The Master's programme has a strong emphasis on research, especially during the first year, but allows you to broaden your horizons towards the fields of Management, Communication and Education during the second year. - Research trains students for fundamental and applied research. This specialisation is required for people pursuing a PhD position or a position in industrial or institutional research.

- Personal tutor

The programme offers you many opportunities to follow your own interests under the guidance of a personal tutor. Each time you start a research internship you will select a research group and be allocated a supervisor. Together you will decide which research to carry out and the specialisations and subject choices that most effectively support it. In practice you will be occupied for four days a week with your own research and one day will be devoted to lectures.

Why study Oral Biology at Dundee?

This course is specifically designed for individuals who wish to pursue career pathways in academic oral biology, with a focus, though not exclusively, on developing individuals who can deliver and, more importantly, lead oral biology courses within dental schools.

Oral Biology is a significant subject area that is integral to undergraduate and postgraduate dental training worldwide. The scope of Oral Biology includes a range of basic and applied sciences that underpin the practise of dentistry. These subjects include: oral and dental anatomy; craniofacial and dental development; oral physiology; oral neuroscience; oral microbiology. These subjects will be integrated with the relevant disease processes, for example, craniofacial anomalies, dental caries and tooth surface loss.

Teaching and Assessment

The Dental School is well placed to deliver such a course with an established staff of teaching and research active within oral biology, and its related fields, an in-house e-learning technologist and substantial links to the Centre for Medical Education in the School of Medicine. There will be an opportunity for students to exit with a PGCert in Oral Biology after successful completion of modules 1 -4 or a Diploma in Oral Biology after successful completion of modules 1 - 7.

How you will be taught

The programme will be delivered via a blend of methodologies including: face-to-face lectures / seminars / tutorials; on-line learning; directed and self- directed practical work; self-directed study; journal clubs.
What you will study

The MSc will be taught full-time over one year (September to August). Semester one (Modules 1 – 4) and Semester 2A, 2B (Modules 5 – 8) will provide participants with wide ranging, in-depth knowledge of oral biology, together with focused training in research (lab-base, dissertation or e- Learning) and its associated methodology. The MSc course is built largely on new modules (5) supported by 2 modules run conjointly with the Centre for Medical Education within the Medical School. All modules are compulsory:

The project is designed to encourage students to further develop their skills. This could take the form of a supervised laboratory research project, a literature based dissertation or an educational project. The educational project would be based around the development of an innovative learning resource utilising the experience of the dental school learning technologist.

How you will be assessed

Exams on the taught element of the programme will be held at the end of semester one. Essays and assignments will also contribute to the final mark, and the dissertation will be assessed through the production of a thesis and a viva exam.

Careers

The MSc Oral Biology is aimed at dental or science graduates who are either early in their careers or wish to establish themselves as oral biologists within dental schools. Oral Biology is a recognised discipline in many dental schools worldwide. Graduates will have gained sufficient knowledge and skills to enable them to be teachers, innovators and educational leaders in the field. In addition, successful graduates will be well placed to undertake further postgraduate study at PhD level. Students choosing this MSc degree will enjoy a comprehensive course that covers the key aspects of practical and theoretical medically-related molecular biology, developing advanced skills in this area.

Description
The course is composed of a modular 120-credit taught component and a 60-credit research project and dissertation. The taught component covers a broad range of medical molecular topics and techniques and includes thorough laboratory training. The course is run in conjuncture with our School of Medicine to ensure that students gain a broad view of modern molecular biology and laboratory techniques.

Overseas Students
A two-year course aimed at students from non-European Union countries who come to the UK requiring pre-MSc level training in English language and basic pre-MSc molecular biology. The first year of this course will bring students up to a level where they will be capable of studying for a full MSc degree and it will develop English language skills to the minimum level required for MSc level learning. Year one will be run in conjunction with ELCOS (English Language Courses for Overseas Students). Students can obtain the minimal English certification for MSc entry.

The Medical Sciences MSc has a flexible modular structure that is designed to provide a broad-based training in current knowledge and research in medical sciences, medicine and dentistry. Delivery

The Medical Sciences MSc is an intensive taught course delivered by the Faculty of Medical Sciences and is based on the Newcastle University campus.

