Our three-year MSc (Clin) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery course enables dentists to train in the specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

All units are based on the speciality of oral surgery, but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery. You will undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia. You will also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery and attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.

The clinical component of the course consists of units covering surgical basic sciences, reflective oral surgery practices, dental tissues, bone disease and injury, soft tissues, and salivary tissue, pain and the temporomandibular joint.

You will attend weekly interactive seminars led by senior staff and invited guest speakers. Some of these have actor patients present to allow you to rehearse your clinical skills.

If you study the full three-year MSc, you will also attend external teaching events such as residential blocks for basic science applied to surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

You will become eligible to sit the Royal College of Surgeons examinations for Membership in Oral Surgery on completion of this MSc course.

Aims

The course aims to:

  • provide dental practitioners with the knowledge and skills to undertake oral surgery in the context of wider knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery;
  • provide you with the appropriate knowledge, understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills and attitude to practice oral surgery in selected cases;
  • enable you to carry out critical evaluation, problem solving and use sound judgement for clinical problems;
  • give you the knowledge to criticalyl understand the issues involved in the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery;
  • ensure you are competent in the design and interpretation of original clinical research at the forefront of current dental research (including data collection and statistical analysis using appropriate computer software);
  • provide you with the knowledge and experience to plan, implement and complete a research project showing initiative and personal responsibility.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is by essay and SBAs throughout the course and related to the taught units. You will also maintain a clinical surgical logbook and undertake a clinical competency test. There is also an oral examination.

  • Research Methods: Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor marked assignments.
  • Biostatistics: Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor marked assignments.
  • Clinical component: This is assessed by written examination and clinical examination in the form of an oral presentation.
  • Dissertation (10,000-15,000 words).

Research Methods Component (15 credits): The aim is to equip you with skills related to design, execution and interpretation of clinical and clinically-related research.

Biostatistics component (15 credits): This unit aims to equip you with skills in data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Specialist Clinical Component: The aim of this component is to give you an understanding of the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients.

Our one-year MSc Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery course is designed for dentists who wish to advance their knowledge of this clinical specialty at postgraduate level.

This specialty is concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

The specialist clinical component of the course will give you an understanding of the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of patients. The course will also emphasise the evidence base supporting clinical surgical practice.

You will observe a wide range of surgery, including facial trauma, implant and reconstructive, cancer and reconstructive, salivary gland and orthognathic surgery, as well as participating in dentoalveolar surgery.

The course also covers the design, data collection, and simple analysis and interpretation of clinical research projects, and culminates in the MSc dissertation. You will learn how to identify, formulate and implement a specific research project in line with the research themes of pain and anxiety control, surgical implantology, or oral cancer and health services research.

Teaching and learning

Our teaching and learning methods are designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to integrate work with formal educational activities.

Employability

On completion of their studies, some graduates undertake senior house officer posts in UK teaching hospitals and take the opportunity to progress through specialist training posts to become NHS hospital consultants. Overseas graduates may return to their home country to continue their specialist training. Our MSc Dental Implantology (Dental Specialties) course gives dental practitioners the knowledge and skills needed to replace missing teeth and support oral tissues with dental implants.

This course is ideal for dentists with a range of experience, from those new to the discipline to those with considerable implant exposure.

You will develop the requisite knowledge and skills to undertake implant surgery and prosthodontic reconstruction with predictable long-term success while studying a comprehensive range of course units.

You will complete a five-day foundation course at Manchester Dental Education Centre (MANDEC) in July. This ensures that you possess foundation knowledge before starting the MSc in September.

During the MSc, you will complete five cases and go on surgical placements where you will receive one-to-one mentoring from an experienced implant surgeon.

You will also attend a two-day cadaver course run by the Royal College of Surgeons and local consultants, and travel to an implant company teaching centre in Sweden for two days to receive teaching from well-established international contributors. In Year 2, you are required to attend lectures and clinical attachments on a fortnightly basis. Lectures take place at the University itself, while clinical attachments take place at private clinics off campus.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is via written exams, essays, case presentations and viva voce.

The PGCert, PGDip and MSc courses run in succession. The PGCert offers a foundation in implantology, and the PGDip builds on this, offering a diverse range of contemporary experiences and techniques.

A research dissertation is required for the MSc qualification, many of which are published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Unit assessment methods include:

  • Research Methods: two tutor-marked assignments and participation in specified online group activities;
  • Biostatistics: two tutor-marked assignments;
  • Dissertation: an independent research project with a written report of 10,000-15,000 words.

There are four components to the course:

Research Methods unit: Training in skills related to the design, execution and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Biostatistics unit:  Training in skills in data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Specialist Clinical units:  Gain an understanding of the scientific basis of implantology, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients.

Completion of the first year provides the 60 credits needed for the Dental Implantology PGCert.

Year 2 course content

  • Advanced Implant Surgical and Restorative Techniques (15 credits)
  • Research Methods and Biostatistics (15 credits each)

Completion of Year 1 plus Research Methods and Advanced Implant Sciences provides the 120 credits needed for the Dental Implantology PGDip.

  • Research project and dissertation (60 credits) : For MSc students only. You will have a supervisor who will discuss the choice of research project and give advice and guidance throughout. Dissertation areas include the writing of a systematic review in any field of implant dentistry or lab-based research projects.

Completion of Years 1 and 2 provide the 180 credits needed for the Dental Implantology MSc.

Your role should encompass the provision of care and appropriate intervention within the perioperative environment, on wards and/or in clinics (usually within a specified surgical specialty).

What will I study?

Initially, you will be given a broad overview of surgical practice, covering areas such as clinical examination and diagnostic tests. You will also study and practice first assistant skills, basic surgical skills, and generic surgical care practice skills (including all of the pre, intra and post-operative patient phases). Research and leadership skills in relation to the role of a surgical care practitioner are also introduced and discussed.

In the second half of the programme, you will undertake a specialist negotiated module which will be tailored to your specific specialist practice requirements. For instance, if you work for an orthopaedic team then the module will be tailored to the specific requirements of that team, potentially considering themes such as understanding the pathophysiology of joint disease and strategies for their treatment, the use of implants in elective orthopaedic surgery and in relation to specific orthopaedic procedures, and knowledge of available options and surgical techniques.

A dissertation module focuses on a clinical project that will demonstrate leadership and innovation in a specific clinical issue.

How will I study?

The programme incorporates a blend of face-to-face study, independent learning and time spent working in practice. Delivery is at St James' in Manchester, although some face-to-face sessions and/or examinations may be undertaken at Edge Hill University.

For the time spent in university, the first half of the course will be delivered through block-weeks of face-to-face sessions. Eight block-weeks of face-to-face sessions will take place in the first year. Some reading time will be incorporated into these eight weeks to help you plan for the assessment and submission of work.

In the second half of the programme, there is a greater focus on independent learning. However, some face-to-face sessions will be planned and there will also be an attendance requirement for assessments.

Throughout the programme, you will undertake training in your place of employment, working alongside the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe and effective care to patients in the perioperative environment, on the wards and in the clinics both pre and post-operatively.

A minimum of 33.5 hours per week, for approximately 37 weeks, will be spent working in practice.The national curriculum requires a minimum of 2,200 hours over the two years in combined clinical activities in and out of the theatre environment. A minimum of 1,100 hours has to be spent in the operating theatre environment.

In addition to the above, a half-day per week will be built into your annual timetable to facilitate self-directed learning and engagement with Edge Hill University’s virtual learning environment.

How will I be assessed?

In university, assessments will take the form of essays, written case studies, viva voce (oral) examinations, written examinations and observed structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

In practice, you will be assessed using a variety of techniques, including:

- The Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS), where you will perform a specific practical procedure that is directly observed;

- Case-based Discussion (CbD), requiring the evaluation of your performance in the management of a patient. This will provide an indication of your competence in areas such as clinical reasoning, decision-making and the application of medical knowledge in relation to patient care;

- Clinical Evaluation Exercise (CEX), where a clinical encounter with a patient is evaluated to provide an indication of your competence in skills essential for outstanding clinical care.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by tutors from the Faculty of Health and Social Care who have the experience and expertise to deliver the applied elements of this MSc via lessons, seminars and discussions. In addition, teaching will be provided by associate lecturers who are either medically qualified, or employed as qualified surgical care practitioners.

You will require a mentor who must be a consultant surgeon for the practice elements of the programme, although it is expected that you will work with a variety of staff within the surgical team. This may include, for example, other consultant surgeons, registrars and junior medical staff, in addition to other surgical care practitioners (subject to availability). The mentor(s) must be willing and available to work alongside you in the clinical arena, with real patients, supervising and assessing your clinical activities.

What are my career prospects?

On completion of this programme, you will gain a nationally recognised qualification that enables you to undertake the role of a surgical care practitioner.

You will also be able to demonstrate a number of core and specialist skills that will enable you to work effectively as part of the surgical team, work competently to practice within your field of speciality (e.g. cardiothoracic, colorectal, or trauma and orthopaedics) and to be able to function confidently, competently and autonomously.

This programme orientates internationally qualified dental graduates to that of a UK dental practitioner by providing a comprehensive grounding in six key training areas: basic sciences and their application to modern day dental practice, applied principles of clinical dentistry, clinical skills, communication skills, professionalism, management and leadership.

The course is delivered under three broad headings:

1. Taught
Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Relevant basic sciences including anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology with respect to health and how these are altered in disease states
-Patho-physiological and anatomical basis for clinical signs of oral and craniofacial health and disease
-Relationships between dental disease, population risk factors and the preventative measures

And integrate this knowledge to dental areas through discussions in:

-Basic and clinical science associated with pharmacology and therapeutics used in dentistry
-The science underpinning the key properties of dental materials and evaluate their clinical applications


2. Clinical
Students' clinical skills will be augmented through practical, laboratory based sessions using typodont teeth set in a manikin head.

