Our Primary Mathematics Specialist Teacher (MaST) PGCert is designed to support your career progression, increase your subject knowledge and help you to make a direct difference to your school and students. It offers modules that will benefit you if you work in professional or voluntary education and training, and want to enhance your skills and knowledge.

The MaST PGCert is a stand-alone qualification and counts as one-third of a masters degree. It has been developed in association with local education authorities as part of a government drive to improve the skills in the teaching profession.

This course is suitable if you are an experienced and practising primary teacher who wants to further deepen your understanding of mathematics and mathematics teaching and learning.

The flexible work-based and part-time learning programme allows you to fit studying around your existing work or voluntary commitments.

Teaching and mentoring is delivered by a successful teaching team with an outstanding national reputation and comprehensive research profile that informs and advances course content.

Course structure

Commencing from January, the MaST PGCert is a one-year part-time programme comprising of two parts. The first is usually a taught module, and the second is a practice-based module which allows you to put into practice the knowledge you have gained during the course. Alternatively, it is possible to choose two taught modules.

The flexible framework combines academic study with work-based action learning and action research, a process whereby your day-to-day professional activity informs your development through reflection and peer discussion.

The course is designed to fit in with your working patterns and delivered outside of school hours, on Thursday and Saturday evenings between 6pm and 8pm (no sessions during school holidays). It can also be based entirely within your school or organisation, or delivered as a bespoke programme for a cluster of schools.

All the specialist PGCerts are offered at Falmer campus subject to meeting the minimum numbers of participants. They can also be offered off site to an organisation, school or a cluster of schools. Please see contact details for more information in the ‘Find out more’ section.

Areas of study

The Primary Mathematics Specialist Teacher Programme (MaST) is designed for experienced and practising primary teachers wishing to further deepen their understanding of mathematics and mathematics teaching and learning.

This programme involves lively workshop style sessions where you will engage in collaborative mathematical activity and discussion with others to analyse underpinning mathematical ideas. This taught component is supplemented by critical analysis of your own classroom practice, reflection on teaching approach and the impact of these approaches on children’s mathematical learning. Additionally you will conduct more detailed analysis of learning with particular groups of children.

The programme will support you to analyse and improve your own mathematics teaching. Enthusiasm and confidence in your teaching is an essential starting point. You must also be prepared to engage in academic study including the writing of academic assignments.

This programme consists of two main components:

1) deepening mathematics subject knowledge
2) strengthening and developing pedagogical knowledge through analysis of and reflection on your own classroom practice.

The programme will enable you as a practitioner to:

• strengthen and deepen your own mathematics subject knowledge and understanding
• enhance your ability to promote learning in mathematics that is challenging and engaging for pupils
• analyse children’s learning in mathematics
• develop reflective awareness of pedagogical approaches and their impact on engagement and learning

Degree information

This programme aims to develop students’ knowledge and methods of teaching and learning mathematics. It will prepare participants to play a leading role in supporting their colleagues in developing their mathematics teaching. The programme covers topics such as algebra, geometry, fractions, early counting, and working with colleagues.

Students undertake modules to the value of 90 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (90 credits).

Teaching and Learning:
The programme is delivered through a combination of face-to-face sessions and activities to be carried out in school between sessions. Assessment is through written assignments and a portfolio of work, including a reflective essay.

English Language requirements

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

The English language level for this programme is: Special. Only the IELTS or a pass to the required standard in the Institute of Education's pre-sessional English (PASHE) course are accepted. If taking IELTS, applicants must obtain an overall grade of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in the reading subtest and 6.0 in the writing subtest.

The Williams report identifies the Mathematics Specialist Teacher as someone who, in partnership with the senior leadership team, will share the "responsibility and planning for improving, strengthening and developing mathematics teaching and learning within the school". For a Mathematics Specialist Teacher working in a cluster or federation of small schools, this may involve fulfilling this role more widely.

Employability

On successful completion of the programme, the Mathematics Specialist Teacher will have deep mathematical subject and pedagogical knowledge that informs and is informed by their own practice through study, analysis and research. They will have developed the collaborative, practice-transfer skills needed to work with colleagues across the school to develop their subject and pedagogical knowledge and to implement improvements in the teaching and learning of mathematics for all children in the school.

The School Direct Programme (Salaried) is a new route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Participating schools, or clusters of schools that join together, are allocated a set number of student-teacher places which can be applied for. Students will earn a salary while they train.

