This postgraduate programme in mediation and conflict resolution, now in its fifth year, provides a thorough, practical and exciting introduction to this developing area.

Still the only course of its kind in the UK, the programme is rigorous and multi-disciplinary, exposing you to a wide range of approaches as well as being taught by experts from across the UK.

The skills of conflict resolution are crucial in contemporary life. Professionals in business, public bodies and the law are increasingly expected to act in a collaborative way and to resolve disputes without the delay and expense of litigation. Mediation is fast becoming a core skill.

In response to popular demand, from 2014/15 you can graduate with either an LLM or MSc. Students whose dissertations deal with significant legal or justice questions receive recognition via an LLM. Those who take a social science or empirical approach will graduate with an MSc. This division reflects the range of students taking the course, who include:
- lawyers
- human resource professionals
- recent graduates of all disciplines
- managers
- teachers
- social workers
- coaches, as well as experienced mediators seeking a more academic grounding for their work

The course combines theoretical and practical elements. It's recently been accredited by the Scottish Mediation Network.

You’ll study

The course can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis via a combination of evening and weekend classes, distance learning and personal study.

On a full-time basis, the LLM/MSc requires you to complete three modules in each of two semesters followed by a dissertation in a chosen research topic. Part-time students would normally undertake three modules per year.

As well as a rigorous theoretical grounding in the principles of mediation and conflict resolution, the course provides opportunities for you to acquire the skills of a mediator through simulations and case studies.

Mediation clinic

A unique aspect of studying for this qualification is that, as a student on the course, you can become a member of the Mediation Clinic. This is a student-led mediation service for the Greater Glasgow area.

The clinic exists to help people resolve disputes without going to court or tribunal. Since February 2014, it's been providing an in-court mediation service for small claims party litigants at Glasgow Sheriff Court. Each mediation is conducted by a lead mediator and student mediator.

Facilities

Our library has a wide range of law reports, legislation, serials and monographs. It also has duplicate sets of key law report series, houses extensive collections in government publications and other related areas.

You’ll have access to a wide range of electronic information sources which can be accessed from home, including all the major legal databases.

Course awards

Graduates at Certificate, Diploma or Masters level all fulfil the training requirements for the Scottish Mediation Register.

The Pre-Masters Programme is a preparation course for international students (non EU/UK) who do not meet the entry requirements for a Masters degree at the University of Strathclyde. The Pre-Masters programme provides progression to a number of degree options.

Many students take their qualification into their existing professions, for example law, human resources, construction, education, management, social work and trade unions. The programme offers two pathways: Occupational Psychology and Organisational Behaviour.

The MA/MFA Contemporary Curating explores the notion of exhibition practice in contemporary culture, and considers curatorial methods and strategies in the context of the gallery and museum, as well as in projects such as biennials, public art works and commissions. The programme is interdisciplinary in its structure and content and considers ways in which different kinds of art works and projects are mediated through the exhibition process. It shares the interests of the Research Councils’ strategic theme of Capitalising on the UK’s cultural assets.

The shifting relationship between artist-institution-curator-critic/writer forms a central element to the course, included in this will be a consideration of the implications of cultural theory to contemporary practice. The programme explores the potential of seeing curating as something which can be applied to different forms of knowledge, this could be through publication; symposia; conferences; events and interventions. In this way, the role of the curator could be seen as a mediator of art works; objects and information. In addition to the taught element, gallery visits and exhibition analysis will form an integral part of the programme.

Course Content

You will establish key theories and issues relating to Contemporary Curating, Design Cultures and Contemporary Visual Culture and then develop these into more complex approaches.

You will also be encouraged and supported to extend your experience in the professional sphere either through a practical project, research context, exchange, work experience, or other negotiated professional set of interactions with an external partner, groups of students and creative industry.

Towards the end of the programme you will undertake a major project to consolidate your past research and practice into fully realised collections, pieces, proposals, business plans, or exhibitions – whatever means is appropriate to the work. You will also have developed a strategy for the continuation of your practice located and contextualised to the profession or discipline.

If you choose to progress to MFA Contemporary Curating award you will study a further two units of 60 credits each.

This award is focused on the continuation of your practice aligned to the research and selection of appropriate public or professional venues and platforms to disseminate a significant body of work. You will be required to produce work for a public audience in the most relevant and appropriate form along with any implicit publicity and dissemination material.

You will take three core modules, two of which are taught and the third is research based. Theories and Practices of Global Communication covers the key underpinning knowledge and analytical tools for the programme as well as your abilities as a presenter of information. International Liaison focuses on your practical communication competences. In the research component you have the choice of an MA Thesis (the Dissertation module), conducting research into a topic of your choice, or a Professional Project where you apply your knowledge and expertise to creating a communication strategy. In both you are required to demonstrate research competence at Masters level. You then have the choice of four option modules to complete the MA.

For example, it is part of the civil justice system of England and Wales through the Civil Procedure Rules and the provisions in the rules which encourage the use of mediation. Additional government initiatives in England and Wales have been introduced such as automatic referral to mediators for small claims court matters.

