This exciting Chinese-English Translation MA programme develops an understanding of translation in a global context. You will explore how practical translation is informed by theory, develop your verbal and written communication skills and build your IT literacy to help you produce translation of the highest quality.

Overseas students will come to the UK not only to learn advanced translation skills from and into Chinese, but also to develop their English language skills and their knowledge of UK culture first-hand. The course is also open to students for whom English is a native language as long as their command of Chinese is at a high level.

The MA in Chinese-English Translation will enable you to develop the skills in translation, interpreting, analytical thinking, research and collaboration that are essential to today's workplace and which will equip you to facilitate communication between cultures.

The School of Modern Languages has an established record in translator training and excellent industry links. Its translation staff include practising professional translators and translation researchers. We are a corporate member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and an institutional member of the American Translators’ Association (ATA). We are on the ATA’s list of approved providers of translator training.

Programme Structure

Semester One
During the first semester, all students will participate in weekly workshop­-style classes in the Applied Translation unit taught by experienced professional translators. By grappling with a variety of different texts, participating in class discussions and receiving personal feedback from tutors, students will build the key skills necessary to grow and develop their translation ability.

The Theories of Translation unit is a lecture-based course that gives an opportunity for advanced reflection on the modes and purposes of translation within the translator’s social and cultural context, while also equipping students with the theoretical tools and approaches necessary for practical translation and further research.

Units in English for Translators and in Academic English build an awareness of how language works and help to hone English skills for professional purposes. Students whose native language is English may substitute these units for another.

Semester Two
During the second semester, the two main core units for all students are a 15,000 word dissertation and an Introduction to Specialised Translation. The dissertation takes the form of either an extended translation plus commentary, or a research-­based dissertation. The supervision process gives students time to formulate their ideas and plan their approach, as for many this will be the most substantial piece of extended writing they have undertaken.

The Introduction to Specialised Translation unit adopts a similar approach to Applied Translation, but focuses on key specialist areas that are in demand in the translation industry. Specialist topics can vary but may include literary, legal, scientific, medical and translation for technology.

In addition to the two core units above, students are also given the opportunity to select from a variety of optional units.

Careers

The MA in Chinese-­English Translation provides a foundation for students looking to enter or develop their careers in translation project management, freelance translation or as in-­house translators and interpreters in international corporate and government institutions.

The skills developed through this degree are transferable to a variety of related careers, such as international relations, PR, marketing and business. In addition, the research and theoretical components of this programme provide an excellent entry point to the field of Translation Studies for anyone aiming to pursue a PhD in the UK or abroad.

This innovative programme, in partnership with the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering, offers a unique graduate pathway into this flourishing sector.

Degree information

This programme combines medical device scientific research and development with training in translation techniques, enterprise and entrepreneurship. Students will learn about entrepreneurial finance and gain knowledge in business management, while carrying out technical research that will give them a solid grounding in medical device development. The programme provides the essential skills to move forward in the medical device sector.

Students take modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of two core modules (30 credits), two optional modules (30 credits), and a dissertation/report (120 credits).

The UCL Medical Statistics degree provides students with a sound background in theoretical statistics as well as practical hands-on experience in designing, analysing and interpreting health studies, including trials and observational studies. The research project is assessed through the dissertation and a 15-minute presentation.

Workshops running during the teaching terms provide preparation for this project and cover the communication of statistics, for example, the presentation of statistical graphs and tables.

Dramatic developments in imaging both anatomy and molecular processes, especially using Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Medical Imaging Sciences aims to provide graduates of chemistry, physics, computing, mathematics, biology, pharmacy or medicine, with advanced training in the imaging field. Intended mainly as preparation for a PhD, but also serves as training for employment in hospitals and industry. Key components are two research projects, which may be linked around different aspects of a single research area in medical imaging.

- Course purpose -

Medical imaging is a rapidly expanding field that needs input from team members with knowledge and skills in these different areas (chemistry, physics, computing, mathematics, biology, pharmacy, medicine) to achieve its promise in improving patient care. The aim of this MRes programme is to provide students who have graduated in any of these subject areas with advanced training to prepare them to apply their specialist graduate skills in the imaging field. The programme is intended mainly as a preparation for a PhD in the field, at King's or elsewhere, but it also serves as training for employment in hospitals and industry.

- Course format and assessment -

Taught modules are presented in a variety of formats, including lectures, workshops, laboratory practicals, site visits etc. Assessment is based on coursework and examination.

Both research projects are carried out under the supervision of academics within the Division’s five departments (Biomedical Engineering; Cancer Imaging; Cardiovascular Imaging; Imaging Chemistry and Biology and Perinatal Imaging and Health). Some research projects may take place in a collaborating laboratory elsewhere in King's or at a collaborating institution.