About this programme

Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees. This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

There are two compulsory school placements. Students are expected to complete the associated tasks, and to build a portfolio of evidence during the academic year to demonstrate they have met national teaching standards.

Students do not undertake academic credits on this programme. However, all components will need to be assessed to gain QTS.

Placement

As part of the programme students will spend time in placement at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshop at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days' subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching of Primary Mathematics and core subjects, and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.

The remaining 50% of your time will be teaching core subjects (English, science and computer science). Your training and teaching practice will focus on early mathematics, but it will be necessary for you to demonstrate competence in phonics delivery, inclusion and behaviour management.

You will train to teach across the 5-11 age range in Key Stages 1 and 2 and achieve the Teachers’ Standards. The training experience is designed to fully prepare you for your first year as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).

How will I study?

A combination of seminars, tutorials, a summer school and weekend conferences, together with practical, work-based learning in the classroom will give you the knowledge and skills you need to become an excellent teacher. A substantial amount of face-to-face contact time with specialist tutors will be facilitated across all Primary National Curriculum subjects. You will be supported by online and distance learning materials and encouraged to develop key skills, including the use of technology, to support your own learning.

You will also spend a significant amount of time in schools in a variety of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classes during the programme. Course detail

You will gain a postgraduate certificate (60 Masters level credits) which can be transferred if you undertake further Masters study.

In module 1, you will explore the mathematics within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and primary National Curriculum, and into Key Stage 3. You will identify key mathematical ideas and processes in the curriculum and trace how these progress. The aim is that you develop deep understanding of primary mathematics.

Module 2 focuses on pedagogy. You will consider teaching approaches that promote children’s conceptual understanding of and fluency in primary mathematics. There will be an investigation of mastery of mathematics. You will evaluate a wide repertoire of teaching approaches critically, including those used in other countries.

In module 3, you will develop the knowledge and understanding needed to work with your colleagues. You will consider strategies to support other teachers’ and teaching assistants’ subject and teaching knowledge in primary mathematics. The module will also explore how to lead whole school initiatives and lead effective, collaborative professional development.

Assessment

You will be required to submit three assignments of 2000 words each. These assignments are designed to support you in developing mathematics in your own setting. For example, you will investigate progression from the early years across the primary phase in one area of mathematics which you wish to develop in your school.

As part of this assignment, you will examine how to support progression in children’s learning of their mathematics. A second assignment will explore one approach to teaching mathematics such as the use of manipulatives or mathematical talk. The final assignment will support you in working with your colleagues to develop their teaching of mathematics. You will be offered tutorial support for all assignments.

Course summary

This programme is for students who have a strength in mathematics and wish to teach in primary schools, focusing solely or mainly on mathematics.

This programme has been devised in response to government policy to train specialist primary mathematics teachers to address identified needs in primary mathematics teaching. 

The programme focuses on developing you as a confident mathematics teacher, able to teach higher attaining older children as well as teaching to the range of attainment found in primary schools. As a specialist mathematics teacher you will also be someone able to advise and enthuse colleagues so as to raise attainment throughout the school. As Ofsted (2011) showed, this means ensuring effective mathematics teaching from the Foundation Stage and for all children, not just high attainers.

You will be someone who can demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject and potential to inspire children and colleagues. The aim is to raise the profile of mathematics and confidence and achievement of children.

You will need to demonstrate very good subject knowledge as well as having a strong interest in promoting positive attitudes to mathematics learning. In addition you will need to show you have a good understanding of primary education and a commitment to high expectations for all children.

The course provides both an academic qualification at Masters-level (PGCE) and a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will gain from the expertise and enthusiasm of our school mentors and university subject tutors in small, subject-based teaching groups at Roehampton, tailored to your experience and expertise.

Content

The Mathematics Specialist pathway has different modules which are geared towards becoming a specialist Mathematics teacher. 

You will focus on the core knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to enter the teaching profession and spend time analysing the primary practices experienced in your placements with a consideration of contemporary issues and research. You will also focus on subject knowledge and pedagogy in the National Curriculum core subjects (English, Mathematics and Science) and foundation subjects (Art and Design, Computing, Design and Technology, Foreign Languages, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education). The foundation subjects are introduced via one group seminar for each of the nine subjects. This session will provide an introduction to the subject including pedagogical techniques and provide a signpost to current research and further reading. 

