Health Psychology plays a key role in improving the health and wellbeing of the population. This course, based in the heart of London, was one of the first Masters in Health Psychology and has been accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) since 1999. It includes an innovative portfolio of assessments geared to developing transferable skills, and relating directly to the world of work. The course also provides the opportunity to gain work experience and apply your knowledge in a health psychology setting, whilst considering future career plans. The course is taught by a core team of enthusiastic and supportive research-active staff, with collaborative links to external institutions in London and beyond. Successful completion of the course (Stage 1) is a prerequisite for the further training (Stage 2) to become a health psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC).

In addition to the core taught programme, we work with a range of practitioners to provide additional professional training in areas such as resilience, coaching and clinical practice.

The course will give you an in-depth understanding of the theoretical and applied bases of health, illness and disease. The main aim is to help you to develop the theoretical and methodological skills essential for conducting independent research and applying health psychology in practice.

We provide a coherent programme of study covering the content, methods and application of health psychology. In particular, the course emphasises the importance of an evidence-based approach to health psychology, and develops the core skills needed for Stage 2 training. Career path

The course is a prerequisite for those wishing to pursue Stage 2 training leading to Registration with the HCPC as a Health Psychologist. This route is only available to those who have Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) with the BPS. However, it also serves as a precursor to those wishing to pursue a PhD in Psychology, and other areas of applied psychology such as clinical or counselling psychology. The majority of our graduates work in academic or health-related professions, for example: psychology researcher or lecturer, smoking cessation advisor, chronic pain therapist, health consultant.

Graduates from the Health Psychology MSc course at the University of Westminster work at all levels and, in all areas of health and related professions. Most students go on to undertake further postgraduate training be it in research, teaching or work related training. The Global Mental Health programmes offered by the University of Glasgow are unique to Scotland and are the only online Global Mental Health Postgraduate courses offered anywhere in the world. The UCL Division of Psychiatry is pleased to offer this programme focused on clinical practice in mental health and its evidence base. The Clinical Mental Health Sciences MSc integrates biological, psychological and social perspectives on mental health and caters both for psychology graduates and for clinicians wishing to undertake a broad-based, rigorous and flexible higher degree.

About this degree

Students will develop an in-depth understanding of current evidence regarding mental health problems and the interventions provided to address them, as well as enhancing their research skills. A wide range of options from across the School of Life and Medical Sciences at UCL allows students to tailor a programme that fully fits their needs.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of 1–2 core double modules (30–60 credits), 4–6 optional modules (60–90 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits).

A diploma may be awarded to students who complete the equivalent of 8 taught single modules, amounting to 120 credits.

A certificate may be awarded to students who complete the equivalent of 4 taught single modules, amounting to 60 credits.

  • Core Principles of Mental Health Research (double module)
  • Clinical Mental Health (double module – compulsory only for those who do not have at least six months’ full-time experience, or the equivalent, of working in mental health settings).

Students who are unsure whether they should take Clinical Mental Health should discuss it with the course team. It is in general unsuitable for those who are already qualified clinicians. 

Optional modules

Students who take the Clinical Mental Health module will take four optional modules, including at least one from the Division of Psychiatry. Students who do not take this module will take six optional modules, including at least three from the Division of Psychiatry.

Research project/report

All students undertake a final project. This may be a research project, to be reported as a paper of up to 7,000 words ready for submission to a specified journal, a blog of 1,000 words and a 20-minute talk, or a clinical project of 10,000 words reporting on a clinical topic or service evaluation.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars and workshops, with considerable use of supporting online learning. Assessment methods include one unseen examination, coursework including designing questionnaires and protocols and analysing data, giving talks and presenting posters, and a final report in the format of a journal paper or brief for clinicians or service planners.

Placement

The programme team support students in obtaining volunteer placements in relevant mental health care and research settings, but this is not a formal part of the course and is entirely optional.

