Structures of Broadcasting

In this module you will develop an understanding of public service and commercial models of broadcasting. You will also explore the structure of the global programme sales and co-production markets.

Production Study 1

In this module you will develop an understanding of the key challenges of producing a long running, high-volume, British television drama series. You will look at the role of such series in the television landscape, and examine the organisation, management, funding, budgeting and scheduling of drama productions. You will explore audience profiles and see how these fit within the economic and cultural priorities of television. You will also have the opportunity to meet writers and directors from a drama series.

Digital Media Marketing - Mobile, Social Media and Strategy

In this module you will develop an understanding of the way in which marketing has evolved and continues to evolve as a result of the rise and dominance of digital and social media. You will consider the influence digital media, the web, mobile and social technologies have had on marketing, and the impact they will likely continue to have on the way marketing practice develops in the future. You will examine the theoretical and historical context of digital and social media marketing, particularly how they relate to the film and television industries, and critically assess a range of campaigns and multiplatform marketing strategies.

Media Industries Report

In this module you will develop an understanding of the contemporary issues facing media managers and the creative industries more generally. You will look at a variety of methological approaches to the study of the creative industries, considering their relative strengths and weaknesses. You will analyse industry report data, presenting your findings in written and relevant visual forms. You will be assigned a supervisor who will provide support and guidance on how to carry out primary research and preapre your report to common industry standards.

Teaching & assessment

Teaching and learning is mostly by means of lectures, seminar discussions, master classes, oral presentations, critical writing, guided independent research, problem solving exercises, guided independent study, coursework essays, practical equipment exercises, and a dissertation or media research project.

The basic strategies are to develop a wide-array of project management tools, techniques and analytical understandings, complemented by specific approaches and necessary skills in media management. This exposes students to an understanding of managing and financing film and television projects alongside developing a key set of abilities in the role marketing plays in media management. Students are given an understanding of UK media, particularly television, in relationship to a variety of different geographical and cultural contexts, in order to successfully apply those project management skills in global creative industries. Students’ interest and enthusiasm for the field is nurtured to develop their critical and communication skills, and their critical, research and project management skills.

Assessment of knowledge and understanding is undertaken through seminar presentations, writing exercises, and coursework essays. For the final course, Media Industries Report, each student will be responsible for their own report. The course is delivered with a mixture of lectures and seminars. Many of the assessments will be based on real world cases and therefore specialist guest speakers and visits to businesses will also form part of the learning journey. At Master's level, self-management and independent research and study is expected with students being directed and encouraged to deepen their understanding of particular areas of Marketing. Moodle is used as an interactive VLE but the development of a learning community is particularly prevalent at Cardiff Metropolitan with excellent student support.

Assessment

MA Digital Marketing includes two teaching periods and is followed by 2-3 months of independent study during which time you complete a practical project.

Teaching Period 1

Digital Marketing Strategy: The unit focuses on examining the strategies and methods used to design and manage digital media based marketing campaigns. Teaching Period 2

Digital Communication and Media Development: You will review the digital media development process, assess the potential of a range of applications and use software and multimedia-authoring tools to develop a digital marketing campaign.

Digital Media Marketing Development Project: The project enables you to demonstrate and showcase what you have learnt during the taught programme.

The project consists of:
Systems specification for a digital marketing campaign
Functional model/prototype developed from the above, using appropriate software tools

The course covers the main marketing communication techniques. It provides you with a sufficient foundation in marketing to enable you to work easily with people involved throughout the marketing management process. The ultimate aim of the course is to enhance individual career advancement prospects through knowledge of how to apply academic learning to best marketing communications practice.

A highlight for many students is the residential at a Cambridge college and talks from practitioners and alumni organised throughout the course which provide an opportunity for networking and extending learning in new environments. 

Course structure

The following modules are indicative of what you will study on this course. 

Year long module

In semester one you will study the underpinning concepts and strategies for marketing communications.

Semester one modules

In semester two you will study in greater depth the tools and media platforms for marketing communications. The January cohort will begin these modules during the summer school.

Internships

All students on our full-time Business Masters courses can apply to undertake the PG/MBA Internship Programme, which forms part of the Reflective Practitioner Module.

The internship allows you to test drive a career and explore one of your career interests before you complete your Postgraduate studies!

Completing an 8-12 week accredited internship helps students gain invaluable work experience. This fantastic work experience can be taken in addition to option modules. Students are responsible for finding their own internship with the support of the Business Experience Team.

To express an interest in the module, students must submit a completed application form and a copy of their updated CV. This will give students membership a dedicated website that offers exclusive access to internship vacancies, one to-one CV guidance appointments, mock interviews, employability workshops and much more.

Students can apply to London-based organisations and have the flexibility to take their internship in the summer period or alongside their studies.

TEACHING

The course is currently delivered in four blocks of three-day intensive study periods, followed by independent study and online support through the University’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard. Each module is taken and assessed over a six week block. 

From September 2017, this delivery format will change. Students will continue to study a single module for a 6 week period. Face to face teaching will be delivered on campus for two half days each week. In addition, you will attend the taught element of the Business Innovation Programme each Wednesday afternoon during the 6 week blocks, with independent study completed in your own time through Blackboard.  Individual student timetables will be provided during induction week.

ASSESSMENT

Over the duration of your course a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include; essays, assignments, exams, multiple choice tests, online tests, group reports, and portfolio work. The weighting between exams and coursework varies between modules and years.

You will gain a highly regarded formal qualification, as well as personal and organisational management skills that will enhance your career prospects.
