This postgraduate programme in mediation and conflict resolution, now in its fifth year, provides a thorough, practical and exciting introduction to this developing area.

Still the only course of its kind in the UK, the programme is rigorous and multi-disciplinary, exposing you to a wide range of approaches as well as being taught by experts from across the UK.

The skills of conflict resolution are crucial in contemporary life. Professionals in business, public bodies and the law are increasingly expected to act in a collaborative way and to resolve disputes without the delay and expense of litigation. Mediation is fast becoming a core skill.

In response to popular demand, from 2014/15 you can graduate with either an LLM or MSc. Students whose dissertations deal with significant legal or justice questions receive recognition via an LLM. Those who take a social science or empirical approach will graduate with an MSc. This division reflects the range of students taking the course, who include:

You’ll study

The course can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis via a combination of evening and weekend classes, distance learning and personal study.

On a full-time basis, the LLM/MSc requires you to complete three modules in each of two semesters followed by a dissertation in a chosen research topic. Part-time students would normally undertake three modules per year.

As well as a rigorous theoretical grounding in the principles of mediation and conflict resolution, the course provides opportunities for you to acquire the skills of a mediator through simulations and case studies.

Mediation clinic

A unique aspect of studying for this qualification is that, as a student on the course, you can become a member of the Mediation Clinic. This is a student-led mediation service for the Greater Glasgow area.

The clinic exists to help people resolve disputes without going to court or tribunal. Since February 2014, it's been providing an in-court mediation service for small claims party litigants at Glasgow Sheriff Court. Each mediation is conducted by a lead mediator and student mediator.

Facilities

Our library has a wide range of law reports, legislation, serials and monographs. It also has duplicate sets of key law report series, houses extensive collections in government publications and other related areas.

You’ll have access to a wide range of electronic information sources which can be accessed from home, including all the major legal databases.

Course awards

Graduates at Certificate, Diploma or Masters level all fulfil the training requirements for the Scottish Mediation Register.

Many students take their qualification into their existing professions, for example law, human resources, construction, education, management, social work and trade unions. A number of large law firms now have dispute resolution departments. Legal practitioners find the qualification a useful addition to their CV. HR managers who have taken the course report regular use of their mediation skills. Managers and social workers say they use them daily.

Former students are now working in community, homelessness and family mediation. Others have integrated mediation into their business offering.

The course is based on the theoretical foundations of mediation and includes analysis of conflict theory, negotiation theory and approaches to conflict intervention and marries this with intensive practice skills development throughout the year. It explores multiple fields for the application and practice of mediation and conflict intervention in society today including Families, Workplace Mediation, Commercial Mediation, Restorative Justice, Conflict Resolution in Education, Peacemaking, Community Mediation and Multiparty Policy Disputes. The programme prepares students for professional certification in mediation with the Mediator’s Institute of Ireland.

The course is structured around theoretical presentations and skills development through exercises and role-play and the introduction to specialised areas of mediation practice as mentioned above.

Accreditation

The Diploma is aimed at those who wish to develop mediation skills for application in their area of work or for developing a career in mediation. The MA in Mediation and Conflict Intervention at Edward Kennedy Institute, Maynooth University provides a learning experience for those who wish to deepen and integrate their mediation and conflict intervention knowledge and skills. The programme delivers specialist professional training in the areas of Organisational and Workplace Mediation, Family Mediation, Commercial Mediation, Restorative Practice and Peace Process Studies, providing the professional knowledge and skills necessary for practice in these areas. Students complete nine modules of 10 credits each over a two-year duration.

This highly experiential programme provides ongoing opportunities to learn reflectively through exercises and in practice through feedback and coaching while formal presentations provide background theory in the specialist areas. Students gain a strong theoretical foundation coupled with skills and practice development leading to a solid grounding in the best practice of constructive conflict intervention processes.

