Description

Study for an MBA Banking and Finance Master's Degree at one of Europe's foremost Banking and Finance Schools. At Bangor, we offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in the areas of banking and finance. The MBA Banking and Finance is designed for candidates with degrees or relevant business backgrounds, who wish to develop their expertise and further their professional careers. The MBA programme provides a more practical postgraduate course to complement our long established MA course in Banking and Finance and our distance-learning MBA with Manchester Business School.

A primary objective of the MBA Banking and Finance is to develop knowledgeable and capable executives to move quickly to key positions in the financial services sector. The programme will provide executive training at an advanced level covering the latest developments in the management of banks and financial services firms.

We have long held a strong international reputation in the study of banking and finance. Our long established and highly successful MA programme has run since 1973 and over this period we have also had a strong PhD programme where research typically focuses on banking and financial sector issues. Postgraduates have enjoyed a mix of both theoretical and practical elements covering contemporary developments in the banking and financial field. The MBA aims to extend and develop advanced training relating to the practical managerial issues faced by modern financial service firms.

The main aim of our full-time MBA is to introduce a much stronger practical emphasis focussing on the strategies and financial management of financial firms. Your MBA will give you practical insight and skills in a range of strategic and management areas in financial services. We invite practitioners to share their views and experiences. Case studies and contemporary issues figure highly in the programme.

The School has a lively group of staff, who are always willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Your teaching staff at Bangor are active researchers, combining high levels of expertise with a desire to extend their subject area, and, most importantly from a postgraduate viewpoint, an enthusiasm to encourage others to develop their academic, financial and business skills.

We are pleased that you are considering joining the MBA Banking and Finance programme. If you decide to do so, we are confident that we can offer you the guidance, stimulation and support that will make the next year a happy and productive time for you. I wish you every success in your MBA career.

Professor Philip Molyneux
Postgraduate Director

Why study the MBA Banking and Finance?

Financial systems and financial services firms' strategies are now involved in a fundamental, far reaching process of realignment and change. The strategic priority of banks and other financial institutions has shifted away from growth and size alone towards a greater emphasis on profitability, performance and shareholder value creation. The growing economic importance of financial sectors has also re-emphasised that bankers, fund managers, multinational companies, securities firms, regulators and financial advisers must have a clear understanding of the theory and practice relating to banking and finance.

Aims of the course

The Bangor Business School aims to build on our long-established expertise in the area of postgraduate training in banking and finance by offering a one-year modular MBA Banking and Finance, which aims to develop participants' academic and managerial skills in these areas. An important objective is to provide relevant analytical training to familiarise participants with the latest strategic, managerial and industrial developments in the financial services industry.

The MBA Banking and Finance course provides a coherent analytical framework for the study of banking and financial developments from a management perspective. The emphasis throughout the programme is on the application of contemporary, financial, managerial and strategic developments that affect real-world decision-making in the global financial industry.

We recognise that a thorough understanding of recent developments in banking and financial firm strategies, financial management, risk management, international financial markets, marketing strategies and performance evaluation are essential requirements for all those involved in financial sector activities (or those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of these important business and managerial areas).

Who should consider studying the MBA Banking and Finance?

The course will be of interest to the following people:

Graduates who have professional experience in the financial sector;
Managers and accountants in public and private organisations who wish to develop their financial management skills;
Managers employed in the financial services industry;
Graduates contemplating a career in the banking and financial services industry;
Graduates who have relevant practical experience and wish to enhance their skills in the areas of banking and finance;
Finance professionals (like corporate treasurers and accountants) who deal with the financial services industry.

A part-time MBA is now also available. The Brunel MBA part-time programme is designed to maximise your career impact in the global market over a 2 year study period, without having to take a break from work. Indicative study patterns for the part-time MBA are 12 hours per week over a maximum of three days (with some classes on Saturdays), making the programme an ideal option for full-time working professionals in and around London.

Practical Learning

Brunel MBA students benefit from rigorous corporate exposure designed to build global professional advantage throughtout the programme.

A rich calendar of internal and external events and training allows students to get the most of their MBA by activities such as annual international business tours, visits to companies in the UK, networking with companies on campus, Employee Best Practice Competencies training workshops, Business Games and Simulations, high-profile corporate guest speakers, showcase events to present student work to global companies, on-campus recruitment fairs, and many more.

