The expertise of modeling engineers cannot be restricted to classical devices, tools, and instrumentation, but requires a deeper and systematic knowledge of the basic concepts of mathematical and numerical modeling, with a wider vision on the intimate inter-relationship between data, physical processes, and computational methods.

The Master degree in "Mathematical Engineering", offered by the University of Padova, captures the evolution of professional engineers proposing an advanced study program that combines both solid fundamental knowledge of the physical processes and deep theoretical and technological competences. The Master of Science in Mathematical Engineering is unique in Flanders and is supported by high quality research that has led to several spin-off companies.

The ever increasing computer capacity for treatment of data, storage of measurements and data, and computing models, offers solutions to important challenges in business and society. Often mathematical techniques are crucial. A few examples:

  • How does an auto-pilot work?
  • How do you trace credit card fraud?
  • How do you find out which genes play an important role in cancer?
  • How do you simulate the evolution of greenhouses gases in the atmosphere?
  • How do you determine the value of financial products such as options?
  • How do you compress the images of fingerprints?
  • How do you compute airplane noise?
  • How do you optimise the process in a chemical reactor?
  • How do you analyse customer data and model consumer profiles?
  • How do you find abnormalities in brain images caused by epileptic seizures?

At first sight, these applications have little in common. However, for each of those, large amounts of data and various models are available. Mathematical techniques are crucial for the efficient treatment of these data and for fast and accurate simulation and optimisation.

Structure 

The programme consists of a technical core education on advanced topics on mathematics, process control, system identification, numerical optimisation, numerical simulation of differential equations, scientific software, and a project where students solve a problem that requires a combination of knowledge and skills taught at the core education.

The students freely choose among the many elective courses. They are stimulated to select courses from different tracks in order to obtain a broad overview of techniques and applications of mathematics in engineering science.

The elective courses include technical courses on mathematical techniques, as well as courses that are taught in other Master’s programmes that focus on modelling and the use of these mathematical techniques.

International

The Erasmus+ programme gives you the opportunity to gain valuable international experience by completing (usually) one semester at a participating European university. Student exchange agreements are also in place with a number of Japanese and American universitiesThis arrangement does not lengthen the duration of your degree programme, nor does it result in a separate degree.

It is also possible to complete an internship at a company abroad. Ask the internship coordinator for more information.

There are many elective courses, which gives freedom to develop an individual study programme tuned to the student’s interest. This fact is often mentioned by students and alumni as one of the strong points of the programme.

The Master of Science in Mathematical Engineering (MSME) aims to form an innovative and flexible professional profile, endowed with a wide spectrum of basic scientific notions and engineering principles, together with a deep knowledge of modern pure and applied mathematical techniques. MSME is characterized by a continuous synergy between Mathematics and Engineering methods, oriented to the modelling, analysis and solution of complex planning, control and management problems, and provides the students with the possibility to face problems from various scientific, financial and/or technological areas. The MSME graduates can find employment in Engineering companies specialized in handling complex computational problems, requiring a multidisciplinary knowledge; in companies manufacturing industrial goods for which design analysis based on the use of advanced mathematical procedures are required; in service societies, banks, insurance companies, finance or consultant agencies for the statistical interpretation and the simulation of complex situations related to the analysis of large number of data (e.g. management and optimization of services, data mining, information retrieval) or for handling financial products and risk management; in public and private institutions. The ICMA Centre’s financial engineering degree is highly respected by quantitative analysts and their employers. The credit crunch and subsequent events have emphasised the need to develop better pricing and better hedging models for all complex products. The practical and quantitative skills that you will develop on the programme will equip you to meet this challenge.

Our compulsory modules provide a firm grounding in probability theory, stochastic calculus, derivatives pricing, quantitative and numerical methods, structuring products, volatility analysis, and the modelling of credit, equity, foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives. We also provide a thorough training in C++ and other programming tools.

Optional modules will allow you to focus on risk analysis, portfolio management, designing trading strategies or econometric analysis. This newly structured degree aims to further enhance the strong reputation of its precursor – the MSc in Financial Engineering and Quantitative Analysis, which was established back in 1999. A good background in mathematics is required for acceptance to this programme (see entry requirements below).

Careers

Many of our financial engineering graduates are now working as Quants in large London banks and other financial institutions. Others have pursued PhDs and have successful academic careers. Financial instruments are becoming ever more sophisticated, so graduates that understand complex modelling techniques are always in great demand. The high quantitative content of this programme opens many doors to a wide range of careers. You could structure and develop new debt or equity solutions to meet clients funding and hedging needs, or you could become a proprietary trader in exotic derivatives, or a software specialist or a quantitative analyst supporting the traders.

There are excellent opportunities on the buy-side, with hedge funds and investment institutions, as well as in investment banking and in software analytics. Opportunities in quantitative research, or with a rating agency, are among the many other attractive alternatives. Outside of mainstream banking and investment, you might also consider firms involved in commodity and energy trading, or the treasury divisions of leading multinationals and management consultancies.

Course Content

Continued design of modern complex products demands advanced knowledge in mechanical, electronic, manufacturing and control engineering disciplines and human factors in design, and an ability to use advanced engineering software packages, integrating application experience and a capacity to carry on learning.

The Advanced Engineering Design MSc has been developed to produce design engineers who can meet these demands. It contains six taught modules where advanced multi-disciplinary theory is taught. As part of the course, six engineering software packages are also taught. In order to give an integrating application experience in an industrial setup, 'Design Experience', a group project module with an industry, has been included as part of the curriculum.

The dissertation is aimed at providing training in carrying out an in-depth engineering task on a self-learning basis. In addressing these and other environmental challenges, engineers and environmental managers are using sophisticated numerical models for predicting complex hydrodynamic, water quality and sediment transport processes. These models are increasingly complemented with decision support software systems and a wide range of related hydroinformatics software tools.