The MA in Mediation and Conflict Intervention is designed for those people who are intently interested in furthering their skills base and knowledge in the field of mediation and conflict intervention. Participants will usually have been working directly or indirectly with people in conflict as a professional or as someone required to handle conflict situations in their work or personal lives. Participating in this programme will further develop theoretical knowledge and applied skills in conflict analysis, mediation and other specialist chosen areas of study. The programme is designed to be an intense learning experience where small class sizes encourage strong skills development and engagement in a continuous and collaborative learning environment.

The course is accredited by the Mediators Institute of Ireland (MII) and students who are not already certified mediators with the MII must undergo and pass the first module (MC615) via assignment and competency assessment. This will enable students to register with the MII as a certified Mediator with eligibility to practice. Completion of the Masters programme will provide further requirements for Practitioner Accreditation. This senior status is achieved when the student has successfully completed the course and also has completed cases to MII standard (see Mediators Institute of Ireland website: http://www.themii.ie).

Course Structure

Two Year Part Time Programme

Each year has a different schedule with some modules repeated each year.

In the academic year of 2017-2018 the first semester delivers the following modules. Research (MC603), Mediation Knowledge and Practice (MC615), Family Mediation (MC604), Mediation Theory into Practice (MC628), Values and Relationship in Mediation and Conflict Intervention (MC601) and Restorative Practices (MC608). The second semester modules are Commercial Mediation (MC607), Workplace Mediation (MC605), Peace Studies 1 - Resolving Protracted Conflict (MC629) and Peace Studies 2 -Post Conflict Challenges in Implementing Peace Agreements (MC630).

Year two modules include Mediation Knowledge and Practice (MC615), Family Mediation (MC604), Mediation Theory and Conflict Analysis (MC601), Organisational and Workplace Mediation (MC605), Conflict Resolution in Education (MC611) and Restorative Practice in Schools (MC616).

Schedule

The course is structured in modules of 6 days each. Each 6 day module in turn is (usually) broken down into two 3 day blocks (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). The Restorative Practices Module (MC608) is structured in three blocks of two days, Thursdays and Fridays. The majority of modules are delivered on campus, however some course days are delivered off campus ( MC608, MC629 and MC630), in the North of Ireland or Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation, Enniskerry. Students take the internship module Mediation Theory into Practice (MC628) off campus.

Students must complete one compulsory module MC601 or MC606 each year, whichever is being delivered in the year. Students without appropriate accreditation as a mediator must complete and pass MC615, the first module on offer each year. Students complete nine modules in total over two academic years.
While every attempt will be made to keep to dates advertised it is important to note that all dates are provisional and will be confirmed upon commencement of the programme.

Career Options

Graduates are provided with the knowledge base for practice in the specialist areas of mediation and many other conflict intervention systems taught on the course. Graduates who have completed module MC615 and passed the competency assessment may apply to register with the Mediators Institute of Ireland (MII) and advertise their practice as a certified mediator. On completion of supervised cases, graduates may apply for assessment to the advanced level of Practitioner Member with the MII. Graduates may incorporate their learning into their current employment or the development of their future career. Others may choose self-employment offering a variety of services including mediation, conflict analysis, conflict management, facilitation and other conflict interventions to prospective clients. Some agencies, providing a mediation service, employ mediators, which provides another option.

The focus of governments and humanitarian NGOs has progressively shifted towards conflict prevention and building sustainable peace. Yet to prevent conflict or to build a secure and inclusive state and society after conflict involves a complex set of skills straddling conflict analysis, conflict mediation and negotiation, peace processes, state stabilisation, post-conflict reconstruction, peace building and early warning.

This inter-disciplinary, custom-designed MSc offers the opportunity to develop operational and vocational skills for conflict prevention and peacebuilding within the context of the latest theories on conflict and conflict prevention. Students will acquire the analytical skills to map conflict dynamics, design conflict sensitive projects and develop early warning mechanisms, enabling them to better predict, and so avoid, the outbreak of violent conflicts. They will also gain the skills necessary to assess and evaluate the impact and outcomes of interventions.

The MSc is designed for practitioners looking to enhance their existing skills, as well as graduates with a career in conflict prevention, conflict mediation, or post-conflict reconstruction in mind. It is particularly aimed at those seeking to work or already working in the (I)NGO sector, governmental departments or inter-governmental organisations.

