Teaching and learning

A mix of approaches is used in the delivery of the Construction Management postgraduate course. Some modules follow a traditional lecture format. In others, there is a greater emphasis on case studies and learning through active participation.

In general, considerable team-work in various practical exercises and group assignments is required.

All modules involve undertaking a certain number of individual and/or group assignments (coursework) during the teaching terms. Many of these assignments involve essay writing. Furthermore, four modules are additionally assessed by comprehensive final examinations.

Completion of modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Post-Graduate Diploma. The completion of modules, examinations and a dissertation will lead to the award of the MSc.

You can choose to take course full time or part time.

Full-time

A 12-month full-time option during which you attend all the taught modules during Semesters 1 and 2, and complete your Project within the 12-month period of the degree.

Part-time

A 24-month part-time option during which you attend half the modules in a first 12-month period, followed by the other half the next year.

Students are expected to complete all the modules in this two year period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence which permits engagement by part-time students alongside full-time students. The dissertation project is undertaken by part-time students in the second year.

Teaching takes place on two full days per week, with some lectures (Law) taking place in the evening. In addition, there is a small number of team-working weekends, plus a Foundation Week at the start of the programme each year, which is attended by all (full- and part-time) students.

This method of delivery is popular with students working full-time within reasonable commuting distance of City, University of London (probably within the M25 cordon), as well as to full-time students, by concentrating tuition into two days per week on average, and encouraging flexibility for independent study.

Modules

The Construction Management MSc is made up of 180 credits, with 60 credits awarded to the Project. Attendance is required to obtain 120 credits from the taught modules.

The taught part of the Construction Management Masters course is based on ten core modules (a total of 120 credits), of which five are carefully chosen to provide you with a broad foundation in various aspects of the theory and practice in general management.

The remaining set of modules cover important aspects in the practice of planning, financing, and delivering large-scale civil engineering and infrastructure projects. During these modules, you will focus on the development of practical management skills within a construction context.

The culmination of the course is the Project: your dissertation (60 credits). This is a major individual research exercise on a topic within the broad area of construction management conducted under the direction of your supervisor.

Our philosophy is to base our teaching on real-world issues in facilities management (FM) at high-performing organisations in both the private and public sectors. Our students develop the ability to think critically about all facets of the FM services - maintenance, engineering, projects, catering, cleaning, security and property management, by considering engineering and management theories and concepts and their applications to FM situations in these service lines. MSc Data Science students can participate in our professional internships programme, which is supported by the Professional Liaison Unit. For example, the individual project can be carried out as a 6-month internship in one of the companies with which City has a long-standing relationship and history of collaboration in the big data and data science area.

The teaching and learning methods we use mean that students’ specialist knowledge and autonomy increase as they progress through each module. Active researchers guide your progress in the areas of machine learning, data visualization, and high-performance computing, which culminates with an individual project. This is an original piece of research conducted with academic supervision, but largely independently and, where appropriate, in collaboration with industrial partners.

Taught modules are delivered through a series of 20 hours of lectures and 10 hours of tutorials/laboratory sessions. Lectures are normally used to:

  • present and exemplify the concepts underpinning a particular subject
  • highlight the most significant aspects of the syllabus
  • indicate additional topics and resources for private study.

Tutorials help you develop the skills to apply the concepts we have covered in the lectures. We normally achieve this through practical problem solving contexts.

Laboratory sessions give you the opportunity to apply concepts and techniques using state-of-the-art software, environments and development tools.

In addition to lectures, laboratory sessions and tutorial support, you also have access to a personal tutor. This is an academic member of staff from whom you can gain learning support throughout your degree. In addition, City’s online learning environment Moodle contains resources for each of the modules from lecture notes and lab materials, to coursework feedback, model answers, and an interactive discussion forum.

We expect you to study independently and complete coursework for each module. This should amount to approximately 120 hours per module if you are studying full time. Each module is assessed through a combination of written examination and coursework, where you will need to answer theoretical and practical questions to demonstrate that you can analyse and apply data science methods and techniques. 

The individual project is a substantial task. It is your opportunity to develop a research-related topic under the supervision of an academic member of staff. This is the moment when you can apply what you have learnt to solve a real-world problem using large datasets from industry, academia or government and use your knowledge of collecting and processing real data, designing and implementing big data methods and applying and evaluating data analysis, visualisation and prediction techniques. At the end of the project you submit a substantial MSc project report, which becomes the mode of assessment for this part of the programme.

The MSc in Cyber Security is a one year full-time course. On completion of eight taught modules and an individual project you will be awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree.

The teaching and learning methods used increase the levels of both specialisation of content and autonomy of learning as you progress through the programme. You will be expected to undertake independent study and substantial coursework assignments for each module, amounting to approximately 120 hours per module. The coursework takes many forms, including programs, theoretical work, and essays, and is primarily formative, but also contributes to module assessment.

Coursework will be used across all of the security specific modules to ensure that you get appropriate hands-on operational experience of relevant aspects of cyber security, including testing and analysis. Some of the coursework may be organised in ways that shadow larger scale exercises, such as the Cyber-Security Challenge.

The individual project (full time) is carried out over the summer period, and if done without a placement, lasts approximately 14 weeks or 600 hours. If undertaken within an industrial or research placement, the project period extends by up to six months.

