Assessment is both formative and summative. It is designed to appeal to – and test – students from wide range of traditions. Methods are varied and include assignments written in report and essay format, comparative analyses, case studies, a skills development portfolio, presentations and group work. There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given is giving to help prepare you for these assessments.

There will also be a dissertation which carries 60 credits. The dissertation requires you to conduct a piece of empirical research on a topic of your choice (and approved by your tutor). Most students choose to conduct their research on a key ‘people management’ issue within their own organisation.

Professional accreditation

Students gain Associate Membership of the CIPD and you can apply for professional upgrading with the Institute linked to your professional experience to achieve Chartered Membership or Fellowship following successful completion of your programme of study. This exciting programme is specifically designed to help you to develop your knowledge and understanding of business and management and be able to implement this effectively across a wide range of complex business-based scenarios as well as in an international context.

You will engage in the advanced study of a diverse range of organisations and the rapidly changing environments in which they operate both nationally and internationally. COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The programme is offered in a modular format offering you the greatest choice in tailoring your final degree content to match your academic interest and future career development. You will take a mix of taught modules in the first two trimesters (120 credits) and complete a dissertation/research project (15,000–20,000 words) in the third trimester (60 credits). To achieve the MA you will need to complete 180 credits in total.

In addition to the general MA in Business and Management, there are also specialist pathways available in Marketing, Enterprise, Accounting and International Business. The specialist pathways in Marketing and Enterprise are accredited by The Chartered Institute of Marketing as meeting the qualification criterion for entry into the Professional Diploma in Marketing.

Trimester 1
By the end of the first trimester you will have developed a core of knowledge about the contemporary business environment and the management skills, through the core 30 credit module. In addition, you will have begun to gain an insight into the key themes that will comprise your final degree, taking one further compulsory 15 credit module dependent upon your specialist pathway choice, together with one optional 15 credit module.

Trimester 3
In Trimester 3 you will work on your consultancy project or dissertation (60 credits). This is supported by a nominated supervisor. The teaching commences with a series of taught interventions designed to promote scholarly endeavour in the research context - resulting in the formulation of a clearly articulated research proposal outlining your research questions and the framing of the detailed work to be undertaken.

The consultancy project or dissertation gives you the opportunity to explain to yourself what you have learned about business and management and to demonstrate how you will apply this knowledge. Writing the consultancy project or dissertation provides you with a unique opportunity to consolidate the evidence you have assembled during the course and to subject it to rigorous academic analysis and practical application. As a guide the consultancy project or dissertation will be between 15,000 and 20,000 words.

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

Field trips

By listening to our students and recognising the need for practice-oriented business and management education, we have introduced new ways to engage with companies from the public and the non-profit sector. We also host a number of guest speakers throughout the year who bring their business and management experience and expertise to the classroom.

We also offer the International Business in Practice - Study Trip. The purpose of this Study Trip Module is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Trimester 3
In Trimester 3 you will work on your consultancy project or dissertation (60 credits). This is supported by a nominated supervisor. The teaching commences with a series of taught interventions designed to promote scholarly endeavour in the research context - resulting in the formulation of a clearly articulated research proposal outlining your research questions and the framing of the detailed work to be undertaken.

The consultancy project or dissertation gives you the opportunity to explain to yourself what you have learned about business and management and to demonstrate how you will apply this knowledge. Writing the consultancy project or dissertation provides you with a unique opportunity to consolidate the evidence you have assembled during the course and to subject it to rigorous academic analysis and practical application. As a guide the consultancy project or dissertation will be between 15,000 and 20,000 words.

- Evaluate and challenge both the positive and negative effects of a range of business and management practices and be able to make judgements about their value and implications;
- Apply your learning in a variety of business contexts ranging from the experience of large multinational organisations to sole party ownership; through different industry and sector specific experience; and through analysis of enterprise at different stages of development - self- employment, start- up and small business.

This programme is designed to prepare participants for a wide range of careers in general management across all industry sectors and in the international environment. It will prepare you for entry level into management and ready you for progression to middle management positions. The advanced learning that it provides delivers practical management based skills and techniques that are directly applicable to a wide range of occupations. The MA International Tourism Management programme is aimed at students who work, or aspire to work, in a management position within the tourism industry in small or large organisations, and at global or local levels.

Course Overview

The MA International Tourism Management programme is available as a full or part time campus based programme as well as a part-time online programme. In part one of the programme students will study a number of modules which will enable them to gain a systematic understanding of the nature and development of tourism and destinations, marketing and management.

Tourism specific modules will initiate discussion about the development of places as sustainable destinations, destination management, place image, socio-cultural, environmental, economic and political impacts of tourism and the potential of sustainable approaches to tourism development.

Additionally, students will also develop an understanding of management principles and marketing applied to the tourism context and will engage in critical thinking about contemporary global issues which form the backdrop to the discipline. In part two of the programme, students can elect to undertake a dissertation, integrated case study or business development proposal. Exit awards also include Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma.

Assessment

In addition to more traditional essays and reports, assessment across the programme also includes presentations, podcasts, online discussion, articles, seminar report, critical discussion, case studies, interview report, portfolio, poster presentation.

Graduates from the programme will have developed transferable employability skills such as research, problem solving, data interpretation and critical thinking as well as gaining the knowledge and practical skills applicable to the sector.

Online students, although already in related employment will also enhance their future employability by benefiting from industry based case studies, guest lectures in the form of podcasts and recorded interviews.
