The MSc will take you between two and two and half years of full-time study or up to four years part time. In the first year of your MSc you'll take several courses related to your specialist subject area. Next, you'll carry out in-depth supervised research for 12–15 months and write a thesis. During your studies you might also author publications for peer-reviewed journals.

To do an MSc you'll need a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field, with an average grade of B+ or higher in your subject area. You may also be able to qualify for entry if you have appropriate work or other experience.

Programmes

Master of Laws by coursework

You'll take one core course—Advanced Legal Study LAWS 581 worth 10 points—and make up the rest of your 120 points from a choice of other 500-level LAWS courses. Up to 40 points can be replaced by equivalent courses from another faculty or another university.

500-level LAWS courses differ from year to year and are either taught in block format, intensive format or seminars. Look at the course timetable to see when the intensive and block courses are offered. The seminar courses are mainly led by you and the other students who will prepare papers in advance.

Internship

International students can also choose to do a 20-point one-trimester internship. You'll work with a community, government or private sector organisation under the joint supervision of a Faculty member and an outside professional. Assessment is based on the work you produce, a journal and your performance at fortnightly seminars.

Master of Laws by dissertation and coursework

You'll take LAWS 581 Advanced Legal Study (10 points), a further 20 points from the Master of Laws course-selection and LAWS 592, a 90-point dissertation of 35,000 words.

Master of Laws by research portfolio

This is a more flexible combination of coursework and research on an approved topic. You'll take the 10-point Advanced Legal Study LAWS 581 and the 90-point Research Portfolio LAWS 593.

The research portfolio consists of two courses that include two research papers of 12,000 words each on related topics. You'll also complete a 2,500-word linking paper to establish and justify your research, as well as a further 20 points from Master of Laws courses.

Flexible study

Designed to be flexible, the Master of Laws offers courses that are taught in different formats. Some courses meet weekly, others are taught in a more compact format.

Block courses are taught in a concentrated manner over a one-to-two week period, and intensive courses are broken into chunks of eight to twelve hours. They are often taught over two-to-three consecutive evenings or in Friday afternoon and Saturday sessions, with a break of two-to-three weeks between sessions.

Workload and duration

The Master of Laws can be completed in one year of full-time study, or in up to three years part time.

OUTLINE OF THE PROGRAM

The proposed master program aims at training students in fundamental, both theoretical and experimental, physics with applications in photonics, nanotechnology, and quantum technologies. This combination, innovative at the level of a master program, is well aligned with priority investments in research at the European and international level, with thematic areas of growing demand for highly trained students, able to embark in a doctoral programme. This two-year master programme, fully taught in English for international students, is part of the Graduate School of Sciences of the University Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC). It consists in both lessons and research project (3 month during the first year) / internship (5 months during the second year). This training program will be based on the internationally highly recognised research activities of the underlying laboratories ICB, Dijon and FEMTO-ST, Besançon.

OUR MASTER PROGRAM

This two-year master programme, fully taught in English for international students, combines macroscopic with nano- and quantum-scale topics. The programme aims at developing and improving students’ skills in fundamental optical physics, optical fibre communications, optoelectronics, laser technologies, ultrafast femtosecond optics, quantum information science, nanophotonics, nano-microscopy and nano-biosciences. FUTURE CAREER PROSPECTS

Photonics is a very dynamic industrial sector in Europe and holds the potential for huge market growth. It has a substantial leverage effect on the European economy and workforce: 20-30% of the economy and 10% of the workforce depend on photonics, directly impacting around 30 million jobs. The master program offers intensive educational activities based on research activities of photonics, including nanophotonics and quantum technologies. It focuses on fundamental & applied research mainly targetting PhD programs, which will lead to recruitment in academia or in industry. The two-year master program takes place at the University of Burgundy-Franche Comté, located in the scenic cities of Dijon & Besançon. The former capital city of the Duchy of Burgundy, Dijon is a medium-size French city, where you can enjoy a vibrant and active cultural life, as well as quick getaways to the countryside and the world famous neighbouring vineyards of the so-called “Golden coast” (city center, climates of the Burgundy vineyard, and gastronomy listed as world heritage sites in Dijon by Unesco). The AIV Master is a 2-year international program designed to help students prepare their career in science and to find their way in research. At AIV, we believe that the future of Biology-related disciplines lies in the interaction with the other sciences - Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering and so on. We teach students to speak a common language of science, and to interact with experts from different fields in order to tackle research questions with a multifaceted, comprehensive approach.

Course content

Master 1

The first year of the AIV Master is designed to teach you primarily Systems, Synthetic and Computational Biology. The first semester is entirely devoted to full-time courses, in which students will also familiarize with the main tools that will help them study Life Sciences in an interdisciplinary way (Mathematical modelling, Physics, Statistics). After the core courses of the first semester, you will have the chance of learning through research with a 6-months internship in the lab of your choice. You can also choose to participate in the iGEM competition, an international competition in Synthetic Biology.

Master 2

The second year of the Master is designed to emphasizes training in scientific reasoning, critical analysis and project development. It includes a rotation of three 3-months research internships in labs of your choice, to give you the opportunity to taste different aspects of science, be trained in different disciplines and topics, and to let you build your own set of skills for whatever you choose to undertake after the end of your Master. Students joining directly in Master 2 have also the opportunity of following some courses of their choice from Master 1.

ORGANIZATION

The international Master in European Project Planning and Management has a total duration of 5 months (800 hours) organized as follows:

- 2 months of classroom based training and project work. The classroom based training has a duration of 8 hour a day, from 9.00 to 13.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00. The classroom based course is held in Florence (Italy). The classroom based part of the Master course is held at Pixel, in Florence (Italy).

- 3 months of internship, in public or private organizations. The intern works as an Assistant European project manager. The internship is held in one of the partner organizations based in one of the European Union’s member states.

METHODOLOGY

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have 15 to 25 years experience in European project planning, management, assessment and auditing.

Practical simulations are carried out for each topic analyzed. The objective of the practical activities is the simulation of the planning and management of European projects. At the end of the Master, every work group will have produced: a European project including the application form, budget, transnational partnership, administrative requirements, supporting documents etc.

INTERNSHIP

The Master offers the participants the opportunity to carry out a three month internship abroad in one of the European Union’s countries. The organizations hosting the students for the internship are all actively involved in European projects. Every student carries out the internship with the role of Assistant European Project Manager. The internship therefore gives the participants the opportunity to immediately put into practice the skills acquired through a direct involvement in the management of European projects.

 The Research Master: Master of Advanced Studies in Theology and Religion offers you a broad perspective on what theology and religious studies are all about. The (full-time or part-time) programme is offered by the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies which ever since its founding in 1432 has built a rich history and tradition. Guided by our world-renowned faculty members, whose individual areas of expertise span the breadth and depth of theology, you will learn to give shape to your own independence, and transform it into a project with the potential to lead into doctoral studies. And rest assured: research at Leuven is second to none. This is an Master's programme and can be followed on a full-time or part-time basis.

Structure

The 120-credits programme comprises the following:

  • Courses (60 credits): you take six courses of the truncus communis (24 credits), one inter disciplinary course (4 credits), three courses from three different majors outside your specialization major (12 credits), and five electives (20 credits).
  • A research master's thesis (32 credits): you will have two years to write a thesis in which you present the results of your study of an original research topic. The thesis must provide a structured and coherent survey of the issue while including an evaluation of research already undertaken and demonstrating evidence of an awareness of problems related to the topic.
  • major (28 credits): you take seven major courses (28 credits). The major can be selected from the research areas on offer at the faculty: Biblical Studies, Systematic Theology and the Study of Religions, Theological and Comparative Ethics, History of Church and Theology, Pastoral and Empirical Theology. 

International experience

The research master’s programme attracts students from all over the world, which adds a valuable intercultural element to your experience. The Faculty currently has students from more than sixty countries and thus from virtually every part of the globe. We also encourage students to participate in exchange programmes that allow them to spend a semester abroad. The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies has 68 agreements in 23 different countries within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. All of the Faculty’s programmes are taught in both Dutch and English.

The programme is offered by the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, which from its founding in 1432 has built a rich history and tradition. The Faculty focuses on training students and researchers in scientifically-based, and methodological reflection and application, where theology and religious studies mutually enrich one another. All of the Faculty’s programmes are taught in both Dutch and English and are open to students of every nationality. Outline of the program

The Master PICS program provides a comprehensive program of courses covering theoretical, experimental and engineering aspects of photonics, micro/nano technologies, time-frequency metrology, information theory and complex systems. It is delivered by the University of Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC) in the city of Besançon. It is designed to cover a selection of topics at the interface of physics and engineering sciences, closely integrated with domains of research excellence developed in the Region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté (BFC). The master’s program also provides complementary courses in disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge, as well as broad digital, societal, cultural, environmental, and entrepreneurial skills. It is open to students with undergraduate physics degrees, and it aims to provide complementary courses to prepare students for careers in either industry or for future PhD level studies. The PICS masters is strongly supported by the FEMTO-ST Institute and the ICB Laboratory, research institutions with major international reputations in Physical Sciences and Engineering. The PICS Master’s program has received a national label as a Master’s of Excellence for Engineering and Research, entitled CMI (“Cursus master en Ingénierie”) which is delivered by the CMI-FIGURE network which consists of 28 universities in France.

