Degree Information

Our philosophy is to base our teaching on real-world issues in facilities management (FM) at high-performing organisations in both the private and public sectors. Our students develop the ability to think critically about all facets of the FM services - maintenance, engineering, projects, catering, cleaning, security and property management, by considering engineering and management theories and concepts and their applications to FM situations in these service lines. This allows our students to use their experience to explore these applications in their current or future careers.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and an original dissertation (60 credits).

The majority of graduates are engaged at a senior level in facility management operations, consultancy or design. Some students use the MSc as a foundation for subsequent MPhil/PhD research. The production, reproduction and transformation of urban space via socially, economically, and environmentally just methods presents a complex challenge for professionals. This MSc combines cultural, social, economic, political and spatial analysis to recalibrate the urban design project, presenting a holistic response in which informality and marginality are central features.

About this degree

The programme will equip students with a political economy understanding of space; a comprehension of the needs, abilities, aspirations and forms of resistance of urban dwellers; the ability to respond with strategically co-ordinated proposals to leverage local abilities to meet local needs; and an ability to critically engage with the practice of urban design and architecture in developmental processes – particularly in the Global South.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of weekly lectures, seminar presentations, group exercises and workshops. The BUDD studio includes a fieldwork project in an urban reality of the Global South, developed in partnership with local organisations, networks of communities, slum dweller federations, universities and governments alike. Students are encouraged to explore different tools, concepts and ideas throughout the programme and test these during the field project. Assessment is through coursework, design work, written examinations and the 10,000-word report.

The programme enables graduates to work in NGOs and local government – facilitating community organisations and households to improve their living conditions. Graduate destinations range from UK-based organisations in the public, private and community sectors, to governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations, which operate in a development capacity in the South. Recent graduates have also been employed by international NGOs and aid and development agencies and architectural and design practices. The School of Psychological Sciences & Health, in collaboration with the globally renowned Strathclyde Business School is offering a unique new Masters programme. The distinctive nature of the programme lies in its flexible online mode of delivery.

Successful completion of this course, accredited by the British Psychological Society, will provide students with either no background, or an unaccredited background in psychology, the route to gain Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS).

It also provides opportunities to develop specialist knowledge in modules provided for the programme in Psychology for Business.

The programme will aim to provide you with:

What you’ll study

Class content and student participation in our new Masters in Psychology with a specialisation in Business will be delivered entirely online across a wide range of formats.

The course features 180 credits of study in total, available either full time over 12 months or part time over two years.

Full-time students will complete the equivalent of 60 credits taught classes in semesters 1 and 2. You'll begin working on the empirical project in semester 2, with the majority of the empirical project work being completed over the summer months.

Part-time students will complete 90 credits by the end of Year 1, and the remaining 90 credits in Year 2. The course includes 80 credits of the core domains of Psychology, 40 credits of specialist modules delivered by organisational psychologists in Strathclyde Business School, and a 60 credit empirical research project.

Approaching an entirely new subject should be stimulating, not daunting. At every step of the way we have designed our Masters course with the student new to the topic in mind. Carefully scripted and prepared learning tasks and objectives will incrementally build your knowledge, structure your learning, and build your confidence in each topic we cover, empowering you to achieve in a supportive environment.

Each module in the Masters in Psychology with a specialisation in Business is centred round a suite of studio-based lectures, which are studied online. While module subjects will be supplemented by further assigned individual reading and reflection, opportunities for student engagement will be frequent, varied, stimulating and challenging.

Student-centred activities may feature individual or group-based online activities, quizzes, discussion boards, wiki creation verbal reports and podcasts. You'll have the opportunity participate in online and webcam-based tutorial meetings throughout the course, interacting with their fellow students and lecturers.

Assessment

Our approach to assessment in the course is varied, with different approaches being adopted both within and across modules.

Assessment will be through a mixture of course work, for example individual essays or reports, or perhaps a collaborative writing task with other students, or in some cases an online quiz or a verbal presentation. Additionally some modules will feature class exams. 

At every step of the way we have designed our Masters course to support student learning, and you'll be carefully guided through each assessment activity, with continuous feedback on your progress.

Careers

A degree in psychology, accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), is the first step towards the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the BPS, and is a prerequisite for entry onto professional postgraduate psychology training programmes (eg MSc Organisational Psychology, Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, MSc Educational Psychology). A number of graduates will use their accredited degree to pursue future professional training, following gaining relevant experience. An accredited Masters in Psychology is a mark of quality, meaning the course and institution has achieved the high standards of quality in its provision that the British Psychological Society demands. Psychology graduates have a lot of options open to them. Many go on to further study or to careers in teaching, human resource management, social work, as well as many other areas.

