The program places an emphasis on real-world experience from the first semester. Many of the subjects in the program include industry-based assessment activities that are delivered in conjunction with industry. Intensive mode delivery

Subjects are generally delivered over two weekends during the semester with two sets of three-day sessions per subject, usually scheduled Thursday to Saturday (approximately six to eight contact hours per day) with a break of four or five weeks between session one and session two of each subject

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

Business, ethics and society investigates and activates the role of business as ethical and social leaders. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of internal and external ethical and societal forces that businesses face, respond to and activate. Business, ethics and society especially develops students' critical engagement and leadership capabilities to manage diversity, inclusiveness, and work and life. These capacities are developed within a strong context of ethics and corporate responsibility, and the domestic and international environments in that organisations operate. The specialisation prepares students for active managerial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Commercialisation

Commercialisation is the process or cycle of introducing a new product or production method into the market. The commercialisation process or cycle can be applied in many different contexts, including: art, design, and architecture; arts and humanities; business and economics; education; engineering; information technology; law; medicine, nursing and health sciences; pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences; and science and technology. The specialisation provides a comprehensive business-focused setting to help students develop the necessary business and entrepreneurial acumen and commercialisation knowledge to succeed. Commercialisation especially develops students' new venture finance, patenting, innovation, and wealth pathways skills and knowledge. Law and responsible business

The fortunes of a business can quickly turn around if it does not pay proper attention to the laws that regulate its organisation and activities. The law provides the framework for all aspects of business from the internal management of business organisations to their relationships with clients, consumers and the public. The units in this specialisation provide students with an understanding of the legal framework within which business operates and the fundamental laws that regulate business activities and transactions, with particular emphasis on how legal and social responsibility considerations should impact business decision-making.

Managing human capital

Managing human capital is the recognition of people as valuable contributors, and the systems and operations for investing in people to enhance their contributions. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of managing and developing people within an international context. Managing human capital develops students' strategic and operational people management knowledge and skills, particularly for diverse, inclusive, and productive workplaces. There are six core management modules including a management report that are compulsory for all six pathways. The compulsory core management modules are:

How you will be assessed

All modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and final assessment held at the end of each Semester with re-sit opportunity shortly thereafter. Coursework may account for as much as 40-50% of the overall degree. Coursework is an integral part of the assessment process. By forming part of the total mark it encourages students to excel throughout the degree.

Students will begin their studies, for both full-time and part time students, with a core module in Sustainability and Environmental Systems. To obtain a Masters degree you need to carry out a supervised research project comprising of research methods and a 10,000-15,000 word research project. The project can be based on an environmental management issue that interests you or is relevant to your organisation. If you do not want to carry out a research project you may graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma.

This course is available both full and part-time with intakes in September (Semester A) and January (Semester B). Full time study in Semester A takes 1 year. Full time study beginning in Semester B will take 15 months. Part time study options typically take two years but students are given a maximum of five years to complete.

Structure

The MSc Public Policy and Management has three components:

1. Four core courses to the value of 2.0 units
2. Elective course(s) to the value of 1.0 unit
3. Dissertation of 10,000 words on an approved topic (1 unit)

The 10,000-word dissertation is worth 25% of your final mark. During term 2 you will submit your dissertation proposal and select an academic supervisor. Over the ensuing months you should meet with your supervisor at least three times before the end of term 3 for guidance. The bulk of your dissertation will be written over the summer to meet the mid-September deadline.

Not all elective courses are offered every year; please check your preferences with the Programme Convenor. Also note that if half units are selected, one term 1 course and one term 2 course needs to be chosen.

- Part-time Study

Part-time students are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, then one core and two elective courses plus the dissertation during the second year.

Those enrolled on the three-year programme are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, one core and two elective courses in the second year, and the dissertation in the third year.

Employment

Building on the distance learning version of the programme, the Department of Financial and Management Studies (DeFiMS) maintains close links with employers in both the United Kingdom and abroad. We expect that many of our graduates will be employed as civil servants in central government administrations, governmental agencies, local governments, NGOs, super-national organisations, and consulting firms.