Our Master’s program

Photonics and nanotechnologies are one of the 6 Key Enabling Technologies identified by the European Commission as sources of innovation and competitiveness for the future. They are technological sectors that feed competitive and fast-growing markets (environment, health, automotive, safety, etc.) and there is a strong need for qualified graduates to support developing European Industry.  When compared to other French Masters programs in similar fields, the particular novelty of the Masters PICS is that it focuses on teaching multi-disciplinary skills on both the practical and fundamental level in a very wide range of topics: photonics, micro and nano-optics, quantum optics, micro-nanotechnologies, instrumentation, time-frequency metrology, micro-oscillators, micro- and nano-acoustics, bio-photonics, and complex systems.  

 

The FEMTO-ST and ICB Institutes are the underlying UBFC laboratories that support the master PICS program. The FEMTO-ST Institute in Besançon (http://www.femto-st.fr/en/), with more than 750 staff, is one of the largest laboratories in France in Engineering Sciences, having high international visibility in photonics, nanotechnology and time frequency technology. The ICB Institute in Dijon (icb.ubourgogne.fr/en/), with a staff of 300 people, is also an underlying UBFC laboratory of the PICS master’s. The PICS master’s program is based on the internationally highly recognized research activities of all these laboratories in photonics, micro & nanotechnologies, time-frequency and complex systems, with teaching and supervision being performed by renowned and highly qualified researchers (professors, assistant professors, or full-time CNRS researchers).

 

The courses, taught in English (see Teaching section), are divided between lectures, exercises/tutorials, practical labs and project activities. Students will be immersed in the labs from their 1st year of study, closely connected with the research groups via lab projects that will run throughout semester 1 to 3.  Individual supervision will be provided to all students, combining a personal project advisor and a mentor. 

 

A one-semester research internship in semester 4 can be carried out at FEMTO-ST, ICB, or a local or national industry partner. Students also have the possibility to obtain significant international experience by carrying out Master’s Internships (5-6 months) abroad at internationally-renowned universities having strong research collaborations with FEMTO-ST and ICB. The proposed PICS Master’s program is also based on strong interactions with high-tech industrial partners both at the local and international levels. 

 

Teaching

The PICS master’s program takes place over 2 academic years divided into 4 semesters. Each semester corresponds to an accreditation of 30 ECTS, which leads to a total at the end of 120 ECTS.  The program has an extensive international flavor, with all courses taught in English, except two modules of 3 ECTS in semesters 1 and 3 that will introduce French culture and language for foreign students, and organized in close connection with another master’s programs. We offer the opportunity to obtain French language certification (B2 at minimum).  The teaching staff are highly qualified researchers with international recognition and all teaching staff are fluent in English, with many at native or near-native level.

Future Career prospects

Photonics and micro/nano technologies are very dynamic industrial sectors in Europe and hold the potential for huge market growth. It has a substantial leverage effect on the European economy and workforce: 20-30% of the economy and 10% of the workforce depend on photonics, directly impacting around 30 million jobs.

The master program offers intensive educational activities based on high level research activities in these domains. It focuses on fundamental & applied research mainly targeting careers in industry (R&D engineer) or for future PhD level studies either in academic institution or industry.

Student profile

Students eligible to the master PICS program must have obtained a degree equivalent to or higher than a Bachelor of Science. Background knowledge in general physics, optics, electromagnetism, electronic and quantum physics is mandatory. Candidates must have very good academic qualifications and a very good practice of English.

Besançon is a historical town with a strong university community, and is consistently voted as having an excellent quality of life. It is home to a UNESCO-World Heritage listed citadel and fortifications, and is well known for its proximity to an excellent range of outdoor pursuits including hiking, mountain-biking, skiing and rock-climbing.

Organised by the International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) in partnership with three universities, De Montfort University in Leicester (England), SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan (Italy) and the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland), and endorsed by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the FIFA Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport was created to promote management education within the sports world. The FIFA Master takes its graduates on a unique journey through three different European countries to study sport.
