In partnership with NEOMA Business School, France

The Luxury goods industry deals specifically with the desire for excellence and the exceptional, and has shown in recent years to be an exceptionally resilient industry. Largely due to growing demand in the Asian market and relatively consistent demand from traditional markets, the luxury industry has continued to display promising growth trends in clear contrast to the performance of comparable industries over the last few years. However, in spite of this, the field of luxury management is largely not covered by traditional studies in managerial theory.

The International Master in Luxury Management is a 12 month programme developed in partnership with NEOMA Business School. The students of IMLUX are dividing their time between studying in Reims, the capital and largest city of the Champagne region in France, and Milan, one of the world’s premier fashion centres.

The course, entirely taught in English, will teach students the importance of combining traditional managerial practices and theories with concepts and methodologies required to meet the needs of the modern luxury goods industry. This requires superior and outstanding craftsmanship, excellent and cutting edge design skills, unique customer experience delivery throughout all interactions with customers, and the building of a strong meaning through branding.

These are achieved through a number of formative and hands-on methodologies, including:
• Teaching and instilling the fundamentals of luxury management, with special attention paid to the supplementation of skills and knowledge essential to luxury brand management and therefore not typically taught in conventional management studies.
• Providing outlets for students to get in touch with key players in the industry, allowing for the development of meaningful connections and networking opportunities.
• Providing students with opportunities to gain working experience in cooperation with luxury based companies to assist in the progression of working aptitude and skills.

The Master analyzes the fashion system as a contemporary industry that finds great opportunities for development thanks to a new way of understanding the marketing mix: the fashion product of the third millennium is sophisticated but wearable, original but timeless; the price is affordable but a "mental" discriminant for the target; distribution is global, yet maintaining a strong local recognition with a consequent customization of the product in different markets; communication makes use of the new marketing models (digital and social networks, blogs, viral communication, sensory communication, video communication) and the power acquired by the reputation of the brand in the consumer's mind.

The Master in Luxury Marketing Management analyzes luxury as an artisanal creation, the result of tradition, innovation, know-how, quality, both intrinsic and perceived. Luxury is also investigated as an economic instrument that promotes social distinction influencing purchasing decisions, but also as an exercise of the industrial power that sees the highest growth potential. The sectors of the luxury industry examined are: fashion, design, art, jewelry, watches, beauty, travel, accommodation, yachts, private aircrafts, cars, private banking, real estate and personal services.

The Marketing & Branding unit will cover subjects, such as distribution policies, the value of the leading international brands in the fashion industry, the suggestion of the life style in the communication of the brand and the product.

The course analyzes the behaviors and needs of consumers, the trends, the development of luxury items, the approaches to marketing, sales and customer satisfaction based on the Internet and social media. Students will learn the use of apps, m-sites, and social media for making international campaigns.

Together with anthropology, art and fashion, psychology, color theory, students will examine the contemporary fashion, brands and international designers, protagonists of current trends, and key factors to be able to interpret the dynamics of the industry today and in the near future.

The course includes communication in the fashion industry and subjects such as strategic planning, advertising, the basics of journalism, creative writing, the copy writing, editing, and graphics.

Of particular importance are the analysis of the work of the press office, the media relations and public relations, sponsorships, direct product and brand communications through an event.

The Master ends with the Final Project realized on a chosen topic among seminars and presented in a personal portfolio, aimed at checking the skills acquired.

Facilities and Special Features

Throughout the course you are taught by experienced academic staff with specialist knowledge of their subject areas. Taught modules are delivered using a combination of lecture and seminar sessions, with a strong emphasis on participation and discussion. To bring concepts and theories to life, extensive use is made of real world case-studies and practical exercises supplemented by extensive on-line learning materials

To integrate these modules and enrich the experience of the student there is a supporting programme of workshop activities and events. Typically these include a Summer School as well as guest speakers, marketing games, study trips and learning skills development sessions throughout the year.

Summer School

In July 2015, students studying on the course benefitted from a week-long Summer School that provided the opportunity to have marketing concepts brought to life through study trips, visiting speakers and participating in a Marketing Challenge based on Northampton’s leather heritage.

The students were able to find out how leather products are produced with a tour of the tannery at the University’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies. Professor Mike Redwood spoke on the way luxury leather brands market themselves and the particular issues they face in developing markets.

The fashion industry has become an important actor in world social and economic development. Yet too often fashion communications have been analyzed exclusively from the point of view of the Western fashion system—or simply been dismissed as superficial or irrelevant.

The optional fashion track within the Master of Arts in Global Communications (MAGC) addresses this misperception. It offers courses taught by theorists of fashion and professionals in the field. Students get the chance to explore the many facets of fashion communications.

From traditional to cutting-edge

The specialized fashion track of MAGC provides an in-depth background applicable to careers in traditional fashion communications, as well as in several expanding and cutting-edge aspects of the industry including:
-The marketing of global luxury brands.
-The rise of ethical fashion, such as cause-related marketing, Labor Behind the Label, and sustainable consumption.
-NGO fashion and textile production for sustainable development.
-Cultural implications of globalized fashion.
-The digital revolution in fashion journalism and marketing including blogs and websites.
-Fashion centers and cities worldwide.

Students take introductory background courses which provide theories and models to prepare them for study of specific fashion issues in modules. These modules are taught by visiting professionals and researchers, top in their fields.

This specialized knowledge will be supplemented by and integrated with courses for the Master of Arts in Global Communications.

Structure of the specialized track

As in the regular MA in Global Communications program, coursework can be completed in three semesters, including the summer. The length of the internship or thesis may vary, however—many students choose to take additional time for these components. The program requirements for the MAGC Fashion Track are as follows:

-Four fashion modules (8 credits)
-Two courses out of a list of seven core options (8 credits)
-Two electives chosen from any of the Global communications graduate course offerings (8 credits)
-Final project: thesis or internship (8 credits)

Core courses focus on the fundamentals of global communications—and particularly how they relate to the fashion industry and fashion theory. Modules include such specialized topics as Asian Fashion Communication, Applied Design Thinking for Sustainability, and Paris Style, An Emerging Designer Pop-up Store, among many others. You also have a choice of practicums in sustainable development, NGOs, or Branding and courses in PR and journalism.
