The MA Global Media Business, awarded by the University of Westminster is the final award, of a two-year programme managed jointly by Westminster and the Communication University of China (CUC). Conferred by the University of Westminster, the Masters degree is also licensed and recognised by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

Media professionals and media firms are united in their need to acquire the commercial, strategic and managerial skills to prosper in an industry undergoing constant fundamental change. This course is designed to address these needs, developing entrepreneurial leaders equipped to deal with the complex and novel challenges presented by new technologies, consumer behaviour, and evolving business models.

The course will enable you to identify and analyse strategic and operational problems and opportunities, understand, quantify and access national and international media markets, and use foresight and planning techniques to understand and respond to change. As well as being able to manage complex media projects, you will also have the skills to engage in strategic direction setting, deploy business-planning skills, and excel in leadership and implementation.

The course is delivered by academic staff with lengthy experience of advising and managing media organisations. Teaching methods are based around practical problems and include in-class exercises and individuals and group projects and assessment. Assignments will enable you to develop and apply your skills in creative project development and business planning.

The MA Global Media Business is a full-time course, delivered using a combination of full-time and intensive block mode teaching. Although a collaborative programme, the final degree is assessed and awarded by the University of Westminster, and is governed by its regulations and quality assurance procedures.

Course content

The course provides a rounded suite of managerial and commercial skills, rooted in a critical understanding of today's media and content industries, building on our role as a leader in UK media research. Practice-based assignments, such as the integrating business-planning project, play an essential role in enabling you to apply ideas and learning in a creative fashion.

The course consists of eight credit-bearing modules and an additional key skills module which includes the use of quantitative methods and software tools.

Modules

Delivery of the MA in Global Media Business is divided between Beijing and Westminster’s Harrow campus. The first semester is taught by UK faculty staff making regular visits to Beijing. They deliver the programme in intensive teaching blocks, typically of 2-4 days teaching.

Block mode teaching is interspersed by guided independent study and project work. Downloadable lectures and supplementary information is provided via the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. Tutors are also available for remote tutorials using services such as Collaborate, Skype or WeChat.

The course is designed for recent graduates seeking a career in traditional and new media organisations. It provides a combination of business and media skills designed to equip you to take up an entry-level position in today’s media organisations.

You will learn how media organisations are engaging with the challenges resulting from the emergence of digital media technologies and platforms. The course introduces you to the processes by which media organisations develop their corporate strategies, business plans, marketing and production operations as they respond to radical change in the commercial environment.

The course is designed to enable you to find and take up work placements and internships at media organisations in London during the course of your studies. Our students have successfully completed internships at TV production companies like the BBC, technology companies like Google, as well as many other multimedia, advertising and news organisations in London. Some have successfully started their own businesses in the UK.

Whether you are planning a career in a media organisation or seeking to create your own new business start up, the MA International Media Business aims to provide the analytical insight, operational knowledge and planning skills you will need to prosper. Business, ethics and society

Business, ethics and society investigates and activates the role of business as ethical and social leaders. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of internal and external ethical and societal forces that businesses face, respond to and activate. Business, ethics and society especially develops students' critical engagement and leadership capabilities to manage diversity, inclusiveness, and work and life. These capacities are developed within a strong context of ethics and corporate responsibility, and the domestic and international environments in that organisations operate. The specialisation prepares students for active managerial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Commercialisation

Commercialisation is the process or cycle of introducing a new product or production method into the market. The commercialisation process or cycle can be applied in many different contexts, including: art, design, and architecture; arts and humanities; business and economics; education; engineering; information technology; law; medicine, nursing and health sciences; pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences; and science and technology. The specialisation provides a comprehensive business-focused setting to help students develop the necessary business and entrepreneurial acumen and commercialisation knowledge to succeed. Commercialisation especially develops students' new venture finance, patenting, innovation, and wealth pathways skills and knowledge. The specialisation prepares students, particularly facilitated by the commercialisation project, for commercialisation and entrepreneurial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Information technology

The information technology discipline allows students to build upon the core program with six units dealing with current practices and emerging strategies for the application of information technology in business management. Students are introduced to management of the creation, storage, recall and dissemination of business records within organisation-wide frameworks and they will gain a high-level of understanding of the processes of project management. Units are taught by the Faculty of Information Technology.

Law and responsible business

The fortunes of a business can quickly turn around if it does not pay proper attention to the laws that regulate its organisation and activities. The law provides the framework for all aspects of business from the internal management of business organisations to their relationships with clients, consumers and the public. The units in this specialisation provide students with an understanding of the legal framework within which business operates and the fundamental laws that regulate business activities and transactions, with particular emphasis on how legal and social responsibility considerations should impact business decision-making.

Managing human capital

Managing human capital is the recognition of people as valuable contributors, and the systems and operations for investing in people to enhance their contributions. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of managing and developing people within an international context. Managing human capital develops students' strategic and operational people management knowledge and skills, particularly for diverse, inclusive, and productive workplaces. This specialisation prepares students for careers in human resource management, industrial relations, consulting, public sector management, and general people management roles.