For non-clinicians, the programme will be an excellent grounding for clinical training, such as in clinical psychology, or for embarking on a research career in mental health. Many graduates go on to research assistant, clinical support worker or assistant psychologist posts as a first destination. The programme is also intended to prepare students for PhD studies, also a major onward route. For clinicians, this is a great opportunity to gain a higher qualification through a programme based in a leading university department which can be closely tailored to your interests across clinical, research and management fields.

Employability

Students will be taught by leading experts in their fields, will gain a strong clinical understanding of mental health, and will be able to develop their skills in research, service design and evaluation, and writing and presenting. The Psychology & Neuroscience of Mental Health MSc/PG Dip/PG Cert provides a comprehensive and integrated exploration of our current understanding of the psychological and neuroscientific basis of mental health. It draws upon the wealth of research, education, clinical expertise and experience across the worldrenowned Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN). The online master’s course promotes an understanding of the evidence base for comprehending the biological, psychological and socio-environmental factors important in the development and maintenance of mental health, and evidence underlining= the development and efficacy of the range of treatments of mental health problems. IoPPN teaching staff are senior scientists, clinicians, and educators. Scientists will showcase cutting edge research into the causes and treatment of mental health problems; clinicians will be presenting current best practice in treatment approaches, and students will be supported by a team of educators with vast experience of designing and delivering scientific, clinical and applied education and training.

The MSc pathway requires modules totalling 180 credits to complete the programme, 60 of which will come from a dissertation of around 10,000 words. The Research Dissertation comprises four advanced modules that will provide you with the opportunity to immerse yourself in understanding the design, development and dissemination of research evidence. These modules also draw upon the knowledge and skills you have learnt during the course.

The Postgraduate Diploma pathway requires modules with a minimum total of 120 credits to complete the course, and the Postgraduate Certificate route requires modules with a total of 60 credits to complete.

The Public Health MSc, PG Dip, PG Cert provides a comprehensive and integrated education in public health through a multidisciplinary study approach which is both academic and vocational. Why study Psychology of Mental Health at Dundee?

The MSc in the Psychology of Mental Health draws upon the recognised expertise of numerous research-active and clinical staff, and will address a broad range of material, including the scientific study of mental health problems, addiction and eating disorders. In addition to being of interest to those wishing to pursue a career in Clinical Psychology the course will also provide suitable training for those who wish to study for a PhD and would be suitable for professionals working with children or adults with a range of psychological disorders. In addition, this course will provide overseas students with a basic training for job opportunities in their home countries.

We have a close postgraduate community with a diverse combination of nationalities. The School runs a Postgraduate seminar and a departmental seminar twice weekly throughout teaching semesters, with invited speakers to the seminars. How you will be assessed

The course is assessed by coursework only.

Each module is worth 20 credits apart from the Research Dissertation Module which is worth 60 credits. The total number of credits awarded is 180 for an MSc course.

The course will provide a first year of research training for students intending to continue with postgraduate research or further professional training within mental health or Clinical Psychology.

We expect that this course will significantly improve the chances of students gaining a place on Clinical Psychology Courses as well as providing overseas students with a basic training for job opportunities in their home countries.

The School of Psychology offers three Overseas Academic Scholarships of £3,000 each to overseas (international) taught postgraduate students. Advanced Practice in Health Care Course Structure

The Advanced Practice in Health Care course is taught at the St. David’s Park site in Carmarthen. There are two student intakes per year, one in October and another in March. Students also have access to the extensive facilities at the Singleton Park campus in Swansea.

The course consists of two parts.

For students beginning the course in October, Part One modules are taught for one day a week between October and May for the first two years.

For students beginning the course in March, Part One modules are taught for one day a week between March and January for the first two years, however teaching days are in line with normal University holidays.

Part Two consists of the dissertation which has to be submitted by 30th September in the third year.

The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme comprises several compulsory modules with some optional modules available.

