The course introduces you to the processes by which media organisations develop their corporate strategies, business plans, marketing and production operations as they respond to radical change in the commercial environment.
The course is designed to enable you to find and take up work placements and internships at media organisations in London during the course of your studies. Our students have successfully completed internships at TV production companies like the BBC, technology companies like Google, as well as many other multimedia, advertising and news organisations in London. International Media Business students have gone on to work for many social media business including Facebook, Youtube, Google as well as traditional media firms like Sky, Disney and Bloomberg. The MA Global Media Business, awarded by the University of Westminster is the final award, of a two-year programme managed jointly by Westminster and the Communication University of China (CUC). Conferred by the University of Westminster, the Masters degree is also licensed and recognised by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.
Media professionals and media firms are united in their need to acquire the commercial, strategic and managerial skills to prosper in an industry undergoing constant fundamental change. This course is designed to address these needs, developing entrepreneurial leaders equipped to deal with the complex and novel challenges presented by new technologies, consumer behaviour, and evolving business models.
The course will enable you to identify and analyse strategic and operational problems and opportunities, understand, quantify and access national and international media markets, and use foresight and planning techniques to understand and respond to change. As well as being able to manage complex media projects, you will also have the skills to engage in strategic direction setting, deploy business-planning skills, and excel in leadership and implementation.
The course is delivered by academic staff with lengthy experience of advising and managing media organisations. Teaching methods are based around practical problems and include in-class exercises and individuals and group projects and assessment. Assignments will enable you to develop and apply your skills in creative project development and business planning.
The MA Global Media Business is a full-time course, delivered using a combination of full-time and intensive block mode teaching. Although a collaborative programme, the final degree is assessed and awarded by the University of Westminster, and is governed by its regulations and quality assurance procedures.
The course provides a rounded suite of managerial and commercial skills, rooted in a critical understanding of today's media and content industries, building on our role as a leader in UK media research. Practice-based assignments, such as the integrating business-planning project, play an essential role in enabling you to apply ideas and learning in a creative fashion.
The course consists of eight credit-bearing modules and an additional key skills module which includes the use of quantitative methods and software tools.
Delivery of the MA in Global Media Business is divided between Beijing and Westminster’s Harrow campus. The first semester is taught by UK faculty staff making regular visits to Beijing. They deliver the programme in intensive teaching blocks, typically of 2-4 days teaching.
Block mode teaching is interspersed by guided independent study and project work. Downloadable lectures and supplementary information is provided via the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. Tutors are also available for remote tutorials using services such as Collaborate, Skype or WeChat.

The Media and Development MA is an interdisciplinary course that teaches main theories, concepts, case studies and practical media skills around the theme of media and development and its implications for less developed countries. The MFA in Film & Media Art program seeks talented and ambitious students at all levels offering three entry points.
Our unique program provides students of all levels with the opportunity to develop as engaged and versatile creative professionals and media artists. Students will work with image and sound to entertain, inform, persuade, and challenge, using both traditional and emergent media forms. They will develop an understanding of the disciplines of film, video, audio, and interactive media production, bringing this understanding to bear on traditional and convergent media works.
The MFA in Film and Media Art is a terminal degree for students who wish to pursue careers as media production professionals and artists, or who want to teach at the college or university level. Students are able to explore a variety of media production genres—computer animation, documentary, experimental media, fiction narrative, installation, interactive art, and sound design—with a degree program that provides foundational knowledge in the use of media technologies, theory, critical and historical context, and media business while offering a set of courses of advanced training and mentorship in their specific area of interest.
Our program has three distinct entry points and varies in length from 2-3 years depending on which phase of the program you begin in. This approach allows us to welcome creative students at any stage of development. There are 3 distinct phases to the program to help students acquire the specialized skills and creative resources required for the collaborative nature of production work. Students in the Film and Media Art program study the history and critical theories that provide the foundation for their work, so as to understand the context of their creative output and to be able to evaluate its effectiveness.
Students will have the opportunity to apply for advanced standing during the admissions process. Advanced standing will allow a student to begin the program in either Phase II or Phase III.
Phase I – Foundational (6 semesters; 64 credits)
Most students will begin the program in this phase. It builds a solid foundation in the first semester in theory and history and an intensive introduction to writing and production skills in a variety of media platforms.
Phase II – Intermediate Practitioner (5 semesters; 52 credits)
After meeting with the Graduate Program Director, students will develop a customized plan of study that allows for artistic exploration while developing the technical proficiency to undertake their thesis project.
Students will begin to focus in one or more areas of media production, computer animation, documentary, experimental media, fiction narrative, installation, interactive art, and sound design or an individualized hybrid form.
For example, a student pursuing professional and artistic development as a documentary filmmaker could take the History of Documentary seminar and the Documentary Workshop and Advanced Documentary courses. Electives and directed study in advanced production (e.g. cinematography, producing, editing and interactive media) are also available, so the aspiring documentarian could also opt to take courses in interactive media and computer animation.
Phase III - Advanced practitioner (4 semesters; 40 credits)
Students in Phase III come ready to begin working on their thesis project. Students meet with their program advisor to select courses that support their thesis work as well as their specific learning needs. In addition, students concentrate on developing their artistic vision through the thesis proposal process while building new skills and learning advanced production techniques. The MFA Production Workshop is a key component to the program and provides students with support in producing an ongoing body of work within a collaborative, creative community. In the MFA Production Workshop, students present works-in-progress to their peers and faculty for critiques.
Once you have completed your thesis project, all students take part in a public screening of MFA works for the year. This is the last MFA requirement and a celebration of student achievements.