The knowledge, understanding, and skills acquired by psychology graduates are highly valued by employers in the graduate job market. Along with a core professional qualification in a mental-health field, applicants also need:

Explore astronomy and astrophysics at an advanced level, with an emphasis on theoretical astronomy. This course is for you if you have graduated from an applied mathematics- or physics-based degree and wish to learn how to apply your knowledge to astronomy. It’s one of only three full-time, broad-based astronomy MSc courses in the UK.

How will I study?
Teaching is by:
-Lectures

You’ll contribute to our weekly informal seminars, and are encouraged to attend research seminars.

Assessment for the taught modules is by coursework and unseen examination. Assessment for the project is by oral presentation and a dissertation of up to 20,000 words. A distinction is awarded on the basis of excellence in both the lecture modules and the project.

You can choose to study this course full time or part time.

Your time is split between taught modules and a research project. The project can take the form of a placement in industry, but usually our faculty supervises them. Supervisors and topics are allocated, in consultation with you, at the start of the autumn term. You work on the project throughout the year. Often the projects form the basis of research papers that are later published in journals. Most projects are theoretical but there is an opportunity for you to become involved in the reduction and analysis of data acquired by faculty members.

In the autumn and spring terms, you take core modules and choose options. You start work on your project and give an assessed talk on this towards the end of the spring term. In the summer term, you focus on examinations and project work.

In the part-time structure, you take the core modules in the autumn and spring terms of your first year. After the examinations in the summer term, you begin work on your project. Project work continues during the second year when you also take options. Distribution of modules between the two years is relatively flexible and agreed between you, your supervisor and the module conveners. Most of your project work naturally falls into the second year.

This MSc is for you if you’re a graduate from an applied mathematics- or physics-based degree and wish to learn how to apply your knowledge to cosmology.

It is one of only two MScs in this subject area in the UK. Our emphasis is on observational and theoretical cosmology in the pre- and post-recombination universe.

How will I study?

Teaching is through:

You’re assessed by coursework and unseen examination. Assessment for the project is an oral presentation and a dissertation of up to 20,000 words. You’ll contribute to our weekly informal seminars and are encouraged to attend research seminars.

You can choose to study this course full time or part time.

Your time is split between taught modules and a research project. The project can take the form of a placement in industry, but usually our faculty supervises them. Supervisors and topics are allocated, in consultation with you, at the start of the autumn term. You work on the project throughout the year. Often the projects form the basis of research papers that are later published in journals. Most projects are theoretical but there is an opportunity for you to become involved in the reduction and analysis of data acquired by faculty members.

In the autumn and spring terms, you take core modules and choose options. You start work on your project and give an assessed talk on this towards the end of the spring term. In the summer term, you focus on examinations and project work.

In the part-time structure, you take the core modules in the autumn and spring terms of your first year. After the examinations in the summer term, you begin work on your project. Project work continues during the second year when you also take options.

Distribution of modules between the two years is relatively flexible and agreed between you, your supervisor and the module conveners. Most of your project work naturally falls into the second year.

This course offers a cross-disciplinary approach to the study of environmental management, policy, the circular economy, sustainability and sustainable development in both developed and developing countries.

The course began in 1992, hot on the heels of the Rio Earth Summit that brought to light sustainable development, climate change and biodiversity as issues of national and international concern. You’ll learn about major environmental issues and the circular economy. You'll understand the methods in which environmental considerations and climate change are used in development and planning decisions. You'll be expected to probe, for example, strategies and policy options for achieving sustainable development without increasing the ecological footprint of economic activities.

Opportunity to do MSc dissertation linked to Malawi

Flexible learning

Home students can also choose to study through Flexible Learning. This is initially a non-graduating route. You register for one module at a time and have the option to build up credits eventually leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification.

This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

Home students who do not meet the normal MSc entry requirements for this programme are welcome to apply through the Flexible Learning route.

Learning & teaching

The MSc involves a curriculum of three core classes and a very wide range of optional classes. Each module is taught two to three hours per week over eight to 11 weeks.

In addition, you'll also undertake a dissertation between June and August. Progress to the dissertation is dependent on performance in the instructional modules.

Careers

After graduation, many of our graduates get an Associate membership of IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment) by doing the online exam. Becoming an Associate member of IEMA allows you to use the AIEMA suffix after your name — a way to prove to employers, clients and colleagues that you’re on the great career path that the MSc has given you.

