Mass Communications at LJMU’s School of Humanities and Social Science considers issues of communicative power in a range of contexts to highlight their historical development and explore their continued relevance within a contemporary digital media environment.

An integral part of this MA programme is the year-long Research Methods module. This module introduces you to important methodological approaches pertinent to the study of mass communications and provides you with a grounding in key skills required for study at masters level.

In addition you will study Theories, Concepts and Debates in Mass Communications which looks at enduring issues such as the impact of mass media (within advertising, radio, print propaganda and TV broadcasting) on audiences.

The production and reception of contemporary mass communications is also explored in depth during the Digital Cultures module in which you will critically analyse research on digital media audiences, paying attention to research on web-based communication and the activities of fans. This module also features a distinctive collaborative project involving Tate Liverpool. Here you will critically review the ways that the Tate Gallery’s current exhibitions are being marketed to the general public, liaising with the gallery’s marketing team and paying particular attention to their online promotions.

You will study the quickly evolving area of new media by analysing contemporary media policies and considering the potential future direction of national and international media regulation. You will also put your knowledge of the contemporary media landscape into practice through the construction of a portfolio of digital writing, which requires you to reflect on the process of online communication in different international contexts.

Finally, your Dissertation study involves original research and enables you to incorporate reflections on your own professional practice, either through conducting a work placement or by utilising opportunities within your existing employment if you so wish.

The MA in Journalism & Media Communication aims to bridge theory and practice in a dynamic interplay as the programme works to develop a wide ranging portfolio of skills. Staff teaching on the modules will be drawing synergies between various Media subjects. There will also be a focus on current media practice and the technologies of convergence exploring the impact of digital environments on the communications industries.

The course aims to develop professional and academic skills in the area of Journalism and Media Communications. Therefore, the programme will explore how to make communication more effective in professional settings by looking at magazine journalism and its associated business models, internal and external corporate communications, the impact of technology on the communications industries, and developing an understanding of ethical responsibilities and current legislation for media professionals. After completing the work placement, students will write a 3.500 word report and give a short presentation reflecting on his or her experience.

Dr Sarah Ralph is a lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies, and her expertise lies in the realm of empirical methods and approaches to the study of production cultures, media audiences and reception.

Dr Ibrahim Seaga Shaw has a background as a reporter, editor, sub editor and correspondent in Sierra Leone, France and the UK, and brings real-life issues to the classroom.

Dr Gabriel Moreno practiced journalism for 13 years, including as a general and financial news correspondent with Reuters news agency in Mexico City. He was awarded a PhD in Journalism and Mass Communication from Westminster University and is currently involved in research projects involving new media and migration, and social media and environmental communication. He became a fellow of the UK’s Higher Education Academy in December 2015.

Teaching And Assessment

You’ll learn through a mix of theory and practice, including taught sessions, field trips, lectures, seminars and group assignments.

You’ll discover the theories and issues informing real-work examples within a range of media and cultural industries and then put these to use in workshop activities which reinforce the links between theory and practice. You will be encouraged to develop your communication skills by taking an active part in seminars.

The dissertation module provides an opportunity for you to put learning into practice by designing, executing and writing up an original piece of research on a topic negotiated between you and your dissertation supervisor.

At a time when ideas about freedom of expression, democracy, human rights and access to natural and material resources guide development projects across the world, the question about the role of media and communications for social change becomes ever more pertinent. As a result, this MA will particularly appeal to you if you have an interest in communication studies and cross-disciplinary interests in development studies, sociology and politics.

Objectives

The International Communications and Development MA provides will help you to:

  • Gain an overview of the main issues in the field on International Communications and Development.
  • Develop a broad interdisciplinary overview of developments in broadcasting, telecommunications, the press and information technology.

Teaching and learning

You will learn through a combination of lectures, interactive sessions, practical workshops and small-group classes supported by a personal tutorial system. You are encouraged to undertake extensive reading in order to understand the topics covered in lectures and classes and to broaden and deepen your knowledge of the subject. In the course of self-directed hours, you are expected to read from the set module bibliography, prepare your class participation, collect and organise source material for your coursework, and plan and write your coursework.

The Department also runs a personal tutorial system, which provides support for teaching and learning and any problems can be identified and dealt with early.

During the second term the Department offers a Dissertation Workshop to guide you on your dissertation outline.

Assessment and Assessment Criteria

You will submit a 2,500-word essay for each 15-credit module and 3,000-word essay for each 30-credit module. You will also submit a dissertation.

Assessment Criteria are descriptions, based on the intended learning outcomes, of the skills, knowledge or attitudes that you need to demonstrate in order to complete an assessment successfully. This provides a mechanism by which the quality of an assessment can be measured.

Grade-related criteria are descriptions of the level of skills, knowledge or attributes that you need to demonstrate in order achieve a certain grade or mark in an assessment. This provides a mechanism by which the quality of an assessment can be measured and placed within the overall set of marks.

Assessment Criteria and Grade-Related Criteria will be made available to you to help you complete assessments. These may be provided in programme handbooks, module specifications, on the virtual learning environment or attached to a specific assessment task.

Feedback on assessment

Feedback will be provided in line with our Assessment and Feedback Policy. In particular, you will normally be provided with feedback within three weeks of the submission deadline or assessment date. This would normally include a provisional grade or mark.

In order to pass your programme, you should complete successfully or be exempted from the relevant modules and assessments and will therefore acquire the required number of credits.

The course focuses on the relationship between communication, development and democracy. Over the course of the year you will develop your knowledge of media and communication studies within the context of globalisation, Political communication and the work of international organisations and non-governmental organisations in development communication.

Customer engagement is increasingly key with the benefits of ‘big data’ providing detailed analytics for campaigns. Media planning is becoming more scientific and measurable, moving customers up the loyalty ladder to generate content for brands. Advertising is the catalyst to delivering integrated campaigns and Southampton Solent’s MA Advertising and Multimedia Communications programme prepares students for making a strategic contribution.

Recognising the close relationship with marketing and public relations, the course focuses on emerging forms of advertising which blur the boundaries with journalism and the importance of content marketing. Teaching is delivered by a team of industry professionals and the course covers the development of contemporary integrated marketing campaigns.

As the roles of multimedia advertising management, digital newsroom manager, marketing professional, and corporate PR manager are converging, students are encouraged to develop a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, and will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience by preparing campaigns for live client briefs. Students are also encouraged to seek work-placement and freelance opportunities through the University’s student run agency, Solent Creatives, as well as prepare competition briefs for the Design & Art Directors Association (D&AD) and the Young Creative Network (YCN).

Graduates from this course will be well placed to pursue careers in national or international advertising agencies in roles such as account management, media and communications officer, or creative director.

This course is ideally suited to those who are looking to further their career in the advertising and communications industry. The curriculum will appeal to students with a particular interest in the integration of advertising, marketing, PR and journalism to create innovative strategic campaigns. 

What you will study

Year one

Advertising in a World of Converging Communication (30 credits)

This unit covers contemporary advertising practice and theory combining traditional mass media approaches with emerging social media and mobile channels. This unit develops practical skills and a critical awareness of the issues and practices within advertising in a world where increasingly the target audience can skip ads and brands combine paid, owned, earned and shared media to engage consumers. After introducing advertising principles, the unit moves on to explore the digital mix, content marketing, native advertising and immersive, augmented experiences. The traditional advertising roles of art director, copywriter, account manager and media planner are still important industry pathways but are increasingly challenged by agile practice, this unit considers the implications. Assessments are designed to test application of your learning in both theory and practice. 

Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits)

Students get the practical opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.

Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits)

This unit introduces students to the challenge of measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement)

Research Methods (15 credits)

This unit raises the students’ research skills to Master’s level, including SPSS and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest (Shared Unit)

Professional Practice (30 credits)

This unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a PDP, which forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project- and informs the student’s choice of Major Project or dissertation

Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits)

The culmination of the MA degree, where the theory and practice learned in the previous units informs the student’s principal learning outcome- a campaign that demonstrates their professional attainment or a dissertation that critically examines a crucial industry issue, generating original thinking. Both project and dissertation require primary research to a master’s level.

Students will have access to a range of specialist facilities throughout their studies, including Mac computers, professional creative software, digital printing facilities, and traditional printing presses.

Solent also provides a comprehensive media loans scheme, giving students access to high-end photographic equipment.

Industry links

The course is taught by industry experts who have established practitioner careers and who have strong links within the industry. Students have the opportunity to work on live client briefs and are encouraged to gain a work placement or freelance project.

Past students on the University’s creative advertising courses have benefitted from visits to London-based advertising and creative agencies.

Students who are in work while taking the course have the opportunity to adapt the topic of their assignments in several units to suit the needs of their employers.

Placements

The Professional Practice unit requires students to undertake a work placement or complete a freelance project. Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The minimum requirement for a placement is two weeks, however placements and projects can vary in length, depending on client needs.

These are all disciplines within themselves which you rapidly acquire skills and knowledge to manage successfully. These are essential disciplines to many known high street brands, service industries, online businesses and high growth start ups which ensure that if you start a business using existing skills or a new team that you are likely to provide a high growth enterprise very quickly. Alternatively you may have been employed within a sector undergoing a real transformation to prevent threat to business existence which involves you in making changes very quickly at operational level using the range of disciplines you learn.

In this situation you can overcome the threats quickly to ensure long term viability whilst managing short term risks to business and you can be a very sought after individual due to your ability to quickly assess what needs to be done with minimum impact to allow long term profitability. Many brands have recently been disrupted by mass communications and the rapid rise in online trading, some were able to quickly re-organise their business model to avoid going out of business, some were able to innovate and others relied on a wide variety of techniques to allow them to reinvent themselves. Aberdeen MBA - On Campus

The Aberdeen University MBA is a one year full-time management programme which covers all the main disciplines of business management. You take leading edge modules during our intensive summer school, which is run by visiting scholars, as well as our own expert staff at the University of Aberdeen Business School. In drawing upon the international expertise of research-active staff, the programme promotes the development of cross-disciplinary knowledge in preparing students for effective management careers in both the private and public sectors. You can take this programme over a year full time or two years part time with September or January start.

You may be able to continue working whilst you study, but there is also an online option which may help you manage your time much better whilst studying (below)

As an integral part of successfully completing the Dissertation component, students take part in a two-term Research Skills module. Here we cover topics such as:

This course examines the role of public relations in shaping media output both within media organisations themselves and in relation to the external impact of PR on the media.

The field of public relations has grown dramatically in the past 20 years and this has had profound implications for the media and other institutions that rely on the media to disseminate knowledge.

This course will investigate the rise of public relations and its links with global media institutions from historical perspectives and in relation to the contemporary media landscape. It will offer a critical examination of the role of PR in the mediation of power as well as the role of public relations in a range of media arenas.

You will be encouraged to reflect critically and theoretically on the function of PR in relation to: the role of the media in political communication, media policy, celebrity culture, film marketing, alternative media, media campaigning, and new media technologies.

You will be offered the opportunity to plan PR campaigns and reflect on their role in the knowledge economy.

This combination will provide you with the opportunity to examine the context in which PR practice takes place and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to work ethically in PR at an international level.

The Media and Public Relations MA is taught through lectures, seminars, workshops, screenings and industry speakers.

Assessment

The MA will be assessed through a combination of essays, reports, case studies, campaign design and a dissertation.

Special Features

The academic study of public relations and the media is very new and this MA puts us at the forefront of this development. Most of the MAs in Britain either focus on corporate public relations and are either predominantly practical or are theoretical courses that sit within more traditional mass communications curriculum and focus on the important area of political communications and the news media. Our
MA is innovative because it combines theory and practice.

Also innovative is our combined examination of the impact of public relations on the media and the use of public relations practices within media organisations including film, TV and other news organisations, with particular reference to their promotional cultures. This provides students with a broad and advanced understanding of the relationship between public relations and the media.

We have experts teaching on the course with both theoretical and practical experience.

This programme has grown out of the research interests and expertise of the team, giving it a distinctive character.

The focus on PR within the media will range from that of large corporations to smaller-scale, alternative forms including ‘DIY’ practices employed directly by lower-budget producers via social media and other online channels, key areas of contemporary development in PR and marketing more generally.

Information Systems Evaluation and Integration Group

Academics who teach on this exciting programme are part of the Information Systems Evaluation and Integration Group which is a research centre of excellence that supports a number of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded networks and projects. This group is housed in the Brunel Business School in collaboration with the excellent-rated (RAE score 5) School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics. ISEing is the first multi-disciplinary research group to receive government funding in the areas of Information Systems Evaluation, Enterprise Integration and eGovernment.

Teaching

The course is structured so that full-time students take four 15 credit modules per term, plus a 60 credit dissertation module in term 3. Each 15 credit module demands 150 hours of study comprised of 22 hours of tutor arranged contact time and a minimum of 128 hours of non-contact student managed time. Each module has its own form of assessment held at the end of the term in which the module runs, and can include essays, projects and group assignments. The dissertation is an extended research oriented task conducted individually and offers the opportunity for students to undertake in-depth investigation in to a topic of their choosing. Students may choose to develop a project in collaboration with an industrial partner, which can be focused on business solutions of practical relevance (rather than theoretical research).

Modes of Study

1-year full-time in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

1-year full-time in January: The taught element of the programme includes 8 modules which are delivered in two terms (four in January to April, and four in September to December); delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. The dissertation is undertaken May to August, and then can be completed January to March after the second teaching term.

Graduate School Workshops

In addition to the events and training sessions organised within the Business School, master's students have exclusive access to the workshops and skills training provided by the Brunel University’s Graduate School.