-Operative skills will be taught to ensure students can undertake skilled, competent and safe dental procedures including: cavity design, extra-coronal restorations and non-surgical endodontic treatment.
-Simulated clinical techniques will be undertaken and the student will be introduced to decision making processes leading to tooth loss and replacement and execution of appropriate operative techniques for all stages of planned prosthodontic treatment (excluding bridges and implants) in conjunction, as necessary, with other specialists and technicians.

Students will observe current UK dental practise via clinics in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, paediatrics, prosthodontics, radiology and orthodontics.

Tutoring in Objective Structured Clinical Reasoning Examinations (OSCE) and Structured Clinical Reasoning (SCR) Exams will be carried out using the advanced facilities in the state of the art dental skills laboratory.

3. Research
The research component consists of a structured literature review and clinical audit report. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Critical appraisal and analysis of scientific and clinical literature
-How clinical audit identifies problems in clinical service and helps formulate solutions
-Appropriate tools for searching the literature (search engines, web-based libraries, electronic documents)

Students will develop the analytical skills to be able to:

-Critically appraise, analyse and evaluate scientific papers and clinical literature applying the principles of evidence based dentistry
-Evaluate evidence of the latest developments in Dentistry
-Communication skills will be developed throughout the taught, clinical and research elements of the course with specific topic presentations during seminars as well as through journal club reports and presentations on dental and clinical governance topics.

Teaching

The course is a blended learning programme taught primarily online through the King’s College London’s online learning environment, KEATS (King's E-learning and Teaching Service) which provides information, interactive questions, assignments, use of bibliographic databases and reading material. Content is supplemented by online seminars and tutorials delivered by teaching staff.

The compulsory face-to-face component takes place for five consecutive days in September at King’s College London, Guy’s campus. This component will consist of four days of lectures, practical exercises, mock oral exams and tutor feedback, which will help to prepare students for the final exams taking place on the fifth day.

*In order to view and manipulate CT scans during your online self study activities, you will be required to use free software that only runs on Windows operating systems. More details will be given at the start of the course.

Notes for applicants

The course does not provide great detail on implant planning or image-guided planning/surgery, for which dedicated software is often required.

We have designed the postgraduate training for dentists who want to understand CBCT imaging and wish to write interpretation reports on CBCT scans of dento-alveolar region.

This course is not intended to train a dentist to become a radiologist. In UK, a radiologist is trained within a scheme approved by the regional LETB/Deanery, in a hospital setting, which requires minimum of 4 years full-time training and is examined by the Royal College of Radiologists.

Course format and assessment

The course is divided into modules. You will normally take modules totalling 60 credits.

You are required to take:

  • Physics and Regulations (20 credits)
  • Anatomy (20 credits)
  • Interpretation (20 credits)

Each module consists of 6 units. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

If you're currently a trainee surgical care practitioner, working as part of a surgical team in a hospital and would like to develop your knowledge and skills, our part-time course accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England is for you.
You’ll work under the direction of a clinical consultant surgeon, as well as academics and explore techniques to evaluate, develop and influence practice to make sure that everything you do maintains and enhances patient care.
You’ll develop your skills in clinical reasoning and problem solving and understand professional, ethical and legal limitations.
You’ll learn on our Chelmsford campus through a mix of lectures, seminars and practical workshops, using our simulated skills laboratories, which mirror real-life clinical situations. You’ll gain experience in applied practice in clinical placements, within Trusts across the East of England, where you’ll be directly supervised and assessed by a dedicated medical practitioner.
By completing this course you'll achieve an MSc Surgical Care Practice, which leads to the title of Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP). This is a one-year, full-time degree programme aimed at qualified dental clinicians looking to develop competency predominately in clinical oral medicine. It focuses on the recognition, investigation, diagnosis and management of patients presenting with common oral and maxillofacial diseases and will provide a sound grounding in the fundamental principles of UK specialist practice. It also considers and incorporates the basic principles of research that are relevant to clinical and modern translational practice.

Contemporary educational methods will be used to determine and monitor knowledge base, as well as using workplace-based assessments for clinical competency. Students will be supervised by clinical, laboratory and academic staff within an established and integrated specialist clinical training and educational environment. There will be continuous verbal feedback and support to help develop skills for individual reflection and self-assessment. Students will undertake one of the following: a relevant laboratory-based research project, a clinical service review or a literature or data analysis project, leading to the submission of a dissertation.

The UHBristol NHS Trust and North Bristol Trust require those who are granted access to patients must have evidence of immunisation against infectious diseases and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance prior to commencing the clinical sessions within the Trust premises.

International applicants will be required to provide a satisfactory police check/certificate of good conduct from their home country (with a certified translation into English if necessary). This requirement will be included in the conditions of any offer that is made, and will need to be satisfied before the applicant's place on the programme can be confirmed.
