own teaching or applying for a research degree (MPhil/PhD/EdD) after completing a Masters
degree

Course Content and Structure

The MA TESOL (web-based) is designed to be completed in just under three years. It is part-time only. There are Postgraduate Dioloma and Postgraduate Certificate exit points.

It is taught entirely online and has three start dates each year, January, May and September.

The course comprises taught modules totalling 120 credits, plus a 60-credit dissertation.

There are currently three 20-credit core modules, the particular module you start with depends on which of the three entry dates you choose:

• Applied Linguistics for TESOL (January)
• The Language Learner and Language Learning (May)
• Developments in TESOL Methodology (September)

After completing the core modules, you then choose four 15-credit modules from a range of 8 elective modules offered, providing you with considerable freedom in selecting course components to suit your individual needs and interests:

• Leaner Autonomy
• Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL)
• Materials Evaulation and Design
• Assessment in English for Academic Purposes
• Issues in Teaching English for Academic Purposes
• The Management of TESOL
• Learning to Train
• English for Specific Purposes

Each 20-credit module is assessed by a written assignment of 4,000 words or equivalent and 15-credit modules by a written assignment of 3,000 words or equivalent. The dissertation is an original piece of research and should be of approximately 12,000 - 15,000 words on an approved topic.

It is possible to replace two elective modules with one 30-credit online module from our MA Education (Flexible) programme, or one 30-credit MA Education module taken intensively face-to-face at Summer School in the UK (subject to availability).
Our online materials provide an interactive learning experience, and allow you to engage with other students and your tutors in a well-organised and supportive environment.

Entry Requirements

You would normally be expected to hold an honours degree at 2:2 or above, or its international equivalent.

You will normally have a minimum of 9 months’ full-time classroom English language teaching experience (650 hours part-time equivalent). Please note that teaching experience calculation should not include any teaching practicum taken as part of a course.

Applicants who have online teaching experience will also need to show how their hours have been calculated, and provide written evidence from employers.

Consideration will also be given if you can demonstrate that your first degree included English language teaching methodology components, or that you have attended a substantial, approved TESOL methodology course and have a minimum of two months’ full-time classroom English teaching experience (145 hours of part-time experience).

If you have relevant teaching experience, but no first degree, you can apply for non-standard entry.

If English is not your first language, you must achieve an overall score on the IELTS test of at least 7.0, with no less than 6.5 in each element, or a TOEFL IBT score of 100 (minimum 20 in Speaking and 19 in all other eleements).

The course provides a thorough grounding in the techniques of broadcast news, writing for newspapers and magazines, and website production. Trainees work in dedicated newsrooms and studios with all trainees taking roles of responsibility as editors, producers or presenters.

Trainees who follow the broadcast pathway produce Leeds Today, a regional TV news programme that showcases television skills. They also spend a month on air with Bradford Community Broadcasting during which bulletins are produced in real time against deadlines. Trainees following the Print and Magazine pathways produce the North Leeds Newspaper and MORE magazine. Trainees on all pathways are also expected to produce online video, audio and written material for the course’s main news website.

The Broadcast pathways are accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) while the Print and Magazine pathways have National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCJT) accreditation.

Structure

The following five modules make up the diploma:

- News Skills – an intensive, practical module providing the multi-media skills needed in any newsroom, regardless of platform and including shorthand.
- Law, Ethics and Regulation – the knowledge required to be legally safe and ethical journalists, and to follow regulatory codes.
- Live Production – Producing real packages in real time for Yorkshire Voice and the BCB radio.
- Public Affairs – where public affairs embraces British Central and Local Government.
- Professional Work Placement – all trainees must complete at least four weeks of placement in a professional newsroom environment.

Graduates of the course are expected to have a broad overview of the field of GIS, to have extensive practical experience of GIS and related software and hardware, and be able to operate at a professional level in GIS employment.

PgDip modules cover issues such as the representation, acquisition, management and manipulation of spatial data, spatial analysis and modelling, remote sensing, GIS in the commercial environment, databases and web programming. Concepts and techniques are illustrated using a variety of applications. Students can take one optional module from a choice of GIS work experience / work-based project, GIS for environmental management, and customising GIS. Students may also opt for an environmental strand of the course.

In addition to acquiring substantial theoretical knowledge of the subject, students gain extensive practical experience using a variety of software, focusing primarily on ArcGIS but also including ERDAS Imagine, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, MySQL, OpenLayers, Geoserver, QGIS, Excel, SPSS and a number of GIS extensions and plug-ins. One of the core modules gives students experience of web-based programming languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, while an optional module in customising GIS applications introduces them to Esri ModelBuilder and the Python programming language.

Entry requirements

There is an expectation that you will have had some general experience of working with secondary age students in a school setting. In preparation for the selection interview you are required to engage in a teaching episode, observed by an experienced qualified teacher.

As part of the selection procedure, the interview panel will expect you to demonstrate your knowledge of mathematics and will assess personal qualities such as the potential to relate well to secondary age students, enthusiasm, sensitivity, communication skills and robustness and resilience for teaching.

Applicants must also meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for initial teacher training, which means being medically fit and completing successfully an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a range of directed tasks and targeted assignments. Trainee teachers are also required to complete a profile of evidence towards the achievement of the standards required by the National College for Teaching and Leadership for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Evidence for the Standards is verified by mentors.

Facilities, equipment and academic support

Modules related to the different groups are taught by a total of six full-time members of staff and a number of visiting lecturers.

As part of their learning experience, students have at their disposal a wide range of relevant software needed to support the programme material dissertation projects. In recent years, this work included the design of various knowledge-based and business systems on the internet, the application of optimisation algorithms, and semantic web applications.

Numerous laboratory facilities across the Faculty and the University are also available for those opting for technology-based projects, such as the process engineering facility, a control and robotics facility and signal processing labs.

The work related to the MSc dissertation can often be carried out in parallel with, and in support of, ongoing research. In the past, several graduates have carried on their MSc research to a PhD programme.

Our programme will give you a thorough grounding in the radiation and environmental protection aspects of nuclear physics.

This includes in-depth knowledge of radiation protection and showing you how the technical and organisational procedures of the discipline may be applied to the broader concept of environmental protection.

The substantial practical element of this programme enables you to relate taught material to real-world applications. Formal lectures are complemented with work in specialist radiation laboratories that were recently refurbished as part of a £1m upgrade to our facilities.

Here you will work with a wide range of radioactive sources and radiation detectors. There is also an extended project in the spring and an eleven-week MSc dissertation project in the summer.

Research-led teaching

The programme material is taught by a combination of academics from the Department of Physics at Surrey and specialists provided by industrial partners. The Surrey academics are part of the Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Physics which houses the largest academic nuclear physics research group in the UK.

In addition to the formal lectures for taught modules, the programme provides a wide range of experimental hands-on training. This includes a nine-week radiation physics laboratory which takes place in the specialist radiation laboratories within the Department of Physics at the University of Surrey.

These were recently refurbished as part of a £1 million upgrade to the departmental teaching infrastructure. Within the Department, we also have a common room and a departmental library, which contains copies of earlier MSc dissertations.

As well as the laboratory training, you will also undertake a research project at the beginning of the Spring semester as a precursor to the eleven-week research dissertation project which makes up the final part of the MSc.

There are many opportunities for both the spring research project and summer dissertation project to be taken in an external industrial environment.

Careers

The programme has produced over 500 UK and overseas graduates, many of whom have gone on to well-paid positions in companies in the nuclear and radiation sectors. In the UK we need to decommission old reactors and build new ones to provide a low-carbon source of energy.

This, together with, for example, the importance of radioisotopes in fields such as medicine, means that the career prospects of our graduates are excellent.

The programme integrates the acquisition of core scientific knowledge with the development of key practical skills with a focus on professional career development within medical physics and radiation detection, and related industries.

The principle educational aims and outcomes of learning are to provide participants with advanced knowledge, practical skills and understanding applied to medical physics, radiation detection instrumentation, radiation and environmental practice in an industrial or medical context.