Aims

The Brunel MBA recruits managers and other professionals of high calibre who can both benefit from and contribute to an intellectually challenging management programme.

Choosing the General Management specialisation can help students to become a better manager all-round – from corporate business finance to international strategy, from harnessing IT technology to marketing. Students gain a more informed output into senior management decision making or consultancy within the industry. This General Management specialisation focuses on giving students the skills of practical application of knowledge to solving contemporary business issues, identifying your strengths and weaknesses, maximizing your assets and turning them into a more profitable future.

The Aviation Management specialised MBA is deeply rooted in the Aviation industry and informed by extensive cutting-edge aviation research. It is designed for professionals working for airlines, airports authorities and supply and support services within the aviation sector such as engineers, logistics, catering, cargo, energy, safety, security, IT and travel and tourism. It is supported by our proximity to the world’s busiest passenger hub at Heathrow, Brunel’s growing reputations in aerospace and environmental research, and our close links with the aviation industry.

The Healthcare Management specialised MBA is focused on application of knowledge in the Healthcare industry and enables students to develop managerial skills to handle real-life business situations in the sector. The MBA (Healthcare Management) award is designed for professionals in strategic health authorities, primary care trusts and hospital administration, and for those working in the growing number of private health contractors, outside suppliers and consultancies.

Course Content

The richness of the Brunel MBA curriculum is based on the key business concepts that can help managers and CEOs alike to develop the expertise required to lead and manage in the international business context.

The highly commended Leadership Master Class Series and the Career Development Programme combined with over 500 hours of student-tutor direct (teaching) contact hours successfully maintain the balance between theory and practise and reflect the school’s ambitions for its graduates.

The Brunel MBA academic component comprises core modules, followed by elective modules in General Management, Healthcare or Aviation and is crowned by a Business Project.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment, or an examination.
Coursework and examinations place considerable stress on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.
The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design and execute a major project.

Career Coaching

As part of the MBA students receive advice on all aspects of career planning, including reassessment of their true strengths and weaknesses. This aspect of the MBA programme is invaluable to students who, having worked in managerial roles for a number of years may now wish to evaluate their experience to date and progress their careers into the future.

Programme description

The full-time MBA is an intensive programme designed for students with a minimum of three years' managerial experience who wish to progress to more senior and leadership roles in business.

The programme immerses students in a world of academic thought, current business practice and applied projects.

Studied over 12 months, this is a taught programme delivered by world class faculty complemented by guest business practitioners.

Successful businesses in the future will be those that can confidently and capably steer a path through a world characterised by intense competition, rapid technological development, economic turbulence and increasing resource insecurity.

Businesses need leaders who can think and act strategically in this volatile environment, managing the risk and challenges involved, but also spotting and seizing opportunities for efficiency, innovation and new business models. Businesses also need leaders who will act responsibly in delivering value to all stakeholders.

The Edinburgh MBA will prepare participants to progress with confidence into leadership roles in this new world. We will:

  • deepen participants’ understanding of how businesses and markets work, how value is created through innovation and marketing, how strategies are crafted, how businesses are financed, how performance is measured, how value is delivered efficiently and effectively, and how organisations should be governed, managed and led through change
  • instil a passion for business improvement, innovation and entrepreneurial action to help participants lead in the growth or creation of new business opportunities
  • develop participants’ ability to think strategically and beyond disciplinary silos

Successful leadership also requires accomplished interpersonal skills to bring about change in organisations. Through skills training and professional development, we will work with participants to understand their leadership strengths and weaknesses and provide support for improvement.

Programme structure

The MBA is delivered full-time starting in September each year. The programme combines intensive academic study with practical application. This is achieved both in the classroom through case studies, but also via consultancy-style projects with external organisations to broaden participants’ insights into alternative business models and approaches.

Compulsory courses include:

  • Strategic Leadership
  • Strategic Marketing
  • Organising for Effectiveness
  • Operations Improvement
  • Understanding Economies
  • Finance
  • Accounting
  • Qualitative Methods and Tools
  • Entrepreneurial Leadership
  • Creative Strategy
  • Research Methods for the Capstone Project
  • Professional Development Programme

A range of specialist options are also available. In parallel with academic study, we deliver a Professional Development programme to help enhance interpersonal and leadership skills. Your studies will culminate in a major Capstone Project.

