This MA has the potential to shape a new breed of professionals in the arts management field by offering Liberal Arts, Humanities, Fine Arts, Film, Media and Communication graduates the opportunity to acquire the appropriate management and business skills, thus enabling them to capitalize upon their previous grounding within the arts.

Thanks to AUR’s connections and collaborations with numerous artistic and cultural institutions both in Rome and in Italy, this MA also offers the opportunity to gain invaluable professional experience. Italy has a long and rich tradition of collecting, sponsoring and exhibiting visual arts. The range of potential responsibilities of arts administrators requires a graduate program which will give future art managers in depth knowledge about the structure of the contemporary art world, the nature of artistic and cultural values in general in connection to their market value, a solid knowledge of the business and market principles, in their application to the sphere of artistic and cultural production, as well as high level skills that will make future professionals in the arts management desirable candidates for a variety of posts in particular institutions of the art world, such as museums, galleries, art fairs and media reporting on art and analyzing the current artistic scene. The AUR’s MA in Arts Management enables students to acquire basic skills in the fundamental areas of art management and art administration, giving them an opportunity, through the selection of elective courses and internship experience to specialize in a particular area of their interest.

As competition policy becomes increasingly relevant in both the public and private sectors, there is a great need for professionals prepared to address market regulation issues. The highly practical focus of the Competition and Market Regulation Program (MCMR) assures that students in the program graduate with sound job prospects in their chosen field and an advanced understanding of the interaction between economic theory and practice.

Degree

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Master Degree in Specialized Economic Analysis awarded jointly with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Structure

The program is divided in 3 terms. In the fall term, students will acquire basic economic tools. In the winter term, students will study core issues in competition policy and market regulation with the help of leading specialists in each field. In the spring, students will consider real competition policy cases and how regulation works in several specific sectors. For more information, please download the academic calendar.

Credits

The degree requires the successful completion of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits of graduate courses (6 credits are equivalent to a 40 hour course), some compulsory and some elective. The students' final program must be discussed with and approved by their Master Director.

Grades

The academic performance of each student is reviewed regularly. Attention is given to the maintenance of normal academic progress, through a combination of formal written examinations and coursework. Core courses will award grades. Some optional courses may be evaluated on a pass/fail or pass with honors/pass/fail basis.

The Competition and Market Regulation Program is located at the Ciutadella campus at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in central Barcelona. Cellular therapies have attracted much interest in recent years in virtually all disciplines of medicine with over 2,700 clinical trials enrolled between 2000 and 2010. As of today, http://www.clinicaltrials.gov has over 27,800 registered cellular therapy clinical trials. The complexity of issues relating to cell manufacturing, the underlying regulatory framework, reimbursement and viable business models, each represent challenges that profoundly undermine the timing and the delivery of a viable healthcare model.Our programme will provide tools that aid the understanding of these complex issues within an integrated and commercial context.

A unique MA

A unique feature of the course will be access to two of the greatest surviving art dealers’ archives: Agnew’s, acquired by the National Gallery in 2014, and Colnaghi’s, housed since February 2014 in the Windmill Hill Archive, Waddesdon Manor. It is the first MA in the UK to offer, under the guidance of experts, practical training on how to use, unlock and analyse these rich holdings.

Study trips to Paris and Florence

The course will include study trips to Paris and Florence where students will have the opportunity to study a number of key European collections such as the Edmond de Rothschild collection in the Louvre and the Stefano Bardini collection in Florence as well as visiting important local archives.

Course structure

The course will start in September 2016 and will finish the following September. It comprises two introductory weeks on principles and methodologies followed by three 4-week taught modules delivered in the Autumn and Winter terms. During the third term, and under supervision, students research a dissertation which will be submitted at the end of September 2017.

Subject to the agreement of the Programme Director, there are some options for part-time study, one day a week over two years, or by deferral of the dissertation.

The course is aimed at ambitious designers, designer-makers or textile artists who wish to develop opportunities within the profession and who may wish to set up on their own or with others in small teams.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course is offered in both full and part-time modes. It is normally one year (3 trimesters) in duration in full-time mode or 6 trimesters in part-time mode. The first two trimesters comprise taught sessions and assessed projects, while the Master’s Project in the final part of the course is by negotiated project only. Completion of the first 2 modules on the course lead to the award of the Postgraduate Certificate, and completion of the first 4 modules leads to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma. Subsequent completion of the MA double module leads to the award of MA Design: Fashion and Textiles.

You will be introduced to research skills and methods, product development, design management and methods, with marketing and business skills. The emphasis of the course is learning how best to present ideas, and where and how to place them in the market.

The course is developed through seminars, lectures, tutorials, visiting speakers, group critiques, market research and personal research. You are encouraged to trial a product in the market. This may be through first hand experience, or through working with studios and agents for designers, shops and craft markets (for designer makers), or with galleries or public spaces (for textile artists). Students propose a route of study through the course to explore and research a chosen area of textiles in knit, print, weave, or embroidery for fashion or interiors, or in fashion design.

MODULES

Research Methodologies - Part One introduces generic methodologies with Part Two considering subject specific data retrieval analysis and evaluation techniques.

The Development of Product, Market Research and Product Ideas - Developing ideas technically and aesthetically, in-depth investigation into techniques and researching to market.

Marketing Skills - Marketing and Business skills – developing an understanding of marketing requirements for textile designers and artists.

Product Sampling and Development and Research - Initial product sampling techniques and investigation. Developing and progressing ideas to enable the creation of new products. Range planning.

