The teaching method is based upon lessons, case analyses, company visits and presentations, group and individual work sessions, out-of class assignments and finalized by a Project Work with a practical approach to a managerial issue pertaining to the luxury industry. To complete the perspective on the luxury environment EMLUX activities include visits such as Baglietto (yachts), Damiani (jewellery), Van Cleef&Arpels (jewellery), Atelier Pino Grasso (fashion), Excelsior (concept store), etc.

Session in Paris

In addition, true to its international vocation, EMLUX has developed a session in Paris, France, with a focus on French luxury that during the past edition was in collaboration with the University of Sciences-Po. The session included not only lectures by French brands such as Lanvin and Chloé, but also a focus on the Champagne and jewellery market, with a visit to the Van Cleef&Arpels atelier and boutique.

STUDY TRIPS

Students will take part in an international study trip of one week in one European Fashion Capital. They will have the opportunity to meet with leading industry professionals and visit companies in the fashion, design and luxury industries.

During the company visits students will work on a project relating to one of these industries and in alignment with their future career ambitions.

INTERNSHIP

Each student will undertake an internship of a minimum of three months in a company of their choice at the end of the classroom part of the program. The internship will contribute directly to the content of the Final Management Project and may take place anywhere in the world.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project which will be undertaken under the supervision of a GGSB professor.
Students will focus on a management aspect of the fashion, design and luxury industries; they are also encouraged to choose the subject of the Final Management Project in coherence with their future career goals. It is possible to complete the project in parallel with an employment or an internship in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in a globally competitive business environment. The program is taught in English, and no prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Students have the possibility of learning French or another foreign language such as Spanish or Chinese during the program.
This language component, although not compulsory, is highly recommended for students who intend to pursue an international career, since companies in the Fashion, Design and Luxury industry are currently recruiting personnel speaking the language of the country in which they are based, in addition to English and in-demand languages like Chinese or Russian.

LOCATION

The MSc in Fashion, Design and Luxury Management will be offered at the GGSB Grenoble, Paris and London campuses.

FIRST TERM

NEOMA BS, Reims (France) from September till December.

This phase will give you an overview of the competitive structure and business models in the Luxury sector. It focuses on the key values of luxury assets. You will learn to understand value creation foundation, discover the fundamentals of luxury management and leadership, and then gradually move on to luxury markets (multicultural perspective) and understanding luxury company assets (turning brands into assets). 

Study tour in Paris :  

At the end of November, the students will benefit from visits of companies and businesses related to the luxury industry in Paris, culminating with a challenge. 

This first term ends with case studies on exploiting assets in luxury markets (defining the potential for growth) before you move on to Milan.

SECOND TERM

MIP POLITECNICO DI MILANO, Milan (Italy), from January till June.

You will explore the creation and delivery of value. You will work on with value management in production, the transformation of cultural products into luxury products and collections, and of superior craftsmanship into outstanding products. You will also study how to convey the luxury experience through communication and retail (Digital Communication, Product & Collection Design, Operations & Quality Management, Supply Chain & Purchasing Management, Channel & Retail Management, and Communication & Promotion).

THIRD TERM

NEOMA BS, Reims (France), and MIP POLITECNICO DI MILANO, Milan (Italy), from July till December

You will undertake a Project or a Professional Thesis. This is also when you may develop professional experience in a firm involved in luxury management, though an optional internship (4 to 6-month, either in France or abroad).

Provides a critical analysis of management trends and developments with respect to the retailing and distribution of luxury goods and services. The dimensions of the luxury retail experience are considered - with a particular emphasis upon the creation of differential advantage through store image creation and customer service.

Research Project: Design and Methods

Introduces students to research approaches and time management skills essential for their research project. The module provides essential knowledge of research design across key areas and adopts a critical perspective in comparing and contrasting alternative research models.

Dissertation

The final element of the programme is the dissertation, which provides you with an opportunity to design and undertake a piece of original research in a selective area of Luxury Brand Marketing. The dissertation can assume one of 3 forms: An Applied Research Project, an Inquiry Project or a Business Consultancy Project.

Leather is returning to prominence as nearly all alternatives require using up non-renewable carbon-based materials. The MSc Leather Technology (Professional) course is unique in that it aims to provide the opportunity to acquire and/or enhance technical skills within the subject of leather technology. Industry leaders are frequent visitors to meet students and provide knowledge on current technical and commercial aspects of leather and its fascinating chain from farm to fashion or one of its many other end uses.

The MSc Leather Technology (Professional) course is delivered to meet student flexibility. In order for you to complete Master’s level qualification, you must complete up to seven modules and an independent research dissertation. During the course, you will complete six compulsory modules and choose up to two optional modules. This ensures that you have a basic understanding of principles pertinent to the leather industry with an added advantage in that you are able tailor the course to meet your particular needs and career aspirations.

With any international trade there is a need to ensure that all formalities are dealt with effectively and risks are managed as much as they can be. International Commercial Law is for you if you want to support and protect business in terms of all areas of trade, different business interpretations in each country and jurisdiction, intellectual property law protection, world trade production and logistics planning, oil and gas and arbitration. Within international property law you also learn about trade mark and brand protection, and cultural property issues as an optional course. You can work in a wide variety of careers in private business within energy, retail, manufacturing, IT and technology, and many other business sectors reliant on international trade to grow their business. You will be responsible for drafting and negotiating contracts within business operations, goods and services and you will have a deep understanding about business. Coursework and assessment

Assessment across the course units varies, and includes a combination of examinations, individual essay, course work and presentations. Problem-solving exercises are prepared and evaluated in groups.

A dissertation of between 12,000 and 25,000 words is also undertaken.

Course unit details

During the course you will be taking 180 credits in all. The eight taught modules during semester one and two total 120 credits and consists of both compulsory and optional taught units which can be viewed in the list below. 

There may also be an opportunity to study during the second semester in an Exchange Institution - details can be found here .

Over the summer period, you will carry out your Research Dissertation, worth 60 credits. 

If you would like to collect primary data (conduct interviews with companies or distribute a survey), you will need to study the 'Advanced Research Methods and Data Collection in International and Comparative Business' elective unit.

Assessment

We review all our courses regularly to keep them up-to-date on issues of both theory and practice.

To satisfy the requirements of the degree course students must complete:

  • eight core courses (15 credits each)
  • a Business Research Project (30 credit)
  • three electives (10 credits each).

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Management, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework may consist of standard essays, individual and group presentations, group reports, classwork, unseen tests and problem sets. Please note that any group work may include an element of peer assessment.

The course commences in September with a Foundations of Management workshop which prepares students with some of the concepts necessary to complete the course, and includes careers and professional skills development workshops.

Intellectual Property Law has become an interdisciplinary field comprised of law, engineering, medical science, economics, and numerous other fields. The MSc in Management of Intellectual Property explores the foundations of this area of law with relation to patents, trade marks and the other core areas within this field.

This Masters of Science is primarily aimed at science and engineering graduates who wish to pursue a career as patent or trade mark attorneys, though it is also open to graduates from all academic backgrounds who wish to study Intellectual Property (IP) at postgraduate level.

There is continued need for expertise in intellectual property law and management in industry, commerce and the innovative and creative industries, and this MSc gives you the opportunity to study IP to a high level. The programme offers a professional stream (for science and technology graduates), and a business stream, available to graduates from all fields looking to expand their knowledge of the application and management of IP.

Professional stream
The professional stream is directed towards graduates (primarily sciences and other technical industries, but also from all other backgrounds) seeking qualification as patent and trade mark attorneys.

Business stream
Students on the business stream will gain profound knowledge of the law and its operation with a view to working in areas such as the press and media, the entertainment industry, the internet and software industries, or the luxury goods industries. What is Intellectual Property (IP) law?

Intellectual Property Law has become an interdisciplinary field comprising law, engineering, medical science, economics, and numerous other fields. This programme teaches the foundations of this area of law with relation to patents, trademarks and the other core areas within this field.

Why study Intellectual Property law?

The MSc Management of Intellectual Property programme was developed as we recognised the increasingly important role of intellectual property in our modern economy. There is an emerging need in industry, in commerce and in those professions concerned with intellectual property law, for science and technology graduates who have studied intellectual property law to a high level. In industry, particularly in small and medium-sized firms involved in research and development, where there is no in-house lawyer or patent agent, there is often a need for an intermediary between the firms and the external lawyer or patent agent for example; or for an executive to handle the inward or outward licensing of technology, to negotiate research and development contracts (where ownership of intellectual property is usually central to the bargaining) or generally to have a basic knowledge of current developments in the field of business law (eg. contract law, product liability law) insofar as these may relate to the firm's present or future activities.

With the introduction of the new business stream we also offer a distinct avenue for graduates from all backgrounds to gain valuable knowledge of intellectual property.

Structure of the MSc in Management of Intellectual Property

Classes usually commence mid-September with examinations in May/June. Courses are taught during the day at Queen Mary University of London campuses and usually take place between 9.00am and 5.00pm.

There is an initial Basic English Law examination which takes place two weeks after the start of the programme. Students then select which stream they wish to undertake.

Compulsory modules:

◦Study project (45 credits)
◦Basic principles of English law, evidence and practice (non-credit bearing but all students must pass this module at the start of the programme)

All students require 180 credits in total.

Professional stream students have core modules plus one free choice half module of 22.5 credits. In addition to this, professional stream students also sit two additional papers to gain exemption from the foundation papers of CIPA and ITMA, both papers must be passed to gain the exemption for either institution.

Business stream students have a free choice of 135 credits (three full modules or six half modules, or a combination of the two.)

All students are required to study the core subject units: Patent law, Copyright and designs law, Law of trade marks and unfair competition, Competition law, and Basic principles of English law, evidence and practice in term one. Occasional additional second semester options may be available.

Our Luxury brand Management course covers a wide range of modules clustered into five main module groupings:

Marketing and Management:

This grouping encompasses a series of modules that will be sequentially planned based on the structure of a marketing plan. The overall body of knowledge acquired by the students will prepare them to:

analyse complex marketing challenges based on practical case studies
allocate resources strategically to achieve pre-determined objectives
craft brand DNAs allowing for the achievement of a sustainable competitive advantage

Business Issues:

The capacity to listen and interpret markets’ signals is a key component of today’s managers. It needs to be continuously cultivated. Within this module grouping students will discover the idiosyncrasies of the luxury industry from an economic and financial view point.

Luxury Environment:

The concept of rarity has traditionally been associated to the idea of luxury. However, while rarity is still an important factor in determining the value of a luxury brand, terms such as “exclusivity” or “space” are now strongly resounding within customers’ minds as alternative descriptors. In this module grouping students will study the historical evolution of the luxury industry and will explore macro trends that are structuring the different international markets.

Luxury Lifestyle:

The series of seminars comprised within the “Luxury Lifestyle” module grouping will allow our students to experience diverse industries and give them more specific insights on each of them. Topics such as Haute Couture, Jewellery, Luxury Watch Making…etc will be covered by specialists of the sectors who will guide the students through their discovery process.

The MSc in Marketing Strategy and Innovation course gives you a sound understanding of the principles and state-of-the art practices of marketing. You will acquire the latest knowledge on market research, customer analysis, innovation and design, brand management, advertising, digital and social media marketing, fashion brand management, storytelling, sponsoring, and many other current marketing topics.

Your lecturers bring these topics to life through interactive classes, case discussions, lectures with leading marketers, and hands-on innovation and communication tasks. You will, for example:

  • work with a London start-up company on a marketing plan for the introduction of a new product to the UK market
  • develop your own business idea, business model, and communication strategy and pitch it to a jury of London marketers and investors
  • compete against classmates in a strategy simulation game where you experience how your marketing decisions would play out in the real world
  • personally meet some of London’s finest senior marketers, from companies such as Unilever, Visa, Interbrand, and Unruly.

Integration Weeks

In the first two weeks at Cass, you will meet your new classmates, the marketing faculty, your course officer, and learn about the library, IT, and career services at Cass. You will also get special classes where you test your own personality, learn to collaborate and achieve targets in multi-cultural groups, solve case studies, present convincingly, conduct academic experiments, and use Microsoft Excel.

Assessment methods

Students will be assessed through a range of different methods. Most courses have both an exam and a coursework assessment component. Students conduct the course work with study groups. Group members learn from assessing each other through peer assessment, mirroring evaluation mechanisms in organisations.

Strategic Marketing of Luxury Goods

Explores how the assets of a luxury company can be used to create and deliver value to stakeholders, particularly customers and stakeholders. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop a managerial overview of how marketing interacts with the other functional areas of the luxury business.

Legal Aspects of Brand Management

Focuses on and contextualises niche aspects of law so as to be accessible to those without prior legal study of intellectual property law or regulation. It provides foundations for critical, analytical and legally creative thinking while exploring legal issues related to trademarks, domain names, passing off, design rights, patent rights, copyright, and issues relating to advertising standards.

Developing Personal and Professional Competence

Enables students to identify, understand, develop and articulate their key personal abilities in the context of their future career aspirations. Students will be given the opportunity to undertake an industry placement, volunteer, study abroad or take part in desk based consultancy in order to be better prepared for their personal and professional life.

Consumer-Led Sustainable Marketing

Designed to provide an in-depth and critical understanding of consumer-led sustainable marketing practices. Students are introduced to the concept of customer insight and its role in marketing decision-making. The module evaluates the psychological, social and economic roots of the discipline of consumer behaviour and relates these to contemporary consumers.

Global Branding and Integrated Marketing Communications

Provides students with a critical understanding of branding theory through an examination of key theoretical frameworks relevant to brand identity, personality, brand relationships and brand culture. Various sectors including fashion, luxury, travel and entertainment are explored while providing students an understanding of marketing communication's mix.

Research Project: Design and Methods

Introduces students to research approaches and time management skills essential for their research project. The module provides essential knowledge of research design across key areas and adopts a critical perspective in comparing and contrasting alternative research models.

Dissertation

The final element of the programme is the dissertation, which provides you with an opportunity to design and undertake a piece of original research in a selective area of Luxury Brand Marketing.