On our core 12-month MBA, there is an opportunity to study International Business in Context (a one-week intensive module located in an emerging market) and to undertake your Capstone Project focused on a country outside of the UK. For those who want further international experience, there is an opportunity to study on our MBA (within international exchange) which will give you the chance to spend 2-3 months on an exchange at one of our international partner Universities (Australia, Canada, China, Finland, France, Mexico, Spain and USA).

12-month MBA

The programme is delivered in four parts:

  • September–December: students focus on core business disciplines
  • January–March: students develop integrative and strategic thinking, and choose a number of specialist elective subjects
  • April–June: students' specialisation continues
  • June–August: students undertake a Capstone Project as the final part of the 12-month MBA
  • Details of programme structure and elective courses

12-month MBA (International Business)

The MBA (with International Exchange) programme is delivered in four parts:

  • September–March: students study the same core disciplines, integrating courses and a number of specialisations as the main MBA programme
  • April–June: students study abroad at one of 12 partner institutions worldwide, experiencing new cultures and new ways of business
  • June–August: students undertake a Capstone Project as the final part of the 12-month MBA.
  • Details of programme structure and elective courses

Learning outcomes

Students will develop an integrated understanding of the essential aspects of business and leadership skills as well as the development of specialist knowledge through the choice of option courses and MBA Capstone project research.

Recently introduced is the option of a specialisation route consisting of taking two options and the MBA Capstone Project in a specific area of focus. Students will have their specialisations recognised with a Business School Certificate in Finance, Entrepreneurship, Strategy or Sustainability. Specialisations must be agreed in advance with the programme team.

The personal development programme ensures that, alongside the in-depth business learning, students will also develop the personal skills and characteristics required by senior managers in the modern business setting.

For those following the MBA (with international exchange), the study abroad period will add an international dimension to their studies, valuable to all who work internationally.

Career opportunities

The employment market is highly competitive, but the Edinburgh MBA is distinctive and will provide participants with a competitive edge. MBA participants will engage in a leadership and professional development programme that includes personal diagnostics, career planning and skills enhancement designed explicitly to support participants in their pursuit of promotion or new careers.

The Bradford Distance Learning MBA allows you to study at a time, place and pace to suit you.

This programme is ideal if you need to combine work and family commitments with your business management studies, giving you the flexibility to complete your MBA in two to six years.

This flexibility means that you can fit your learning around your work and home commitments, and complete the MBA at a pace to suit you, in anything from two to six years. If you are using the government’s Postgraduate Loan to fund your studies, you will need to complete the MBA in no more than two years (see the Fees and Financial Support section for more details).

You’ll join an international network of over 500 distance-learning students, which means you’ll never be studying alone. Students get all the benefits of being part of a leading business school with access to our unique online learning, careers and support services from around the world.

About our partner RDI

University of Bradford School of Management administers its distance learning MBA programmes alongside RDI. RDI is responsible for the initial stages of student application and admission onto the Bradford Distance Learning MBA programmes in specific territories.

Please note: In August 2015, RDI achieved university status resulting in a name change from Resource Development International Ltd to Arden University Ltd. However, the organisation is aware of the high esteem in which RDI is held by students worldwide and so the RDI name will continue as part of Arden University.

Professional Accreditation

The Financial Times has placed the University of Bradford School of Management's Distance Learning MBA in the world's top 10 in its Online MBA Ranking 2015.

We are in an elite group of less than 1% of business schools in the world to hold the triple accreditations of Equis, AMBA and AACSB.

Why Bradford?

The Bradford Distance Learning MBA is ranked by the Financial Times as one of the world's best online MBA programmes (World No.8) and rated No.1 in the world for alumni career progression.

The programme is aimed at intelligent, highly motivated managers who wish to equip themselves with the essential business and management skills required in the increasingly competitive, diverse and dynamic business environment.

As with all our MBAs, we offer students the flexibility to switch between modes of study. Distance learning students can choose to take certain modules alongside Full-time and Executive Part-time students in Bradford or at one of our partner institutions across our global campus. There is also flexibility in terms of how intensively you study. We advise that you study two modules every three months, tackling one unit per week – approximately 14-16 hours of study. However, if you are restricted on time, you can choose to just study one module at a time or even suspend your studies all together and restart at a later date.

While distance learning allows you to study at a time, place and pace to suit your needs we ensure that you will never feel like you are studying alone. Distance Learning MBA students have access to our Virtual Learning Environment and are provided with a variety of materials from textbooks and academic journal papers through to video clips and podcasts for each module. You are also expected to contribute to online discussion forums and tutorials with your tutor group and can network with staff and students our online social networking site - The Atrium.

