How can you obtain knowledge about what your customer really wants? How can you implement this knowledge in a financially sound marketing plan? How can insights from marketing research be used in marketing plans?

Truly market-oriented (marketing) managers need customer insights to guide decision-making on issues such as which markets to target, which new products to develop, and what communication themes and channels will best build customer and brand equity.

In the Groningen programme the focus is on customer relations and gaining insight into customers. You will learn to collect qualitative and quantitative data about customers and to analyze it using the latest and most advanced marketing research methods.

In the Oslo programme the focus is on strategic marketing theory, statistical methods and financial implications of marketing investments. In both programmes, practitioners in the field relate theory to practice.

Teaching and assessment

We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, class discussions and case study exercises. You will be placed in a Peer Learning Support Group (PLSG) to encourage mutual study support with your fellow students.

Compared to an undergraduate course, you will find that this Masters course requires a higher level of independent working.

Facilities & location

This course is based on the banks of the River Wear at The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. Recently we’ve developed a Student Learning Space that is specifically designed to facilitate collaboration and team-based projects. It includes a board room as well as bookable areas to hold meetings and to meet with staff and visitors from outside the University.

The St Peter’s Library contains over 31,000 books related to business, economics, management, human resources, marketing, strategy and tourism.

Added to this, you’ll benefit from a wide range of journals and periodicals in the St Peter’s Library, many of them in online format. To help you make the most of the wealth of resources there’s a full-time librarian who is dedicated to the Business and Tourism sections.

MSc Marketing with Brand Management

The MSc Marketing with Brand Management is a specialist, 12-month full-time taught postgraduate course. This course provides a stronger focus on the specifics of developing and using brands and branding in the marketing context. All students will register for the MSc Course in Marketing in the first instance and be given the opportunity to change degree pathway at the end of the first semester.
The course is modular, so the credits awarded at the end of each assessed module can be accumulated towards a postgraduate qualification. Students of Marketing with Brand Management study three core topics in the Autumn Semester before deciding on their final course of study. In the Spring Semester MSc Marketing with Brand Management students have to apply this knowledge through a project undertaken for an external company and through an appreciation of Contemporary Issues in Marketing. To specialise in Brand Management students must also complete the modules on Brand Marketing and Digital marketing and Advertising and undertake an individual dissertation or group research project in the field of Branding.

COURSE CONTENT

The first year of the Master is a fulltime year in Grenoble or London.
The program covers four key areas of study for Marketers, each of the 19 modules follow a logical connection to the one before.

The content of the program may be adapted from year to year to take into account the needs of industry. Class attendance is compulsory.

Integrative Marketing Case Study

Using an existing business, the “Live Business Case” will provide the students with the opportunity to pull together all the aspects of the program. Students will analyze a marketing problem in the Company and use their skills and knowledge to solve issues and propose solutions. This takes place in small groups and in a limited time. Assessment for the case study will be based on a group assignment with a group presentation to the Company.

At the end of the one-year full time part of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length, under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study. This will be business oriented and coherent with your program's objectives. A student may choose to write his/her project on a topic grounded in his/her internship experience.

This course is designed to help you develop the knowledge, specialist skills and attitudes necessary for a successful career in the exciting and fast moving area of international marketing. It will also enhance your ability to think strategically about marketing management in an international context.

Northampton Integrated Learning Environment (NILE) is a dedicated online university learning space for students. Your tutors will use NILE to engage with you, and you will use NILE to access course materials, assessment information, virtual classrooms and discussion boards. Your assessed work will be submitted and graded online, so you will be able to see your grades and feedback wherever you are in the world. The system that underpins NILE is Blackboard and access to this system is through nile.northampton.ac.uk. We also have a mobile app so you can stay connected to the University of Northampton wherever you are; iNorthampton is available for Android and Apple mobile devices.​

Course content

Core learning will be delivered electronically and you will be encouraged to engage with your fellow students and tutors online. Studying online will give you the flexibility to study at your convenience* without the need to travel or physically attend classes, whilst enhancing your employment opportunities. You will be supported throughout the process by our great teaching staff that are professionally qualified and have industry and academic experience to share with you.​

*Modules are delivered within trimester periods so you will need to complete them in specified times.

This programme is 30 months in duration. The academic year is split into trimesters. For a September start you will study as follows;

Trimester five – January to April

You will study two modules; Strategic Digital Marketing and Dissertation and Research Methods. You will commence work on your Dissertation. ​

Trimester six – May to July

You will study two modules; International Marketing Communications and Dissertation and Research Methods. You will continue work on your Dissertation. ​

Trimester seven – September to December

You will complete your Dissertation.​

The course will be suitable for graduates motivated by the desire to launch a career or develop an existing one in the marketing field. This means that you will not be content to merely be presented with sets of theories and principles of marketing, but also expect to be given ample opportunity to critically evaluate the usefulness of these theories and principles in practice, especially in relation to your own particular needs.

The MSc Strategic Marketing will provide this opportunity in a number of ways, from case studies, projects through to the final thesis orientated assessment. ​Course Content​​

The programme comprises of three distinct stages, Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) Marketing, Postgraduate Diploma (PGDIP) Marketing, and MSc Marketing, with a range of compulsory taught modules (120 credits), and a non-taught element (60 credits). The MSc will be awarded on successful completion of 180 credits.

Term 1:
Certificate = Completing 60 credits:
- Understanding the Behavioural elements of Marketing: Knowing Your Consumer (20 credits)
- Polycentric Marketing Strategies: Going International 20 credits)
- Modern Marketing Research (20 credits).

Term 2:
Diploma = Completion of stage 1 and an additional 60 credits:
- E, Digital Marketing and Competitive Intelligence (20 credits)
- Effective Advertising for Competitive Advantage (20 credits)
- Academic Research for Business (20 credits).

Term 3:
Masters = Completion of stages 1 & 2 and:
- Dissertation (60 credits).

Learning & Teaching​

​The course is delivered with a mixture of lectures and seminars. Many of the assessments will be based on real world cases and therefore specialist guest speakers and visits to businesses will also form part of the learning journey. At Master’s level, self-management and independent research and study is expected with students being directed and encouraged to deepen their understanding of particular areas of Marketing. Moodle is used as an interactive VLE but the development of a learning community is particularly prevalent at Cardiff Metropolitan with excellent student support. ​

Modular structure

You are required to complete three of the four modules:

2. Mastering Metrics (mandatory)

You are exempt from the Strategic Marketing module on the new syllabus if you have previously completed Marketing Planning Process and Managing Marketing after 2008 as part of the previous diploma.

After the course

You will acquire skills and understanding to perform at management level, and students have gone on to become heads of marketing at a wide range of organisations, such as market intelligence specialist S&P Global, international construction company Mace Group, and the charity Cancer Research UK.

Attendance options

Typically students complete this course in twelve to eighteen months but the new modular pathway qualification has been structured to reflect the need for a flexible approach. Therefore each module can also be taken as a self-contained award which can be built up to attain the full certificate.

Evening classes take place at our Moorgate campus from 6pm - 9pm. These can be taken as a full course or as a self-contained award. There are seven weekend classes.