While rooted in peace and conflict studies, the MSc draws on strategic and security studies as well as development studies, enabling much needed cross-fertilisation between these traditionally divergent perspectives. It draws on real-life case studies as well as interactive role plays, and exposes students to both cutting-edge academic developments and the latest practitioner experience, with a particular focus on bottom-up approaches.

Courses are taught by a mixture of academics and practitioners, and cover both critical and problem-solving approaches. Conflict dynamics are analysed drawing on multiple disciplines, including security studies, peace studies, anthropology, law, archaeology, history and political theory. Modules include both traditional, term-long modules and short, usually more skills-oriented continuing professional development courses as well as fieldtrips (e.g. fieldtrips have been organised to Nepal, Kenya, Lebanon, Sri Lanka and Kosovo).

Course Structure

The MSc will provide students with advanced knowledge of the complex and specialised areas of peacebuilding, among it conflict analysis, conflict prevention, conflict resolution and conflict transformation, community driven reconstruction, peace processes within the context of contemporary conflicts and in the context of broader international (humanitarian) interventions. Integrated into the MSc structure are opportunities to develop operational and vocational skills for example in negotiations, conflict mediation, conflict sensitive programme design and programme management, or urban peacebuilding. Students are provided with theoretical and empirical knowledge and with practical skills that are helpful for current and future employment opportunities. The courses are thus attractive to both graduates and mid-career practitioners. Whilst the academic and applied focus of the MSc comes through a peace and conflict studies analytic lens, course material will also draw from traditional strategic/security and development studies, enabling cross fertilisation between different perspectives. It allows the exploration of unique and new paradigms and practices in the fields of conflict, peace, security, defence, diplomacy, development and humanitarian intervention.

Learning and Teaching

At the beginning of the academic year, as well as the general induction programme offered by the School and the university, Durham Global Security Institute (DGSi) students are invited to a programme specific induction. This induction provides an overview of the programme an opportunity to meet members of the team and an opportunity to discuss optional module choices.

The 180 credits one-year MSc degree programme is divided into five core and three optional modules of 15 credits each. Students also have to submit a dissertation (60 credits) of not more than15,000 words. Practitioners have the option of writing an in-depth policy document as their dissertation.

Most of the modules are delivered during the first two terms and students spend the remaining time to write the dissertation. Assessment methods include: an examination, essays, presentations, reflective journal, reports, article reviews and policy briefs.

Although all modules have 18/19 contact hours, the core modules are spread over 9/10 weeks and 132 hours of self-directed learning. The modules are mainly delivered through weekly 2-hour sessions which take the form of a one hour lecture and a one hour tutorial. The form in which seminars are conducted can differ from one module to another. Typically modules would have elements of lectures, discussions, and presentations from students—the extent of each of these components would differ from one module to another. The optional modules of the programme are either delivered over two full days, through a mixture of lectures, Q&A sessions, seminar discussions, and role plays or over a single term in 2-hour seminar sessions. There is also the opportunity to participate in a study visit which provides an opportunity to investigate issues ‘in the field’ concerned with conflict prevention, conflict resolution, state and peace-building. Of particular interest is the theory-practice linkage

Students can also meet their module coordinators or programme coordinator during their weekly contact hours or by making an appointment. When students are working on their dissertations during the latter half of the year, they are required to attend two 4-hour workshops. In addition, they have the opportunity to meet their assigned supervisors for an average of 6 meetings. Students also have access to the MSc Programme Director and the School’s Director of Taught Post Graduate Studies whenever there is a need.

The School hosts events throughout the year which all postgraduate students are invited to attend. Students are also fully integrated into the Durham Global Security Institute which also hosts guest lectures and seminars throughout the year. These events provide students with the opportunity to engage with, and debate, the most important issues in current political and international studies, and in conflict, peace and security studies.