About the department

Now delivered through the Keele Medical School and the Research Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine, the course dates as far back as 1999, when it was established in partnership with Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics at the University Hospital. Most teaching now takes place in the Guy Hilton Research Centre, a dedicated research facility located on the hospital campus. The medical school is one of the top-ranked in the UK, and the research institute has an international reputation for world-leading research.

The centre was opened in 2006 and offers state-of-the-art equipment for translational research including newly-developed diagnostic instruments, advanced imaging modalities and additive manufacturing facilities. Its location adjacent to the university hospital ensures that students experience real-world patient care and the role that technology plays in that. Students also have access to advanced equipment for physiological measurement, motion analysis and functional assessment in other hospital and campus-based laboratories. The School embraces specialists working in UHNM and RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital Oswestry, covering key medical and surgical subspecialties.

The course runs alongside its sister course, the MSc in Biomedical Engineering, and an EPSRC-MRC funded Centre for Doctoral Training, ensuring a stimulating academic environment for students and many opportunities for engaging with further study and research.

Course Content

The aim of the course is to provide multidisciplinary Masters level postgraduate training in Cell and Tissue Engineering to prepare students for future employment in healthcare, industrial and academic environments. This involves building on existing undergraduate knowledge in basic science or engineering and applying it to core principles and current issues in medicine and healthcare.

Specifically, the objectives of the course are to:
- provide postgraduate-level education leading to professional careers in Cell and Tissue Engineering in industry, academia and a wide range of healthcare establishments such as medical organisations, medical research institutions and hospitals;

- provide an opportunity for in-depth research into specialist and novel areas of Biomaterials, and Cell and Tissue Engineering;

- expose students to the clinically translational environment within an active medical research environment with hands-on practical ability and supporting knowledge of up-to-date technological developments at the forefront of the field;

- introduce students to exciting new fields such as regenerative medicine, nanotechnology and novel devices for physiological monitoring and diagnostics.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course is taught through subject-centred lectures and seminars, supported by tutorials and practical exercises. Collaborative learning and student-centred learning are also adopted giving widespread opportunity for group work and individual assignments. Students are required to conduct extensive independent study, and this is supported by full access to two libraries, online journal access and a suite of dedicated computers for exclusive use by MSc students on the course. In addition, students are supported by the guidance of a personal tutor within the department, as well as having access to university-wide support services. This includes English language support where appropriate.

Assessment

Modules will be assessed by a mixture of assessment methods, including lab reports, essays, and presentations, and final examination. This ensures the development of a range of transferrable employability skills such as time management and planning, written and verbal communication and numeracy as well as technical and subject-specific knowledge. The project dissertation forms a major component of the student’s assessed work.

The MMedSci Oncology at Keele has been specifically designed to enable an introduction to a research programme whilst offering sustained clinical interaction throughout the course. Keele University has a strong track record of clinically translational research, enabled by the close interaction of clinical interventionists with world leading academic researchers. This course benefits entirely from this bench-to-bedside ethos and will support like-minded students across this multidisciplinary environment. The course should serve as a platform to develop a medical research career.

As would be expected from such a clinically involved course, much of the teaching takes place at Keele University’s hospital campus located in the Royal Stoke University Hospital, University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) Trust. Keele University’s flagship research Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine (ISTM) is integrated with the hospital with the strategically aligned Guy Hilton Research Centre being located directly adjacent to the hospital. Being opened in 2006, this research centre offers patient treatment alongside state-of-the-art equipment and translational research. The centre has enabled research active clinical members to drive cutting-edge research and streamline the pipeline to patient benefit. The Oncology Department located in UHNM provides chemotherapy, radiotherapy, brachytherapy, clinical trials, and lymphoedema and haematology/oncology outpatients to a population of approximately 845,000. It is one of the top ten performing Trusts in the UK for delivering Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT). This course offers the opportunity to interact closely with both clinical and research environments, with theoretical, practical and research-centric approaches underpinning the delivery of taught modules, clinical attachments and research projects.

Advances in the management of oncological patients are much needed in our rapidly aging community. New methods are continually being introduced allowing clinicians to better understand and react to patient care in an effort to maximise patient benefit and minimise in-patient time and treatment side effects. The MMedSci Oncology course offers the opportunity to harness the capabilities of cutting edge research to drive new concepts in a clinically transformative capacity.

Course Aims

MMedSci Oncology draws together the fundamental principles of current oncological patient management, clinical practice, stem cell and pathology techniques for clinical assessment of tissue and biological samples, with a focus on research-driven work closely related to ‘real world’ clinical practice. Further, transferable skills are delivered through intensive Clinical Audit, Health Informatics, and Leadership & Management modules. The course is open to third year medical students and above, qualified doctors and qualified health professionals with an interest in Oncology.

