This MSc course has been designed to provide graduates with the knowledge and understanding to work at an advanced level, managing patient care in perioperative practice.

It offers the opportunity to develop advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to apply them to management in perioperative practice. You will have the opportunity to develop, through the process of research, advanced practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of managing care and the ability to influence change in the field of perioperative practice.

As a full-time student, you will undertake all taught modules during one academic year, while part-time students undertake modules over two years. The modular structure of the programme enables you to select the most appropriate profession-specific modules and shared or generic modules from a suite of modules within the postgraduate provision of the School of Healthcare Studies.

For the Postgraduate Certificate, students complete the Research Methods and Health Improvement in Health and Social Care module (30 credits) and at least one profession-specific module (30 credits).

To be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma, students need to complete the Research Methods and Health Improvement in Health and Social Care module (30 credits) and at least one profession-specific module (30 credits). The remaining 60 credits can be made up of either another profession specific module and/or shared modules available within the MSc suite of optional modules.

Students who proceed to successful completion of a research project and subsequent dissertation will be eligible for the award of a Master of Science degree.

Teaching

Teaching is mainly through workshops, tutorials and seminars. There are also lectures, and these are followed up by appropriate opportunity to discuss and evaluate the ideas presented. Content is supported by online resources.

Self-directed study forms an important part of the course, and you will be directed in study skills and guided in the areas for study.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a variety of assessment procedures, such as written assignments, oral presentations, poster presentations and small projects. This enables you to demonstrate your ability at analysing and evaluating a situation but also to use a variety of ways to present your ideas and abilities. The research project is a culmination of the development of all these skills.

Career prospects

The course is aimed at healthcare professionals working in the field of perioperative practice, including Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) and Registered Nurses (RNs).

The Managing Archaeological Sites MA examines why certain archaeological sites, including World Heritage Sites, are selected for preservation, and how power relationships and different perceptions of contemporary values impact upon this. It explores approaches to how sites can be successfully managed, conserved and presented to preserve their significance.

About this degree

Students will grasp theoretical issues surrounding heritage management, and how to apply a planning process to holistic and sustainable site management, based on the recognition of a site's values to its interest groups. They will also learn practical methods for participatory processes, physical conservation, visitor management, site interpretation, World Heritage nomination, and heritage tourism.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of a core module (30 credits), optional modules (60 credits), an optional work placement and a research dissertation (90 credits).

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 15,000 words (90 credits). 

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical demonstrations and site visits. It includes an optional three-week placement in an appropriate organisation or on-site project. Assessment is through essays, project reports, projects and practicals (depending on the options chosen), and the dissertation.

Placement

Students will have the option to undertake a voluntary placement in an appropriate organisation or on-site project for a period of three weeks in total. In recent years, these placements have included organisations such as English Heritage, the National Trust, Historic Royal Palaces, ICOMOS (Paris), World Monuments Fund (Paris), UNESCO World Heritage Centre (Paris), the Museum of London, Atkins Global, the Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa (Portugal), MIRAS (Iran), City Museum (Palermo), Ancient Merv State Archaeological Park (Turkmenistan), and the National Institute of Informatics (Tokyo, Japan). This is not assessed.

Recent graduates of this programme have gone on to work in policy areas and project areas for national and international organisations, such as English Heritage, the National Trust, ICOMOS and UNESCO. Learning and Teaching

The MA Managing Youth Work Practice is designed for a range of professionals working with young people including youth workers and those who manage them, who wish to undertake related advanced study. It is ideal for those wishing to develop their understanding of the management of this work especially for those who already have or do not require a professional qualification in Community and Youth Work. It is offered through both a full time and part time route however, this summary refers to the full time route with the part time options being individually tailored to accommodate work patterns of those students already employed in profession practice. The programme is delivered through a range of lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work, reflective practice seminars, research seminars and study visits.

Within an ethos of Informal Education our teaching and learning incorporates a range of methods which reflect this and time is allocated to provide a balance between tutor-led and self-directed learning.

Typically, taught sessions provide students with academic input on a particular area of the professional disciplines of youth work and reflect the diverse range of settings within which the management of practice takes place. Drawing from relevant literature and legislation and acknowledging the related range of professional skill, competence and understanding, issues are identified for discussion and draw from historical and contemporary contexts. Seminars provide the opportunity for students to discuss and debate the issues, to share ideas and experience, broaden their understanding and test out their knowledge gained through the taught sessions and independent study. Classroom learning provides students with the latest research and critical theory on the subject area.

The MA Managing Youth Work Practice provides the student with a learning opportunity within which they can apply and test understanding, knowledge and skills related to the managerial roles and responsibilities of their practice settings. A critical examination of the relationship of theory and practice is central to this. The programme is assessed through continual assessment using a range of methods including written assignments, reflective journals, individual and group presentations so there is an expectation that students will undertake independent study to prepare and plan for their classes, through reading relevant literature and legislation, journals and drawing on their current and previous practice experience.

This programme is part of the School of Applied Social Sciences and is significantly involved with the Centre for Social Justice and Community Action at Durham University, as well as being a partner in many collaborative pieces of research and professional practice developments. Key to the course's philosophy is the connection between change and innovation and a focus on futures-oriented processes.