The second term includes a residential Spring School in Dublin. For the remainder of the programme, including the summer dissertation period, April-September students may be based in either Belfast or Dublin depending on their research interests. A one term (twelve week) programme is available and is ideal for those on sabbatical, or for those who prefer a shorter period of study.
Course Description:
This innovative cross-border programme allows M.Phil. students to take a broader joint course Master in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation, or a specialist option for either a Master in Conflict Resolution or a Master in Reconciliation Studies. The Conflict Resolution specialism develops skills in conflict analysis and conflict intervention for both established practitioners and those seeking to develop new expertise in conflict management, conflict resolution and conflict transformation. The Reconciliation specialism offers an inter-disciplinary approach to the challenges of social reconciliation in the aftermath of political conflict, drawing on social research, politics, theology and ethics. Particular attention is given to ethnic conflicts, and the role of religion in such conflicts and in peacebuilding and reconciliation. Case studies typically include: Northern Ireland; South Africa; Zimbabwe; Rwanda; El Salvador; Guatemala; Israel/Palestine; and Sri Lanka. The programme equips graduates for work with local and international organisations, and provides transferable skills for a wide variety of careers, including mediation, diplomacy, policy, advocacy, journalism, teaching and Ph.D. research.

Students are required to take a 10 ECTS core module in Research Skills, a further 50 ECTS of taught modules, and a 30 ECTS research dissertation. In the Conflict Resolution specialism, students are required to take the core module, Conflict Analysis and Models of Intervention. In the Reconciliation specialism, students are required to take the core module, Dynamics of Reconciliation. Optional modules worth 10 ECTS include: Conflict Resolution Skills, Conflict Transformation, Conflict Resolution Lessons from Comparative Peace Processes, Social Research for Transformation, Reconciliation in Northern Ireland, Theology of Reconciliation, Community Learning and Reflective Practice in Northern Ireland, and Post-Conflict Justice and Truth Commissions. Optional modules worth 5 ECTS include: Guided Research Project and South Africa: The Ethics of Truth and Reconciliation. Modules are generally assessed on written work of 3,000-5,000 words, to be submitted according to the internal deadlines distributed at the beginning of each academic year, with final submission date by 1 May. Subject to satisfactory performance in the written work, students may proceed to the submission of the dissertation. The Conflict and Dispute Resolution Studies course is designed to encourage an understanding of the nature and causes of conflict in political, ethnic, community, civil and related environments, and provides an overview of prevailing systems of remedy and redress and dispute resolution. The course examines the causes of conflict in corporate, statutory, voluntary, political, and community-based settings and provides training in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes such as adjudication, facilitation, ombudsmanship and mediation, and addresses internationally significant commissions and tribunals on post-conflict justice. This one-year course interests those who wish to study non-adversarial dispute resolution processes. It is of particular interest to those, in both the public and private sectors, who wish to study civil mediation and other non-adversarial dispute and conflict resolution processes which are increasingly a part of legislative and management structures in the EU and internationally. It aims at achieving standards of best practice for those who recognise the value of alternative dispute resolution processes in resolving commercial, community, workplace and other pre-litigation disputes and in minimising damage caused by conflict. Through an alliance with Mediation Forum-Ireland those who complete the CDRS course will have the opportunity to have their names included in the relevant specialist panel of Accredited Mediators. The assessment is based on two essays of approximately 4,000 – 4,500 words each, a 4,000 – 4,500 reflective log, and on a practical skills-based assessment to be completed by 1 August. One essay will focus on the underlying theory and philosophy of conflict, the other essay will focus on the theories and processes of conflict resolution. To complete the Diploma satisfactorily a pass mark of 40% must be achieved in the two essays and the log and practical assessment must be undertaken to a satisfactory standard.

The M.S. in Conflict Analysis & Resolution is designed to train reflective professionals in the practice, design, and evaluation of a variety of conflict resolution applications. The M.S. program focuses on pragmatic approaches to solving problems inherent in human social relations. Students are exposed to a wide array of techniques and strategies to help people achieve nonviolent, non-litigious solutions for conflicts that arise in many personal, professional, organizational, and social environments. The M.S. program consists of a 12-course (36 credits) sequence that includes conflict resolution theory, practice skills, field placement, research design, and program evaluation.