The knowledge in this programme will be a combination of mathematics carried out by the specialists themselves and an in depth study of the mathematics to be taught. You will build a strong awareness of how to transform mathematical ideas into knowledge for teaching. Personal subject knowledge will be addressed through materials such as Roehampton’s very successful Mathematics Enhancement Course, adapted for primary specialists.

About this programme

Our Primary PGCE develops effective, confident teachers whose classroom practice is informed by an advanced knowledge of educational theory, and who will continue to learn and reflect throughout their careers. We will help students to acquire the skills and expertise to support children’s learning, prepare them to teach in an inclusive urban environment, provide professional development in all national curriculum subjects with a strong focus on mathematics and ensure that students show a concern for professional values and demonstrate the positive attitudes and behaviour expected from pupils.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules as part of the PGCE with a total of 60 Master’s credits on successful completion.

The programme consists of three core modules, two at Master’s-level (level 7) and one at Undergraduate-level (level 6) and three school placements.

Where less than 60 credits are achieved at level 7, but are successfully passed at level 6, a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) - including a QTS recommendation - will be awarded. Placement

As part of the programme students will spend time on placements at primary schools, during which time their teaching experience will be supported by a tutor and mentor. Students will spend 120 days on placements.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials and self-study. Students will be supported though a virtual learning environment and will participate in school placements. Assessment is through assignments, presentations, audits, feedback and tutorials. A final assessment is based on a range of evidence including observations of teaching, assignments, subject knowledge development, professional conduct and responses to self-study.

Course Overview

The course is split into a number of modules, each designed to give you all the skills you need to teach within the secondary sector. You will study various styles of teaching Mathematics and ICT to pupils, including lesson planning, resource preparation and selection, teaching approaches for examination courses, class management and control, assessment of attainment, and the impact of Mathematics and ICT on learning.

You will be assisted in developing the range of your specialist knowledge and skills to cover all the content required for the National Curriculum at key stage three, GCSE at key stage Four and GCE 'A' level at key stage five and equivalent vocational courses.

The course will involve concept and skill development in all aspects of Mathematics and ICT. You will be expected to work together in groups to present seminars such as ICT in Mathematics, A level topics and research into mathematical misconceptions.

Other aspects of the course include the Literacy and Numeracy Framework and as a Mathematics PGCE student you will be expected to lead support sessions on Numeracy to the whole Secondary PGCE cohort. There are also opportunities to teach and be involved with Further Mathematics A Level teaching and also to be involved in Mathematics Masterclasses with local Year 9 pupils, both in conjunction with Swansea University.

The PGCE Mathematics room is well equipped with internet-linked computers and a networked interactive whiteboard. There is good access to other ICT suites for timetabled sessions and plentiful open access to ICT facilities for trainees. At University you will receive specialist sessions in ICT as well as Mathematics.

The PGCE Mathematics with ICT course uses partner schools and colleges across South Wales. Placements are decided after consultations between mentors, subject tutors and the Programme Director. All placements will be found within realistic commuting distances; however, trainees are expected to be prepared to travel to placements.

It is available with English and Welsh medium student provision using long established English and Welsh medium partnership schools and colleges.

The course has recently been updated to reflect contemporary issues and changes within the world of education. It is taught by highly respected tutors who have considerable knowledge within their field and chosen specialism.

The course is challenging, but motivating and invigorating, combining practical strategies and skills with academic enquiry and theory.

There are opportunities to investigate areas of specialist interest.

The course is split between university and professional teaching practice, with approximately 12 weeks and occasional days and 24 weeks split between two placements. The weeks at University are designed in such a way that you experience lead lectures both with your own subject area and with students from different subject areas in order to have an insight about how a particular issue relates to different specialist subjects. These may be given by University Staff or by guest lecturers with specialist expertise.

There are also plenty of opportunities where your experience can be enhanced such as involvement with the Further Mathematics scheme, Year 9 Mathematics Masterclasses, numeracy support sessions and expert speakers from local schools and exam boards.

Within the newly designed course if you are achieving your QTS early it is envisaged that should you wish to take the opportunity you can arrange a fortnight placement at an establishment of your choice within the Secondary or 14-19 sector. This will enable you to observe, experience a specialist area that you may wish to pursue. It could include special needs schools, independent schools and training establishments. This opportunity is likely to increase your experience and employability.