The assessments focus on activities that you need to undertake either as part of your role or to support you in developing your professional practice. The assessment for the project module is in the form of a traditional dissertation reporting your work.

You will cover areas of Masters-level computer science, such as research methods and scientific presentation and analysis skills. Issues covered include: theories and history of development; changing approaches to poverty reduction; practical policy, programme and research skills.

Each programme is taught by a team of multi-disciplinary specialists who work closely with students to address individual interests and concerns. Course details

Students will explore theories of development in historical context from (roughly) 1945 up to the present in the single compulsory module. The theories are then applied to contemporary development approaches and issues. Throughout, the emphasis is on you developing a critical understanding of the evolution of development theories over the last half century and its implications for present day thinking about development.

Students can then select the remaining five modules to suit their own needs and interests. They could, for example, take modules or rural and urban poverty reduction, on conflict and development or gender and development. They could also take modules on project management, disaster management or governance. Many other modules are also available to choose from.

Learning and teaching

Teaching takes place over two ten-week terms, utilizing a range of teaching and learning methods, including short lectures, problem solving, role play and group work.

By the end of your study you will gain:

  • An in-depth understanding of competing development theories – their origins, their continuities and their differences – and the ability to critically evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
  • An understanding and ability to critique the distinctions between economic, social and political approaches to development.

Teaching and learning

You learn through a mix of lectures, class discussions, seminars, presentations, case study analyses, interactive computer-based exercises, a virtual learning environment, guided independent learning and individual supervision.

Lectures are discussion-oriented and there is a lot of group work giving you the opportunity to discuss solutions to problems, or to design a public health programmes drawn from your own experiences. Group presentations also form a significant part of the programme.

In terms of contact hours, for every 15-credit module you study, you will have 30 hours of teaching time and around 120 hours of self-directed/independent study. This means that as a full-time student you will have 3 hours of teaching time and 12 hours of self-directed study for each course each week.

Assessment

You are assessed on a range of areas including your project dissertation, exams, assignments and group work.

Modules

From the basic concepts of epidemiology to the kinds of socio-economic conditions that influence health equality, the programme’s core content gives you a strong foundation in public health theory and research methods.

There are five core modules, two electives (optional) modules and a dissertation. The dissertation gives you an opportunity to design and carry out a major research project on a public health topic of your choice. Many students use the dissertation as an opportunity to apply their learning to a public health issue that is important to them. The full course content represents 180 credits which includes 60 credits for the dissertation. This course will give you a thorough grounding in research methods so you will be able to analyse data and design evidence-based public health programmes. You will also develop a thorough understanding of public health theories – from exploring the socio-political context in which public health is positioned to unpicking the key measures you need to put in place to inform policy, practice and research.

Mental illness has a huge impact on the physical health of an individual. This is an innovative programme taught by one of the leading centres of excellence in this field internationally. IDD hosts the Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding and the Journal of Civil Wars and has produced the leading textbook in this area, Conflict, Security and Development. IDD staff also edit two book series in Statebuilding and Conflict and Development for Routledge. As such the programme draws on our world-leading research to provide an offering that is research-led but also strongly informed by our regular involvement in policy in this area. We are a development department that is looking at peace and conflict. This gives us a particular range of modules and an approach that is unique amongst our competitors, most of which are delivered from an international security perspective. We are currently one of the market leaders in security and development and that particular relationship is in demand with increasing concerns about development aid, refugees, civil wars and the implications for post conflict reconstruction.

It is now clearer than ever before that the greatest development challenges of our time – poverty, conflict, famine, poor governance etc. – are driven primarily by political, not technical, factors. The aim of this programme is to provide theoretical and empirical training to students to enable them to understand the role that politics plays in both facilitating and undermining development, in both the North and the South.

The programme is aimed at recent graduates preparing to work in international development and for professionals working for NGOs, donor agencies or development projects and focuses on a range of key questions, including:

This programme enables you to study development with a specific focus on poverty and inequality, both key aspects of current development policy discourse. Issues examined include: definitions and indicators of poverty, inequality and development; causes of poverty and inequality; poverty reduction strategies; cross-cutting issues such as gender and conflict; practical policy, programme and research skills.

Each programme is taught by a team of multi-disciplinary specialists who work closely with students to address individual interests and concerns. Every student is allocated an academic tutor to support them in their academic progress throughout the year. The department has a long history of teaching students from across the world, and recent students have come from 99 different countries and a wide variety of professional and academic backgrounds.

Course details

Students will explore theories of development in historical context from (roughly) 1945 up to the present in the core compulsory module. The theories are then applied to contemporary development approaches and issues. Throughout, the emphasis is on you developing a critical understanding of the evolution of development theories over the last half century and its implications for present day thinking about development.

The relevance of sociological categories of class, religion, ethnicity and gender in both disaggregating levels of poverty and inequality, and in understanding the processes which foster poverty and inequality in development will be explored in one of the two modules which give this programme its particular identity and focus.

The aim of the other programme specific compulsory module is to examine different approaches to defining and measuring poverty and inequality, to understand the impact of global and national systems on poverty and inequality, to reflect on the potential and limitations of some useful analytical frameworks and methodologies, and to consider some interesting approaches to project and policy led development.

Learning and teaching

Teaching takes place over two ten-week terms, utilising a range of teaching and learning methods, including short lectures, problem solving, role play and group work.