Transferring Credits

Graduates of our Master's program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution who decide to continue their studies and are accepted into our Ph.D. program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, can transfer up to 15 credit hours to the Ph.D. program, thereby reducing the total number of credits for the doctoral program.

Program Formats

The M.S. program is offered in both residential and distance learning formats. These flexible formats allow mid-career working adults and those unable to attend the on-campus program, to study conflict resolution in a creative, rigorous, and structured fashion.

Students may enroll full or part time, taking six to nine credit hours per trimester. Students who attend full-time can expect to complete the program in 15 months. Part-time students will complete the program in 2 years. Summer attendance is mandatory.

Students taking online classes are required to attend 2 Residential Institutes (RI) per academic year. Each RI is 5 days. Currently the RIs are held in February and October. Please visit the Residential Institute for current information.

Master's students are provided NSU computer accounts including email and Blackboard, but must obtain their own Internet service providers, use their own computer systems and have a usable web camera. Online students use the web to access course materials, announcements, email, distance library services, subscription library databases, and other information, and for interaction with faculty and fellow students. Online, interactive learning methods are based on the use of Blackboard as a course management system. Online activities facilitate frequent student-to-faculty and student-to-student interaction. They are supported by threaded discussion boards, white boards, chat rooms, email, and multimedia presentations. In addition, Blackboard enables students to submit assignments online in multimedia formats and to receive their professors' reviews of assignments online in the same formats.

Curriculum

Masters students must complete a minimum of 36-credits; successfully pass a field practicum and a Comprehensive Examination or an optional thesis to be eligible for the degree. Students must also maintain a 3.0 GPA through completion of the degree. Some courses have specific prerequisite requirements that students must meet; these should be checked to ensure compliance. If a student chooses to they may opt to do the master's thesis.

Practicum

Practicum is a student centered learning experience that is supervised by professionals at a variety of local, regional, national, and international organizations, as well as monitored by the practicum coordinator and guided by faculty teaching the practicum sequence. Practicum I and II are offered both residentially and online, during the fall, winter and summer terms. Doctoral students do have the option of doing Teaching and Training which is offered in the fall, followed by a Teaching and Training practicum in the winter term. Students may follow either of these tracks.

Practicum provides opportunities that you must be active in creating. It provides the chance to explore employment settings and obtain a realistic feel for your level of expertise in conflict analysis and resolution. Practicum also offers you a preview of locations where conflict resolution is currently being used or where it can be introduced. Workplace research indicates that managers and supervisors spend as much as forty percent of the workday resolving nonproductive conflict issues. Conflict that is poorly managed results in burdening costs for both the individual and the organization. Expanding worldwide development, the global economy, and population growth and associated social issues drive the intermingling of cultures and practices that increase the incidence of workplace conflict and destructive disagreement. Interest in and demand for conflict management has consequently risen.

The Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management, Negotiation, and Mediation provides students with the tools to manage, resolve, negotiate, and mediate conflict and to develop intrapersonal and interpersonal skills for living and earning. Conflict management training actively engages the student in self-exploration regarding issues of perception, bigotry, bias, values, beliefs, differences, and culture. The knowledge and skills acquired during this two-fold program can be applied to a vast array of fields in government, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs): human rights, diplomacy, international law, humanitarian relief, environmental policymaking, sustainable development, and conflict management, among others. They are also highly transferrable to international business and other professional areas involving interaction at the international level.

Description of the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy

The curriculum of the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy teaches the cornerstone theories that explain interactions between countries, and also examines current world affairs through the various lenses of international relations: political, diplomatic, economic, environmental, cultural, and social. A range of area electives supplements this global approach allowing each student to gear the program towards his or her field of interest and professional goals.

Courses take place at AGS in Paris. They are taught in English and follow the American system of higher education while taking advantage of the school’s location in France, with guest speakers and visits to embassies, international organizations headquartered in Paris and European Union institutions. No knowledge of French language is necessary to attend. Small seminar-style classrooms allow for close dialogue with professors and offer a forum for debate. The students and faculty in the program come from diverse national backgrounds, each adding a different perspective to the subjects taught.

