The MA in Digital Media is unique in its combination of practical and theoretical approaches to contemporary media and technology.
The established and exciting degree is designed to help you understand digital transformations in media, culture and society and apply this understanding in practice, in the media and creative industries and in further research. You will be equipped with skills that can be applied to current and future developments in digital media, social media, computing and other aspects of technology.
The MA in Digital Media educates aspiring media practitioners and academics as well as early and mid-career professionals who seek to reflect on their roles in a structured and stimulating learning environment designed to give all students up-to-the-minute knowledge of digital media and the skills to apply that knowledge to future developments.
The MA offers two pathways:

Pathway 2 is a theory and practice programme where you can explore transformations in media, culture and society through the practice of contemporary digital communication. The MA in Digital Media regularly attracts offers of work placements and internships. In the past these have come from Google, The Science Museum and N1creative.com. Our students have access to state-of-the-art facilities including well-equipped lecture and seminar rooms, exhibition spaces, computer facilities and digital media suites.
The department is also currently host to the renowned philosopher of media and technology, Bernard Stiegler and students will have access to his modulein Media Philosophy as well as priority access to the innovative and popular option After New Media. Designed to complement the MA in Digital Media, this course provides a framework for thinking about the current media environment as well as future forms of human and computer interaction.

MA Digital Media students have access to the pioneering option ‘After New Media’, currently a non-assessed online module which explores the themes of self mediation, ethical mediation and intelligent mediation, and develops a framework for thinking about 'life' after new media. As well as accessing a series of podcasts, students are offered reading groups and a masterclass with Professor Sarah Kember co-author of the book Life After New Media on which the course is based.

This Interactive Journalism MA has a particular emphasis on digital media, and prepares you to enter and/or further develop a career in online journalism in particular. It has a strong reputation for preparing students for both specialist jobs, such as data journalism, social media and audience development, as well as broader roles in digital journalism. Teaching from current journalists ensures up-to-date skills and relevant industry contacts.
The curriculum reflects the continuing development of digital journalism through interactive content and formats that engage users as active participants.
Innovative modules focus on social media and audience development, data journalism and coding for journalists. Video and audio work are also geared to online publication.

In 2014 we completed a £12m development project for our journalism facilities. These facilities were developed in consultation with experts from the BBC and ITN, and include two digital newsrooms - impressive modern facilities that enable you to learn the skills required to produce newspapers, magazines and websites.
We actively encourage all our journalism student to gain journalism experience during their studies with us. Professional experience is an important step in developing a career in journalism and it helps students by put their learning into practice and make contacts in the industry.
Work experiences are not formally assessed or arranged as part of the MA Programme but your personal tutor may be able to advise you in suitable organisations to approach that may suit your chosen career path.
Some modules are taught in lecture theatres, such as Ethics, Rules and Standards and UK Media Law, but some involve small-group workshops that allow you to develop your journalistic skills and knowledge with the support of our expert academics.
Our students have the option of taking part in a Teeline shorthand course alongside their studies. This costs £100 (refundable if you reach 100 words per minute) and runs across two terms.
All MA Journalism courses at City are practical, hands-on courses designed for aspiring journalists. As a result, much of your coursework will be journalistic assignments that you produce to deadline, as you would in a real news organisation. Assessment is often through a portfolio of journalistic assignments of this kind.

Right now the roles within public relations, advertising and marketing are converging. So this MA isn’t about studying ads – it’s about becoming a professional who can understand the dynamics of power that exist between these professions, and critically intervene in today’s media landscape.
At its core this masters looks at how we can better serve society by improving communications across these disciplines, and how we can develop as professionals who can adapt within a challenging media world. We want you to understand the power struggles that exist between these three professions so we look at public relations, advertising and marketing as inter-related disciplines, drawing on theoretical and professional debates around issues such as globalisation and homogenised consumption. We also discuss current industry expectations looking at the crossovers that exist between creativity, management and strategy.
We’ll tackle some of the big things that are changing when it comes to the way the world works - aspects such as globalisation, the control of knowledge, digital technologies, and the way content is created. You’ll also get an introduction to media and cultural theory, which lies at the intersection between the promotional professions, media and society.
This is a theory-based programme, but it also offers vocational elements, so you can take practice-based options in subjects ranging from online journalism and social media campaigning, to design methods and media law and ethics. You'll also get the latest insights from industry professionals across a range of sectors through our visiting speaker series in the Spring.
We take fields such as sociology, anthropology media and cultural studies to understand how public relations, advertising and marketing get together, where they overlap and where the tensions lie. This means we might take an anthropological perspective on how the promotional professions work together to develop a product – not just in terms of its messaging – but in terms of how it was conceived and came to market in the first place.
It’s important to mention that this isn’t a business studies-style MA; it’s a rigorous, academic programme investigating promotional workers and their use of media in today’s campaigns and debates.
Throughout the core components of the degree, you'll examine the very wide range of ways in which public relations, advertising and marketing is represented in society, together with the skills and techniques enacted by practitioners in their day-to-day roles. The MA is assessed primarily through coursework essays and written projects. Practical modules may require audiovisual elements to be submitted. It will also include a dissertation of approximately 12,000 words.

