Degree information

This programme aims to develop students’ knowledge and methods of teaching and learning mathematics. It will prepare participants to play a leading role in supporting their colleagues in developing their mathematics teaching. The programme covers topics such as algebra, geometry, fractions, early counting, and working with colleagues.

Students undertake modules to the value of 90 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (90 credits).

The PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS is a school-led programme which combines on-campus study with training in placement schools and settings.

You will train to teach across the 5-11 age range in Key Stages 1 and 2 and achieve the Teachers’ Standards. The training experience is designed to fully prepare you for your first year as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).

During the programme, you will study all of the National Curriculum subjects and you will specialise in Mathematics in great depth. You will qualify as a Primary teacher who will also be able to bring a passion for Mathematics and excellent Mathematics subject knowledge to a first teaching post.

What will I study?

The programme consists of four main elements.

- Specialism – choosing Mathematics as your specialism will enable you to enhance and deepen your knowledge of the subject, undertake action research projects in school, and further your knowledge and understanding of how Mathematics is taught and led in school. You will also develop a clear understanding of the needs of children who struggle to learn Mathematics, gaining an understanding of how to teach them effectively and give them the confidence to progress;

- Weekend Conferences – three weekend conferences provide an opportunity for deeper study of aspects of Primary Mathematics including international and historical perspectives and research from the forefront of the subject.

How will I study?

A combination of seminars, tutorials, a summer school and weekend conferences, together with practical, work-based learning in the classroom will give you the knowledge and skills you need to become an excellent teacher. A substantial amount of face-to-face contact time with specialist tutors will be facilitated across all Primary National Curriculum subjects. You will be supported by online and distance learning materials and encouraged to develop key skills, including the use of technology, to support your own learning.

You will also spend a significant amount of time in schools in a variety of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classes during the programme. Over the length of the PGCE, you will progress from teaching small groups with a partner to teaching a full class on your own as you become more confident in the classroom. Course detail

You will gain a postgraduate certificate (60 Masters level credits) which can be transferred if you undertake further Masters study.

In module 1, you will explore the mathematics within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and primary National Curriculum, and into Key Stage 3. You will identify key mathematical ideas and processes in the curriculum and trace how these progress. The aim is that you develop deep understanding of primary mathematics.

Module 2 focuses on pedagogy. You will consider teaching approaches that promote children’s conceptual understanding of and fluency in primary mathematics. There will be an investigation of mastery of mathematics. You will evaluate a wide repertoire of teaching approaches critically, including those used in other countries.

In module 3, you will develop the knowledge and understanding needed to work with your colleagues. You will consider strategies to support other teachers’ and teaching assistants’ subject and teaching knowledge in primary mathematics. The module will also explore how to lead whole school initiatives and lead effective, collaborative professional development.

Assessment

You will be required to submit three assignments of 2000 words each. These assignments are designed to support you in developing mathematics in your own setting. For example, you will investigate progression from the early years across the primary phase in one area of mathematics which you wish to develop in your school.

As part of this assignment, you will examine how to support progression in children’s learning of their mathematics. A second assignment will explore one approach to teaching mathematics such as the use of manipulatives or mathematical talk. The final assignment will support you in working with your colleagues to develop their teaching of mathematics. You will be offered tutorial support for all assignments.

The School Direct Programme (Salaried) is a new route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Participating schools, or clusters of schools that join together, are allocated a set number of student-teacher places which can be applied for. Students will earn a salary while they train.

Degree information

Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees. This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

There are two compulsory school placements. Students are expected to complete the associated tasks, and to build a portfolio of evidence during the academic year to demonstrate they have met national teaching standards.

Students do not undertake academic credits on this programme. However, all components will need to be assessed to gain QTS.

Where student teachers opt to gain the additional PGCE pathway, and less than 60 credits are achieved at level 7, but are successfully passed at level 6, a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) will be awarded.

Trainees may apply for an additional PGCE pathway during the programme (tuition fees apply). Students who gain 60 credits at level 7 (Master’s level) receive a PGCE; where 60 credits are passed at level 6 (undergraduate level) a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) is awarded.