You’ll develop a critical understanding of the research, policies and practice relating to long-term conditions in various organisational contexts. Studying and discussing the difficulties faced by people living with long-term health conditions will enhance your intellectual and practical skills.

This programme provides an opportunity for a range of professionals whose role includes engaging with communities to undertake related advanced study and professional development to develop their career further. It is ideal for those wishing to develop their understanding of the management and policy context of this work at a postgraduate level, especially for those who already have (or do not require) a professional qualification in Community and Youth Work. This might include those practising in community development, housing associations, community health, community enterprise, neighbourhood regeneration, community arts, and professionals in a range of statutory, voluntary and private sector posts that have an element of community involvement and engagement; for example, economic development, planning, policing, transport, and voluntary sector development.

The programme attracts practitioners from a wide range of contexts and countries, enabling learning in an internationally-comparative context. Core modules enable students to explore and develop their understanding of management, policy and practice in this field, as well as learn core research methods skills and carry out their own piece of advanced research. Students have a choice of optional modules to enable more focused study in their own areas of interest.

To study the PG Certificate in Managing in Community Practice you will be required to take Community Policy and Practice and Management in Community and Youth Work plus one 15 credit optional module.

To study the PG Diploma in Managing Community Practice you will be required to take Community Policy and Practice, Management in Community and Youth Work and Professional and Personal Development, plus 45 credits from the optional modules.

Learning and Teaching

The programme is delivered through a range of lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work, reflective practice seminars, research seminars and study visits.

Within an ethos of Informal Education, our teaching and learning incorporates a range of methods which reflect this and time is allocated to provide a balance between tutor-led and self-directed learning. The programme is taught as part of a group of programmes which attract practitioners from a wide range of contexts and countries, enabling learning in an internationally-comparative context, whilst including a particular focus on UK policy and practice.

Typically, taught sessions provide students with academic input on a particular area of the professional discipline of community work and reflect the diverse range of community settings within which the management of practice takes place. Drawing from relevant literature and legislation and acknowledging the related range of professional skill, competence and understanding, issues are identified for discussion and draw from historical and contemporary contexts. Seminars provide the opportunity for students to discuss and debate the issues, to share ideas and experience, broaden their understanding and test out their knowledge gained through the taught sessions and independent study. Classroom learning provides students with the latest research and critical theory on the subject area.

The MA Managing Community Practice provides the student with a learning opportunity within which they can apply and test understanding, knowledge and skills related to the managerial roles and responsibilities of their practice settings. A critical examination of the relationship of theory and practice is central to this. Core modules are structured to enable students to attend university for teaching on an average of one day per week (part time) or two days per week (full time), so that their study can fit around other commitments that they may have.

The programme is assessed through continual assessment using a range of methods including written assignments, reflective journals, individual and group presentations so there is an expectation that students will undertake independent study to prepare and plan for their classes, through reading relevant literature and legislation, journals and drawing on their current and previous practice experience.

The Community and Youth Work Programme is part of the School of Applied Social Sciences and is significantly involved with the Centre for Social Justice and Community Action at Durham University, as well as being a partner in many collaborative pieces of research and professional practice developments. There are therefore many events and initiatives to which the students are encouraged to attend such as extracurricular training, research seminars and workshops to broaden their understanding and deepen their knowledge of wider issues related to their professional discipline.

This programme will build knowledge in the field of business performance management and develop expertise in the frameworks, methods, tools and techniques that are commonly used in practice. COURSE OVERVIEW

Being an Assistant Director or Floor Manager is a demanding role that requires a level head, self-confidence and strong communication skills in order to ensure that the crew and the production meet the challenges of demanding conditions and time constraints.

Assistant Directors and Floor Managers are responsible for the daily operation of the shooting set / television studio. Their objective is to provide the Director with everything he or she needs to realise his or her vision. They are at the heart of ensuring a production stays on track and is delivered successfully.

Assistant Directors and Floor Managers, among many other things, make schedules, attend to the cast, direct extras, oversee the crew as each shot is prepared, create detailed reports of each day's events, and are looked to by cast and crew to solve the many problems that continually arise on set.

The expectation is that on this course you will learn to:

CURRICULUM

This course combines practical experience on Fiction films and TV Entertainment shows with industry work experience placements and intensive training.

The course has been developed to meet industry demand and NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors. Unlike other schools, all production costs are met by the School and productions are given cash production budgets.

The diploma course is 12 months full-time and is delivered at the NFTS:

Specifically students will learn about:
-Reading a script and developing a shooting schedule
-How to use relevant industry software (e.g Movie Magic and Adobe Story)
-The impact of budget, cast availability and script coverage on the shooting schedule
-Supporting the hiring of locations, props and equipment
-Leading a technical recce
-Set and Studio Floor protocols and etiquette
-Liaising with the production office to create call sheets, movement orders, location agreements and other production paperwork
-Managing a set or studio floor with confidence during a shoot
-Managing talent
-Health and Safety and First Aid

PLACEMENT

Each student will complete a minimum of 10-days work experience. This is a requirement to pass the course. Students are encouraged and supported to complete further work experience as appropriate.

SPECIALIST WORKSHOPS

During the course there will be a range of other specialist workshops on a range of relevant topics, such as, Working with Talent, Tracking Vehicles, Stunts, Firearms & Special FX.