The University offers excellent support to trainees in seeking their first posts. Participants are trained in interview techniques. There is also a large and popular annual Teaching Employment Fair in January.

The employment rate for the course is one of the best in Wales and many graduates of the course are now Heads of Department or Senior Teachers and act as Mentors for the programme.

Assessment

The course comprises of 120 credits, 40 of which are at Masters level and is assessed by a combination of written assignments and Professional Teaching Experience.

The assignments are a combination of level 6 and level 7 assignments and are designed to combine practical teaching strategies and academic enquiry.

The Professional teaching practice is assess through teaching observations by both experienced placement mentors and university tutors against the Qualified Teacher Standards.

Our PGCE Primary Mathematics (Subject Specialist) routes will enable you to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to teach in primary schools, with specialist training in primary mathematics.

You will be required to train in two consecutive age phases, Key Stage 1/Key Stage 2, or Key Stage 2 (7-9, 9-11). However, maths content will range from FS - KS2, with elements of Key Stage 3 also included within the specialist provision. This is so that you will have a clear understanding of progression in mathematics.

After being formally assessed against the national statutory requirements, you can be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status. The Postgraduate certificate also provides an opportunity for Master's-level credits, which you can gain through the submission of appropriate assignments. You will be registered initially on the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, but there will be opportunities to transfer to the Postgraduate award and gain Master's-level credits.

The programme is run in partnership with schools. You will spend a minimum of 24 weeks in a primary school, including extended experience in two schools, plus further opportunities in a range of educational contexts.

The PGCE Secondary Mathematics course at UWE will support you in becoming a confident, competent, reflective mathematics teacher.

Course detail

The course is active and practical allowing trainees to develop professional competence through work undertaken in schools and in the University. Trainees work with young people, develop their expertise in their specialist subject area, share and discuss educational issues and study relevant educational research. The course is just the beginning of what we hope will be a process of continual professional development throughout a challenging and rewarding career.

Structure

The course is part of the Department of Education's programme for Initial Teacher Training. Units studied are:

• Enabling Learning
• Meeting Curriculum Challenges
• Becoming a Teacher

These units are studied in both the school and the University-based parts of the course, the work on each site being complementary.

During the 36 week course you will address the various aspects of learning and teaching mathematics - how you learn and, through reflection, how young people might learn, as well as factors which may inhibit their learning. Sessions will involve you in workshops, discussion and informal lectures.

Work in schools is an integral part of the course. You will gain teaching experience in two schools where you will have opportunities to try out your ideas and further your learning skills and experience of mathematics teaching. You will work alongside teachers and student colleagues with small groups and individuals as well as engaging in whole class teaching. In each school there is a mathematics subject mentor who has primary responsibility for your day-to-day work and study. Your subject mentor will support you in your learning to teach, assess and manage classes in mathematics.

Course aims

Throughout the course you will:

• engage in interesting and challenging mathematical starting points, reflecting on your own work and the nature of mathematical activity
• consider how learning environments appropriate to learners of all abilities can be created
• focus on specific issues related to the mathematics classroom, for example, the National Curriculum, numeracy, ICT and mathematics, special educational needs, differentiation and progression, the cross-cultural nature of mathematics, pupil assessment, language, and the teaching of mathematics at post-16 level
• explore strategies for the effective management of learners and resources, including ICT, in the classroom situation
• consider different teaching and learning styles, for example whole-class interactive teaching, problem solving, practical and investigative activity
• use your ability and initiative to create starting points which enable traditional areas of mathematics to be explored in interesting ways
• critically evaluate existing resources for mathematics, including computer software
• work at enhancing your own knowledge and understanding in mathematics and ICT with respect to the National Curriculum, National Strategy, and the 14-19 curriculum, including AS/A2 level

Format

We recognise that embarking on a new course of study can sometimes be quite a challenging undertaking. Students have three main sources of support and information from the University during the course: firstly there is the Group Tutor in their subject area, secondly each student is allocated a Personal Tutor and thirdly any student can get support on a range of issues from the Department Student Adviser.

Assessment

In order to pass the course, trainees are required to pass each unit. They are assessed on a number of written assignments and also on classroom practice against the standards specified by the Secretary of State for the award of QTS.

Placements

You will spend 24 weeks on placement: a total of eight weeks in one placement during the autumn term and 16 weeks in a second placement during the spring and summer.

As well as teaching, the programme includes contact time with a Senior Professional Tutor and a Subject Mentor, directed study time and personal study time.