The increasing burden of chronic illness is one of the greatest challenges facing health systems globally. In the UK, approximately 18 million people live with a long term or chronic condition and this number is expected to double by 2030. Approximately 80% of GP consultations, 60% of days spent in hospital and two thirds of all emergency hospital admissions are associated with chronic conditions (Department of Health 2004).

Managing long term and chronic conditions currently accounts for almost 70% of the NHS budget and these costs are projected to increase significantly given the ageing population and escalating risk factors such as obesity and inactivity.

Long term and chronic conditions can have profound and far reaching implications on all aspects of peoples’ lives and can present patients (and families) with a spectrum of needs.

People living with a long term or chronic condition require support, care and rehabilitation from a wide range of professionals in health, social and voluntary care sectors. In addition, effective health promotion, prevention, self-care and self-management will help ensure that chronic illnesses are avoided wherever possible and that people are more informed to safely and effectively manage their health and wellbeing.

This requires complex responses over extended periods of time, coordinated, proactive and collaborative input from the health, social care and voluntary sectors, patients, carers and lay personnel (as in the Expert Patient Programme). These need to be optimally embedded with systems which actively promote and support sustainable stakeholder collaboration and patient empowerment.

The MSc Long Term and Chronic Conditions is designed to be both multi-disciplinary and inter-professional and thereby mirror long term and chronic condition management within the National Health Service (NHS) and government initiatives.

This course is structured as either a one year full-time or three year part-time modular taught Master's degree. The core structure is based around a holistic approach to long term and chronic conditions management, coupled with research.

The Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management programme offer students the flexibility to choose a “bespoke” path that enables them to develop personally and professionally relevant qualifications with a range of optional modules on offer.

Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students can ‘drill down’ within their specialist area, for example, health promotion, leadership or cancer rehabilitation.

Career Prospects

Current and previous Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students have roles as nurses, physiotherapists, podiatrists, Occupational Therapists, chiropractors, physicians and health science graduates.

They have worked with organisations including Adidas, Sky Sports, Red Bull, Sport England, the Football League, and the Lawn Tennis Association. Staff also sit on the boards of organisations including the World Association of Sport Management, the European Association of Sport Management, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA), and the Leisure Studies Association.

Whether you are interested in traditional sports, emerging sports, e-sports, or marketing through sport, the MSc International Sport Management has been designed to support your academic and vocational development. Staff with significant sport business experience and contacts with industry partners teach the Masters course in a sport department, rather than a business school. What this means is that all of your modules are related to sport and are taught by people who understand the relationship between theory, practice, and industry requirements.

Teaching And Assessment

Modules covered on the course include: The Sport Marketing Process; International Resource Management in Sport; Strategic Management for Sport; International Sport Event Management; and The Research Process.

Our assessments are based on the types of tasks that sports managers are required to perform, such as writing reports, making presentations, evaluating information, financial analysis and developing strategic plans. You will undertake an applied research project to complete your Masters.

All students have the support of a guidance tutor and will meet with them regularly throughout the course to help with personal and professional issues that arise.

The course’s specialised sports focus connects you directly to networks of international, national and regional sport, providing a unique insight into the global sports industry.

In recent years, we have offered a field trip to Lausanne, Switzerland, home of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), numerous international sport federations, and many other leading agencies in international sport. During this trip, which we believe is unique in the sector, students meet with representatives from these top-level international agencies to learn about current issues in international sport management.

Your research skills will be developed via a reflective research portfolio in semester 1. In semester 2 you will choose the focus of your dissertation study and will be encouraged to create new knowledge that can help to inform the academic and/or professional communities of international sport management.

Immersion in academic literature is a central tenet of the course, balanced with an applied professional focus. The exploration of sport management issues and debates with an international theme enhance the course’s depth and breadth of insight and critical evaluation.

Staff are actively researching a range of topics in the field including branding and consumer culture, volunteer management, organisational evolution in sport, and fan behaviour and emerging digital technologies at live sporting events.

Graduates of the MSc International Sports Management will have distinctive skill sets with the ability to critically discuss the concepts and key functions of international sport management as well as being able to analyse and avaluate strategy, organisational structures and design, plus organisational behaviour and operations in international, European and UK-based sports organisations.

You will be able to critically discuss the management of resources, the marketing of sport products, the strategic direction of sport organisations and the ethical, environmental and legal issues underpinning international sport management.