In Europe, the EU Directive on Cross-Border Mediation has led to the implementation of mediation legislation throughout the EU. Beyond Europe, other developments continue: for example, Japan has introduced mediation in its financial services sector; Hong Kong is promoting mediation through new legislation protecting confidentiality of the process; the International Bar Association has drafted investor-state mediation rules; Nigeria continues to develop its multi-door courthouses through which mediation is a primary process.

The Postgraduate Distance Learning Diploma in International Dispute Resolution - Mediation has a strong focus on mediation and conciliation. The course will introduce you to the process of mediation and its role in the resolution of disputes. The diploma not only provides an understanding of the theoretical, practical and ethical problems relating to international mediation, but can also provide a stepping stone for professionals to become involved in international alternative dispute resolution (ADR).

The diploma is aimed not only at lawyers, but also at other professionals who may be involved in mediation - be it as a disputant, representative or perhaps as a mediator: a legal qualification will not be a prerequisite for admission, although you will be expected to appreciate that the course will involve an understanding of law and legal implications. References and materials will be legally orientated, but this will enable the non-lawyer to be better equipped to deal with the issues raised in international business mediation.

Programme structure

You can study the Postgraduate Distance Learning Diploma in International Dispute Resolution - Mediation, part-time for a period of 18 months, starting in January each year.

The year is divided into two seven-month terms, with a selection of optional modules and dissertation being offered during the second term.

British Intelligence History
This strand explores the history of intelligence in the 20th century through the medium of the British intelligence community, particularly, though not exclusively, the Secret Intelligence Service (popularly known as MI6). The pathway convenor is Professor Keith Jeffery who has recently completed the official history of SIS.

Religion, Identity and Conflict in History [new for 2012]
This strand explores the role played by religion in various forms and modes of historical conflict and identity, from the rise of Reformation to the global age, in Europe and the World. It looks at how religious convictions have intersected and interacted with the historical dynamic, how it fostered social, cultural, and political discord as well as acted as a mediator and a mitigator for peace.

British History
This strand focuses on British history from the mid-nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. It provides an introduction to the latest historiography being employed in political history, cultural and social history and examines domestic British history and the nation’s relationship with the wider world.

American History
This strand focuses on the history of the United States, and especially the American South, in the last two centuries.

Medieval and Early Modern History

A unique course that creates an opportunity to explore both the theoretical aspects and practical challenges of curating contemporary fashion and historical dress in a wide range of formats and locations.

Content

MA Fashion Curation is a unique opportunity to investigate the ways in which fashion and dress can be collected and displayed, and offers the opportunity to engage with theoretical discussions and debates that underpin this exciting and growing discipline. Fashion exhibitions are a key part of the national and international landscape of contemporary society, attracting some of the largest audiences to major museums. Fashion exhibitions have also become increasingly visible in department stores, galleries and the wider community. This shift represents the growing status of the curator as a central cultural mediator.

MA Fashion Curation will equip you with the skills to enter this fast paced and growing field. A key aspect of this course is the practical skills and experience gained in staging a live fashion-related exhibition. This group project presents students with an exciting collaborative opportunity to explore a range of approaches, mediums and practices that constitute the roles required in realising a curatorial project.

The changing possibilities of curating and the curator are introduced and examined through seminars, workshops, and lectures, given by LCF researchers and lecturers and key industry professionals. Students are encouraged to undertake internships whilst on the course and past placements have been at Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of London, Kerry Taylor Auctions, Alexander McQueen Archives, Rambert Dance Company Archives, Museum of the City of New York and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Taught by a team of internationally renowned curators, including Professor Amy de la Haye and Professor Judith Clark, this course makes full use of fashion-related collections and archives both within and outside London to explore the issues and concerns that consume today's fashion curators. Areas that are explored with the MA include: displaying dress; creating 'stories' from objects; writing texts to target audiences; model-making; collecting, handling and archiving garments.

The Postgraduate Diploma in International Dispute Resolution – Mediation not only provides an understanding of the theoretical, practical and ethical problems relating to international mediation, but can also provide a stepping stone for professionals to become involved in international alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes.

You will be taught by the School of International Arbitration, a centre for research and teaching in International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution at Queen Mary.

Mediation is developing at great speed in many countries. For example, it is part of the civil justice system of England and Wales through the Civil Procedure Rules and the provisions in the rules which encourage the use of mediation.

This diploma is aimed not only at lawyers, but also at other professionals who may be involved in mediation - be it as a disputant, representative or perhaps as a mediator. The course will introduce you to the process of mediation and its role in the resolution of disputes.

The core module, Alternative dispute resolution, interprets the subject as a truly interdisciplinary field comprising of law, social science, economics, psychology and others. This is a newly emerged and vibrant area of scholarship, hence it is impossible to give yes or no answers to most of the questions. Accordingly, the module will employ critical thinking and an open discussion approach. It is expected that you will be willing to share results of your research and be involved in active discussion of all issues.

There are two distinct International Dispute Resolution diploma routes to choose from, Arbitration or Mediation.

If you choose to specialise in Mediation this programme will:
