The MSc Business & Management (MBM) is a 12-month full-time programme. The MBM is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA) as a Pre-Experience Masters in Management.
The degree provides you with a solid understanding of how organisations work. You’ll enhance the skills and awareness needed to operate effectively in different types of organisations. The MBM is an excellent choice as a path into business management. It’s also for those looking to gain a competitive edge in today’s job market.
The programme has consistently featured in the Financial Times global masters in management ranking.
The MBM is designed to help you reach your potential as a manager or leader in the organisations of today and tomorrow. We place emphasis on self-development and self-discovery, not just classroom teaching.
There are three areas of focus for study:
The MBM programme includes a number of elective classes from which students will choose. For those who are interested in studying abroad, the 'Managing in Europe' elective class provides the opportunity to do this with classes taught at Toulouse Business School, France.
The MBM is delivered in our award-winning building on Cathedral Street in the heart of Glasgow's city centre. Designed to meet the demands of corporate clients and those studying at a postgraduate level, it’s purpose-built to facilitate study, interaction and work.
A modern lecture room in the Business School building will be your base for the year. With good social space conveniently located next to where you’re taught, you’ll find this a comfortable area from which to work. There’s campus-wide Wi-Fi and good quality catering facilities nearby.
Our Business School provides a number of services including:
The School's Business Information Service ensures that you can keep up-to-date with the latest trends and issues affecting the business world. The databases available are a particularly powerful tool, providing a rich array of information including:
The MBM is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA) as a Pre-Experience Masters in Management.
As a graduate of the MBM, you’ll be offered the opportunity to convert your qualification to the prestigious Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.
To take advantage of this opportunity you must apply within five years of graduating and have acquired sufficient work experience and exposure to management processes and issues.
The conversion syllabus can be completed through any route of the MBA. That includes studying in Strathclyde Business School’s centres around the world and the flexible learning option. Most people choose to undertake the conversion while continuing their career by undertaking self-study supported by weekend workshops.
For those who started their MBM after September 2010, the conversion syllabus is:
Conversion generally takes 18 months on a part-time basis.
Classes differ significantly from traditional formal lectures. Academic staff maximise opportunities for class discussion and debate about how organisations are tackling real-life business issues and whether their approaches are appropriate in other contexts.
You’ll often be given individual or group-based research tasks to be fed back in class. This emphasis upon practical skills gives you a greater understanding of what’s happening in a wide range of organisational contexts. It also helps you to be able to formulate relevant, practical, responses to the complex issues.
Our teaching is focused on helping you to develop the high level of personal and interpersonal skills that employers are looking for. You’ll find that, from your very first day, we’ll be there helping you to find effective ways to manage yourself, while getting the best from those you're working with.
Through workshops, and in classes, we’ll help you to perfect your ability to communicate the insights you get from the analytical techniques we teach and the research you undertake.
The Living case study is an innovative way of bringing participants to an understanding of what it means to deal with organisational issues at a managerial level. The exercise casts participants in the role of a graduate trainee who has been asked by the management director to analyse the behaviours in the company and present to the board a way forward.
Management consultancy firm Accenture regularly attend the final presentations. These presentations showcase the professionalism of the cohort and the analytic skills they have acquired through this and the other classes that make up the syllabus. Accenture’s experienced consultants recognise the type of issues and behaviours recreated in the simulation and provide hints and tips on dealing with problem situations and communicating ideas to executives.
The course is assessed through written assignments, group and individual projects, exams and presentations.
This one-year masters degree provides a truly transformative business education that will take your career to new heights.
The MBM will give you a comprehensive understanding of the fast-paced global business environment, and prepare you to take on a wide range of management and leadership roles.
It's designed for graduates of any bachelor's degree – from arts and engineering to teaching and social sciences – who wish to expand their career prospects and increase their earning potential. Previous business experience is not required.
Over 12 months, you'll hone your skills in all aspects of business: planning for strategic growth, marketing, digital business, economics, financial analysis, human resources, global business, supply chain management, design thinking and innovation, and commercial law.
You'll also develop strong communication and problem solving skills; gain the ability to undertake business research and analyse data, question ideas and findings; and build the confidence to lead teams and manage organisational change.
Throughout the MBM degree, you'll become aware of your own abilities as a future business leader or entrepreneur. Your learning experience is designed to be practical, challenging, and inspiring.
You'll work in teams to develop ideas for a start-up business, and then pitch your business plan to a group of senior executives.
Students also undertake a one-month internship at a local business, while completing an Action Learning Project that delivers real value to the company. We organise all internships on your behalf, across a wide range of industries.
Learning is through classroom lectures, analysing case studies, practical group assignments, video, social media, creative problem solving and reflective learning.
Study this degree at Waikato Management School, a Triple Crown international business school accredited by EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB since 2005. This is a global benchmark of excellence in teaching and research, achieved by less than 1% of the world's business schools.
You can start the MBM programme in either March or November.
Waikato Management School has a vibrant student culture and provides a supportive learning environment, with ready access to mentors who have graduated from the MBM.
Working with other students from diverse cultural backgrounds will help you establish a strong network of local and international business contacts.
Throughout the course, you’ll be invited to take part in many fun social and cultural activities to help you bond with your classmates – such as hiking up a mountain for the day!
The MSc in Business & Management (MBM) will develop the managerial knowledge and skills needed to excel in today’s organizations. The program will prepare you to proficiently act and to make decisions in highly uncertain and complex environments.
These contexts require innovative marketing campaigns, new product development processes, transformation projects, dynamic strategies and organizations. These are fundamental means for both nascent entrepreneurial ventures and established corporations that strive to maintain their edge through ongoing renewal.
The MBM program is based on a live pedagogy, where most of the learning occurs through real-life projects, internships and practical experience. You will work with real challenges faced by real stakeholders, who expect sound analyses and actionable solutions. These outcomes will be achieved by putting into action the theories and methods learned in class. Running in parallel to the courses, a skills track focusing on personal and social development will nurture your ability to manage yourself and the people around you.
The core curriculum of the program builds on the academic disciplines of management and marketing. These disciplines offer vital tools for next-generation managers who need to combine creativity and innovative thinking with market analyses and communication strategies, to manage projects and drive change within and across organizations, and to integrate knowledge from different fields and social networks.
The MBM program offers an intimate learning environment that stimulates critical thinking, open debate, developmental feedback, close relationships, and fruitful contacts that will remain useful throughout each student’s future career. The faculty is passionately committed to each student’s learning: they bring to class the academic rigor of their research together with concrete insights on contemporary business issues, stemming from their ongoing conversation with various stakeholders.
All in all, the program rests on a vision of future leaders who are creative, entrepreneurial, reflective, and responsible. The challenges linked to global sustainability offer tremendous opportunities to such leaders. If you aim to be one of them, the MBM is the right path to realize your ambitions.

A set of core modules will give you a foundation in aspects of business such as human resource management, corporate finance and international business. Once you’ve gained these new skills you’ll test them in a safe environment through live challenges setting up new ventures, taking on consultancy work and even experiencing the boardroom.
Taught by experienced practitioners and world-leading researchers in intensive teaching blocks, this programme will stretch your abilities and challenge how you think and act in business.
You’ll benefit from the expertise and support of several major research centres. The School boasts the UK’s premier research centre in international business, the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds (CIBUL) led by Professor Peter Buckley OBE and our Global and Strategic Marketing Research Centre is led by one of the UK’s foremost professors of marketing, Professor Costas Katsikeas.
Given Leeds’ position as a financial services hub, it’s not surprising that our academics working through our International Institute for Banking and Financial Services, and the Credit Management Research Centre, are among the most respected in the UK. As organisations and the nature of work change in an ultracompetitive marketplace, specialists from our Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change work with employers and staff to develop effective working practices.
The Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Studies at the University of Leeds is the focal point for enterprise research on campus and supports business start-ups through SPARK.
You’ll also come across plenty of opportunities to build your professional network, and your project work will bring you into contact with some of our many industrial partners. We have extensive relationships with Marks & Spencer, IBM, Yorkshire Bank, Asda-Walmart, Lloyds Banking Group, KPMG, Accenture and the NHS, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, charities and social enterprises.
This programme is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), the international impartial authority on postgraduate business education, representing the global standard for all MBA, DBA and MBM programmes. Membership allows graduates to network with each other and access job vacancies, careers support, CPD events and more. Find out more about AMBA accreditation.
The course begins with an online pre-induction programme and the on-site induction takes place in October. This is an opportunity to meet the MBA team, academic staff and brush up on study skills. During the induction you are introduced to the Leading Change module, which runs alongside your core and option modules throughout the programme.
To complement and enhance your studies you will undertake three live challenges that allow you to test your new skills and knowledge in a safe environment. You’ll develop a business plan for a new business, take on consultancy work for an external organisation and simulate a board room situation.
The course culminates with either your MBA Project, where you’ll undertake independent research – you could even focus on a topic of direct relevance to your own organisation - or your choice of two optional modules. You also have the opportunity to take part in an optional international study tour.
In Year Two you’ll take four compulsory modules, as well as studying 30 credits of optional modules.
The Leeds Executive MBA is flexible enough so you can fit it in around your work, whilst giving you time away from the office to fully focus on your studies. It’s delivered in intensive three day blocks Thursday to Saturday, every six weeks with a few modules delivered over four days, Thursday to Sunday. Most teaching takes place at our executive conference facility, Weetwood Hall.
The majority of assessment is by work-based assignments, allowing you to develop a more strategic understanding of your organisation by focusing your work on a specific management problem or issue.
MBA students have the opportunity to take part in a one or two-week international study tour.
Typically we try and offer a variety of trips in any year to a European and/or American University. You’ll have the chance to visit local companies and partner business schools, enjoy business seminars and networking opportunities with local students, businesses and leaders and still have time to explore the culture, history and sights of the region.
If you are looking to develop yourself and your career then the Executive MBA is the ideal choice in helping you achieve these goals. It will provide the opportunity for you to:
