This innovative programme has been developed to support, enhance and develop excellence in midwifery practice. The ultimate aim of this programme is to enable midwives and other health professionals providing maternity services to review, challenge and seek ways of improving the service in striving for excellence to ensure a world class maternity service, which responds effectively to consumer expectations.

Normally students are registered midwives with an honours degree. The emphasis is on clinical expertise and excellence in practice - you must therefore be able to implement your acquired skills in your clinical role. The Challenges of Implementing the Public Health Agenda module is open to other health professionals providing maternity services.

Students undertake core modules in the leadership and delivery of maternity services, evidence-based practice and healthcare research. In addition students select options from a range of areas including:

Other options from our BSc programme and modules from the MSc in Medical Ultrasound may also be available. Students who have already studied clinically focused modules at undergraduate or graduate level at King’s may be able to incorporate this study into the programme provided that the credits have not already contributed to an award. Modules studied elsewhere may be incorporated through accreditation of prior certificated learning (subject to a successful accreditation claim)

Course purpose

The aim of this master's in Advanced Practice is to equip you with an understanding of international, political, social and ethical issues of reproduction, and a scientific basis for examining maternity policy and practice. You will gain knowledge and understanding of the social and political context of reproduction and maternal health policy, evidence-based practice and research methods.

Practical experience

The programme comprises 50% practice and 50% theory. Practice placements are available throughout NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde; NHS Ayrshire and Arran; NHS Lanarkshire; NHS Highland and NHS Dumfries and Galloway. There is at least one placement outwith the acute maternity sector.

Your learning

Year 1:
Focuses on normality in the childbirth process, receiving specialist education in relation to life and social sciences, adaptation to pregnancy, and basic caring practical midwifery skills. You are introduced to midwifery practice during the pre-conceptual, prenatal, intranatal and postnatal periods; key public health issues; and professional, ethical and legal issues.

Year 2:
Focuses on the assessment, management, support and care for women with complex medical, obstetric and/or social ill-health and/ or needs during pregnancy, labour and/ or the postnatal period. Issues are examined around women’s emotional and mental health including eating disorders, suicide, and reaction to bereavement.

Year 3:
Further enhances your knowledge and understanding to advanced scholarship level within leadership and management frameworks. This enables you to challenge existing practice, develop new ideas, and work creatively and innovatively to advance practice. You will also undertake a dissertation project.

Professional recognition

Our campuses are equipped with artificial simulated environments with contemporary healthcare technology, where you’ll learn in a realistic context, to put your knowledge into practice. The unpredictability of patient symptoms are mimicked using sophisticated software in a clinical ward setting, ranging from low to high dependency beds.

Investment in the Domus Initiative – an older adult artificial home environment – provides you with experience in caring for older people and dementia care. In a first for the Scottish university sector, we have established A Community Orientated Resource for Nursing (ACORN) where students can practice within a simulated primary care environment.

Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses also provide midwifery students with excellent learning and teaching environments with facilities and equipment that includes a birthing room with maternal simulator and a birthing pool for simulated water births.

Teaching

This MA degree uses many different methods of teaching and learning. During your degree you will attend lectures, seminars and workshops, complete practical tasks, undertake a work placement and complete extended pieces of independent work under your tutor’s supervision.

The learning sessions will be interactive and practical and you are therefore expected to attend every class (be they workshops, seminars, tutorials, lectures or other sessions). In some cases, for example maternity or disability, we may make alternative arrangements for you.

Assessment

This MA programme is innovative in its use of a variety of methods of assessment. As well as developing essential research and essay/dissertation-writing skills, you will give a 15 minute seminar presentation on an area of your research, undertake a period of work placement (and produce a reflective report of the experience in the context of your academic and professional skills and career plans), and form a detailed research proposal (for the extended research project).

In part one, you will follow three core modules and complete the following assessments:

• Academic and Professional Research (40 credits) - seminar paper presentation, work experience report and research project outline

• Special Subject 1 (a subject of your choice related to Welsh and Celtic Studies) (40 credits) - critical review (2,000 words) + essay (6,000 words)

• Special Subject 2 (a subject of your choice related to Welsh and Celtic Studies) (40 credits) - essay (8,000 words)

In Part 2, you will work on an extended research project (60 credits) and complete a dissertation (12,000 words). This dissertation can take the form of an essay, project or creative portfolio.