TEACHING METHODS AND RESOURCES

The first trimester (PGCert) consists of two modules. Research Methodologies consists of a taught programme of lectures, seminars, group critiques, and assignments. You will also negotiate a programme of study for the Product, Market Research and Product Ideas module. The emphasis at this level is on ideas. During the second trimester (PGDip) you will take two further modules: Marketing Skills comprises of lectures, seminars and research; the Development of Product and Product Ideas is negotiated by each student. The final trimester, leading to the MA, involves a negotiated study which you will propose. The study will be research based resulting in a body of work for assessment.

Specialist facilities include computer studios with over 70 Macs, as well as flatbed and transparency scanners. There is a recently re-equipped digital media studio. Fashion and Textiles students benefit from specialist studio spaces for both digital and screen printing, knitting, weaving, embroidery, laser cutting and pattern cutting, using the latest digital technology for CAD/CAM. All students have access to workshops in photography, sound and video, etching and litho, as well as the specialist Art and Design library.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The main aim of the course is for students to identify their own employment opportunities. Other possibilities may include textile design, product or fashion design, retail or sales and marketing opportunities, teaching, trend prediction and promotion, or further research in industry or education, and exhibiting in galleries as a textile artist.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The PGCert is assessed by studio exhibition and/or portfolio presentation with a marketing report. The PGDip involves a written report including market analysis of your chosen product field. Practical work is presented by studio work and/or portfolio. For the MA you will present a cohesive body of creative work, supported by written work.

This interdisciplinary program provides an in-depth study of modern and contemporary art and its markets from the mid-19th century to the present day. Led by an expert faculty, the integrated program combines the development of connoisseurship skills through object-based learning and investigative cataloguing and writing, art history, knowledge of current art business practices and the market, and art market history. Students study art works first-hand in sites of production and exhibition throughout New York City and beyond. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This programme is attuned to the current needs of investment and finance professionals: it combines a rigorous theoretical approach to investment management with the practical tools and opportunities to solve real-life investment problems.

You will learn the analytical, decision-making, problem-solving, risk mitigation and technical financial skills needed to succeed in the field. On graduation, you will have mastered each stage of the investment management process and be able to make informed decisions within that context.

Our compulsory modules deliver a fundamental understanding of investment management concepts, while optional modules allow you to tailor your learning based on your interests or career path. We also incorporate use of our Bloomberg Lab into the programme and you should obtain a Bloomberg Market Competency certificate during their studies.

As the focus of the programme is to prepare you for a career in investment the use of Bloomberg is incorporated into the programme. There is also an opportunity to undertake a preparation course for CFA Level 1 exams once Semester 2 teaching has finished.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The need for an Investment Management programme arises from the continuing global demand for professionals working in the fields of investment management, investment banking, pension funds, insurance companies and alternative investment partnerships (such as hedge funds, private equity and sovereign wealth funds).

The aim of the programme is to provide students with the array of skills required to operate successfully in an investment management or investment analysis role within the finance industry or to pursue further academic study within the subject area.

The programme will provide a high quality education that is current, intellectually rigorous and attuned to the needs of investment and finance professionals. The curriculum for this programme is focused on the traditional components of real estate but from an international perspective. This is developed through modules on international valuation and international finance, which build knowledge that is applicable the world over.

- Real estate economics and finance
This module provides an introduction into a set of theoretical principles and practical skills in economics and finance, which enable property professionals to develop, manage and grow successful businesses and understand the impact of globalisation on property markets.

- International valuations and property management
This module gives a practical insight into international valuation standards as well as aspects of portfolio management and bench-marking. Financial calculations that inform the decision-making processes in property management are also covered.

- International property finance
This module looks at the global capital markets for real estate funding and the development of international investment vehicles such as REITs and Sovereign Wealth Funds.

- Corporate real estate management
This modules takes traditional academic theory and applies it with an international perspective through a case study approach: in this case by applying the theory to the real estate strategy of an international business occupier.

- Property investment appraisal
A module to provide a detailed and critical perspective on property investment and an understanding of the context, in which, investment decisions are made and implemented. This module takes traditional academic theory and applies it with an international perspective through a case study approach: in this case by developing an international investment portfolio as well as undertaking an individual investment appraisal.

- Dissertation
The module provides the opportunity for students to undertake an independent piece of research, investigating in depth a subject, in which, they have a particular interest and of their own selection. Each student will submit a dissertation of between 15,000- 20,000 words. The module includes teaching of research methods.

The module develops a comprehensive understanding of the affective and deliberative decision-making process underlined in any real estate decision and it transition mechanism to market prices.

- Building control
The module focuses upon the control and enforcement of the Building Regulations and associated legislation, along with supporting technical documents and alternative solutions, to meet specific regulative requirements as they apply to various building schemes.

- Building Information Modelling and collaborative working
A module to provide a general understanding of the role that BIM can play throughout the design, construction and operation of building assets. It looks to identify and develop the necessary managerial, technical and interpersonal skills required to deliver better value through a collaborative BIM approach.

- Management of health and safety in construction
This module focuses on the management of safety on site – a process that can be applied to a wide range of work settings and project types.

- History of architecture and construction
This module examines the inter-relationship between building design and production as it occurred throughout historical time. Particular attention will be paid to those periods in history when major transformations occurred in architectural style and the building process.

- International real estate and construction
This module specifically focuses on the activity of international real estate investors and large construction companies. The module also provides students a comparative perspective on real estate markets and construction process.

- Legal resolution of property and construction disputes
This module focuses on the range of dispute resolution techniques used by construction and property professionals to resolve and manage disputes in the construction and property.

- Surveying Project
Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

- Market report and case study analysis
Students on our MSc Surveying courses can choose to study International Real Estate & Construction as an optional. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.