Course Content

The course is structured to sit within the framework of Keele University’s MMedSci route, with module timescales allowing, if necessary, to be taken full-time within the one year of entry. The structure has been specifically designed to maximise both clinical engagement, support from taught components and research experience. The course is split between non-optional core modules that students must take to progress on the MMedSci Oncology route, with at least 4 of the elective modules as listed below.

Teaching & Assessment

All content is delivered from leaders in representative fields, either from academic staff in the University, or from active clinical staff in the National Health Service. Course content will develop students’ fundamental knowledge of the diagnosis and management of oncological patients. An appreciation regarding patient informed consent and establishment/ delivery of clinical trials is also covered alongside Research Methods, accumulating to a 6 month research project. Students will attend clinical seminars, multidisciplinary and mortality meetings within the UHNM Oncology Department to sustain engagement of the clinical delivery of topics taught throughout the course.

Students will be immersed in the clinical environment focussed on oncological management, with an emphasis on research procedures and translation of cutting-edge research into the clinic.

Assessment will be carried out by attending clinics, lectures and meetings, presentation of a patient case report, and a written assignment linked to the research project.

The taught modules are designed to stimulate a deep and critical knowledge of research. The optional modules allow you to develop a comprehensive knowledge of different approaches to medical research.

The Paper Criticism module enables you to develop subject-specific skills, such as an understanding of the ethical issues of medicine and knowledge of the current requirements for the governance of medical research and its publication. You apply your knowledge of research methods to published papers and enhance your critical skills.

The Analytic Research module provides a critical awareness of research planning and methods and develops your research skills. It includes topics on the structure of analytic research investigations; the analysis of the data obtained in analytic studies, especially the metrics used; the problems resulting from bias and confounding and how they are dealt with; basic statistics of precision and comparison;dealing with unequal duration of follow-up in cohort studies; and critical appraisal of published research.

The Capturing and Handling Data in Research module is an introduction to the collection and handling of health research data. It will include topics on: social inclusion in research; sampling from populations; types of data; collecting data through questionnaires; how scales and tests are used to collect data; and how data are collected and described using various fractions such as rates, ratios, risks and odds; recording quantitative and qualitative data in suitable formats; using computers in the analysis of data; the importance of the statistics that summarise quantitative data; and an introduction to the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Critical appraisal of published research will underpin theory.

Learning and teaching

There are few formal lectures in the MRes programme. Most of your time is devoted to planning and conducting the research project, usually working with a small team of researchers or healthcare professionals.

Interactive tutorial sessions are shared with students on other Masters programmes in the School of Medicine, intercalating medical students and health professionals.

Assessment

There is one examination in May for the Paper Criticism module. Other modules are assessed by the submission of coursework, workbooks, reports and reviews.

Exit awards of Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Research (120 credits) or Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Research (60 credits) are available for this programme.

It is a unique course designed to train those who wish to pursue a research career in reproductive medicine or pregnancy or to work in associated areas in health or science. Students do not need any prior research experience before undertaking this course.

You will undertake two interrelated research projects on a specific topic in reproduction and pregnancy, alongside taught units providing up to date knowledge of reproduction and pregnancy and training in research skills.

The MRes is based in the Manchester Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre (MFHRC), the largest pregnancy research group in Europe and the Tommy's Stillbirth Research Centre. We have strong links with the Reproductive Medicine Department at St Mary's Hospital, Manchester.

We aim to find solutions to reproduction and pregnancy problems through a holistic approach to understanding, managing and treating diseases affecting mothers and babies, and through training the next generation of researchers in an interdisciplinary research environment. We conduct translational medicine research 'from bench to bedside', which is related to all aspects of pregnancy, from embryo implantation, through to pregnancy pathologies and developmental programming in the offspring.

The MFHRC has internationally renowned researchers in IVF/early pregnancy, placental biology, pregnancy complications and stillbirth. Our clinical academic researchers have developed world leading research antenatal clinics for high risk pregnancies. Integration of the research clinics and the research laboratories provides rich opportunity for translation from clinic to laboratory and application of research findings to the clinic.

Students will be based in the MFHRC and will be an active part of the research centre. We place a major emphasis on training the next generation of researchers and have approximately 40 trainee researchers (both basic science and clinical researchers) undertaking research as part of their degrees or training (from undergraduate, through the PhD and postdoctoral research).

Our MRes graduates have continued their scientific or medical careers in the following areas.
-PhD research - 70% of home science graduates and 40% of our international graduates go on to conduct further research.
