What you will study

The curriculum has been developed in consultation with industry and can be broadly grouped in three areas: the introduction of new facts and concepts in measurement and control; the application of facts and concepts to real measurement problems and systems; and subjects which are of general importance to the professional engineer, for example safety and safety management and management ethics and project planning.

Students complete eight taught modules - four in trimester A and four in trimester B; and a Masters project in trimester C.The MSc project will be carried out at the student's workplace; this can be in an area relevant to the company's production/maintenance function, thus providing maximum benefit to both the company and the individual.

Control Systems

Consolidates advanced classical and modern control design techniques emphasising the practical considerations in applying control design in an industrial environment. The appropriateness and difficulties encountered in applying various design techniques in practice will be explored. In particular system sensitivity, robustness and nonlinearity will be studied.

Data Acquisition and Analysis

Develops the ability to evaluate, in a given situation, the most appropriate strategy for acquiring data and understand the merits of this strategy with respect to other approaches. A range of modern time and frequency domain analysis techniques will also be discussed.

Industrial Case Studies

Following on from the foundation in measurement and instrumentation provided by the Measurement Theory and Devices module, students will now be equipped to study in depth instrumentation in industrial processes. This module will cover aspects of designing sensor systems for industrial measurements, instrument control, system troubleshooting and optimisation in industrial applications.

Distributed Instrumentation

Develops the ability to evaluate, in a given situation, the most appropriate strategy for acquiring and transmitting data and understand the merits of this strategy with respect to other approaches. A wide range of different instrument communication and networking techniques will be studied. In addition the module provides practical experience of hardware setup and software development, relating to these techniques.

Industrial Process Systems

Identification and system modelling from real data play an important role in this module. This approach thus leads to more complex and realistic models that can be used to design more robust and reliable controllers that take into account problematic physical effects such as time-delays and sensor noise. The module will cover more advanced aspects of control design such as feed forward and multivariable control.

Measurement Systems

A range of advanced measurement systems will be studied in depth. Sensors, signal processing, low-level signal measurements, noise-reduction methods and appropriate measurement strategies will be applied to industrial and environmental applications. The influence of environmental factors and operation conditions will be considered in relation to the optimisation of the measurement system.

Measurement Theory and Devices

Adopts a generalised approach to measurement theory and devices, allowing students to become familiar with the characteristics of measurement systems in terms of the underlying principles. In this way, the students will be able to develop a systems approach to problem solving. They should find this methodology to be a considerable benefit to them when they have to apply their expertise to solving more complex industrial measurement problems.

Professional Practice

Develops the students' ability to select, develop and plan an MSc research project, to research and critically analyse the literature associated with the project and to present research findings effectively, it will also provide students with the ability to apply a competent process of thinking to project planning and give them a critical understanding of safe and ethical working.

The MERM Program is dedicated to advancing the science and practice of measurement, program evaluation, and research methodology in the social and behavioral sciences (e.g., Psychology, Education, Quality of Life Studies, Health Studies). For more than 25 years, the faculty and students of the MERM program have been contributing to its international reputation as a leader in the field. Our students and faculty have done research in human and health services, psychological, educational, community and health settings. The essential difference between the MA and MED in MERM is that the MED is wholly course based whereas the MA requires two fewer courses but the completion of a master's thesis. As such completion of a master's thesis is viewed as a prerequisite for the pursuit of doctoral studies in most institutions.

Program Overview

The graduate program in Measurement, Evaluation, and Research Methodology (MERM) offers Ph.D., M.A., and M.Ed. degrees. The MERM area focuses on the preparation of graduate students to be methodological and measurement specialists. We strive to promote in our research, student supervision, and teaching the highest standards of measurement and research methodology in our discipline. Upon degree completion, our master's and Ph.D. students are employed as university faculty, data analysts, research scientists, test developers, directors of research in school districts or government, research consultants, assessment and testing specialists in business, industry, and education, certification and credentialing professionals, and psychometricians at research and testing organizations.

MERM students generally fit into one of three categories:
1. Students who have an applied interest in educational and psychological measurement, program evaluation, or data analysis. Although they may have some preparation in measurement and data analysis in their undergraduate studies, this is not always the case. These students are more oriented toward the use of measurement, program evaluation, or data analysis techniques in fields such as education, psychology, or health.

2. Students who have strong theoretical interests in technical problems related to areas such as test theory, item response theory, assessment, statistics, factor analysis, and multi-level modeling. Although some of these students come to the Program with some statistical and/or mathematical background, often obtained while studying in another social science discipline such as psychology or sociology, other students arrive with degrees in statistics or mathematics as well.
3. Students who find it compatible with their career goals to give equal attention to both applied and theoretical aspects of this program.

The Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement (CCENM) is designed for professionals working in acoustics, including environmental health officers, sound engineers and event managers who are looking to further their specialist knowledge and skills.

This five-day course seeks to provide delegates with a basic knowledge of the methodology of environmental noise measurement, including the use and accuracy requirements of sound level meters and analysers and to enable them be aware of the significance of measurement data against the framework of standards and legislation for environmental noise.

The aims of the course are to:

• Provide candidates with a basic knowledge of the methodology of environmental noise measurement, including, in particular, the use and of sound level meters and analysers.

Condition Monitoring

Aims to provide an understanding of both Mechanical and Electrical Condition monitoring and associated instrumentation requirements for successful condition monitoring. The main focus in Mechanical Condition Monitoring is vibration monitoring since this is the most popular method of determining the condition and diagnosing faults in rotational machines, although other techniques used in condition monitoring are also covered.

The subject will ensure that students combine self-analysis and reflective learning skills with professional methodologies, so as to expand analytic and strategic thinking capabilities. It will provide practical experience for students to develop their skills in a profession relevant to their Master specialisation. All students will complete a 2,000-word scoping document, and either undertake a work placement in Australia for 210 hours (which includes an employer’s report) and reflective journal (up to 5,000 words) OR complete a collaborative research project totalling up to 15,000 words OR students may choose to undertake a Workshop program. The workshop incorporates, lab work, site visits, guest industry lectures and practical assessment pieces equating to the same number of hours as a placement. The workshop offers students a mix of classroom learning and practical experiences. Students will meet and work with industry professionals and undertake assessment that is practical in nature. Ca’ Foscari University is now offering a curriculum completely taught in English (LM-77 - Scienze economico-aziendali - Management) in the MSc (Master of Science/Laurea Magistrale) degree in "Economia e Finanza – Economics and Finance".

This Master's Degree Programme specialising in finance involves two years of full-time study. It aims to prepare experts with proficiency in dealing with the main issues related to financial markets, brokerage management, financial investment management and financial risk measurement and management, financial consultancy and insurance, supplementary allowance and retirement funds management, internal organisation processes and administrative management of banks and financial institutions in general.

The Master's Degree Programme also offers the opportunity of participating in adouble degree programme in cooperation with the University Aix Marseille (France) and of obtaining a Double Master’s Degree in Economics, Econometrics and Finance (MEEF), for which scholarships are available. The programme draws upon a balanced blend of economic and mathematical methods to form specialists capable of contributing to the sustainable development of society and of providing prompt responses to economic crises. The Double Master’s Degree Programme has obtained official MOY (Mediterranean Office for Youth) recognition.

The programme is completed with a final master's thesis requiring students to work intensively on a topic of their choice with the support of regular meetings with their supervisor. Students will defend their master's thesis, which must be original and backed by exhaustive documentation and scientific investigation, before a committee of professors and experts.

How you learn

The course is delivered using a series of lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions.

Our MSc Petroleum Engineering is supported by excellent laboratory and engineering machine workshop facilities including fluid flow measurement, computer modelling laboratories, other laboratories and workshops, an excellent library and computing facilities. We have invested around £150,000 in laboratory equipment particularly in within core analysis and enhanced oil recovery. 

We have several computer laboratories equipped with specialised and general-purpose software. This generous computing provision gives you extended access to industry-standard software – it allows you to develop skills and techniques using important applications. For upstream processes, Teesside University has access to educational software packages like Petrel, Eclipse, CMG, PIPESIM and Ecrin to simulate the behaviour of oil reservoirs, calculating oil in situ, and oil and gas production optimisation. As for downstream processes, you can use HYSYS to test different scenarios to optimise plant designs. 

Petroleum Experts Ltd has donated to Teesside University a network system and 10 educational licences for the IPM suite (Integrated Production Modelling software) which includes Prosper, Gap, Mbal, Pvtp, Reveal and Resolve. This £1.3m system and software is used by our students to design complete field models including the reservoir tanks, all the wells and the surface gathering system.

Petroleum laboratory facilities

Enhanced oil recovery and core analysis laboratory

The flow through porous media, enhanced oil recovery techniques and core analysis is done in the core flooding lab. The lab is equipped with core plugging and trimming, core preparation and conventional core properties measurement equipment. At a higher level, the lab is also equipped to perform some special core analysis measurements such as fluid relative permeabilities as well as rock surface wetting quantification. 

Petrophysics laboratory

The petrophysics lab allows you to study the properties of rocks, particularly the measurement of porosity and evaluation of permeability. The lab is equipped with sieve analysis equipment to investigate grain sorting and its effect on permeability and the porosity of rocks. You are able to gauge saturation and fluid flow through porous media.

Surface characterisation laboratory

The rock surface characterisation lab is equipped with a zeta analyser to measure the rock surface electric charge. You study the rock surface wetting state, adsorption and desorption potential using digitised contact angle apparatus and thermos-gravimetric apparatus respectively.

Drilling laboratory

The drilling lab is equipped with mud measurement equipment including mud density, mud rheology and mud filtration systems to enable you to measure mud cake and formation damage. The lab highlights the importance of oilfield drilling fluids.

How you are assessed

Assessment varies from module to module. The assessment methodology could include in-course assignments, design exercises, technical reports, presentations or formal examinations. For your MSc project you prepare a dissertation.

This course provides both fundamental and applied knowledge to understand airflows, vehicle dynamics and control and methods for computational modelling. It will provide you with practical experience in the measurement, analysis, modelling and simulation of airflows and aerial vehicles.

You have the choice of two specialist options which you chose once you commence your studies: Flight Dynamics or Aerodynamics. 

Who is it for?

Suitable if you have an interest in aerodynamic design, flow control, flow measurement, flight dynamics and flight control. Choose your specialist option once you commence your studies.

  • Flight Dynamics option: if you want to develop a career in flight physics and aircraft stability and control, more specifically in the fields of flight control system design, flight simulation and flight testing.

Why this course?

The aerospace industry in the UK is the largest in the world, outside of the USA. Aerodynamics and flight dynamics will remain a key element in the development of future aircraft and in reducing civil transport environmental issues, making significant contributions to the next generation of aircraft configurations. 

In the military arena, aerodynamic modelling and flight dynamics play an important role in the design and development of combat aircraft and unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). The continuing search for aerodynamic refinement and performance optimisation for the next generation of aircraft and surface vehicles creates the need for specialist knowledge of fluid flow behaviour.

Cranfield University has been at the forefront of postgraduate education in aerospace engineering since 1946. The MSc in Aerospace Dynamics stems from the programme in Aerodynamics which was one of the first masters' courses offered by Cranfield and is an important part of our heritage. The integration of aerodynamics with flight dynamics reflects the long-term link with the aircraft flight test activity established by Cranfield. 

Graduates of this course are eligible to join the Cranfield College of Aeronautics Alumni Association (CCAAA), an active community which holds a number of networking and social events throughout the year.

The MSc in Aerospace Dynamics is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.

Course details

This course consists of optional taught modules, an individual research project and a group flight test project.

The group flight test project consists of two compulsory modules that offer an initial introduction to aerospace dynamics and provide grounding for the group flight test. Choice is a key feature of this course, with specialist options in either aerodynamics or flight dynamics. Choose your option once you have commenced your studies.

Group project

All students undertake the Group Flight Test Report during October to December. This involves a series of flight tests in the The National Flying Laboratory Centre (NFLC) Jetstream which are undertaken, reported and presented as a group exercise. This is an important part of the course as it enables candidates to experience the application of specialist skills within a real plane to a collaborative report/presentation.

Individual project

The individual research project allows you to delve deeper into an area of specific interest. It is very common for industrial partners to put forward real world problems or areas of development as potential research project topics. The project is carried out under the guidance of an academic staff member who acts as your supervisor. The individual research project component takes place between April and August.

If agreed with the course director, part-time students have the opportunity to undertake projects in collaboration with their place of work, which would be supported by academic supervision.
