Program Overview

The Neuroscience program is administered by the Neuroscience Advisory Committee which is responsible to the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. The Neuroscience program is flexible and is intended to accommodate the diverse background of students wishing to enter it, and also takes into account the broad nature of neuroscience research. The program accepts applicants with undergraduate majors in a variety of disciplines including but not restricted to biology, biochemistry, computer sciences, engineering, mathematics, neurosciences, pharmacology, physics, physiology, psychology, and zoology. Applicants who are not graduates of a Canadian or American university are required to take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE); students whose first language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Graduates with a professional degree (M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M.) may also be accepted into the program.

M.Sc. Program

A Master's student must spend at least one year, and will normally spend two years, in full-time study at the University. In the first year, the student takes the required course work and begins research under the Supervisor's direction. The student's Supervisory Committee gives ongoing advice and guidance, and may recommend further course work. By the start of the second year, a provisional thesis research proposal should be approved by the Supervisory Committee, while the student continues research for the thesis. Following submission of the written thesis and a successful oral defense, the student is eligible for graduation.

About the course

In the current business climate, it is increasingly important for business managers and leaders to update and advance their business knowledge and skills. The Doctor of Business Administration offers the opportunity for those with an enthusiasm for learning to gain a professional doctorate, the highest level of professional qualification available in business and management. Drawing on the work of international experts in our Business School you will learn about the latest management techniques and research methods. Whatever your subsequent career, the skills and knowledge you gain will be an asset to you and help you to improve the effectiveness of your organisation and those who work in it.

The DBA is undertaken on a part-time basis and typically takes five years to complete. It is organised around four 2-day learning workshops a year, facilitated by internationally renowned practitioners and researchers who offer contrasting perspectives on management philosophy, organisation development and methodology in management research. These structured workshops both underpin the individual programme of research that participants undertake as a key part of their studies whilst also allowing for continuous peer review and engagement.

The study route is part-time. Attendance at four weekend (Friday and Saturday) workshops per year. There is no taught element to the DBA. The programme of study is organised around four 2-day (Friday and Saturday) facilitated learning workshops a year.

The DBA offers the opportunity to progress beyond Master's level to gain the highest level of professional qualification available in business and management. Participants will not only increase their effectiveness as managers, but bring added benefits to their organisations from their learning and research outputs.

Teaching methods

We offer a varied programme of learning that includes facilitated seminars, practical workshops, web-based learning, case study analysis and traditional lectures. We also provide sessions by visiting staff, practitioners and consultants to give a varied perspective of the topics covered.

You will be supported throughout your studies by a supervisory team who will advise you from the time you register until you complete your Doctorate.

You will undergo two progression assessments on the programme to monitor and advise on the development of your research and a final assessment for the Doctorate.

The final submission must contain a written document that presents and defends a thesis. A thesis is an intellectual position capable of being maintained by argument.

A submission may also contain other works on which the thesis and its defence are based.

Requirements and Details

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required for admission consideration to the Master of Business Administration program.

The MBA program requires a minimum GMAT score of 470 be posted for an applicant's admission packet to be reviewed by the program.

The MBA program may consider acceptance of expired GMAT scores. A determination is made by the MBA director.
If an applicant holds a master-level degree the program may consider the GRE in lieu of the GMAT. A determination is made by the MBA director.
If an applicant has been unconditionally accepted into a different master's degree at St. Cloud State and is electing to change his/her graduate program, a GRE may be considered in lieu of the GMAT.
The GMAT may be waived for applicants who hold a terminal degree such as an Ed.D., Ph.D., J.D., M.D. and D.V.M. A determination is made by the MBA director.
Substitution of any graduate entrance examination for the GMAT is subject to approval of the MBA director and the School of Graduate Studies.
To complete your application you will need to include your transcripts, official GMAT score, a statement of intent, your resume/curriculum vitae and three recommendations.

International students

The MBA program will consider applicants seeking a language admission who provide a strong academic profile including submission of GMAT scores.
Due to the advanced level of scholarship, the MBA program does not consider applicants seeking a conditional language admission.

The Biology Department’s Master of Science program emphasizes research and preparation for further graduate study as well as employment with public agencies and private businesses. A major strength of the program is the option to custom-tailor the overall curriculum to meet the needs and objectives of individual students. Students may pursue a general biology curriculum or may choose to focus their studies in one or more of the following specialization areas: botany, cell and molecular biology, ecology, genetics, microbiology, physiology, or zoology. Students also have the opportunity to study in a state-of-the-art facility with the Fall 2014 opening of the innovative $147 million science building comprising more than 250,000 square feet for teaching, research, and collaborative learning. The Biology master’s requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate credit and six hours of research tools or foreign language. The degree also includes written oral comprehensive exams and a research thesis. Program completion typically requires two to three years.

