The Master of Commerce (MCom) degree allows for the development of individual research. Starting with a sound background of coursework, students will have the opportunity to contribute to existing fields or to begin to develop new areas of research.

The MCom can be pursued by a combination of papers and thesis, or by thesis only. Students who have a good Bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) will complete the MCom by papers and thesis (at least two years' full-time study). The first year consists of a selection of papers worth 144 points, leading to a Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce (PGDipCom). Students who have a good Honours degree or a PGDipCom (or equivalent qualification) can complete an MCom by thesis only (minimum one year).

Structure of the Programme

-The degree may be awarded in any of the subjects listed above. With the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Commerce) the degree may be awarded in a subject not listed above.
-The programme of study shall consist of the preparation and submission of a thesis embodying the results of supervised research. In some cases, a candidate may also be required to take and pass approved papers, normally at 400-level, in addition to completing a thesis.
-The candidate shall, before commencing the investigation to be described in the thesis, secure the approval of the Head of the Department concerned for the topic, the supervisor(s) and the proposed course of the investigation.
-A candidate may not present a thesis which has previously been accepted for another degree.
-For the thesis, the research should be of a kind that a diligent and competent student should complete within one year of full-time study.

However there is a shortage of Development Finance experts in Africa, where the expertise is needed most. It's for this reason the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business (GSB), has partnered with Africagrowth Institute (AGI), to create the Master of Commerce Degree in Development Finance.

Take your Honours degree or Postgraduate Diploma to the next level with a Master of Commerce (MCom). You'll take an in-depth look at an issue through completing a research thesis, gaining advanced knowledge of your subject area and thorough training in independent research.

Once complete, you'll have the tools and capabilities you need for a career in business or public policy. You'll also be able to apply for PhD study in New Zealand or overseas.

This 120-point programme will take you 12 months to complete full time, or one and a half to two years part time. You must take at least 90 points of research. This means you'll complete a research thesis made up of a literature review, data collection and analysis, and your findings. A thesis is usually 30,000–40,000 words.

Available subjects

Workload

If you are studying full time, you can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year. Part-time students will need to do around 20–24 hours of work a week so make sure you take this into account if you are working.

Further study

At the end of your Master's you can choose to continue your research and apply to do a PhD.

Workload

If you are studying full time, you can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 24–28 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working full time.

If you're looking to accelerate your professional career by gaining expertise in an area of business you're passionate about, or want to prepare for a PhD or research career, this degree is designed for you.

The Master of Management Studies (MMS) degree will bring you closer to the frontiers of knowledge in your specialist field, and prepare you for leadership roles that require a high level of critical thinking and information analysis.

This degree normally includes both taught and research papers, but can also be taken as a full research degree.

Study part-time or full-time for 1-2 years (120 or 180 points), starting in either February (A Semester) or July (B Semester). Normally all papers are taken within a single specialist subject or interdisciplinary area.

MMS in Finance - Professional (Currently not available, a revised version will be offered in September 2018)

This one-year taught masters specialist programme is not currently available for new enrolments. However, a revised version will be offered, starting in September 2018. Further details will be announced soon.

This one-year programme (180 points) is aimed at those seeking industry-relevant skills and knowledge needed to build a professional career in the financial industry. It has a strong practical focus and is ideal for students who have never majored in Finance before.

The 11 required papers will develop your foundational knowledge of investments and financial markets, before introducing you to more advanced topics, such as derivative securities and advanced financial modelling. The Otago Business School's Department of Accountancy & Finance offer the Master of Finance degree for students who wish to gain advanced financial skills and knowledge, while also enhancing their career prospects.

Key Information about the Master of Finance (MFinc):

  • 12 month (February to February) full time study.
  • Seven taught papers + either an applied or research project
  • Applicants with a mathematically oriented degree and normally have achieved an average grade of B+ in the papers satisfying the final year major subject requirement for that degree are encouraged to apply
  • Applicants with relevant practical experience may also be considered if the B+ average is not met

Master of Finance (MFinc)

The MFinc is a coursework masters degree consisting of taught papers and either an applied or research project, which will equip you to be either:

a) Professional practitioners in the field of Finance

b) Academic researchers in the discipline of Finance

The study options within the degree are designed to offer a number of pathways for you depending on your academic background and career aspirations. The primary pathway is for strong graduates of mathematically-oriented degrees such as mathematics and statistics, physics and economics to gain a finance qualification. This qualification is designed for people seeking a career in the finance industry or for financial specialists in non-financial firms.

As a graduate of the MFinc if you complete the Applied Project (BSNS 501) option you will have a wide range of career opportunities in commercial and investment banks, brokerage and investment firms, insurance companies, treasury departments of non-financial corporations, regulatory agencies, consulting and accounting firms. If on the other hand you complete the Research Project (BSNS 580) you will in addition have the ability to design and pursue a large project of independent research and consider MCom or even PhD in finance.

Degree Structure

The programme of study shall consist of seven 20 point taught papers together with a 40 point applied project or research project. Papers are either taught in semester one, semester two or are full-year papers.

You must complete seven of:
