MSc Marketing Analytics offers a unique opportunity to gain specialist marketing data analysis skills that are highly sought after by employers.

Introducing your degree

MSc Marketing Analytics is a unique course that will prepare you for a career in a growing sector.

Bringing together Southampton Business School’s world-leading expertise in digital marketing and data analytics, MSc Marketing Analytics covers key concepts and techniques that will enable you to manage and analyse big data to inform marketing decisions.

You’ll also learn about cutting-edge areas that only a small number of UK analytics programmes offer, such as text mining and use of data from social networks. Another distinctive feature of the marketing analytics course is the opportunity to learn R and SAS software – both of which are invaluable for a career in analytics.

Overview

While masters degrees in business analytics have become relatively common, Southampton Business School offers the only course in the UK specialising in marketing analytics.

Today’s digital and online marketing techniques generate vast amounts of data, which means there is increasing demand for analysts who can interpret this data, to help businesses to understand their customers and optimise their marketing activities. MSc Marketing Analytics will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills to unlock the potential of big data to inform sound marketing strategies, preparing you for a successful career in this fast-growing sector.

Career Opportunities

There is growing demand for big data analysts who can provide specialist support for marketing decision-makers.

You’ll be prepared for roles such as marketing analyst, market research analyst, digital insight analyst, decision support consultant, data scientist, data analyst, data specialist, customer relationship management (CRM) analyst and credit risk analyst.

Former graduates have gone onto work for BMW in China, Starbucks in Taiwan and Yoyo Wallet, a mobile payment system company based in London.

Programme starts in September 2018

Modern businesses and organizations are increasingly involved in collecting and processing vast amounts of customer and operations data. The resulting (big) data are more and more seen as an important resource for businesses.

In the Data Science and Marketing Analytics programme, students focus on the tools and skills that are needed to analyze such (big) data in modern businesses and turn it into meaningful insights. In particular, Data Science and Marketing Analytics combines theory and practice from computer science, marketing, economics, and statistics, in such a way that the potential of big data can be exploited successfully to create greater value for the consumers and firms.

Careers

Data science has been dubbed the sexiest career of the 21st century, according to Harvard Business Review. Given the growing awareness of the possibilities of exploiting data science for marketing analytics in business, the data science skills acquired during the Data Science and Marketing Analytics programme are expected to provide graduates with excellent job prospects.

According to Trevor Hastie, the John A. Overdeck Professor of Statistics at Stanford University, it is all quite obvious: “Big data is everywhere - it drives web search, web advertising and quantitative finance, to name a few industries. Data Science plays a fundamental role in this new Economy. With its strong history in data modeling, Erasmus School of Economics is well poised to train a new generation of data scientists.

Data Science and Marketing Analytics graduates are therefore expected to have many job opportunities in various sectors of the economy such as (online) retailing, financial services, consulting, and health care. For example, many businesses and organizations are either setting up or expanding business analytics/customer analytics/marketing analytics units. The combination of marketing and economic knowledge with data science skills will be of great value to our graduates and the companies that hire them.

Gain insight into the different activities that make up the marketing mix and other essential communication strategies.

Organisations today face many challenges and opportunities. As technology has evolved and consumer needs and wants have changed, organisations once dominant in their industries have faltered (eg, think Nokia, Yellow Pages, Kodak, or Sony), and organisations which were lesser known have prospered and come to dominate the markets they serve (think Google, Tata or Huawei). More recently, even the mighty Apple has come under increased threat from competitors who have arguably understood customer needs better, and who have been able to provide customers with superior value.

The MSc in Marketing will help you understand these issues and provide you with the skills to apply your knowledge to real world marketing challenges.

This programme is for business and management graduates as well as non-business graduates who wish to enhance their marketing knowledge and expertise. It covers all aspects of marketing, equipping the modern marketing manager with the necessary tools for a successful career. The programme places great emphasis on socially responsible marketing, and the role of marketing within society. You will learn from an internationally recognised team of marketing and business thinkers who are experts in their areas, and you will be encouraged to pursue your own development as an individual with marketing expertise, and real world skills that are in demand.

Graduates may go on to choose a career in consumer or business to business marketing. You will be equipped to work in a variety of marketing functions including marketing analytics, marketing communications, sales and brand management, in public and private sectors, NGOs, consultancies and across a diverse range of sectors and industries.

The MSc in Marketing & Technology aims to transform students into uniquely-trained individuals possessing the knowledge and skills required to be successful marketers in dynamic and technology-driven industries. Read more

The MSc in Marketing & Technology aims to transform students into uniquely-trained individuals possessing the knowledge and skills required to be successful marketers in dynamic and technology-driven industries.

Companies such as Netflix, Airbnb, and Tesla have one thing in common: they break with the norms of existing markets and employ unconventional, technology-driven marketing approaches. Traditional marketing education all too often neglects the marketing abilities that these companies possess.

The MSc in Marketing & Technology departs from the rather passive marketing logic that assumes markets and marketing channels are fixed features of reality. Instead, it shows how managers can proactively shape and create new markets and marketing landscapes.

The goal of this programme is to transform students into uniquely-trained individuals who understand how to leverage emerging technologies, such as 3D printing, Virtual Reality, and the Internet of Things, to design unique customer experiences, disrupt existing markets, and create entirely new ones.

The programme will direct students’ attention to significant and emerging technological trends, and show how they can address important social and environmental problems.

It seeks to enable students to discover new market opportunities that will have a positive impact on the economy, society, and the environment. Students will be equipped with the skills required to effectively navigate today’s technology-dominated marketing environments, and they will learn how to be successful marketers in the digital marketing era.

You will find this programme valuable if you:

  • aim to find a marketing job in an entrepreneurial company, in a creative or technology-dominated industry, and/or in the area of digital marketing.
  • prefer working in dynamic and fast-changing environments
  • have an entrepreneurial mindset and enjoy thinking outside the box.
  • are fascinated by human ingenuity and the latest technological discoveries.
  • seek to make a positive impact on society.

Modules & structure

The MSc Marketing & Technology consists of:

  • six core modules (90 combined credits)
  • two optional modules (30 combined credits)
  • a research dissertation (60 credits)

You will study the following core modules:

Research project

You'll undertake an independent piece of research focusing on the intersection of marketing, technology management, and innovation. The research dissertation should be no longer than 10,000 words. You'll be advised by an experienced supervisor.

Optional modules

You can choose two optional modules to make up the remaining 30 credits

Please note that due to staff research commitments not all of these modules may be available every year.

Skills & careers

Companies across many industries have to cope with increasingly technology-dominated marketing environments. This programme is a response to the marketing needs of such companies. Also, entrepreneurial, technology-based firms will value the skills provided by this programme. Typical jobs include, but are not limited to, the positions of marketing manager, product manager, brand manager, advertising manager, PR manager, media manager, digital communications manager, account manager, marketing strategist, marketing analyst, marketing consultant, or sales manager.