Although studying largely independently, Distance Learning MBA students get all the benefits of being at a leading international business school and gaining a globally recognised qualification. You will also get access to all of our learning, careers and support services as well as our online library and academic expertise.

Rankings

Financial Times rankings for the School of Management:
-Our Distance Learning MBA ranked 11th in the world, 3rd in the UK in Online MBA rankings
-Our Distance Learning MBA is also ranked 1st in the world for salary increase (percentage) and 2nd in the world for value for money

Modules

Core modules - You will study 10 core modules covering key business and managerial disciplines.

-Managerial and Professional Development
-Business Ethics and Sustainability

-Business Simulation
-Circular Economy, Core Principles and Concepts

-E-business
-Entrepreneurship
-European Business Management
-Financial Risk Management in European Banking

Students who choose to take an elective module(s) in Bradford or at one of our partner institutions will have a wider range of choices, including modules such as Mergers and Acquisitions, Management Consulting and Global Supply Chain Management. Up to three modules may be taken in this way at no extra cost.

The management project is an integral part of the Bradford MBA and is often the most challenging and rewarding part of the programme. At the end of the taught programme you put into practice what you have learnt by investigating and reporting on an important management issue or opportunity. If you are sponsored by your employer, the project can relate to your workplace.

Otherwise, you may choose to use the project to deepen your knowledge of a different sector or organisation, or as a stepping stone to your next job. The project findings and recommendations are then written up in a 9,000-word dissertation.

Throughout the project you will be guided by an experienced academic and you will have access to the School of Management Effective Learning department. The Effective Learning service often proves to be very useful providing students with a clear understanding and guidelines on what is required in order to successfully complete their project.

Learning activities and assessment

Students are expected to take two subjects (modules) every three months.

Each module contains nine study units. Students typically progress by studying one unit from each module per week. This equates to approximately 14-16 hours of study per week. If you don't think that you have enough time to study two modules over the three month period you can always chose to study just one module, lightening your workload considerably.

If work or family life is particularly busy then you can even suspend your studies and restart at a later date. This flexibility means that students can complete a distance learning MBA in 2 to 6 years. We do however strongly advise that students study two modules every three months.

Study Abroad

You may decide you want to accelerate your studies, learn about a particular subject area, study alongside other University of Bradford School of Management students or simply broaden your horizons and spend some time studying overseas. You can do this by undertaking up to three block modules (i.e. 3-5 days of intensive study) at no extra cost (other than travel, accommodation and subsistence) at the School of Management or at any one of our partner institutions in Dubai and Singapore.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

An MBA is an opportunity to either change career direction or consolidate experience then return and progress in a previous industry or job. The Financial Times Global MBA rankings show that, on average, 20% of alumni achieve board-level positions within three years of graduation.

On completion of the programme participants go into a wide variety of functions and sectors, including IT/Telecoms, Finance & Banking and Industry being amongst the most popular.

An MBA challenges how you think and act in business. Employers want more from their managers than knowledge and strategic thinking – they also seek leadership skills, commitment and creativity. The Leeds MBA equips you to meet these challenges.

This top global MBA programme (Financial Times Top 100 Global MBA Ranking, 2016) integrates business and management theory with practice, but also emphasises your personal and professional development. You’ll study the foundations of business such as marketing, accounting, finance, operations and human resource management.

Importantly, you’ll also gain key qualities expected of leaders including commercial awareness, interpersonal skills, a genuine understanding of the fundamental business functions and a critical and questioning outlook.

You’ll apply what you’ve learned to examine significant business issues in a set of live challenges working with a range of external organisations. You’ll gain an international outlook and build valuable connections, helping you become a global leader.

Academic excellence, professional focus

You’ll benefit from the expertise and support of several major research centres. The Business School boasts the UK’s premier research centre in international business, the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds (CIBUL) led by Professor Peter Buckley OBE and our Global and Strategic Marketing Research Centre (GLOSMARC) is led by one of the UK’s foremost professors of marketing, Professor Constantine Katsikeas.

Given Leeds’ position as a financial services hub, it’s not surprising that our academics working through our Institute for Banking and Investment, and the Credit Management Research Centre, are among the most respected in the UK. As organisations and the nature of work change in an ultracompetitive marketplace, specialists from our Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change work with employers and staff to develop effective working practices.