In semester one, you will follow three 20-credit subject-focused optional modules. Most modules are taught in either the morning or afternoon of one day each week. There are in-course assessments and you are expected to engage in self-directed study. Lectures, seminars, and tutorials are led by Newcastle University academics or clinicians based in associated NHS Foundation Trusts.

In semester two, you will follow additional two 20-credit subject-focused and compulsory modules.

Alongside the subject-focussed modules, you will also be enrolled in a compulsory research skills module. This explores the basic principles of good practice in relation to experimental design, statistical analysis and ethics that underlie all aspects of research in the biosciences.

In semester three, you work full-time within a research group. This experience provides an excellent opportunity to work in a professional environment. The syllabus for the MSc in Medical Physics is designed to provide the knowledge, skills and experience required for a modern graduate medical physicist, placing more emphasis than many other courses on topics beyond ionising radiation (X-rays and radiotherapy).

Examples of other topics include magnetic resonance imaging and the use of lasers in medicine.

The University has an extensive range of PC and UNIX machines, full internet access and email. The University has invested in resources to allow students to develop their IT skills. Prizes

Hounsfield Prize

A prize of £200 is awarded annually for the best dissertation on the Medical Physics programme. Sir Hounsfield was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1979 for his work on Computed Tomography.

Mayneord Prize

A prize of £200 in memory of Professor Valentine Mayneord will be awarded to the student with the best overall performance on the Medical Physics course. Professor Mayneord was one of the pioneers of medical physics, who had a long association with the Department and encouraged the growth of teaching and research in the field.

Knoll Prize

A prize of £300 in memory of Professor Glenn Knoll is awarded annually to the student with outstanding performance in Radiation Physics and Radiation Measurement on any of the department's MSc programmes. Professor Knoll was a world-leading authority in radiation detection, with a long association with the department

IPEM Student Prize (MSc Medical Physics)

A prize of £250 is awarded annually to a student with outstanding performance in their dissertation.

Educational aims of the programme

The programme integrates the acquisition of core scientific knowledge with the development of key practical skills with a focus on professional career development within medical physics and related industries. The principle educational aims and outcomes of learning are to provide participants with advanced knowledge, practical skills and understanding applied to medical physics, radiation detection instrumentation, radiation and environmental practice in an industrial or medical context. This is achieved by the development of the participants’ understanding of the underlying science and technology and by the participants gaining an understanding of the legal basis, practical implementation and organisational basis of medical physics and radiation measurement.

Global opportunities

We give our students the opportunity to acquire international experience during their degrees by taking advantage of our exchange agreements with overseas universities and through our international research collaboration. Hence, it may be possible to carry out the dissertation project abroad.

INFLAMMATION takes you deep into the molecular mechanisms of chronic inflammatory diseases, the causal network between inflammatory processes and disease, genetics and environment. New research results for prevention, diagnosis and therapy will be presented and discussed. An internship in specialised clinics helps to see how “bed to bench side”, i.e. translational medicine, works.

Why do we suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity? Is our lifestyle making us sick? Why are certain genetic variants maintained in populations despite their disease risk? Evolutionary medicine focuses on bridging the gap between evolutionary biology and medicine by considering the evolutionary origins of common diseases to help find new biomedical approaches for preventing and treating them.

ONCOLOGY delves deep into molecular research on malignant diseases, the interplay of genetics and environment, cell biology of tumours, and many other aspects. You will achieve a better understanding of unresolved problems and opportunities of current research approaches.

LONGEVITY focuses on molecular mechanisms that seem to counteract the detrimental effect of ageing. The disease resilience and metabolic stability of extraordinarily fit people well over 90 years of age are of special interest. This research is complemented by experiments on model organisms. You will also look at the molecular pathways of ageing, and which role genes and the environment play. How the intricate web of counteracting effects triggering ageing and/or longevity works stands as the central focus of this area.

Scientists and clinicians will make you familiar with these topics in lectures and seminars. You will discuss different research approaches, perspectives and the latest developments in medical research. Lab practicals in state-of-the-art research labs, a lab project, and the experimental Master's thesis will provide ample opportunity to be involved in real-time research projects.

Electives

To widen your perspective, you choose one of three electives designed to complement the focus areas. The schedules are designed so that you can take part in more than one elective if places are available. Tracing Disease through Time looks at disease etiology by analysing biomolecules, diets and pathogens in archaeological specimens. You may opt for Epidemiology to immerse yourself in epidemiological approaches with special emphasis on cardiovascular diseases, one of the greatest health threats in modern societies. As this course aims to produce graduates equipped to pursue either clinically or technically-focused careers in imaging, it is important to provide an adequate knowledge base. For this reason, much of the teaching takes the form of lectures.

However, in most course units, this is supplemented by group discussions and practical exercises. Other than the introductory units, most course units provide you with an understanding of research methods by requiring submission of a critical review of appropriate research literature or clinical material, either as a report or presentation.

Where appropriate, practical imaging exercises are provided, requiring you to cooperate in acquiring images and analysing results.

All units require a considerable component of independent research and study.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment will occur in a variety of forms.

Summative assessment takes the form of written assignments, examinations, oral presentations and online quizzes. Written assignments and presentations, as well as contributing to summative assessment, have a formative role in providing feedback, particularly in the early stages of course units.

Online quizzes provide a useful method of regular testing, ensuring that you engage actively with the taught material. As accumulation of a knowledge base is a key aim of the course, examinations (both open-book and closed-book) form an important element of summative assessment.

In addition, formal assessment of your research and written communication skills is achieved via the dissertation. This is a 10,000 to 15,000-word report, written and organised to appropriate scientific standards, describing the design, execution and results of the research project.

About the course

The MSc Molecular Biology will give you hands on practical experience of both laboratory and bioinformatics techniques. You will also be trained in molecular biology research strategies. A strong practical foundation is provided in the first semester (Semester A) when you will study two modules:

About this degree

Students develop an understanding of the areas involved in synthetic biology, including engineering principles, mathematical modelling, advanced molecular biology, microbiology, biochemical engineering and necessary chemistry. There are opportunities to interact face-to-face, learn collaboratively and share good practices with clinicians who are mutually interested in medical education.

Teaching and learning

You will learn through a combination of study days, workplace-based assessments, research skills training and teaching practice.

Study day attendance is compulsory. However, periodically meeting fellow clinicians to discuss common educational issues can help you to develop your medical education skills. There are also a number of presentations from course tutors.

You will be required to attend one or two study days per course unit:

  • PGCert: 4 two-day sessions, plus a half-day introductory and half-day final session (total = 9 days in Year 1);
  • PGDip: 2 two-day sessions, 2 one-day sessions, plus a half-day introductory and half-day final session (total = 7 days in Year 2);
  • MSc: Attendance at Research Methods sessions and meetings with Supervisor.

Teaching staff

The course team are experienced in education, medicine and healthcare, and Manchester has a national and international reputation for high quality research in these fields. The course directors are Dr Don Bradley and Professor Leena Patel.

Coursework and assessment

PGCert

We assess you using two observations of teaching practice (for those participants not in the Manchester area, video recordings of teaching sessions, followed by a meeting with the assessor, are permitted) and four written assessments. Please note that it will be the responsibility of the student to arrange their own teaching.

PGDip

We assess you using four written assessments.

MSc

We assess you via the submission of your dissertation.

Some units have online provision, where some of the assessment will take place.

Facilities

The University of Manchester is one of the largest providers of medicine courses in the country. Four teaching hospitals, together with affiliated hospitals and community practices spread across the north-west, provide excellent facilities for clinical education.

You will also have access to extensive library and online services across the University.

Accrediting organisations

The PGCert is accredited through the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Students will therefore be eligible to apply for 'Fellow' (FHEA) status from the HEA.

The HEA is an independent organisation in the UK that supports higher education institutions with strategies for the development of research and evaluation, to improve the learning experience for students.

The PGCert is also accredited through the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME). This means that those completing the course will be eligible to apply for full membership of the AoME without going through the individual assessment process.

The PGCert is accredited by the AoME (Academy of Medical Educators).
