The MCh enables experienced, qualified doctors to develop an evidence- based approach to health care practice and to obtain a postgraduate qualification whilst enhancing their surgical clinical expertise within the NHS.

The programme has been designed in collaboration with senior surgeons and academics and is at the cutting edge of both contemporary surgical practice and research. It will allow you to extend your knowledge and skills to advanced levels within your specialist area of work. The clinical modules focus on practical skills in operative surgery with the use of interactive teaching aids and practical workshops.

You can choose from eighteen established specialist pathways or pursue a generic MCh Surgery pathway which offers the potential to develop expertise in an alternative relevant sub-speciality.

Whichever pathway you choose, the programme will be delivered in partnership with Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. Wrightington Hospital is recognised as a Centre of Excellence (Orthopaedic Surgery) and has clinical facilities / laboratories that will provide you with excellent learning opportunities.

What will I study?

This programme consists of three distinct 20 credit clinical modules, two 30 credit clinical research modules and a 60 credit dissertation. Topics covered will include: Specialist aspects of evidence based practice in surgery; Qualitative and quantitative research methods; Critiquing research findings; Writing a research proposal; Analysis of quantitative data; Systematic reviews; Research governance and ethics; Focus on a significant piece of investigative enquiry from conceptualisation through to completion.

How will I study?

The programme is delivered over two to three years, commencing in September each year. The academic year runs from September through to July, though the dissertation submission will be in September of the second year, with the option to defer the dissertation to the third year. You will experience a variety of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, seminars, individual and group tutorials and independent guided study.

An online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is used for some components of the programme. The surgical modules have elements of practice-based learning and involve the completion of a log of practical experience which complements the course material. The dissertation allows you to focus on a significant piece of investigative enquiry from conceptualisation through to completion.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods include a research proposal, written assignments, completion of online activities and discussions, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), clinical log books, seminar presentations and a dissertation.

The programme team consists of experienced academic staff from across Edge Hill University and expert clinicians from Wrightington Hospital. This collaborative approach provides a team of high calibre individuals to support your learning. Additionally, leading surgeons from related specialities are invited as guest speakers on the surgical modules. Edge Hill University enjoys an excellent reputation for the teaching quality of its programmes. All staff involved in the delivery of modules and pathways within this programme are currently involved in scholarly and research related activities which are congruent with their teaching responsibilities.

Course details

During the programme you study the underpinning principles of evidence-based surgical gastroenterology and minimally invasive surgery. you will focus on developing your clinical knowledge and understanding of surgical gastroenterology practice and the research skills necessary to be an evidence-based practitioner able to undertake clinical research. The programme enables you to:
-Further develop an understanding of the principles and clinical concepts underpinning practice in surgical gastroenterology and minimally invasive surgery
-Further develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to perform evidence-based practice and research within the specialist field of surgical gastroenterology and minimally invasive surgery

We have used a flexible approach to course delivery. For the majority of modules you can choose to attend taught sessions or study by distance learning.

What you study

In Year 1 you study a number of modules which develop your understanding of the principles underpinning clinical practice in surgical gastroenterology and minimally invasive surgery - these develop your skills in evidence-based practice, research methods and statistics.

In Year 2 you undertake a dissertation which includes developing a research paper for publication as well as the research project, OR a dissertation plus an option module.

Teaching

We use a range of learning and teaching methods. For most modules you can choose to attend classes or study by distance learning. Our taught classes use key lectures, group discussions, case-based discussions, practical activities, clinical simulation work and computer lab sessions. All distance learning is supported through the virtual learning environment where learning materials are available in a variety of forms including written materials, narrated PowerPoint presentations, interactive materials and electronic discussion forums. You receive supervision and support from your personal tutor, programme leader, module leaders, academic supervisors and clinical advisers. You are also expected to undertake some self-study to support your learning.

We use a range of assessment methods throughout including formative assessment, written reports, statistical analysis, written and oral exams and a research project.

Description

This is a three-year programme leading to an MSc in Endodontics. You will study the scientific basis of endodontology, diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with complex endodontic problems, and clinical treatment of patients with endodontic and other restorative problems. You will also study and develop research methodology skills to enable you to undertake a research project and further your expertise. We will train you with the latest evidence-based knowledge in endodontology and enable you to successfully integrate endodontic therapy with the other aspects of restorative dentistry.

Our programme director, Dr Federico Foschi, has helped many dental graduates, both nationally and internationally, to achieve their postgraduate goals, broaden their horizons and confidently manage more complex and demanding endodontic cases.

Intensive face-to-face training blocks

Delivered primarily online, the course also provides 14 days of intensive teaching and practical training in London. Our expert tutors will give you guidance on complex dental procedures at our specialist postgraduate teaching centre, LonDEC, situated at our Waterloo Campus, which offers state-of-the-art dental training facilities. These blocks are an invaluable way to consolidate learning and progress to the final year.

Teaching

You will be taught mostly online through King's E-learning and Teaching Service (KEATS) which provides information, interactive questions, assignments, use of bibliographic databases and reading material. This gives you the freedom to study without interrupting your work and personal life, and to put your skills directly into practice. Our students participate in online tutorials and discussion groups, interacting with expert tutors and their fellow students. Face-to-face lectures and hands-on training take place in blocks in the first two years. Students are required to undertake and build a reflective log of clinical work in their own general practice. 

Course format and assessment

60% per cent of each module will be assessed through exams and 40% through assignments, with the exception of the Operative Procedures module and the Endodontic retreatment/Surgery & restoration of endodontically treated teeth module, which will be assessed through clinical portfolios, and your final project, which will be a 10,000-word written report.

You can take your exams in London or, for overseas students, at centres in your country of residence.