The Department and Faculty originated and developed this program for graduate studies in Experimental Medicine, and the first students were accepted into the program at the University of British Columbia in September 1987.

Experimental Medicine is the study of the pathogenesis and treatment of disease. Modern experimental medicine represents a rapidly growing body of knowledge involving the determination of diseases processes and the development of appropriate therapies.

The Experimental Medicine Program is intended for individuals seeking a career in research. CIHR Training Program in Transplantation

The UBC Department of Surgery CIHR Transplantation Training Program brings together a multi-disciplinary group of mentors to teach all aspects of transplantation to trainees from diverse backgrounds in a way that did not depend upon their prior knowledge.

Outstanding graduate students and candidates for post-doctoral fellowship positions (MD, PhD or equivalent) are invited to apply for the CIHR Transplantation Scholarship Training Program located in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Transplantation Training Program is affiliated with the University of British Columbia and its teaching hospitals, as well as the British Columbia Transplant Society. Research projects available through this innovative, integrated program encompass all aspects of transplantation including, but not limited to, the following: basic and applied research into the immune system, stem cell biology, tissue transplantation, organ preservation, organ donation and ethical issues related to transplantation, outcomes research and clinical epidemiology related to transplantation.

General Information

The Master of Health Sciences (MHSc) degree is a professional degree designed to give the graduate strong research methodology skills that can be applied to their academic and clinical interests. The program is adapted towards students who have an MD and want to gain research experience by applying epidemiological and statistical methods to a major paper under the supervision of a faculty member.

Students pursue course work in clinical research skills. These skills will include survey and questionnaire design and analysis, systematic reviews, clinical trial design, data analysis and presentation. Qualitative as well as program and economic evaluation methodology courses are available. The underlying precepts for all courses are critical thinking skills. There will be an opportunity to explore health policy and population health concepts but not in depth due to the limited number of credits needed to graduate.

The M.H.Sc. program is designed to provide graduate education primarily for physicians. The emphasis is on the application of rigorous methodology to the study of health issues in populations, spanning assessment, and policy development and assurance.

In the first year, a student should take a minimum of 12 credits of courses. These courses will include the core courses (Oncology 502, 510) and electives. Please note that credit for Oncology 510 will only be given at the end of the student's program of study so cannot be counted as part of the minimum 12 credits required in the first year. The elective courses are decided by the supervisor and the student, based on the student's needs and thesis topic. The elective courses must be approved by the student's Supervisory Committee. Typically, all electives should be courses at the 500 level or above; however, having up to 6 credits of electives at the 300 or 400 level is permissible. As specified in the Faculty of Graduate Studies calendar entry, the minimum requirements are 30 credits of courses numbered 300 or above, including at least 24 credits of courses numbered 500 to 699. These 24 credits include 12 credits of course work, plus a 12 credit thesis (Oncology 549). It is the responsibility of the supervisor and the Supervisory Committee to ensure that the student takes the required number of credits in appropriate courses. The supervisor and committee should also be prepared to assist the student in gaining admission to elective courses that may be blocked to students outside of specific departments.

The Supervisory Committee needs to be formed and the first meeting held within 3 months of starting the program. The names of the Committee and the date of the first meeting along with the Progress Report needs to be sent to the Director and Administrator of the program. The Committee consists of the student's research supervisor plus two other faculty members with appropriate expertise. The composition of the Supervisory Committee must be approved by the Program Director. Please fill out this form and send to Rebecca within three months of starting your program.

The graduate program in Pharmacology was established in 1951, and currently includes programs in cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, viral pharmacology, free radical biology, and drug development. Additional training programs exist in therapeutics, evidence-based medicine, and clinical investigation. The pharmacology graduate program has strengths in basic science as well as translational research.

The graduate program in Pharmacology is a component of the newly formed Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and formalizes the Department's historical research and academic interactions. Within this new structure, additional research programs reflecting the close association between the disciplines of anesthesiology, pharmacology, and therapeutics are now available. Courses in pharmacology are taught at the undergraduate science, medical, dental, and graduate levels.

The program adheres to an 'apprenticeship' model of graduate training, in which graduate students work in close collaboration with a faculty member who is also their graduate supervisor. The goal of the graduate program in Reproductive and Developmental Sciences is to provide students with a broad knowledge of mammalian reproductive and developmental biology, as well as with in-depth expertise in at least one area of research, including reproductive and molecular endocrinology, immunology of reproduction, fertilization and early embryonic development, perinatal metabolism, and fetal neonatal physiology.