This course provides industry-relevant and specialist journalism training. Based in one of our multimedia newsrooms, designed to give you the experience of working in a fully functioning and fast-paced environment, you’ll learn how to write different types of stories, design digital content and produce audiovisual journalism.
This MA has a specific emphasis on the practice of journalism and develops the skills you'll need for employment in the journalism or creative industries.
You will learn how to write advanced news and features, gain an understanding of the scope of the laws affecting journalists and develop the editorial, interpersonal and self-management skills needed to work within the media industry. You'll examine the journalism business, have the opportunity to specialise in magazine journalism and study shorthand.
You'll also gain practical skills such as audio and video production and photo editing. In your final term you'll choose between either an academic dissertation or a journalism project route – which allows you to work in a team to produce a magazine.
We have a number of dedicated multimedia newsrooms, fitted with Mac computers, a video suite and a viewing room containing industry-standard software, which are designed to give you the experience of working in a fast-paced environment. You'll be taught by a journalism team who have worked for the Daily Mail, the Guardian, Financial Times, the BBC and Reuters.
Carrying out work placements is an important part of this course and you'll need to complete a minimum of six weeks' industry work experience. Not only will you be putting the skills you've learnt on the course into practice, you'll learn valuable new ones, build a strong CV and make vital industry contacts.
There are visits to journalism and media organisations, such as the BBC, as well as special seminars and workshops held by industry professionals. Roehampton has links with local media organisations such as Haymarket Media Group. We also have a strong relationship with Newsquest, which, among other newspapers and websites, publishes the Wandsworth Guardian. These relationships have led to volunteering opportunities and paid internships for students as junior reporters.
In the autumn term, you will learn about the legal and ethical aspects of journalism, covering concepts such as libel, confidentiality, copyright and privacy. You will also explore media regulation. You will develop your advanced news and feature writing skills, as well as learning how to sub-edit a range of copy for print and online. Plus, you'll also produce your own journalism portfolio.
In the spring term, you'll study social media and data journalism, and explore content creation and the distribution of news via social media. In Multimedia Journalism, you will focus on content production within the digital media. You will gain experience in audio, multimedia and video journalism, as well as developing basic editing and sequencing skills, and an understanding of audio-visual hardware and software.
In the final term, you'll choose between a dissertation and a journalism project. The Journalism Project route will give you an in-depth understanding of the way magazines are organised, developed and produced, as well as an insight into the rapid evolution of magazines into multimedia products. You will get to produce a print and online magazine, replicating as much as possible the conditions, organisation and pace of the production of a real magazine.

Careers in broadcasting, journalism, publishing, professional writing, public relations and social media. The MA also functions as a pathway to a PhD for those pursuing a career in academia.
Our course explores in both theoretical and practical terms current issues in journalism in the context of the digital revolution and media convergence.
With guest lecturers from the BBC and other media organisations, practical workshops and newsdays in industry standard radio and TV studios, the syllabus is as close to real life in the world of digital media as one can get. The theory informs the practice to produce critical and autonomous professionals capable of working with confidence in any global media environment.
This course will be taught through lectures, presentations, seminars and workshops aimed at developing your understanding of the theory and practice of international and online journalism. There will be a number of visiting speakers and guest lecturers, and full use will be made of the growing links between our courses and the BBC and ITV through our base at MediaCityUK to facilitate joint projects and enable students to attend and participate in industry events.
Student-led independent research, independent study, and project work such as newsdays, will be used alongside ‘problem-based’ and ‘task-based’ teaching, learning and assessment strategies. These will be integrated with an assessment strategy based on outcomes, students’ reflective self-assessments and learning plans. You will also undertake a period of work placement within the journalism community of practice, which will be supported by your module tutors. In certain cases, international students may be able to undertake this work placement in their home country.

Graduates can enter careers in various forms of journalism (print, broadcast or online) either in reporting or management roles, public relations, researchers, media analysts and advisers all either working in this country or abroad. Journalists could work as UK-based foreign correspondents travelling abroad or full-time in overseas postings.
LINKS WITH INDUSTRY
This course is based at MediaCityUK, with the BBC and ITV as neighbours, and our students benefit from the strong relationships that our journalism courses have developed with the regional press as well as local radio and TV stations over the years. This new course enables links to be established with journalism provision in universities around the world as well as international news organisations.
Graduates can undertake a postgraduate degree by research at MPhil (two years full-time) or PhD level (three years full-time). This could occur in any field of communications, journalism and media. The International Journalism MA is a professional/practice course with an emphasis on developing practical skills in journalism. The teaching staff are all professional journalists in print, broadcast or online. We focus on "learning by doing" - you cover real stories and produce newspapers, run a radio station, broadcast on the internet, and produce television news programmes and multimedia websites.
During the course, you have opportunities to meet, listen to and question journalists and other people from the media. You are encouraged to reflect on your own experiences as journalists and the ways in which practicing journalists do their jobs by developing an understanding of ethical issues in journalism, the media and international reporting.
You will be treated as a professional journalist throughout the practice-based elements of the course. Learning is intensive and at times teaching hours will resemble those of a full-time job.
Some modules are taught in lecture theatres, such as Global Journalism and Society and Ethics, Rules and Standards, but most are small-group workshops that allow you to develop your journalistic skills and knowledge with the support of our expert academics.
Assessment is part of learning, and course assessments vary to reflect the learning being

The MA in Digital Media offers an innovative interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to contemporary technology and new media, drawing upon expertise in Media and Communication Studies.
The MA in Digital Media examines some of the key issues confronting twenty-first century global societies through a dynamic programme that combines theoretical and applied perspectives.
Digital Media students will be encouraged to apply media theory, political and social theory and research tools in analysing and understanding digital media.