If you’re thinking of starting your own business, you’ll also benefit from the support of Spark – our specialist team will be there to support and encourage you in turning your business idea into a reality.

You’ll also come across plenty of opportunities to build your professional network, and your project work will bring you into contact with some of our many industry partners. We have extensive relationships with Marks & Spencer, IBM, Yorkshire Bank, Asda-Walmart, Lloyds Banking Group, KPMG, Accenture and the NHS, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, charities and social enterprises.

Accreditation

The Leeds MBA is accredited by the Association of MBAs.

Course content

Through a variety of taught modules, you’ll gain an understanding of the key components of business management – marketing, accounting, finance, operations and human resource management. Alongside these subjects we explore how to manage and lead people in organisations. You’ll also have the option to take part in one of our international study tours.

You’ll build and apply your skills as you complete live challenges in two of your modules. One of these exciting projects allows you to generate ideas for new commercial opportunities and turn them into viable business plans, either for an existing organisation or in a start-up. The other gives you the chance to provide consultancy support to an external business, social enterprise or voluntary sector organisation.

The course culminates in your MBA Project, giving you the opportunity to turn your knowledge into practice that relates to your own ambitions. Your project can be desk-based if you want to research a topic in-depth, or you can work on a live management issue with an external organization to develop links with employers and industry. WHAT ARE THE KEY STRENGTHS OF THIS PROGRAM?

The MBA offers a 500 hour general management program in a triple-accredited International Business School.
The Grenoble Graduate School of Business MBA is highly applied in content, delivered by a team that brings together academic specialists together with managers and consultants from a wide range of sectors.

PROGRAM DELIVERY: FULL-TIME STRUCTURE

The course modules are taught over one academic year from September to the end of June.
The class sessions take place on a regular basis from Monday to Friday. Upon successful completion of these modules, participants will begin their Final Management Project. Students normally work part- or full-time during this phase. The choice of location for the project is entirely the student's own.

Foreign Language classes: the Full-Time delivery includes optional foreign language, especially French.

Program

PHASE 1 CORE COURSES

The program is a balanced and challenging one, equipping participants with numerical and analytical skills, communication and interpersonal skills, plus insights into current managerial issues in geopolitics, macroeconomics and governance. Through regular group work on cases and individual assignments on management dilemmas, students will develop their expertise in budgetary and financial management as well as in people management. Strategic analysis and Negotiations skills are developed through face-to-face team negotiations to resolve authentic and complex cases.

Personal Development Week in Grenoble Each Year -

Students from each campus are invited to attend this week together, enabling students from 4 centers to network and to attend seminars and conferences together on key management questions. Topics covered typically include Conflict Resolution, Interview Techniques, Radical Career Change, Salary Negotiations, and Effective Leadership.

Global Management Challenge -

The Global Management Challenge simulation is one of the highlights of the core courses. Small teams of MBA students will compete in a complex management simulation against leading business and engineering schools, firstly in France followed by international play-offs in the final rounds. The decision-making is intense and the experience is a roller-coaster ride of changing share price, volatile business environments, and exchanges - often heated! - with fellow team members.

In 2016 all full-time Grenoble students will visit Barcelona, Spain for the International Human Resources module.

PHASE 2 SPECIALIZATIONS

From a menu of up to 8 alternative choices, students can personalize their MBA program for 20% of their total class sessions. The content is focused on professional management activity, such as Management Consulting, or management in a range of functional areas. For many participants, the specialization choice will also determine the focus of the Final Management Project: for example, choosing a Finance elective can lead directly to a project in the area of Finance.

PHASE 3 FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

During this phase, program participants are free to locate to anywhere in the world and to complete their projects while pursuing professional activity. The Project is an opportunity that different students use in different ways. A Full-Time student may use the project to demonstrate value and capabilities to a potential employer. For some students, ideas for entrepreneurial ventures can be assessed before the start-up is launched.

CNCP RECOGNITION

Students graduating from the MBA also receive a certificate conferring them the title of Manager International. This title, recognized by the Commission Nationale de la Certification Professionnelle - an agency belonging to the French Ministry of Labor - attests to the successful acquisition of a core of international management skills and knowledge necessary for future roles as managers in an international context. The Manager International label is registered on the Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles at Level 1, the highest level for such certification.