You will examine key developments in the media and communications industries associated with the logic of globalisation, and explore the complex nature of the globalisation process in the media. You will gain a relevant, well-grounded, high-quality education and skill base, enabling you to develop a clear and comprehensive understanding of communication and the mass media.

Equally, there are a number of activities run within the Department that provide students with opportunities for networking and increasing their employability. CAMRI and associated research centres run regular seminars, workshops and conferences which our students can attend for free. The Global Media MA course is well established and has a strong international reputation. Our students are very successful in gaining employment, in many cases straight from graduating the course. During the programme you will develop three primary skill sets: the ability to analyse and strategically approach media and its impact on society; the capability to work with media and communication both methodologically and systematically; the knowledge required to produce media texts, both individually and collaboratively. Compared to bachelor-level degrees, this advanced programme has a clear focus on the development of strategic expertise, a skill crucial for those intending to pursue a professional career in media and communication. The programme is developed alongside and conducted in collaboration with Media Evolution, a media cluster with over 350 member companies based in Malmö. This facilitates a crossover between the academic and professional worlds and allows you as a student to develop skills in both areas throughout your studies. Throughout the duration of the programme you will get the chance to meet a number of international guest lecturers from universities all across the world, further adding to the global relevance of the programme.
The first semester focuses on examining key themes in communication studies and on how the creative industries of today are operated. During the second semester you will learn more about the possibilities with collaborative media. The year ends with a (one-year, 15 credits) master's thesis.

The programme, which is web-based and full-time, makes education available to students globally and offers a unique blend of distance and campus based learning. The seminars are compulsory, and you can either attend in Malmö or online. Your studies are based in our modern media labs in the Department of Media Arts and Communication. Many of our academic staff bring industry experience to their teaching. The course also includes a regular programme of industry speakers and client based projects, as well as a foundation for those wishing to move into media management roles within organisations, recognise existing skills and knowledge through a formal qualification, or start their own media business.
The course is made up of eight taught modules, plus a major linked project where you could work with or within an organisation. All modules are mandatory and have been tailored to match the in demand skills and experience of the creative media industry. The vast majority of teaching is in small groups (typically less than 20) allowing for bespoke delivery.
Students will gain an understanding of how to exploit the latest digital media technologies and platforms, across interactive, social and mobile content, as well as the management of digital media businesses, organisations and teams. The course uses industry-standard software and hardware tools such as Adobe and Apple software in well-equipped media studios and associated lab facilities. The course is designed to develop business awareness, entrepreneurial skills, management confidence and a portfolio of industry experience through client based media projects, industry networking and digital media industry insight.
You study a range of modules designed to prepare you for real world challenges. Typical projects may include • management of communication channels for promotion and marketing • creation of digital marketing campaigns • management of software solutions to engage audiences • management of knowledge dissemination across organisations • mobile media, social media and app design • insight into industry best practice • management of media people and teams • entrepreneurship and business skills.
The course has been designed in conjunction with industry professionals and aims to give you real world experience through working on live client briefs. You also work with the award winning Venture Matrix to enhance your employability and enterprise skills. Assessment is based primarily on individual project work, as well as team based projects and presentations. These projects allow students to access industry, network and build a portfolio of client based work.
Work based learning is also encouraged as part of the degree. Module teams will support students who wish to apply their studies directly to the work place. The Digital Media Management Project module in particular allows students to work with or within organisations on projects to enhance a company or organisation.
A number of industry days and events are also held on campus and within the Sheffield Cultural Industries Quarter where students can take part in workshops, talks, and exhibitions held by creative media industry representatives, professionals, and companies/ organisations. These activities give a window to the world of work and opportunities that lie ahead. They provide students with direct access to industry and exposure to opportunities within the industry.
The creative industries sector is vibrant, fast growing and brings immense benefit to developed economies. In the UK alone, the creative industries are worth over £77 billion a year and account for 5% of the economy, with exports of over £17 billion per annum. Skilled digital media management professionals are in demand to meet this phenomenal growth.

This multidisciplinary programme will provide students with an in-depth understanding of the interrelationships between areas of finance and the global economy as they play out in a rapidly evolving international environment.
This programme examines key issues from both a business and economic perspective, including how multinational corporations leverage financial markets when seeking to exploit international business opportunities, the management challenges presented, and the relevance of these to financial and capital markets.
Students will gain an understanding of the international business environment and its competitive and investment climate. Using frameworks and methodologies, students will also investigate the interaction between firm strategies, economic policies and the changing international environment.

In addition students must choose optional modules up to the value of 60 credits. Students must choose at least 20 credits from section B and section C from the lists below and a further 20 credits from either section B or C.

Graduates of the MSc International Business and Finance follow a variety of career paths upon graduation. The Big Data in Business pathway will provide you with the knowledge and skills to understand and direct the strategic use of the vast amounts of information being generated by businesses today.
Our students learn to develop a strategic approach to managing Big Data in business, through the analysis of business problems as well as understanding different approaches to business intelligence. Through this, they are able to create usable business intelligence to create competitive advantage for their organisation.

How you will learn

We offer high-quality technical skills training as well as a deep understanding of the importance of personal development for leaders, a thread that runs through all of our Masters programmes.
Our postgraduate masters programmes feature a mix of core and optional modules, allowing you to tailor your degree towards your individual personal development needs and career ambitions. You will complete up to 10 taught modules during your programme, totalling 180 credits. One module usually equates to 20 credits or 10 hours of work per week. Your week will include lectures, tutorials, workshops and personal study, with each accounting for 25% of your time on average. This stimulating mix of lectures and interactive tutorials provides you with the opportunity to discuss and explore the subject material in depth with your lecturers and fellow students. You will be introduced to the latest thinking and research findings and be able to challenge some of those that have created it. You will also explore real-world issues and tackle current business challenges, and interact with guest lectures and speakers from industry, giving you the opportunity to test, extend and refine your knowledge and skills.
How we assess you
You will learn and be assessed through a wide variety of teaching methods which vary depending on your chosen Masters programme. These include online materials and multimedia content, guest lectures, individual and group assignments, case studies, field visits, dealing room simulations, presentations, applied projects, consultancy work and examinations.
On average examinations form around 70% of the assessed work with the remaining 30% coming from coursework, including a written dissertation or project depending on your chosen programme. The exam period falls between April and June in the summer term, with students taking an average of 5 or 6 exams. Graduation normally takes place in December.
While postgraduate students are self-motivated and determined individuals, study at this level can present additional pressures which we take seriously. Lecturers are available to discuss the content of each module and your personal tutor can meet with you regularly to discuss any additional issues. Full-time support staff are also available to help with any questions or issues that may arise during your time at Henley
Each pathway of our MSc Information Management is designed to give a rigorous academic understanding of real-life and current business issues. Graduates of the Big Data in Business pathway will be equipped to develop strategies to manage Big Data. These skills are much in demand, in a variety of fields.
A number of our students join our PhD programmes each year.
Students who pass the module – Business Domain and Requirements Analysis with a mark of 60 or above will be eligible for the British Computer Society Professional Certificate in Business Analysis Practice.