Placement
As part of the programme students will spend time in placement at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. For this programme students will spend the majority of the programme in school, employed as an unqualified teacher.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshop at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days' subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.

Careers

Graduates of UCL Institute of Education's Primary teacher training programmes are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as classroom teachers and mentors to PGCE students, while others have jobs as deputy and assistant headteachers. Graduates in this area can also be found working as headteachers and educational consultants.

Methods of Learning

The entire MA involves 140 hours of taught sessions, all of which are taught as interactive sessions involving activities and discussions. This means students will typically attend classes for six hours per week if studying full time, although this may vary depending on the modules taken. In addition full-time students will be expected to undertake a further 24 hours per week of private study and research. Part-time students taking the course over three years will be expected to do one third of this. You should however be aware that this is not consistently spread across the year and that at some points you may be working considerably more hours in a week. There will also be the chance to attend additional optional sessions and presentations connected to the research undertaken at the Faculty of Education and Humanities.

Assessments

The course assessment involves essays, portfolios, presentations, practical projects and small scale studies. Students will complete their final Dissertation or Research Thesis on a topic negotiated with a tutor.

You'll gain 60 Masters level credits and be awarded with a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education. You'll develop your expertise in the subject and pedagogy of Mathematics and build an understanding of progression in the subject. For your Alternative Education Setting (AES) pleacement you'll have an opportunity to work in the Mathematics department of a secondary school. At Masters level you'll develop leadership skills and expertise in the subject and pedagogy of Mathematics.

The programme will give you an in-depth understanding of inclusive practice, equality and diversity to prepare you for a career in London schools. Bursaries

The Government provides the following bursaries to be off-set against tuition fees, via the Training Agency. Tuition fees need to be paid by all students direct to LSBU. Students can use any bursary they receive from the Training Agency for this purpose.

As a primary teacher specialising in mathematics, dependent on your mathematics A level qualification, you could be eligible for a training bursary of either £6,000 with a first, 2:1, 2:2, Master’s or PhD or £3,000 for other degree awards.

You do not need to apply for bursaries. Once you have firmly accepted an unconditional offer of a place on a Teacher Training course (and supplied proof of your degree grade) the University will liaise with the Department for Education to put your bursary in place.

H Level Modules:
- Core curriculum
This module covers all aspects of the English, mathematics, science and computing national curriculum at Key Stage 1.

- Professional studies
This module covers theories of learning, planning, teaching and assessment, classroom management and employment.

- Foundation subjects
This module covers the national curriculum foundation subjects including: history, geography, art and design, music, and design technology.

- School experience
School experience begins in week four of the course. During your Reading Mentor placement you'll be placed in a local school three times a week, gaining experience in the teaching of reading. You'll have opportunities to work with a designated child to develop an in-depth understanding of how teaching relates to pupil learning and progress. Your first block school experience is eight weeks and culminates with you leading a class. School experience 2 is a nine week block, and by the end of this placement you will be expected to teach the whole class for up to three days a week.


- Alternative education setting
In term two you will take your Alternative Education Setting placement in the Mathematics department of a secondary school. This enables you to have an understanding of progression in mathematics and compare primary and secondary school pedagogy.

M Level Modules:
- Equality, inclusion and citizenship
This module will allow you to reflect on key issues such as equality, diversity and sustainability in the educational context. You'll undertake a small piece of classroom research.

- Raising Achievement in Mathematics
You'll gain the depth of knowledge and understanding you will need to successfully teach mathematics with competence and confidence, and begin to develop as a specialist in this area. You will explore progression and application across different strands of primary mathematics and at Key Stage 3, including developing pedagogical approaches which will help you motivate and inspire the next generation of mathematics learners. This module will also help you consider what it means to lead mathematics across a school, including considering curriculum design and teacher development.

Employability

Completion and employment rates for our PGCE are both above the sector norms and we have been identified as a good provider of initial teacher training (OFSTED 2014). Although we pride ourselves in providing teachers for London schools, successful students enter the teaching profession in a variety of schools/nurseries within the UK.

