MBA Business Event

Students will have the opportunity to participate in the MBA business event (Brussels in 2014/15) in their first year. The MBA business event is optional and the cost should not exceed £250 for flights and accommodation (If travelling from the UK). Students normally allow an additional £250 for their expenses.

Methods of Learning

The programme can be undertaken anywhere in the world, as we use facilitative technologies to enable your engagement with the course team, fellow students and course materials. Normally, you will complete three blocks of 14 weeks study. You will be expected to interact with the course team in online activities and in significant additional study, learning and networking and to engage online in development activities associated with your achievement of the professional body memberships and awards. After the completion of the taught modules you will have a further nine months to complete your Business Research Project. The distance learning programme normally runs twice a year with September and February starts.

Per module you should expect to spend between 10/20 hours per week engaging with online activities and study through NILE as well as self-directed study time.

Assessments

The programme has a combination of assessment involving practical work, essays, reports, case studies and examinations. The Business Research Project Procurement is a 15,000 word independent research project.

COURSE CONTENT

The first year of the Master is a fulltime year in Grenoble or London.
The program covers four key areas of study for Marketers, each of the 19 modules follow a logical connection to the one before.

Integrative Marketing Case Study

Using an existing business, the “Live Business Case” will provide the students with the opportunity to pull together all the aspects of the program. Students will analyze a marketing problem in the Company and use their skills and knowledge to solve issues and propose solutions. This takes place in small groups and in a limited time. Assessment for the case study will be based on a group assignment with a group presentation to the Company.

At the end of the one-year full time part of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length, under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study. This will be business oriented and coherent with your program's objectives. A student may choose to write his/her project on a topic grounded in his/her internship experience.

Overview

he Master’s in Management and Marketing is a taught, one-year, full-time programme. The course is divided into three 15 week semesters. In the first two semesters, contact time averages about 15 hours a week for the first ten to twelve weeks, leaving the last three to five weeks for examinations. The third semester is given over to the Managerial Reports Module, which involves 12 hours of workshops and then ongoing contact time with your tutor as you prepare a substantial piece of work (up to 14,000 words) on a real-world business and management topic.

Teaching in the Aberystwyth Business School is underpinned by research. Our academic staff publish their work in leading academic journals and regularly act as consultants to a range of organizations. We have significant strengths in areas such as entrepreneurship, human resource management, international business and operations and supply chain management. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment the university was placed in the top 50 institutions for research power and intensity. It submitted 77% of eligible staff and 95% of the university's research was of an internationally recognised standard.

The Management Strand

The MSc in Information Science is an ideal career development programme for librarians, archivists and other information professionals who wish to update their management skills and experience in the use of information technology, the internet and digital media, or for those from a computer-oriented background who wish to specialise in information fields.

Degree information

The programme includes both practical and theoretical work through which students develop a deeper understanding of not just the technologies themselves but also the implications of applying and managing these technologies in varied information environments. The wide range of optional modules allows students to tailor the programme to fit their individual career specialisms and needs.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma, five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits), full-time nine months or flexible study over 2-5 years, is offered. A Postgraduate Certificate, any four of the modules available (60 credits), full-time 15 weeks or flexible study over a period of up to two years is offered but does not carry CILIP accreditation.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project on a specific aspect of information technology and its application, which culminates in a dissertation of c. 12,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, computer laboratory practicals and classroom practicals, with a strong emphasis on informal teaching, discussion, and the acquisition of practical skills. Assessment is through a mixture of essays, reports, examination, and practical projects such as website design and data modelling.

The MSc in Information Science prepares students for management roles in the information industries with an emphasis on technology, for example: information systems manager, systems librarian, web manager, information architect, knowledge manager, data manager, or indeed any information management role. Our graduates find work all over the world with electronic systems for managing, retrieving, distributing and archiving vast quantities of information. The programme is recognised and accredited by CILIP, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, for professional qualifications purposes.

Theory and action-based learning

This programme is closely associated with the research carried out within the Institute of Management Research, where the focus is on research into relationship management, institutional dynamics, decision making and innovative management. You will become familiar with both the theoretical and practical aspects of your special subject. The programme combines a thorough training in methodology with action-based learning: you apply the theory you have learned to concrete cases and learn to develop appropriate solutions. And in our Visa Skills Lab, students use computers to make scenario analyses and simulate decision-making processes within organisations.

Truly international

We provide internationally oriented education and research training. Our students have the opportunity to take part in a Master’s level project on European Human Resource Management, a cooperative venture among six leading European business schools and universities. Here, students work in a multi-cultural team and follow a consultancy in-company project in one of the six countries involved.