There is an opportunity to spend time in a primary school and some students may also visit other institutions, such as special schools or colleges of further education.

Careers / Further study

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programmes now include 40 credits of assessment at Master's Level (Level M). For candidates who opt not to attempt the requisite credit at Level M, a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education will be available as an alternative award.

This one year full-time programme equips trainees to teach Mathematics up to and including A Level within the secondary sector (including Welsh medium if requested).

The programme has recently been updated to reflect contemporary issues and changes within the national curriculum. Numeracy skills are a key priority within the National Curriculum across all subjects so you will be involved in offering numeracy-support sessions to other students within the university. These sessions provide you with the opportunity to gain additional work experience.

Course Overview

The course is split into a number of modules, each designed to give you all the skills you need to teach within the secondary sector. You will study various styles of teaching Mathematics to pupils, including lesson planning, resource preparation and selection, teaching approaches for examination courses, class management and control, assessment of attainment, and the impact of Mathematics on learning.

You will be assisted in developing the range of your specialist knowledge and skills to cover all the content required for the National Curriculum at key stage three, GCSE at key stage Four and GCE 'A' level at key stage five and equivalent vocational courses.

The course will involve concept and skill development in all aspects of Mathematics. You will be expected to work together in groups to present seminars such as ICT in Mathematics, A level topics and research into mathematical misconceptions.

Other aspects of the course include the Literacy and Numeracy Framework and as a Mathematics PGCE student you will be expected to lead support sessions on Numeracy to the whole Secondary PGCE cohort. There are also opportunities to teach and be involved with Further Mathematics A Level teaching and also to be involved in Mathematics master classes with local Year 9 pupils, both in conjunction with Swansea University.

The PGCE Mathematics room is well equipped with internet-linked computers and a networked interactive whiteboard. There is good access to other ICT suites for timetabled sessions and plentiful open access to ICT facilities for trainees.

The PGCE Mathematics course uses partner schools and colleges across South Wales. Placements are decided after consultations between mentors, subject tutors and the Programme Director. All placements will be found within realistic commuting distances; however, trainees are expected to be prepared to travel to placements.

The course has recently been updated to reflect contemporary issues and changes within the world of education. It is taught by highly respected tutors who have considerable knowledge within their field and chosen specialism.

The course is challenging, but motivating and invigorating, combining practical strategies and skills with academic enquiry and theory.

There are opportunities to investigate areas of specialist interest.

The course is split between university and professional teaching practice, with approximately 12 weeks and occasional days and 24 weeks split between two placements. The weeks at University are designed in such a way that you experience lead lectures both with your own subject area and with students from different subject areas in order to have an insight about how a particular issue relates to different specialist subjects. These may be given by University Staff or by guest lecturers with specialist expertise.

There are also plenty of opportunities where your experience can be enhanced such as involvement with the Further Mathematics scheme, Year 9 Mathematics Masterclasses, numeracy support sessions and expert speakers from local schools and exam boards.

Within the newly designed course if you are achieving your QTS early it is envisaged that should you wish to take the opportunity you can arrange a fortnight placement at an establishment of your choice within the Secondary or 14-19 sector. This will enable you to observe, experience a specialist area that you may wish to pursue. It could include special needs schools, independent schools and training establishments. This opportunity is likely to increase your experience and employability.

The University offers excellent support to trainees in seeking their first posts. Participants are trained in interview techniques. There is also a large and popular annual Teaching Employment Fair in January.

The employment rate for the course is one of the best in Wales and many graduates of the course are now Heads of Department or Senior Teachers and act as Mentors for the programme.

Assessment

The course comprises of 120 credits, 40 of which are at Masters level and is assessed by a combination of written assignments and Professional Teaching Experience.

The assignments are a combination of level 6 and level 7 assignments and are designed to combine practical teaching strategies and academic enquiry.

The Professional teaching practice is assess through teaching observations by both experienced placement mentors and university tutors against the Qualified Teacher Standards.

Many school and college departments, both locally and nationally, are staffed with several of our teachers and many of our trainees have gone on to forge successful teaching careers at strategic, professional and management levels at home and abroad.

Our PGCE graduates usually remain in close touch with us as they make their careers in the teaching profession and they often become Subject Mentors on the programme. This creates a very strong, sustainable professional network of teachers which is a rich source of continuing professional development.