Description of the M.A. in International Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) -

The International Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) degree offers an innovative curriculum giving students a sophisticated understanding of today’s international issues by bridging the various sub-disciplines of this emerging field: human rights, international law and organizations, mediation and conflict transformation, public health issues, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

The coursework provides strong theoretical and analytical foundations and is complemented with hands-on experiences, including travels to key sites of the history of international conflict, and an internship allowing students to gain professional practice while developing a network of useful contacts.

Courses take place at Arcadia University in the United States, in Glenside, in the greater Philadelphia area (Pennsylvania). The faculty and staff at the International Peace and Conflict Resolution Department are committed to addressing the individual needs of each student, and work closely with them to make every component of the program fit their interests and career goals.

Graduation Requirements

In order to complete the dual degree program and graduate with the M.A. in International Peace and Conflict Resolution and the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy, students are required to successfully complete 65-68 graduate credit-hours. Degree requirements include a Capstone Seminar at Arcadia University, as well as the completion and defense of a 25,000- to 35,000-word Master’s thesis at The American Graduate School in Paris.

According to statistics from the Institute of Family Policies, conflict in broken families is progressively increasing, as is the number of divorces.

The lack of professionals specialised in this area who can help to resolve conflicts in crisis situations of all kinds and who can also mediate in irreversible situations of family breakdown is notorious. However it is necessary to carry out positive mediation in an attempt to prevent any type of conflict and to create tools for communication and to help resolve future conflict.

We have lecturers and professors with both teaching and research experience, and some staff members from the professional field of mediation.

Specialisations

The MA in International Conflict and Security allows students to choose secondary areas of specialisation from the range of programmes offered at BSIS. This leads to the award of an MA degree in, for example, 'International Conflict and Security with International Migration'.

Standard and extended versions

The LLM is offered in both a standard version (90 ECTS credits) and an extended version (120 ECTS credits) and in each case students may take the programme with or without a secondary specialisation. Those on the extended version will take more modules to gain extra credit.

Programme aims

The programme aims to:

- provide a programme that will attract, and meet the needs of both those seeking to prepare for careers in fields concerned with international conflicts and those with a general intellectual interest in contemporary security issues

- provide you with a research-active teaching environment which gives you a good grounding in the study of study of international conflict and war, co-operation, security and peace

- examine how state, non-state and supra-national actors behave and interact in conflict situations

- ensure that you acquire a solid knowledge of the theories of the causes and dynamics of different kinds of contemporary conflict and security threats and the means to manage them

- ensure that students who specialise in regional conflicts acquire an advanced understanding of the historical, cultural, social and institutional context of the area to be studied

- prepare students for various careers in jobs related to international conflict analysis security issues, as well as for career changes in the spirit of lifelong learning

- develop your general research skills and personal skills (transferable skills) in particular through a substantial dissertation.

Research areas

Our research interests span a broad spectrum of the discipline, with particular strengths in the fields of conflict analysis and resolution, political theory and European politics. The strength of the School’s research culture is reflected in the numerous books and articles published and in the existence of its three core research groups: Conflict, Security and Human Rights; Comparative Politics; and Political and Social Thought. We also host four University-recognised research centres: the Conflict Analysis Research Centre (CARC), the Global Europe Centre (GEC), the Centre for Critical Thought (CCT), and the Centre for Federal Studies (CFS).

Careers

The School of Politics and International Relations has a dedicated Employability, Placements and Internships Officer who works with students to develop work-based placements in a range of organisations. Centrally, the Careers and Employability Service can help you plan for your future by providing one-to-one advice at any stage of your postgraduate studies.

Many students at our Brussels centre who undertake internships are offered contracts in Brussels immediately after graduation. Others have joined their home country’s diplomatic service, entered international organisations, or have chosen to undertake a ‘stage’ at the European Commission, or another EU institution.

Our graduates have gone on to careers in academia, local and national government and public relations.

Kent has an excellent record for postgraduate employment: over 94% of our postgraduate students who graduated in 2013 found a job or further study opportunity within six months.
