Course details

The MClinRes will be delivered by blended learning, in one year full time or on a part time basis.

Pathways in this programme will include four core modules: applying evidence to practice, project design for research, applied qualitative research methods and applied quantitative research methods, as well as the research dissertation. Choose a 20 credit optional module from the diverse array on offer in the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences. The core modules build on each other providing skills in literature searching and implementing findings to the workplace; designing research protocols; understanding applied qualitative and quantitative methods and undertaking a clinically-relevant research project.

To gain a postgraduate certificate, you’ll need to earn 60 credits by studying three core modules worth 20 credits each. To gain a postgraduate diploma you will need to earn 120 credits by studying the four core modules, the optional module and an additional module from the MSc Advanced Professional Practice. To be awarded the full MClinRes masters, you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits - you’ll study the same modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 80 credits coming from your research dissertation.

The MClin Res programme will equip students with an in-depth understanding and knowledge and skills in a range of theoretical underpinnings and research methods relevant to applied research in a range of contemporary clinical practice contexts.

The programme is particularly aimed at qualified health professionals from a range of disciplines seeking a career in, or currently engaged in clinical research or wishing to pursue a variety of careers where research is a core component. The majority of modules within the course are shared with other students undertaking MSc and MPhil/PhD study.

The course is delivered mainly online but is complemented by two compulsory four-day campus-based introductory and winter study schools, and 1 mid-semester study day in both semester 1 and 2.

Aims

The MClin Res course is tailored to equip Nurses, Midwives, AHPs and other Non- Medical/Dental Healthcare Professionals with essential skills to manage and deliver research in clinical and health and social care settings, and to develop careers in clinical research, clinical and academic practice, or academic research with a strong clinical practice component. The aims of the course are to:
-Enable students to further develop systematic, in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of the nature, purposes, methods and application of research relevant to clinical practice at an individual and/or organisational level
-Contribute to building capacity and capability for research and evidence based practice by equipping students with in-depth knowledge and essential skills to critically appraise, apply, design and undertake high quality research in a range of clinical settings
-Enhance the quality and evidence base for clinical research, practice and service development through the provision of robust research training in a stimulating, challenging and supportive learning environment that draws on outstanding resources and research and practice expertise
-Promote lifelong learning in students and enhance their opportunities to pursue a variety of research careers and/or further research training which support and advance clinical knowledge, research and practice

Equip students with key transferable skills in critical reasoning and reflection, effective communication, team and multi-disciplinary working, use of IT/health informatics, logical and systematic approaches to problem-solving and decision-making.

The MClin Res programme has a unique interdisciplinary focus drawing on the expertise of nationally and internationally renowned lecturers and practitioners from many different fields including nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, social work, speech and language therapy, audiology, psychology and medicine.

The programme also benefits from strong collaborations across the Faculty and NHS including experts from the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) and the Manchester Academy for Healthcare Scientist Education (MAHSE).

Therefore the delivery of the programme within the context of outstanding multi-professional research expertise, well established partnerships with the NHS, excellent teaching and learning and high student support, means that students undertaking the programme can be assured of an excellent research education and training and an award of which they can be proud.

Teaching and learning

The programme is primarily delivered online to maximise access and increase flexibility. A variety of summative assessment methods are utilised which enable the integration of theory and practice and build on continuous formative assessment exercises which are part of each module with a variety of interactive, stimulating on-line exercises with regular self-assessment and feedback being a key feature.

Online components of the programme are complemented by opportunities for face-face learning and networking between students, programme and research staff through two 4-day campus-based introductory and winter study schools and 2 mid-semester study days.

Facilities

We are based in the Jean McFarlane building housing seminar rooms, IT facilities, clinical and interpersonal skills laboratories and lecture theatres.

The wider facilities of the University are of an excellent standard, with one of the best library collections and resources in Europe. We have extensive experience and good practice in online learning with dedicated e-learning technologists and rich online audio/video technologies.

We were one of the first institutions in the UK to develop a distributed learning PhD/MPhil programme undertaken by a wide range of health and social care practitioners from the UK and overseas.

This is an exciting research based programme of study specifically designed for the NIHR to develop research skills and academic careers for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, launching in February 2013.

Why study this course?
MSc Clinical Research Methods is the starting point for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals who wish to pursue a career as a clinical academic combining research with clinical practice.

How will I benefit from this course?
The programme provides clinical research training – which can then be used as the basis for a career in research, whether working towards a PhD or to provide an understanding of clinical research to underpin managerial positions in the NHS.

A bespoke masters degree
The course has been designed to be student - centred, providing the opportunity to shape learning to specific training needs and clinical settings. This is through tailoring assessments in modules, with the opportunity to set personal curriculum in one of the compulsory modules and a clinically focused research dissertation.

Flexible delivery
The programme will be delivered part-time over two years and full-time, over one year and most modules are delivered as full-day blocks. This allows students the opportunity to plan timetables in order to meet the competing demands of clinical practice and academic studies.

Specialist support
All students studying on the MSc in Clinical Research Methods will be allocated an academic supervisor who will assist students in identifying their academic training needs. They will assist on their personal development, incorporating promotion of reflection utilising a Personal Development Profile.

Students will also be supported by the programme manager will be their Personal Tutor.
Online support
We have developed an on-line research methods self assessment package which students can access flexibly on or off-campus. This allows students to take ownership of their learning, in particular to revisit prior learning where needed and build on new learning using self-regulated learning styles.

The study experience
Students will work and study in a research environment rated as ‘World Leading’ in the RAE, * alongside existing PhD scholars and Masters students in a challenging multi- professional environment in which to develop their learning and understanding of clinical research.
The MSc draws on expertise from the School of Healthcare (SoH) and the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS) with staff contributing across modules in areas of expertise.

Programme structure
This 120 credit programme comprises 60 credits of compulsory modules providing a foundation level of knowledge and skills (see tables). Next students are required to choose either Evidence Based Practice or Innovation and Evaluation (both 30 credit modules) and another 2 modules (15 credits each) from a list of options.

Students can choose modules relevant to their area of clinical practice and future career ambitions. This provides a total of 120 credits from taught options. To gain the MSc students will also need to complete a 12,000 word research dissertation worth a further 60 credits.

Join a vibrant community of clinicians at different stages on the NIHR funded clinical academic pathway - interns, doctoral and postdoctoral students and career development fellows. Including clinical research experience, you’ll experience supported development and implementation of a strategy for developing an application for an NIHR Doctoral Training Fellowship.