Students are assessed using a variety of methods including essays, presentations and objective structured clinical examinations. The assessment for each module must be successfully completed.

Clinical psychology focuses on the challenges faced by people with clinical, mental or physical (neuropsychological) health conditions. The role of the clinical psychologist is to work with these individuals and attempt to improve their quality of life.

The Abnormal and Clinical Psychology course will greatly enhance students’ suitability for professional clinical training, for example a three year DClin Clinical Psychology programme at a BPS accredited training centre.

Entry onto a clinical psychology doctorate training programme is extremely competitive, with candidates usually expected to have acquired training and experience beyond degree level. 

The MSc degree provides a valuable academic foundation for future doctoral training in clinical psychology, it is largely theory-based and is designed to address core topics in abnormal and clinical psychology.

Clinical training courses also look for evidence of clinical experience with relevant client groups.

Swansea University does not provide this directly, but work experience (paid and voluntary) may be available through the local NHS Psychology Services. Opportunities may also be available locally through independent and private sector organisations (e.g. Mind Cymru, Headway, private rehabilitation services, etc.). These opportunities are regularly advertised and students are supported in making the most of them. 

Please note this course does not lead to a clinical qualification recognised by the British Psychological Society.

Abnormal and Clinical Psychology Course Structure

The one year, full-time degree for Abnormal and Clinical Psychology requires students to attend the University for two full days a week (normally Monday and Tuesday).

The two-year part-time degree requires students to attend the University for one full day a week.

In the first two semesters taught modules are provided with the research project typically undertaken during the summer months.

On occasion sessions are arranged on other days of the week (e.g. when visiting clinician talks/workshops or employability sessions). 

Teaching is done via group sessions with practical classes provided on research and design topics. These will be assessed via written course work and a written examination.

Gain significant recognition in your field whilst continuing to work in your own team, with our course for health and social care staff aiming to become Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs).

Our course combines practice and theory to offer you the most effective learning experience. With the support from your employer, you'll shadow your local AMHP duty team to gain a valuable insight into the role. You’ll also study in university over a six-month period, while working two days a week in your own team.

You’ll learn beside a variety of professionals, from expert practitioners and service users to law professional trainers and psychiatric staff. We’ll also encourage you to visit services, such as older people wards or Child and Adolescent Mental Health, to gain further experience in clinical practice.

Before starting the course, we’ll visit you to put together a learning programme that best suits you and your teams. To prepare you for your first day, you’ll be expected to attend a five day pre-AMHP course in either August or September.

The design of the course is such that it enhances the collaboration between disciplines working with children, adolescents and families with mental health problems. The programme is firmly grounded in a body of knowledge that aims to promote excellence in the participant's area of practice. It is designed to provide an academically robust education for the participants and the various modules offered develop and complement subjects undertaken at degree or 'equivalent' level.

This M.Sc. in Mental Health (Child, Adolescent and Family strand) offers the student two specialist modules in year one, a number of core modules shared with other MSc students, as well as clinical placements. The specialist modules are 'Child and Adolescent and Family Mental Health Interventions' and 'Theoretical and Evidenced Based Practices in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health.

Students on this programme are recognised as practising professionals with a resource of practice and educational skills and knowledge that will enhance their learning at this advanced stage of their personal and professional pathway. Each student is considered unique in life experiences, motivation for learning, learning style and scholastic ability. Throughout the programme a variety of student-focused teaching strategies is used, including co-operative learning, self-directed learning and experiential learning methods. Interdisciplinary sharing of knowledge and perspectives is encouraged and rewarded. Students' past experiences are valued and integrated as a rich source of reflection and learning. Feedback and support are tailored to meet the individual needs of the student. Students also have an opportunity to engage in shaping aspects of the educational programme.