Most of our students also become members of the IAIA (International Association for Impact Assessment) as the University offers a bulk discount membership for students. The IAIA launched IAIA Work Experience Program in 2017, which is only available to IAIA members (including student members). This programme builds on the internationally recognised research strengths of the Communications Systems and Networks group within the Smart Internet Lab. This group conducts pioneering research in a number of key fundamental and experimental work areas, including spatial channel measurements and predictions, information theory, advanced wireless access (cellular and WLAN) and RF technologies. The group has well-equipped laboratories with state-of-the-art test and measurement equipment and first-class computational facilities.

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers excellent facilities for you to rehearse practical caring skills prior to your practice placement. You will have access to a simulated 6-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, will allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

The School of Health Science is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio, City TECS. City TECS is specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies, providing you with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies whilst you study.

Teaching and learning

The programme is taught by academic staff from the School of Health Sciences, supported by clinical colleagues. Most of the modules are worth 15 credits (or 1\8 of the total programme). However, some modules are worth 30 credits.

A range of teaching and learning strategies are used, depending upon the nature of the material; these will include lectures and small group tutorials, group work, simulated practice and visits.

Assessment

The assessments are equally as varied, and will include course work, online projects, invigilated examination and practical examination.

Your dissertation is worth 60 credits (1\3 of the entire programme) and is a piece of research undertaken with the supervision of an academic member of staff with a special interest in your topic. They are appointed by the programme director or the module leader.

Modules

The exact sequence of modules is negotiable, and will depend upon your availability to study (in the case of part-time students), your electives and the occurrence of the modules.

Core modules

You are advised to undertake the core compulsory modules during the first year; APM001 (Critical Approaches to Advanced Practice, 15 credits) during PRD1 and HRM001 (Introduction to Research Methods and Data Analysis, 30 credits) during PRD1 or PRD2

There are discipline-specific modules which are APM022 (Pathophysiological Approaches to Advanced Practice), which is normally taken in PRD1 of the first or second year and NMM024 Medicines Management, which is normally taken in PRD2 of the first or second year. Each of the discipline specific modules is worth 15 credits and involves one day a week at City, University of London for 5-7 weeks, plus an additional 100-120 hours private study.

The dissertation module represents the pinnacle of your scholarly achievements, and is usually undertaken last (60 credits)

As part of the class Independent Study in Collaboration with Industry you undertake a work placement where you report to the offices of a hydrogeological organisation and actively contribute to one of their ongoing projects.

This is a very valuable experience for you as it allows you to work as hydrogeologists for a number of weeks exposing yourself to a working environment as well as allowing you to build up contacts within industry.

Attendance

One year full-time study involves attendance at classes over two terms, plus a dissertation during the third term. 

Part-time (open to UK/EU students only) involves class attendance in Years 1 & 2 and a dissertation in Years 2 or 3. Depending on timetables, just two days work release per week may be needed for 24 weeks in the year. 

You can also study this course part-time through online distance learning, over 36 months, offering a flexible learning mode of study.

Accreditation

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

If you can't attend this course full-time on campus, there are various Flexible Learning options available to you.

Professional Development Courses

This is initially a non-graduating route. You'll register for one 10 credit class at a time, and have the option to build up credits. This will eventually lead to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification.

This option is popular with students in employment, who might want to take classes for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

A range of qualifications will be considered for entry.

Distance learning

You can also study this course by Distance Learning, which is based on three years part-time study of 60 credits per year.

This allows you to complete the course by studying online at home at a time that suits you, without attending at our Glasgow campus. This means you can study while balancing your existing work and family commitments. This option is suitable for students located anywhere in the world.

Graduates with an MSc in Hydrogeology are in very high demand as there is an expected shortage of hydrogeologists that will continue for the next decade.

Assessment

The core units contain both formative and summative assessments, and it is during these units that you should learn the range of competencies and knowledge necessary to succeed on the course.

For your project work you can undertake either an extended digital film technology project (working in groups or individually) or a dissertation on relevant theoretical topic. The course utilises: oral presentations of academic arguments; oral pitches of stories; essays; case study projects; self-reflective logs and a wide range of practical work.

The assessment philosophy of the MSc begins with understanding your individual starting position. Hence work will be diagnostic (often at the outset, as with proficiency in academic practice and writing), formative, summative and evaluative. The procedures used for the assessment of your achievements will correspond with the knowledge, abilities and skills developed through your degree programme.