All students entering the course have the possibility of gaining up to 60 credits at Masters level, which can be used by students to count towards the award of full Masters qualifications (such as the LSBU MA in Education) gained via further study after graduation.

During the course you'll undertake placements in at least two schools. Placement schools are chosen to provide different experiences including size, organisation and location. Our partnership works with a wide range schools across London. Placements are allocated as best fit for each trainee, but if you live in outer London or beyond it may require careful planning by you so that you are able to work at assigned schools.

In addition you'll undertake a two-week placement in an Alternative Education Setting (AES) and a two-week placement in a secondary school Mathematics department. A key element of the programme is to prepare you to work in multi-cultural, urban settings. In terms of school experience placements, you'll normally be required to do at least one practice in an inner or outer London state school.

We provide a thorough training course incorporating all areas of the primary curriculum.

The university based sessions are taught through lectures, workshops, practical sessions, seminars and tutorials. You will be assisted in developing the range of your specialist knowledge and skills to cover all the content required for the National Curriculum at key stage three, GCSE at key stage Four and GCE 'A' level at key stage five and equivalent vocational courses.

During the 36 week course you will address the various aspects of learning and teaching mathematics - how you learn and, through reflection, how young people might learn, as well as factors which may inhibit their learning. Sessions will involve you in workshops, discussion and informal lectures.

Work in schools is an integral part of the course. You will gain teaching experience in two schools where you will have opportunities to try out your ideas and further your learning skills and experience of mathematics teaching. You will work alongside teachers and student colleagues with small groups and individuals as well as engaging in whole class teaching. In each school there is a mathematics subject mentor who has primary responsibility for your day-to-day work and study. Your subject mentor will support you in your learning to teach, assess and manage classes in mathematics.

Course aims

Throughout the course you will:

• engage in interesting and challenging mathematical starting points, reflecting on your own work and the nature of mathematical activity
• consider how learning environments appropriate to learners of all abilities can be created

Format

We recognise that embarking on a new course of study can sometimes be quite a challenging undertaking. Students have three main sources of support and information from the University during the course: firstly there is the Group Tutor in their subject area, secondly each student is allocated a Personal Tutor and thirdly any student can get support on a range of issues from the Department Student Adviser.

Assessment

In order to pass the course, trainees are required to pass each unit. They are assessed on a number of written assignments and also on classroom practice against the standards specified by the Secretary of State for the award of QTS.

Placements

You will spend 24 weeks on placement: a total of eight weeks in one placement during the autumn term and 16 weeks in a second placement during the spring and summer.

As well as teaching, the programme includes contact time with a Senior Professional Tutor and a Subject Mentor, directed study time and personal study time.

There is an opportunity to spend time in a primary school and some students may also visit other institutions, such as special schools or colleges of further education.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three Parts. Part A. Orientation studies, Part B. Specialist studies, Part C. Applied professional practice. All students complete Part B. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part C or a combination of the two.

Part A. Orientation studies
These studies provide an orientation to the field of Financial Mathematics. You will choose studies that complement your current knowledge relevant to financial mathematics, including principles of econometrics, mathematical methods and stochastic processes.

Part B. Specialist studies
These studies will provide you with advanced knowledge and skills relevant to thoughtful, innovative and evidence-based practice in financial modelling and analysis. You will acquire core knowledge of and skills in financial econometrics, and advanced mathematical modelling and computational methods in finance. You will complement these with study in areas of your choice, including interest rate modelling, Markov processes, statistical learning in finance, and global financial markets.

Part C. Applied professional practice
These studies will provide you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge skills developed in Part A and B to "real life" problems, through completing an industry project or an industry internship. Students admitted to the course who have a recognised honours degree or graduate diploma or graduate certificate in a cognate discipline including mathematics or statistics, will receive credit for this part however, should they wish to complete a 24 point research project as part of Part B they should consult with the course convenor.