Students are enabled to reflect, inquire, critique, problem solve, evaluate and debate professional and practice issues in an academically robust manner. Students are empowered to generate evidence that will improve practice and are guided and supported through that process. Graduates of this programme, in applying their learning, can be expected to provide high quality care, leadership and education and to promote and develop excellence in their practice setting. The student is viewed as an active participant with responsibility for his/her own learning and development. Hence, the curriculum is focused on a transactional model of education, which strives to be collegial in nature and promotes independent, self-directed learning and self-evaluation.

All students register on the MSc course in the first instance. Students may choose to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health on successful completion of six modules. Students who successfully complete all the required elements of the M.Sc. course will be awarded an M.Sc. in Mental Health. The Child, Adolescent and Family strand of the MSc in Mental Health may only be taken over two years.

Admission Requirements

Candidates for this course will be currently working in mental health/mental illness field; and in the case of the Child, adolescent and family strand, be working in child, adolescent and family mental health services and have a minimum of one year's recent experience in the area of mental health/mental illness; and in the case of the child, adolescent and family strand, be currently employed in the area of mental health/mental illness/child, adolescent and family services and have Garda clearance for working with children and adolescents. Candidates will also normally hold an honors degree in a relevant discipline; or otherwise satisfy the selection panel that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course.

Who is it for?

This postgraduate course develops knowledge and skills to enable practitioners to work effectively with colleagues from a range of professional backgrounds, and to critically explore the dynamics and challenges of working in this context considering innovative ways of meeting the mental health needs of individuals and communities.

It is designed for all healthcare professionals working in mental health services including nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, other clinical staff, and workers from a wide range of allied statutory and voluntary agencies.

Objectives

The MSc Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Adult Mental Health) is designed for all healthcare professionals working in mental health services.

The course will provide students with the skills, knowledge and awareness in the assessment and formulation of mental health problems, evidence-based psychosocial interventions and contemporary issues in mental health. There is an opportunity to critically evaluate risk assessment and management across the life span as well as to understand the concepts which inform professional leadership. Students will develop a greater awareness of inter-professional practice and communication as well as an emphasis is on collaborative practice. The development of ethical and culturally sensitive practice and the placement of the service user and their carers are key priorities within this programme.

You will be given the opportunity to discuss key debates in health and social care provision, within multi-professional and interdisciplinary contexts. The course is designed to enhance the abilities of health professionals to critically evaluate approaches to compassionate mental health care and consider innovative ways of meeting the mental health needs of individuals and communities.

Academic facilities

Simulated practice enables you to practise your skills in a safe environment, in preparation for transferring these skills to a 'real life' setting. Our specialist Clinical Skills Centre at City’s Northampton Square Campus has been designed especially for teaching and reflects clinical environments and working wards, so you can familiarise yourself with equipment and practices before commencing placements.

Teaching and learning

We take a blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including insitution-based taught modules; e-learning, work-based learning, lectures, self-directed study; tutorials; class-based seminars; reflective study; enquiry based learning; and workshops.

Modules are run by experienced practitioners and leading researchers, using a variety of direct and interactive teaching methods. Students will learn in large and small multiprofessional, multidisciplinary groups and will be supported to participate in independent learning.

Assessment

Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of a Masters level course, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. Assessment is diverse and includes:

  • Essays
  • reflective practice
  • objective structured clinical examinations
  • practice-based assessments
  • poster presentations
  • case studies
  • data analysis
  • seminar presentations with supporting papers.

Modules

Students must gain 60 credits for a Postgraduate Certificate and 120 credits for a Postgraduate Diploma. The addition of a dissertation leads to an MSc.

Career prospects

Our Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care graduates will gain a deep understanding and knowledge of adult mental health enabling them to work effectively and collaboratively across professional agencies and boundaries.

Previous students have gone on to secure influential roles within the professional areas of mental health and social care, the voluntary sector and health policy and management. Successful completion of the MSc fulfils the requirements for higher-grade, senior advanced practice posts in health and social care and qualifies students to apply for research posts and to conduct independent research.