Marketing

Marketing is a fun, dynamic, complex activity (and discipline) that focuses on providing value to both organisations and consumers. Very simply, marketing is about matching what an organisation has (or can do) with someone who wants it. Marketing is about selling, it is about advertising, but it also so much more. The study and practice of the 'so much more' is what makes marketing so interesting!

In today's dynamic and global business environment, marketing permeates all areas of operations and forms an integral element of business growth and achievement. Project management

A project is a collection of activities and resources undertaken to achieve planned objectives, which could be defined in terms of time, quality and cost or economic outcomes. Project management is the process of ensuring defined goals are achieved in relation to a project. This specialisation provides graduates with the knowledge, technology and processes employed in project management that allow them to pursue such professional roles in industry and government. Risk management

Risk is defined by AS/NZS ISO 31000: 2009 as 'the effect of uncertainty on objectives'. The management of risk is an evolving discipline that builds on current knowledge in a diverse range of activities. The risk management specialisation focuses on operational and financial risk in today's commercial world. It provides extended skills in the strategic and process applications of risk management and prepares for the increasingly complex risk management issues faced in many areas of business and government. Supply chain management

Diplomacy and trade
Diplomacy and trade provides formal academic study across a range of disciplines relevant to the needs of organisations operating in the global environment. It provides high-level training in the fields of diplomacy, economics, law and contemporary politics. This specialisation is aimed at recent graduates who hope to work in the public and private sectors, or those who presently work in these sectors, and wish to increase their understanding of the international environment. It is designed to provide the knowledge needed to workin the government sector, implementing and providing policy advice on foreign affairs, trade, and business-related issues.

In the private domain, the course is designed for individuals who are operating, or looking to work, in an international capacity in both the corporate or not-for-profit sector.

International business
This specialisation investigates inter-disciplinary contemporary international business. Students will be engaged with international management, law, finance, economics, marketing, and strategy, enabling analytical skills that can be applied in a variety of organisational settings. Information Systems Evaluation and Integration Group

Academics who teach on this exciting programme are part of the Information Systems Evaluation and Integration Group which is a research centre of excellence that supports a number of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded networks and projects. This group is housed in the Brunel Business School in collaboration with the excellent-rated (RAE score 5) School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics. ISEing is the first multi-disciplinary research group to receive government funding in the areas of Information Systems Evaluation, Enterprise Integration and eGovernment.

Teaching

The course is structured so that full-time students take four 15 credit modules per term, plus a 60 credit dissertation module in term 3. Each 15 credit module demands 150 hours of study comprised of 22 hours of tutor arranged contact time and a minimum of 128 hours of non-contact student managed time. Each module has its own form of assessment held at the end of the term in which the module runs, and can include essays, projects and group assignments. The dissertation is an extended research oriented task conducted individually and offers the opportunity for students to undertake in-depth investigation in to a topic of their choosing. Students may choose to develop a project in collaboration with an industrial partner, which can be focused on business solutions of practical relevance (rather than theoretical research).

Modes of Study

1-year full-time in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

1-year full-time in January: The taught element of the programme includes 8 modules which are delivered in two terms (four in January to April, and four in September to December); delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. The dissertation is undertaken May to August, and then can be completed January to March after the second teaching term.

Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly be giving an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutor at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but, across your degree scheme as a whole, you can expect a mixture of exams, coursework, essays, practical work, presentations, and individual and group projects.

We recognise that the majority of our students undertake postgraduate qualifications to improve their prospects in the job market. Why Study Journalism & Media Communications at Griffith College?

The Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism & Media Communications is conducted on both a full and part-time basis over a 1-2 year period and allows students to develop their own study path through the selection of elective modules. The course programme is designed with input from Irish journalists, academics and media practitioners and offers a comprehensive multimedia syllabus that is relevant to current and emerging job opportunities, and reflective of technical, creative, social and market developments. Graduates of the course may progress onto the Dissertation stage to obtain the full MA in Journalism & Media Communications.

You will significantly develop your writing, production and communication skills, exploring areas like reporting, feature writing and investigative journalism,

You will be challenged in real journalistic situations in print, broadcast and online media in a media working environment through work with the college magazine, online publications and radio station.

Course Structure

The MA in Journalism and Media Communications is a 90 credit programme consisting of ten taught modules. There are eight mandatory modules on the programme and students also acquire subject specialisations by completing two electives (from a choice of five). Shorthand is also offered on the full-time programme as a noncredit elective.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Media Communications programme is a 60 credit programme which consists of the ten taught modules and does not include the dissertation module. The MA in Journalism and Media Communications is assessed mainly through continuous assessment. As assignments are designed to reflect the specific educational requirements of each particular module, they can differ significantly from one module to another (e.g. essays in Sociology of the Media, research proposals in Research Methods; the production of a radio programme/ newspaper article in Writing and Reporting, exercises in layout and design in Newspaper and Magazine Production; presentations in Communications and Audience Theories, etc.)

Mature Applicants

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

There are opportunities to take part in visits to a range of destinations such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park - studying the history of it as a place, changing use of land and community development through culture - and the BBC in Salford, focusing on the relation between the corporation and local area.

Adaptations
Examine adaptation in the broadest sense. Not merely of literature to film, for example, but of stage plays to radio, comics to video games and cover versions of original songs.
