Respiratory disease has a significant impact on the health of the population, and the use of health care resources both in the United Kingdom and in the world. Our respiratory medicine courses will enable more health care professionals to have the required knowledge to treat patients. The course is developed by taking note of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guidance on Respiratory Medicine, the curriculum subjects of the Specialty Certificate Exam of the Royal College of Physicians and that of the Royal College of General Practitioners (Respiratory) with an emphasis on the management of these conditions in both primary and secondary care in the UK and abroad.

Diploma in Respiratory Medicine

Our online 1 year Postgraduate Diploma in Respiratory Medicine is designed to be practical and clinically focused. Our course will provide an integrated approach to Respiratory Medicine and focus on applying scientific principles to direct patient care. The Postgraduate Diploma in Respiratory Medicine course is worth 120 credits and comprises 6 modules of 20 credits each.

The course aims to equip graduates with critical knowledge and understanding of Respiratory Medicine. Graduates will be able to apply knowledge for direct clinical benefit and future study. Our course is the only one of its kind that is accessible online and is the fastest route to a PGDip/MSc.

Our Postgraduate Diploma in Respiratory Medicine has been designed for Doctors, GPs, Allied Health Professionals, Nurses and those with related undergraduate degrees (e.g. Pharmacists) or equivalent professional qualifications and background experience.

Assessment

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

Facilitates clinical case discussions with the group.
Monitors, assesses and marks each student throughout the module.
Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).

MSc in Respiratory Medicine

Entry to the 1 year Msc in Respiratory Medicine will require the successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Respiratory Medicine (120 credits) either from the University of South Wales or from another UK University.

Our Respiratory Medicine Masters of Science course has been developed for health professionals who are interested in a leadership role within Respiratory Medicine including GP’s, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, pharmacists, and other suitably qualified and interested individuals.

The MSc Respiratory Medicine course is the only one of its title that is accessible online, and is not offered by any other institution. On completion of the course, you will be able to demonstrate:

An applied understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in an appropriate clinical setting.

The course is designed and suitable for qualified podiatrists with clinical experience and an interest in sports medicine. This programme is based on the philosophy that the total care for the athlete requires a multidisciplinary approach underpinned by evidenced based medicine.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity in the future, possibly as early as 2018, to sit a Fellowship examination in Podiatric Sports Medicine which will be awarded by The Directorate of Podiatric Medicine, College of Podiatry, London.

Students will have the opportunity to transfer from the PGCert to an MSc/PGDip in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

The programme is delivered by Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) within the William Harvey Research Institute and as such, will place the School at the forefront of provision of Podiatric Sports Medicine (PSM) within the UK. Working in sport is a largely practical discipline and the programme's emphasis lies firmly on regular clinical experience. Students will benefit from regular contact with members of Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), as well as visiting clinicians and lecturers who are experienced Sports Medicine specialists.

This course is designed to offer a mastery of foundation concepts and skills in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Lectures will be delivered by national and international experts; from cutting edge basic scientists to podiatric surgeons, sports physicians, physiotherapists and other health professionals working with world-class athletes. Our staff will work closely with students to nurture potential research interests and to develop clinical ability in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Course content covers detailed assessment and management of sports injuries of the lower limb, especially foot, ankle and lower leg with imaging in sports medicine to assist in supporting clinical diagnosis.

The PSM programme will offer a modular PGCert structure with an innovative practical component involving clinical shadowing and mentoring. Students will be exposed to unique clinical learning opportunities, such as the monthly inter-disciplinary combined clinic, that will challenge and sharpen diagnostic skills. An interactive and supportive clinician-student relationship will be a feature of clinics on the postgraduate programme.

-To provide a sound clinical base in Podiatric Sports Medicine on which to build future clinical practice with confidence in making a diagnosis and thinking beyond biomechanics.

Such qualifications are also regarded as integral by the individuals' regulatory authorities, such as the GDC, GMC and NMC.

Teaching Methods

Each module has the same format. Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Group projects are undertaken alongside independent projects. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice.

Teaching starts with 1 day of introductory lectures. Students may attend these lectures in the UK (Glyntaff campus, University of South Wales)

The lecture series are delivered by the faculty and tutors, they are a pre-course organiser, giving students the tools required to undertake the online course such as:

  • Scientific writing
  • Levels of evidence
  • Harvard referencing
  • Reflective writing

The lectures series give an opportunity to meet face to face with tutors/other students prior to the online course.

You’ll be trained in historical research methods and conceptual and methodological approaches to the history of health, medicine and society. You can combine British, European and African history under the guidance of leading researchers in History, History and Philosophy and Science and Medieval Studies. You’ll have the chance to focus on topics and periods that suit your own interests, whether that’s the history of health, medicine and society in the Middle Ages or the First World War.

Looking at the health of individuals, families and communities, you could study the human life course from birth to death, the experiences of medical practitioners and caregivers, medicine during periods of war and conflict, or the impact of health policy in different societies. It’s an exciting opportunity to explore how health and medicine have always been shaped by the social and cultural context.

Specialist resources

We have an exceptional range of resources to help you explore the topics that interest you. The world-class Brotherton Library holds a wealth of resources in its Special Collections, including historical works on health, medicine, cookery and medicinal uses of food, as well as extensive archival material about the history of medicine, surgery and nursing during the First World War and across the region since the eighteenth century.

You’ll be encouraged to participate in events run by the School of History’s lively ‘Health, Medicine and Society’ research group, including seminars, reading group sessions and a postgraduate symposium. You’ll also be able to attend a huge range of other events at the University of Leeds, including seminars at the Centre for History and Philosophy of Science and the Leeds Centre for Medical Humanities.

You’ll also have access to the University’s Museum of Science, Technology and Medicine, which is especially rich in its medical collections, and we have close links with the Thackray Medical Museum in east Leeds and its 47,000 medical objects.

Course content

The first semester will lay the foundations of your studies, introducing you to historical research methods, and key sources, debates and methodologies in the history of health, medicine and society. You’ll take part in a source analysis workshop and gain practical knowledge of documentary, visual and material sources in the university and local area which can be used to study the history of health, medicine and society.

You’ll also develop specialist knowledge of the development of the history of medicine and the social history of medicine as historical sub-disciplines, and the place of health and medicine within the discipline of history.

In Semester Two, you’ll build on this knowledge with your choice from a wide range of optional modules, including specialist topics such as birth , death and illness in the Middle Ages; Medicine and warfare in the 19th and 20th centuries or disease and sexuality in Africa. You’ll also have the opportunity to work collaboratively with partner organisations, such as the West Yorkshire Archive Service, by studying the ‘Making History: Archive collaborations’ module.

Throughout the programme, you’ll develop your knowledge across a variety of areas as well as key skills in research and critical analysis. You’ll showcase these skills when you complete your dissertation, which will be independently researched on a topic of your choice and submitted by the end of the programme in September.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

This includes conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, which has a prevalence of 10% amongst females as well as low testosterone and erectile dysfunction amongst men. Similarly, with 10% of couples presenting to primary care with issues relating to fertility, this is a common primary care problem yet it is not covered adequately in training.

Teaching Methods

Each module has the same format. Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice. Teaching starts with 1 day of introductory lectures. Students may attend these lectures in the UK (Glyntaff campus, University of South Wales). The lecture series are delivered by the faculty and tutors, they are a pre-course organiser, giving students the tools required to undertake the online course such as:

Learning and teaching

Attendance is compulsory and will be approximately one and a half days a month (you will not be expected to be in every week). Recorded lectures of shared modules with other courses will be available to be viewed online, along with specified eLearning material.

Seminars will be recorded, where appropriate. Some practical sessions, group tutorials and specific teaching sessions will be compulsory.

Placements at appropriate professional clubs and NHS clinics will be organised, with some flexibility to negotiate clinic dates and times, and contacts will be provided for self-organised additional experience opportunities. Predominantly we use a case based approach; the eLearning each week will have a relevant case or scenario identified, and required reading and practical tasks set.

There will be a variety of assessments, appropriate for vocational character of the course and the nature of the subjects studied. These will include

The capabilities of the HPL can be broadly divided into two areas: musculoskeletal biomechanics and physiological testing.

Musculoskeletal biomechanics

The HPL carries 4 Codamotion Cx1 infra-red scanning units that are used extensively for 3-dimensional motion analysis. This system is fully integrated with 2 ground embedded Kistler force plates and a 16 channel wireless EMG system. The integration of these systems allows for full analysis of movement, forces associated with movement and measuring muscular effort during movement. In addition, the HPL also boasts a 64 channel EMG system for multichannel work and an isokinetic dynamometer, which can be used for both research and rehabilitation.

Physiological testing

Delivered in partnership with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the world’s largest aeromedical provider, the Graduate Certificate in Retrieval Medicine focuses on current and future retrieval systems and evidence based approaches within both an Australian and international context.

The program is structured to accommodate the busy health professional. Delivered in part-time mode, it combines intensive practical residential components with online delivery that enables networking opportunities.

The residential components are held as a compulsory 3 to 4 day intensive per semester. They will include case-based discussions and hands-on immersive learning sessions where technical and physical aspects of retrieval medicine will be covered. Topics will range from helicopter (rotary wing), fixed wing, ground and common retrieval equipment familiarisation through to pre-hospital critical care skills sessions. You will engage in ‘real world’ scenarios and simulation demonstrating retrieval medicine in action. Intense, small group interactive case-based discussions also play a role in the residential component and online learning throughout the semester.

