The objective of the international Seminar on European Project Management is to provide participants with the skills to plan European projects in the field of education, training and research.

The European Project Management international Seminar focuses on the following topics:

The European Project Management international Seminar is addressed to individuals who wish to acquire the skills for successfully accessing and managing European funds in the field of education, culture and research. The European Project Management international Seminar aims at providing participants with the skills to enable them to:
• Manage contractual procedures with the European Commission and national agencies.
• Organize and plan the project work for a successful implementation of the project activities and for achieving the expected project’s results.
• Organize and manage the project partnership, monitor its work, prevent and address conflicts.
• Monitor the project development, assess and evaluate the quality of its outcomes, deal with possible risks.
• Create and deliver project reports both for internal and external purposes.

THE PROGRAMME

The programme of the international Seminar on European Project Management is organized in 5 modules:
• Module 1: Introduction to Project Management
Introduction to the planning of a European project and how the planning phase influences the management of a funded project
• Module 2: Project Management Strategies and Contractual Issues
Presentation on how to plan the project activities and analysis of the typologies of contracts to be set up for project management.
• Module 3: Partnership Management
Introduction to the strategies to organize the project partners work and to successfully manage the partnership
• Module 4: Evaluation and Dissemination
Introduction to the planning and carrying out of an effective evaluation, dissemination and sustainability strategy
• Module 5: Project Reporting and Administrative Issues
Presentation of the reporting activities and methodologies and of the administrative and financial rules for the project financial and administrative management

THE COORDINATOR OF THE SEMINAR

The International Seminar on European Project Management is organized and coordinated by Pixel, an education and training institution based in Florence (Italy) having as its main aim the provision of support to internationalization and European Cooperation. Pixel successfully coordinated and managed over 85 European projects. Some of the European programmes that funded the projects in which Pixel was and is involved are: Socrates ODL; Socrates Minerva, Socrates Grundtvig, Socrates Lingua, eLearning, Leonardo da Vinci, Lifelong Learning, Justice Programme, Safer Internet Programme. Many among the European projects coordinated by Pixel were given an “Excellent” rating and identified as “Best Practice” by the European Commission.

Pixel also coordinated and managed over 30 projects funded by the European Social Fund.

ORGANIZATION

The European Project Management international Seminar has a duration of 60 hours.
30 hours of classroom based learning held in Florence (Italy). The 30 hours course is organized in 6 days, Monday to Saturday, 5 hours each day.
30 hours of e-learning integrated with virtual meetings with the course tutor and the other course participants. A Forum is also available for virtual meetings among all participants.

The classroom course takes place at Pixel, in Florence, Italy.

METHODOLOGY

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have over 15 years of experience in planning and managing projects and initiatives funded by the European Commission, mainly in the sector of Education and Training.

A practical simulation is carried out for each topic in focus. The practical simulation is based on the use of the services, databases and documentation made available, on-line, by the European Union.
The objective of the practical activity is the simulation of the development and presentation of a European project.
At the end of the international Seminar, every work group will have produced a first draft of a European project including the application form, budget, transnational partnership etc.

FOLLOW UP

During the classroom course each participant is introduced to the e-learning course’s contents.

During the four weeks after the classroom course, 2 virtual meetings are organized between the course trainers and tutor and the course participants to further analyse and discuss the contents learnt at distance. An on line Forum is also available for all course participants to ask questions to the course trainers and share the answers with their colleagues.

Blended Internet delivery

Blended Internet delivery combines the rich faculty/student interaction that is the hallmark of an MSOE education with the flexibility of online learning. The amount of time students spend in class is reduced, while time spent on project-focused learning is enhanced.

MSOE’s blended classes meet fact-to-face during alternating weeks. Meetings occur during the evening on “even” numbered or “odd” numbered weeks each academic term. Online learning activities are scheduled during non-meeting weeks and are facilitated via MSOE’s Blackboard instructional platform. Digital lectures, interactive discussions, investigative case studies, computerized simulations and synchronous chats are examples of online learning experiences used by MSOE faculty.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The taught postgraduate degree programmes of the Department are intended both to assist with professional career development within the relevant industry and, for a small number of students, to serve as a precursor to academic research.

Our philosophy is to integrate the acquisition of core engineering and scientific knowledge with the development of key practical skills (where relevant). To fulfil these objectives, the programme aims to:
-Attract well-qualified entrants, with a background in electronic engineering, physical sciences, mathematics, computing and communications, from the UK, Europe and overseas
-Provide participants with advanced knowledge, practical skills and understanding applicable to the MSc degree

The course emphasises the importance of adopting a multidisciplinary approach both to understanding the nature of growth and regeneration problems as well as creating successful policy solutions.

MPhil courses offered by the Department of Land Economy share common aims. These are:

i) to enable students of a high calibre to pursue their education at an advanced applied level drawing on the primary disciplines of economics, planning and environmental policy, with additional specialisms in finance and law;

ii) to provide students with opportunities both to build on and develop material which they may have studied at undergraduate level as well as to broaden their knowledge base;

To effectively use this technology requires a large number of people to apply and manage the technology. The price of the technology has reduced significantly since the inception of data warehousing with Microsoft and Oracle supplying the appropriate add-on tools to their database management system products. These factors allow smaller organisations to gain a competitive advantage by utilising the large pool of transactional data that in some cases has been stored for many years.

In an industrial context, students may be required to manage teams of developers in small to large scale projects. To efficiently manage such projects, they will require a significant technical understanding of the issues arising to be able to appreciate the complexity of the tasks to be undertaken.

Indeed, in an SME this role is often fulfilled by a senior member of the development staff with both development and management duties. Career potential

This course will emphasise the need for integration in projects and leadership in performance improvement, with a focus on the understanding of project and process management. It recognises the significance of process, technology and people to the success of projects in the design, property and construction industries. You will leave with the knowledge to plan construction projects and manage project information, lead and work effectively with project teams as well as the skills to analyse corporate problems, alternative strategies, and to implement these changes.

The construction industry has witnessed a marked change over the last few years, increasingly moving away from the traditional approach to project management in construction to a more integrated approach, fusing together the design and construction elements where once they would be viewed as separate management disciplines. Therefore a graduate entering the construction management arena must be well equipped to cope with the demands of the construction industry and its expectations of project management. The School of the Built Environment has 100% graduate employment rate for Project Management in Construction, with graduates employed in a number of related fields including the built environment, civil engineering, heavy engineering, offshore and petrochemical industries.

The MSc Social Research Methods programme is backed by decades of experience: we were the first in the UK to run this type of programme in 1974.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Social researchers employ a constantly evolving range of qualitative and quantitative methods to explore attitudes and experiences, and to understand patterns of social behaviour.

This programme won't just train you in the application of specific research techniques: it will illuminate the connections between sociological theory and empirical research, and relate research to the development of public policy and the analysis of substantive social issues.

Wider issues of the social research process are also covered and include: the planning and management of research projects; the methodological, theoretical, philosophical and ethical aspects of research; and the presentation and publication of research findings.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time students must study at least two taught technical modules per academic year. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation. The following modules are indicative, reflecting the information available at the time of publication. EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The main aims of the programme are to:
-Provide an appropriate training for students preparing MPhil/PhD theses, or for students on to employment involving the use of social science research
-Introduce students to a variety of different approaches to social science research at an advanced level
-Cover the principles of research design and strategy, including formulating research questions or hypotheses and translating these into practicable research designs
-Make students aware of the range of secondary data available and equip them to evaluate its utility for their research
-Develop skills in searching for and retrieving information, using library and Internet resources
-Introduce students to the philosophical, theoretical and ethical issues surrounding research and to debates about the relationship between theory and research, about problems of evidence and inference, and about the limits of objectivity
-Develop skills in the use of SPSS, and in the main statistical techniques of data analysis, including multivariate analysis
-Develop skills in the use of CAQDAS software for the analysis of qualitative data
-Develop skills in writing, in the preparation of a research proposal, in the presentation of research results and in verbal communication
-Help students to prepare their research results for wider dissemination, in the form of seminar papers, conference presentations, reports and publications, in a form suitable for a range of audiences, including academics, policy makers, professionals, service users and the general public

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas:
-Formulate, design, plan, carry out and report on a complete research project
-Use the range of research techniques commonly employed in sociological research, from survey research to field methods
-Collect or generate quantitative and qualitative data through an array of techniques, and select techniques of data generation on appropriate methodological bases
-Analyse: quantitative data using basic and more advanced skills; qualitative data from both ‘real world’ and ‘virtual world’ environments
-Employ a quantitative and qualitative software package to manage and analyse data
-Apply critical reflection skills to the methodological, theoretical, ethical, and philosophical aspects of social research practice
-Plan, manage and execute research as part of a team and as a sole researcher
-Present research findings to differing audiences
-Have an understanding of the contribution social research makes to social policy formulation and the evaluation of planned social interventions

Knowledge and understanding
-Appreciate the epistemological and ontological questions that underpin social research
-Show critical awareness and understanding of the methodological implications of a range of sociological theories and approaches
-Show systematic knowledge of basic principles of research design and strategy
-Understand the use and value of a wide range of different research approaches across the quantitative and qualitative spectra
-Show advanced knowledge of techniques, and appropriate use, of quantitative and qualitative data analysis

Within the construction industry, there is always a strong demand for commercial management and quantity surveying functions.