COURSE SUMMARY

This practical course uses a work-based learning approach to develop the higher-level skills that will lead to advanced practitioner status.

This is a challenging and intense programme and allows experienced neonatal intensive care nurses to become qualified advanced neonatal nurse practitioners.

This 12 month course requires a high level of commitment to succeed and you will move from a nursing to a medical rota immediately upon qualification.  

You will achieve a number of clinical competencies such as advanced resuscitation skills, insertion of percutaneous long lines, insertion of umbilical and venous catheters, airway management and intubation and chest drains.

COURSE DETAILS

The programme may be commissioned by Health Education North West to meet the needs of a modernizing NHS. Upon completion you will be eligible for a non-medical advanced practitioner in Neonates to work within a junior medical rota.

TEACHING

You are expected to be flexible during the programme to facilitate your learning and clinical practice/experience:

  • During the first three months you will be introduced to new concepts, theories and medical management  including physiology, pathophysiology for neonates with in the maternity department and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • For the rest of the programme you will attend university and work in clinical practice
  • You will self-roster your off duty, clinical practice/experience within your tertiary intensive neonatal care unit (learning on the job)
  • You will be given a named supervisor (consultant neonatologist)
  • You must accrue a minimum of 720 clinical hours during your twelve months training

Simulation teaching will be undertaken in the university’s simulation suite and in the clinical area.

ASSESSMENT

You will be expected to undertake a series of assessments including a clinical portfolio, written assignments, OSCE, and supervised clinical practice by specialist registrars, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners and consultant neonatologists.

FACILITIES

Our Clinical Practice Wards are located in the Mary Seacole Building on the second floor. There are four rooms designed to give the look and feel of a hospital environment. The rooms are furnished with patient's beds, lockers, chairs, sinks and curtains as well as audio-visual equipment, internet and a teaching area.

We also have a number of clinical skills rooms that enhance student learning from taking blood pressure, to giving CPR and more complicated procedures. Along with nursing skills rooms where you can practice in a ward situation, there are basic skills rooms for sessions such as moving and handling.

Patient Simulators

The patient simulation laboratory provides you with the opportunity to tackle real-life scenarios in a safe and supported environment. Set up like a hospital ward, the lab contains hi-tech patient simulators that can mimic everything from the common cold to a major heart condition.

The equipment includes:

  • Emergency Care Patient Simulators: Anatomically correct, feature-rich mannequins, which can be used for the physical demonstration of various clinical signs including bleeding, breathing, blinking eyes and convulsions.
  • iStan Patient Simulators: A step up from the ECS, the iStan adds an essential human element to patient simulation. It moves, breathes, can cry out or moan with pain, providing a realistic patient for you to practice on
  • Pedia Patient Simulator: A complete reproduction of a six-year-old child enabling you to practice paediatric scenarios
  • Baby simulator: This mannequin makes it possible to interact with our most vulnerable patients - in a safe, realistic learning environment

All the simulation equipment can be linked up to some very hi-tech computer and audio-visual aids. Groups of students get to role-play a wide range of different scenarios, with a lab co-ordinator observing, running and intervening in the scenario remotely.

Sophisticated computer equipment can also provide detailed physiological information for each of the simulators under observation. The lab will help you develop the clinical skills you need but also the high level communication skills that will make a real difference to your patients.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Upon completion of this course, students will become advanced neonatal nurse practitioners and will work on a medical rota. Some students may also wish to progress onto a PhD or work as a nurse consultant or in a leadership role in clinical practice.

The University has state-of-the-art simulation facilities for clinical skills and simulation scenarios in a variety of high and low risk environments. A series of cameras project realistic images onto three walls of the room as well as onto the floor, while sounds can be piped into the room by specialist technicians working from a separate control room.

The room can be transformed into anything from the back of an ambulance transporting women between hospitals or from home to hospital or to a challenging environment such as a house boat where a woman has chosen to give birth.

The dedicated counselling suite with therapy and psychotherapy rooms can also be utilised for learning such as debriefing and coaching sessions.