The Graduate Certificate in Retrieval Medicine enables you to matriculate into the Graduate Diploma in Retrieval Medicine and the Masters of Retrieval Medicine.

The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) calls family doctors "our rising stars of the future". This reflects WHO’s renewed commitment to build family medicine as a specialty across all regions. Strengthening family medicine has been recognized as a key component of achieving Universal Health Coverage as part of the Sustainable Development Goals to which every country committed at the last United Nations General Assembly. This degree aims to build on this momentum for strengthening primary care by developing competent family physicians who are empowered to become leaders and advocates for the future of the profession.

The University of Edinburgh provides high quality postgraduate medical education in through an online distance learning format. Students are from a variety of countries across the world, each bringing their unique experiences to create a vibrant global learning community. The programme will give doctors the essential medical knowledge and management skills for the common presenting health issues and explore management within the context of the principles, processes, and practices of family medicine. The programme will equip students with the skills to become expert family physicians whose approach will provide continuous, coordinated, comprehensive and cost effective care build around an understanding of the patient in the context of the family and the community.

The degree is awarded by the University of Edinburgh and is taught in partnership with the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. Experienced members of the International Christian Medical and Dental Association (ICMDA) are also involved in delivering teaching and supervising students.

Online learning

This blended distance learning programme is delivered via the Moodle platform with the support of our partner institution CMC Vellore, India. Students have access to comprehensive learning materials as well as the University of Edinburgh’s library resources. Online tutorials are delivered regularly by experts in the field.

Programme structure

There are seven compulsory courses and a dissertation. Courses cover:

  • Family Medicine 1: Introduction to Family Medicine
  • Family Medicine 2: Non-communicable disease
  • Family Medicine 3: Child and Maternal Health
  • Family Medicine 4: Special groups of patients (including mental health, geriatrics and palliative care)
  • Principles and Practice 1: Professionalism and Roles and Responsibilities of the Family Physician
  • Principles and Practice 2: Communication/consultation skills, Health Informatics, Ethics, Leadership and Quality Improvement.
  • Evidence Based Medicine

The dissertation provides the opportunity for the student to undertake an extended piece of scholarship in an area of personal interest and is undertaken in the last few months of the programme.

The online teaching is complemented by a two week period of face-to-face teaching each year. This builds on the online content and provides practical clinical training. This teaching is currently delivered in four sites across the world: India, Nigeria, Uganda and Egypt. Attendance provides the unique opportunity to travel and view the practice of Family Medicine in other countries whilst meeting and learning from fellow students.

In addition there is the opportunity to participate in a 30 days clinical internship following completion of the Masters qualification. This is an optional activity aimed at providing additional clinical experience to those who have completed the course.

Career opportunities

The programme is aimed to provide doctors with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become effective Family Physicians. It is relevant to doctors of all backgrounds and experience from early career doctors to those established in other specialities.

The programme provides a high quality Masters level qualification in Family Medicine and builds on the skills already gained by the student in their post graduate clinical training. It is not a recognised vocational training course and cannot be used for direct entry to clinical practice as a Family Physician.

The MSc and Diploma
The MSc is a 3-year 180 credit MSc, including a 60 credit 10000+/- 500 word dissertation in year 3. It offers two years of structured web based teaching via an online learning platform. For students who wish not to complete a dissertation in year 3, a 2-year Diploma is offered based on the lectures, tutorials and course work.

This course commences September 2017
The course is online, allowing you to study at your own pace and in your own time, enabling you to continue with your work commitments. It provides an excellent structured learning platform for trainees and specialists to develop skills in this area. Lectures are delivered by leading experts in the field with the same lecturer/course leads offering weekly tutorials.

In the first two years the course offers 8 modules covering different areas of critical care. Each of the eight modules runs over 10 weeks, In year 3 the 60-credit dissertation is completed by students completing the MSc.

The Taster MOOC – free online learning
The massive open online course (MOOC) is an opportunity for you to improve your skills and to learn about Emergency and Resuscitation Medicine from an international faculty of world class speakers. The MOOC will give you a taste of what is on offer at masters and Diploma level. The MOOC includes lectures on the recognition and treatment of shock and provides an introduction to statistics and critical appraisal.

The MOOC is a free to access, distance learning package allowing you to study at your own pace and in your own time. This taster course will allow you to access all the teaching material from modules 1 and 2 of the MSc including video lectures., The MOOC will not include content such as the MCQs, online lectures and tutorials, which are reserved for those studying the full MSc/PGDip programme.
