All of our Marketing MSc courses share six core modules (Moving to Masters, Critical Developments in Marketing Theory and Practice, Marketing Planning and Strategy, Marketing Research I: quantitative methods, Marketing Research II: qualitative methods, and a dissertation).

This specialist route includes one subject-specific module (Social Marketing), but you can also select from a range of optional modules which enable you to tailor the course to your interests and career aspirations.

In the final phase of the course, you will complete a 15,000-word dissertation on a marketing topic of your choice, which will require you to make recommendations for real-life marketing practice. Course structure

The course is organised into three-hour blocks of teaching and seminar activities, which are based on specialist reading, research and case studies. Modules are assessed through essays, reports, group work, presentations and examinations.

All of our Marketing MSc courses share six core modules (Moving to Masters, Critical Developments in Marketing Theory and Practice, Marketing Planning and Strategy, Marketing Research I: quantitative methods, Marketing Research II: qualitative methods, and a dissertation).

This specialist route includes one subject-specific module (Branding and Communications), but also shares a range of optional modules which enable you to tailor the course to your interests and career aspirations.

In the final phase of the course, you will complete a 15,000-word dissertation on a marketing topic of your choice, which will require you to make recommendations for real-life marketing practice. Throughout your dissertation, you will receive support from a supervisor who will help to guide you in your research.

This is an opportunity for you to develop your business insight and present your analysis and ideas in a scholarly and professional manner; combine critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the opinions of others.

If your ambitions lie beyond the UK, we offer a number of places on our unique Dissertation Abroad scheme. This will involve writing a dissertation at one of our international partner institutions in the period June to August. A number of scholarships are available

The programme is a ‘skills’ based degree containing 8 marketing and finance modules and a short focused business report. The structure of the report has been developed following feedback from employers who indicate that they prefer graduates who are able to write concisely, accurately and clearly in a focused report rather than write in the style of a lengthy and less focused dissertation.

The programme begins with a two week foundation programme where students become familiar with a range of concepts in business, statistics, economics and finance. The programme helps students to understand how the University operates and how to make the most of the range of student services that are freely available. The foundation programme importantly introduces you to your fellow students who will become a major part of your learning experience at Dundee and will continue to be part of your network of friends and business connections after you graduate.

Off-Campus Learning Events: The programme includes off campus learning events embedded in the modules of some of the modules. These events aim to extend your leaning skills in ways that are directly relevant to the pathway and your personal development. These off campus events are one or two days in length and the cost of the transport, event and any necessary accommodation is covered by the MSc programme. The MSc in Marketing provides graduates, professionals or consultants with critical insights into marketing, and the marketing management practices of national and international organisations.

This course offers students the opportunity to understand traditional and contemporary marketing philosophies and theories adopted by practitioners, based on knowledge gained from academic research and industrial practices.

The programme will develop critical and creative skills, procedural thinking and expertise that enable students to generate, implement and evaluate organisational activities that satisfy the requirements of their employer and the customers.

Aims

MSc Marketing is designed for anyone wishing to become a marketing professional or planning to undertake research in an academic, consultancy or commercial setting.

Those with little or no marketing experience will appreciate the breath of management subjects covered in the degree, specifically how marketing fits within organisation practice.

This programme offers an excellent preparation for a career in marketing or associated fields and in a myriad of organisations employing marketing professions.

Teaching

As a research active university, international level research findings by Brunel Business School tutors are regularly used in lectures. Tutors on this programme are leaders in the field of management and active researchers within one of the six centres of research within the School.

Modes of Study

1-year full-time in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

1-year full-time in January: The taught element of the programme includes 8 modules which are delivered in two terms (four in January to April, and four in September to December); delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. The dissertation is undertaken May to August, and then can be completed January to March after the second teaching term.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examinations place considerable stress on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design and execute a major project.

Individual and/or group presentations using laptops, PCs and digital projectors.

This course focuses on events marketing, defined as the use of events for marketing purposes. In a competitive marketing environment, organisations are now marketing through events, whereby events are used as an integral part of the marketing communications mix. The event is not the end itself, but a means to achieve a product’s or brand’s marketing objectives. Events marketing is, thus, part of the experiential marketing domain, defined as the strategy of achieving marketing objectives through personal experiences which allow customers to engage and interact with brands, products, and services.

You'll learn about the most recent developments in a range of critical areas of events marketing such as sponsorship/branding, new media campaigns (guerrilla and ambush), PR stunts and virtual events. All aspects of marketing communications are discussed to enable you to prepare an integrated events marketing communications plan. You'll start the course by developing a sound understanding of management principles and the events industry; understand the strategic, finance and organisational context in which organisations operate. This will help you come up with events marketing solutions that satisfy the organisation’s marketing communication briefs.

A number of specialist knowledge areas are covered, including a comprehensive overview of marketing and the migration towards the integrated management of marketing communications. As an academically-driven course, you'll learn to evaluate a range of theories and models for events marketing.

As part of the course, you will have the opportunity to take exams for the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing and upon successful completion of the exams become a professional member of the Digital Marketing Institute.

Accredited internship

All students on our full-time business Masters courses can apply to undertake the PG/MBA Internship Programme Reflective Practitioner Module. This is an 8 week unpaid accredited internship, which can be taken in addition to option modules and will help students to gain invaluable work experience. The internships, which are with London-based organisations, take place during the summer period. To apply, students must submit a completed application form and a copy of their updated CV to the Business Experience Team; the team then shortlist from the applications and conduct group meetings with the applicants.

Ultimately it is up to our internship employers to decide whether they would like to interview the candidate(s) and offer him/her an internship. We have received very positive feedback from both postgraduate students and employers and expect that the internship programme will continue to remain popular amongst our students.

Work Placement

Gain hands-on experience in the industry with a 160-hour (minimum) work placement that will give you the opportunity to apply in a real business what you have learned in the classroom. Students initiate the placement with the aid of faculty, targeting companies in the Greater Toronto Area. Placements can be completed on a part-time basis throughout the academic year or full time once classes finish.

The event industry is a rapidly growing segment of virtually every sector of society. Events are part of public, not-for-profit, charitable, private and corporate sectors. The events industry is used to stimulate economies, increase tourism, develop community awareness, increase public involvement, enhance education, improve quality of life, generate revenue and market products. Professional event managers, working with stakeholders, are required to plan, organize, staff, direct, co-ordinate and evaluate events that meet client needs.