Birth Simulators

We use a maternal and fetal simulation system called Sim Mom which allows you to appreciate the birthing experience from the onset of labour, through delivery, to treatment of the mother after the birth.

EMPLOYABILITY

Past students have gone on to take up posts as midwifery managers, educationalists and consultant midwives. Others have continued their studies at PhD level, for example undertaking the Professional Doctorate offered at this University.

This course in detail

The following midwifery courses are offered:
- a three-year midwifery programme for those with a first class honours degree plus Biology or Human Biology A level at grade B or above. Previous health care experience is desirable, but not essential.

- a 21-month post-experience master’s degree for experienced adult nurses registered with the NMC who have a first class honours degree.

The practice and educational content of the course is the same as the BSc course; however, assessment will be at master's level. This will enhance development of critical thinking skills which will prepare students for further postgraduate studies. In addition, Midwifery MSc students will have the opportunity to undertake primary research for their dissertation.

During Year 1, you will undertake level 6 modules. In years 2 and 3 you will study level 7 modules.

We have a number of both promising and experienced researchers working in established areas including maternal and women's public health, cancer care, children and families, drugs and alcohol, physical rehabilitation and enablement, and interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Over the past few years, these researchers have won external research and consultancy contracts including grants, fellowships and studentships for NHS staff. Our research staff collaborate with researchers from across Oxford Brookes University and from the Institute of Health Sciences at the University of Oxford, along with research teams from many other UK and international centres.

Academic facilities

Our specialist Clinical Skills Centre at our Northampton Square Campus has been designed to give students a safe environment in which to practise their clinical and caring skills.

We have a range of specialist equipment that is used to simulate birthing situations from normal to emergency, to enable you to develop the skills you need no-matter the birthing situation you are supporting.

You will have access to a simulated 6-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment; laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow students to rehearse their skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and women’s homes.

Teaching and learning

A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including institution-based taught modules, e-learning and work-based learning. Modules are run by experienced practitioners and leading researchers, using a variety of direct and interactive teaching methods. Students will learn in large and small multidisciplinary groups and will be supported and encouraged to participate in independent learning.

A variety of assessment methods are used to assess the course learning outcomes. The choice of assessment method will be influenced by the focus and learning outcomes of the modules. Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, reports, seminar presentations, skills schedules and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

The programme is taught using a variety of learning techniques.  These vary depending upon the modules and will include:

This programme is designed for midwives, nurses and other healthcare practitioners with an interest in maternal and child health. You will explore the issues surrounding maternal and child health and have a widespread positive influence by developing the quality of maternal and child healthcare across the gradient of health inequality. Part-time online delivery enables you to study at your convenience.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council approved Supervisor of Midwives Programme and the module Effective Clinical Practitioner and Motivational Enhancement Skills have some class sessions at Paisley or Lanarkshire campuses. Student support is actively encouraged via online or by face-to-face meeting.

Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice Course Structure

The Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice course is a flexible part-time degree and students can study a maximum of 60 credits per year and complete in not less than 36 months and no more than 5 years including submission of the dissertation. Most students will be in full time employment and this programme allows them to undertake postgraduate studies whilst they are working.

The first module students will study is SHGM90 Starting your Professional Practice. In addition to this module and SHGM91 Personal Practice Development Portfolio, students will undertake SHMM01 Leadership and Professional Issues in Midwifery or SHMM00/SHMM02 Developing Expertise in the Supervision of Midwives, as an additional core module.

Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice students may also access up to 30 credits from the College of Human and Health Sciences’ postgraduate catalogue of modules. To be awarded the MSc Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice, the student must achieve 180 credits at level 7 which must include the three core modules.

Delivery of the Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice programme is a tripartite arrangement between the student, personal tutor and practice facilitator. Learning for each work-based module is based on the development of a learning contract and consequently the following process will be adopted for each module.

Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice students who do not wish to complete the full MSc have alternative exit qualifications:

- Students will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice on successful completion of 60 credits at level 7.

- Students will be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice on successful completion of 120 credits at level 7.

The Midwifery team has a strong background in academic support at all levels. For this programme the academic supervision and support is given by Midwifery lecturers experienced in work based learning. The support is offered through a combination of individual tutorials and Action Learning Sets in groups.