The MSc in Civil and Water Engineering will offer you the knowledge and expertise that you need for a career as a consulting water engineer within this specialist professional area of civil engineering. Teaching

A wide range of teaching styles will be used to deliver the diverse material forming the curriculum of the programme. You will attend lectures and participate in examples classes. You must complete 120 credits in Stage 1 in order to progress to the dissertation, for which you will be allocated a supervisor from among the teaching staff. Dissertation topics are normally chosen from a range of project titles proposed by academic staff, usually in areas of current research interest, although you will be encouraged to put forward your own project ideas.

Assessment

Assessment is conducted via coursework and examinations.

Our MSc Euromasters programme is designed for electronic engineering students and professionals with an interest in gaining further qualifications in advanced, cutting-edge techniques and technologies in the selected pathway, with enhanced project, as well as training in transferable skills including business awareness and management.

We offer numerous Electronic Engineering MScs in more specialised fields of study, from space engineering to mobile communications systems, and if you wish to specialise in one of these pathways you can adjust your course accordingly.

The advanced taught technical content is in sub-disciplines of electronic engineering closely aligned with the internationally-leading research conducted in the four research centres of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

This programme is studied full time over 12 months or can be part-time over 48 months. It consists of eight taught modules and a standard project.

Educational aims of the programme

The taught postgraduate Degree Programmes of the Department are intended both to assist with professional career development within the relevant industry and, for a small number of students, to serve as a precursor to academic research.

Our philosophy is to integrate the acquisition of core engineering and scientific knowledge with the development of key practical skills (where relevant). To fulfil these objectives, the programme aims to:

  • Attract well-qualified entrants, with a background in Electronic Engineering, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Computing & Communications, from the UK, Europe and overseas
  • Provide participants with advanced knowledge, practical skills and understanding applicable to the MSc degree
  • Develop participants' understanding of the underlying science, engineering, and technology, and enhance their ability to relate this to industrial practice
  • Develop participants' critical and analytical powers so that they can effectively plan and execute individual research/design/development projects
  • Provide a high level of flexibility in programme pattern and exit point
  • Provide students with an extensive choice of taught modules, in subjects for which the Department has an international and UK research reputation

A graduate from this MSc Programme should:

  • Know, understand and be able to apply the fundamental mathematical, scientific and engineering facts and principles that underpin electronic engineering
  • Be able to analyse problems within the field of electronic engineering and find solutions
  • Be able to use relevant workshop and laboratory tools and equipment, and have experience of using relevant task-specific software packages to perform engineering tasks
  • Know, understand and be able to use the basic mathematical, scientific and engineering facts and principles associated with the topics within electronic engineering
  • Be aware of the societal and environmental context of his/her engineering activities
  • Be aware of commercial, industrial and employment-related practices and issues likely to affect his/her engineering activities
  • Be able to carry out research-and-development investigations
  • Be able to design electronic circuits and electronic/software products and systems

Technical characteristics of the pathway

Students on the Programme may study (in the first two semesters) any four modules from the pool available to MSc students in semester 1 and any four modules from the pool available to MSc students in semester 2.

This enables the student to freely choose the combination of modules that will best suit their desired personal development and career aspirations.

With the aid of advice from a tutor they will also choose a combination of modules, which will typically be closely related to a specific discipline area being one of space systems, communication systems, wireless technologies, signal processing, integrated circuits or nanotechnology.

Additionally the project dissertation which the student will complete will be one which relates suitably to the area of the taught modules chosen by the student and as such it will be supervised by an academic from an appropriate research centre within the department.

The Design and Manufacturing Engineering MSc develops your knowledge and skills in mechanical engineering as well as materials and manufacturing engineering. You have the opportunity to undertake in-depth studies through your research projects.

This one year course is intended for honours graduates (or an international equivalent) in mechanical or mechanical-related engineering, maths, physics or a related discipline, eg automotive, aeronautical or design.

A two year MSc is also available for non-native speakers of English that includes a Preliminary Year.

The taught part of the course consists of major engineering themes such as:
-Sustainable energy management
-Manufacturing materials and processes
-Engineering design
-Computational methods
-Engineering software

Your project is chosen from an extensive range of subjects. Project work can range from fundamental studies in areas of basic engineering science to practical design, make and test investigations.

Recent areas for project work include:
-Design and manufacture
-Thermo-fluid dynamics
-Composite materials
-Bioengineering and biomaterials
-Microelectronic-mechanical systems
-Mathematical and computational engineering modelling

Some research may be undertaken in collaboration with industry.

The course is delivered by the School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering. The School has an established programme of research seminars. These are delivered by guest speakers from academia and industry (both national and international), providing excellent insights into a wide variety of engineering research.

Effective communication is an important skill for the modern professional engineer. This course includes sessions to help develop your ability, both through formal guidance sessions dedicated to good practice in report writing, and through oral/poster presentations of project work.

Delivery

The taught component of the course makes use of a combination of lectures, tutorials/labs and seminars. Assessment is by written examination and submitted in-course assignments.

The research project (worth 60 credits) is undertaken throughout the duration of the Masters course. Project work is assessed by dissertation and oral/poster presentations. You will be allocated, and meet regularly with, project supervisors.

Accreditation

The courses have been accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Facilities

The School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering is based in the Stephenson Building. It has both general and specialist laboratories and workshop facilities. These are used for training, course delivery and the manufacture of materials/components needed to support project work.

The Stephenson Building houses one of the largest networked computer clusters on campus (120+ PCs), which supports all of the specialist software introduced and used within the course (eg CAD, stress analysis, fluid dynamics, signal processing packages) in addition to the School’s own cluster (60+ PCs) used for instrumentation and data acquisition laboratories.