This programme is designed for graduates in mathematics, engineering, or science with excellent numeracy skills, wishing to pursue careers in the application of mathematics, in traditional areas such as engineering and science and in service areas such as finance and banking, where knowledge of modern applications of mathematics would be advantageous. The core philosophy of the programme is to equip students both with mathematics and its applications and with high-level scientific software and associated numerical skills. The Greenwich campus, near the financial district of Canary Wharf, enables the department to build ties with many modern engineering and applied mathematics practitioners enabling our students to become part of a wider group. The Leslie Comrie seminar series, inviting both academics and industrialists, allows you to interact with our external links creating an advantageous learning experience. We provide you the grounds for building a high profile of understanding of current research practices in the industry. Our classes contain interactive applications that enhance the learning experience by innovative teaching practices. Utilising research expertise within the department you will graduate with a strong understanding of numerical methods. You will also develop an understanding for further applicability in various fields of applied mathematics and engineering.

This programme is suitable both for fresh graduates and also for experienced professional practitioners who wish to further their skills. The programme core modules cover modern mathematical skills together with applications across different industries, and there are optional professional modules directly related to research expertise within the Faculty. This ensures that students have an advanced understanding of both theory and practice in their selected specialist areas. Students will gain knowledge of mathematical skills and applications, computational skills, and relevant professional experience, related to traditional engineering and science modelling, modern enterprise applications, finance, and service industries. They will gain an understanding of emerging applications. There will be hands-on training in various development tools and in the use of computational software related to their professional direction. Assessment takes the form of 100% coursework, based on applications of current market practices. A supervised thesis project takes place at the end of the last teaching term during the summer months. Projects are allocated in March and students are invited to undertake a project that provides genuine insight in an area of the research interests within the department. The programme is also available on a part-time basis.

If you are a qualified, practising teacher, seeking to improve your subject knowledge of mathematics, then this could be the programme for you. The PGCert replaces the previous MAST programme, and has the same aims of developing personal practice and whole school impact. In essence, it is a school improvement programme. The whole programme (from PGCert through to MA) is designed to enhance your mathematical subject knowledge and pedagogical skills, improve your understanding of the primary mathematics curriculum, identify school priorities, and engage you in a practice-development project. You will discover a range of approaches to teaching and learning and become conversant with the requirements of the new national curriculum with the knowledge and capability to support its implementation across your school. The programme also offers the opportunity to network and share good practice with colleagues from around the country.

What will I study?

The early phase of the programme, at PGCert level, provides a strong focus on mathematics subject knowledge in relation to the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 curricula. Some consideration is also given to the Key Stage 2/3 transition. You will have the opportunity to support this subject knowledge with an exploration of appropriate teaching strategies.

Progessing to PGDip level, you will have the flexibility to choose from a range of optional modules including further mathematics knowledge, teaching and learning, leadership development, special educational needs, and dyscalculia.

To complete the MA, you will prepare a proposal for, and conduct, a practice development project.

How will I study?

The course is delivered in blended mode, with some modules having three face-to-face conference days (in Birmingham or Manchester), while other modules have negotiated face-to-face elements. During conference days, you will work with designated consultants in groups of approximately 15.

As a blended programme, there is a teaching interface via a virtual learning environment through which you will have access to module and university library resources, activities and interactive support, both peer-to-peer and tutor-to-peer.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through coursework based on a range of professional learning activities and projects. Opportunities for formative feedback will be scheduled throughout each module.

Who will be teaching me?

The programme team have considerable expertise in the field of mathematics education and postgraduate professional learning. Tutors have recent and relevant experience of teaching and leading mathematics in primary schools and consultants leading the conference workshops are local authority or independent experts. Keynote speakers at the conferences are nationally and internationally recognised and respected figures in the field of mathematics education.

What are my career prospects?

On completion of this programme, you will be well placed to apply for more senior roles both in your current school and at other institutions.

As a Specialist Primary Mathematics Practitioners, you will have the knowledge and skills to make a significant and positive contribution to a range of school improvement and school-to-school support initiatives.

Leadership development is a core part of the programme which will enable you to apply for leadership roles, such as Deputy Head or Specialist Leader of Education (SLE), in a range of educational contexts.
