The programme takes an international approach to combining theory and practice in providing broad business administration skills focused on international financial reporting standards as well as on managerial accounting.

Profile

In a technical sense, accounting provides a conceptual framework for preparing financial statements and accounts. The issues which arise in accounting are related to the difficulty of establishing a true and fair value of an enterprise and its assets, the moral basis of disclosure and discretion and the standards and laws required to satisfy the political needs of investors, employees, suppliers and other stakeholders in taking decisions broadly related to the economy. In this sense, accounting is a concept - and yet it is more than this. It is also a decisive part of a mechanism and a crucially important instrument in establishing and maintaining a market-based transaction system.

The Master in Financial and Managerial Accounting takes an international approach to combining theory and practice in providing broad business administration skills focused on international financial reporting standards as well as on managerial accounting.

It concentrates on the role of information in a market economy, and especially its importance in developing sound financial systems. To achieve the goal of skills and expertise on the level of the individual stakeholder, the FAMA Masters Programme curriculum and content not only provide core knowledge on external and internal information systems, but also addresses some key integrative multi-disciplinary aspects. In addition, the programme includes a broad selection of electives on various aspects of management, ethics, law and politics to meet the specific knowledge needs beyond pure accounting.”

In line with the developing cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the programme is jointly offered by the IMB Institute of Management Berlin and two Vietnamese universities.

The Master in Financial and Managerial Accounting is primarily designed for graduates from Vietnam who have completed a career-oriented first degree (BA or BSc) and would like to study for a post-graduate degree awarded by a renowned German university.

It prepares students for positions as accounting and controlling specialists or executive managers in consulting or auditing firms or in international companies.

Content

The Master programme is basically divided into two parts:

1st study term (11 months): Foundation Course

2nd study term (13 months): Specialisation and Master’s Thesis

The Foundation Course enables students to extend their knowledge acquired during their undergraduate studies to develop further expertise in Financial and Managerial Accounting and related subjects. In addition, a range of additional courses are provided by the electives and tutorials.

The specialisation builds on the Foundation Course to provide the specialised skills to meet the challenges in the chosen career sector. A case study / research project enables students to apply their new theoretical knowledge in practice. In addition to the completion of the specialisation modules, this study term is scheduled for completing the degree by submitting the Master’s Thesis and defending it in an oral exam. This Master programme is taught entirely in English.

Guest speaker sessions

John Lees, an internationally recognised career coach and careers writer, shared a number of insights into the changing job market and the skills individuals need to manage their career. Students were provided with a number of practical tools to help them identify their skills, focus on their career drivers, as well as think about their ideal job and the strategies needed to secure employment in a world where many jobs are never advertised.

Vicky Reeves, entrepreneur and Managing Director of the London-based web solutions company ChameleonNet, gave an inspiring and candid talk on the highs and lows of developing a successful business. She talked about how she has grown the company from a micro business to one that now employs around 30 people. She spoke about the skills that she has developed along the journey, how to go about getting the right advice and support, as well as providing some humorous stories to demonstrate the creative skills needed when running your own business.

Group projects

Students have worked on a number of group projects. One of these involved producing a design proposal for a dedicated postgraduate common room within the School. The objectives being to build a more cohesive postgraduate community; create a ‘third place’ to exchange ideas, share knowledge and maximise the resources of the University and thus improve the Roehampton learning experience among the postgraduate community. Students were given a budget to work within and had to present their proposals to a number of key decision makers across the University.

Beyond your MBA

The Roehampton MBA is fully recognised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Successful completion of the programme leads to eligibility for membership of the CMI and the potential to gain chartered manager status.

The Global Business Management program aims to endow students with the listed skills so as to enable them to quickly adapt to an international environment, whilst understanding the dynamics, and knowing how to effectively identify solutions to managerial problems in such settings.

Learning objectives

The curriculum presents two types of courses: subjects relating to the managerial disciplines (strategy, HRM, accounting), and subjects relating to business issues and problems typically associated with the processes of internationalization of firms and the understanding of economic issues (managerial economics, financial reporting and performance measurement, business and government relations). This is done to balance traditional knowledge of management with the specialization and the development of specific internationalization-oriented skills. This MSc will prepare students for highly skilled, multidisciplinary managerial roles in the natural resources sector across the globe. The programme is transcontinental (offered by UCL and the University of South Australia (UniSA)), is delivered by UCL Chemical Engineering, UCL Earth Sciences, UCL School of Management, and the Future Industries Institute at UniSA, and designed with significant input from industry.

About this degree

Students develop knowledge of geology, geosciences, geochemistry and the chemical processes used to transform raw materials into commmodities; managerial skills; and an understanding of the relationship between limited natural resources, economic forces, and the implications for society. The first two terms are spent at UCL in London and the third term and summer at UniSA in Adelaide.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).

Some of the modules taught in London will be co-taught by experts at UniSA via remote teaching methods. A business engineer is trained for analyzing and solving business problems from a quantitative and managerial point of view. The programme belongs to the domain of business economics and is management oriented: students learn how companies function, how business processes should be designed and how business activities can be optimally organized. The managerial focus is combined with strong analytical skills and a profound understanding of how business and (technological) innovation processes work. This integration of disciplines is of high relevance to production environments as well as to service companies (e.g. consultancy or ICT).

Structure

The Master of Science in Business Engineering is organised at two campuses: Brussels and Leuven. The programmes share a common structure and have the same compulsory courses. Each campus offers different courses in the majors, minors, and electives. Students on one campus have the option to follow some of the courses at the other campus.

There is a wide range of opportunity in the Civil Engineering profession for geotechnical specialists, particularly those who combine geotechnical knowledge with essential managerial skills aspects associated with the Construction Industry.

Modern structures, such as buildings, embankments and dams, must satisfy exacting stability and deformation criteria, and they may have to be sited on weak or compressible ground. It is the responsibility of the geotechnical engineer to plan and direct the necessary ground investigations and laboratory testing, interpret the results, and propose methods of design and construction to overcome difficulties caused by inadequate ground.

The long-term performance of the structure must be predicted, and instruments may have to be installed to check the prediction. This needs a sound knowledge of engineering geology, soil and rock mechanics, current civil engineering design, and of construction management and practice.

This MSc programme is designed to support high level training and enhance both the technical and managerial skills of recent graduates or experienced personnel who work in, or aspire to a career in, the construction or related industries. This programme is aimed at Civil Engineers and Geologists who wish to widen their professional scope or to specialise in geotechnical engineering with the addition of modern managerial skills. To summarise the detailed information above, the teaching concentrates on four essential aspects of the subject:

Physical, chemical and mechanical properties of soils and rocks; ground investigation; field and laboratory testing
Engineering geology and site investigation
Analysis, design and construction of foundations, retaining walls, embankments and slopes including methods of ground reinforcement and improvement.
Managerial skills for the construction industry, including groundworks and risk management, BIM in infrastructure and infrastructure planning process.

The course is designed to promote the development of the general management skills and abilities required in a rapidly changing economic environment, both by individuals, already operating in, or those seeking to take up supervisory and managerial roles.

The course will develop the skills of analysis, problem solving and proactive thinking. It will provide the underpinning knowledge and understanding required to operate effectively in a managerial role that's why it's designed for those managers who want to develop and accredit their professional competence and knowledge base.

Our general management courses include associate membership of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) with the opportunity to apply for full membership when the course is completed. They are accredited by the CMI and student membership subscription to the CMI is included in the course fee.

A residential weekend takes place in Semester 2.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by assignments, two per module. It is a requirement of the course to attend and contribute to the residential weekend.

As part of the ever evolving curriculum, all lecturers on the course strive to ensure that assignments are relevant and innovative, firmly linking them to the needs of you and your potential employers. As part of your studies, you'll take part in a weekend residential where you'll engage in various activities that have practical and theoretical use. As part of your learning you'll undertake an improvement project directly linked to your work. This project is guided by a lead management expert. These activities link across the entire curriculum.

Modules are assessed using two types of assessment: Formative and Summative;

Formative assessment is any process whereby we concern ourselves with the process of learning and academic progress in order to assist development and knowledge acquisition, but without conferring a formal mark.Throughout the course there are various formative mechanisms, including group-work activity, learning diaries, action learning sets and the day to day advice and support from tutors and colleagues.

Summative assessment refers to the formalised marking of work, through examinations and the assessment of assignments. Although it is ultimately the summative assessments which confer a result, we intend that the formative processes should enhance the prospects of that result, and its meaning. Present students tell us that this shared engagement with learning has added considerably to their knowledge and confidence.

Teaching and learning

You'll be supported throughout your studies and have access to lecturers for 1-2-1 meetings and guidance. There is an active use of LSBU's Virtual Learning Environment, where all lectures and seminar activities are made available, along with other support materials, such as articles and reference materials. You'll be able to discuss any concerns they have during lecture and seminar sessions and will be encouraged to seek assistance and further clarification on topics and/or assignments.
