Overview

The Graduate Entry Medicine course is delivered by the University of Nottingham in partnership with Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and is based in a purpose built medical school on the Royal Derby Hospital’s site.

The four-year medical course commenced in September 2003 and is open to graduates of any discipline. There is an annual intake of 87 home/EU students who are based in Derby for the first 18 months of their course. For the Clinical Years, these students will combine with the students from the five-year course and whilst on placement will rotate around many of the teaching hospitals in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire, and in the community. Experiencing different sites across the counties is an educational and desirable feature of your training. Currently our students are on placements at the following hospitals:

The course aims to widen access to a broader range of applicants than school leavers with A levels. It is intended to build on the intellectual skills acquired by students who have undertaken a first degree.

After successful completion of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BM BS) degree, graduates are required to undergo a further two years of foundation doctor training. Full registration is granted by the GMC at the end of the first year of this training. Non-British nationals graduating from UK medical schools are subject to work-permit restrictions.

Eligibility

Graduates will need a minimum of a lower second-class degree and must apply through UCAS, course code A101.

In addition you must have sat the GAMSAT examination (which is designed to ensure the entrants have the requisite knowledge and reasoning skills) in either September 2014 or September 2015.

NB: registration for GAMSAT and application to the School of Medicine via UCAS are separate processes and both are required for admission to the graduate entry course.

A great deal of emphasis is placed on work experience, as we want to ensure that you are making a well-informed choice about your future career, something which a few days shadowing would not provide. Relevant experience could include volunteering in a care home, working as a healthcare assistant within a hospital.

Faculty

For clinical courses of this sort, teaching and supervision is provided in co-operation with staff affiliated with the local NHS Mental Health Trust, the Sussex Partnership Trust (SPT), who have the requisite clinical training and teaching experience.

Careers
You’ll develop the skills to apply for professional accreditation as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Further admission requirements
Along with a core professional qualification in a mental-health field, applicants also need:
-A foundation-level knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and some experience of providing structured psychological therapies or interventions.

And either:
-A lower second-class (2.2) undergraduate honours degree or above (or equivalent).

Or:
-The ability to study successfully at postgraduate level, demonstrated through a portfolio of evidence of previous written work produced in a training or work context.

Plus:
-Ready access to suitable clients: clients with common mental-health (CMH) presentation of anxiety and depression for our Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and CMH problem pathway, clients with CMH presentations and clients with complex difficulties for our CBT and Complex Difficulties pathway, and clients with CMH presentations and children and young people (CYP) for our CYP pathway. Note that clinical placements may be available with the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to complete the practice element.

In order to be accepted on the course you must also pass an interview.

The conversion year is a studio based learning environment that delivers a combination of key skills that support the communication of projects, investigating the idea that our laboratory is a designed ecology and that you will learn about the landscape across its range of scales.

The second part of the year looks at the idea that landscape is a sequence of interrelated designed environments connected by land, ecology, water, climate and infrastructure, sitting in a cultural context that extends from Parish to global political and economic systems.

Students can choose to study towards a Postgraduate Diploma, or a Master's qualification.

Modules

The PG Diploma modules are: professional practice; critical urbanism; critical design; designed ecologies; research methods: dissertation/thesis design project; design thesis project 1; design thesis project 2; design thesis project 3: technology.

Master’s award modules: The above modules along with a dissertation.

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework in all modules except for professional practice, which is partly assessed by a written exam; the majority of coursework is related to design projects, although some modules require the submission of written papers, drawn theoretical analysis and construction and planting design workbooks or studies.

Career prospects

On successful completion of the PgDiploma you can apply to become a licentiate member of the Landscape Institute (LI), the chartered body for landscape architecture in the UK. Full chartered status is gained following completion of the LI’s Professional Practice Examination after a further two years in practice. Students have found employment both during and on completion of the course, in a wide range of design practices in the UK and overseas.

The Human Resources and Development Management pathway is aimed at those who are interested in management in the public, state or NGO sectors in developing, transitional or newly-industrialised countries. This is primarily a public sector management, not a business management, programme, although some of the themes covered are relevant to both sectors. The pathway encourages students to consider and analyse how a changing global environment has shaped the ways in which work is organized and managed and how ideas about leadership and management may be applied differently across cultures and contexts.

Over your study period, you spend up to 120 days working in an Early Years setting (this will vary depending on whether you are taking the Employment route or the Graduate route to achieve EYTS).

Placements

There is no formal requirement to do an industry-based placement as part of the programme. However, some students arrange to undertake their dissertation research within a company or within their part of the world. A recent student investigated the future of coal-fired generation in Turkey, and another student is combining a work placement at The World Energy Council with their dissertation.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised into modules comprising four consecutive day courses taken at a rate of one a month or so. This format makes the programme accessible for students who want to study part time while working.

Full-time students are also welcome. Whether you choose to take the course as a part-time or full-time student, we will offer a great deal of support when it comes to helping you prepare for the modules and project work. You will be expected to devote a significant part of your non-taught hours to project work as well as private study.

Our course is led by an exceptional group of experts in energy, supply, demand management and policies. As an example, one of our module leaders leads the UK contribution to writing international energy management standards and informing policy through the European Sector Forum for Energy Management. This forum looks at methodologies across the continent. There is also input to global standards development through the International Standards Organisation (ISO). At City we bring on board people with well-established academic careers as well as leaders from the energy industry. The programme has strong links with industry and commerce and involves many visiting lecturers who hold senior positions in their fields.

The Energy and Environmental Technology and Economics MSc gives you the opportunity to consider the role of International Energy Management Standards. You will explore the opportunities these standards provide for global service users and providers in relation to reducing energy costs and the environmental impact of energy use.

You will discover the range of current European and International Standards, explore why they are needed and how they are developed, and examine the benefits they deliver through case studies.

The UK has had a leading role in developing these standards in terms of both their writing and implementation. For example the Energy Audit standard, which forms part of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive, Article 8, mandates audits for private sector, non-SME organisations. In the UK this has been implemented as the Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme (ESOS).

Modules

Each course module is taught over four consecutive days of teaching with one module each month. Alongside the teaching you will have coursework to complete for each module. The modules run from October to April, and in the remaining time, you will concentrate on your dissertation, which forms a significant part of the programme.

The dissertation gives you the opportunity to create your own questions and to decide on your own area of interest. It should be a detailed investigation into a subject on energy supply and/or demand, with your own analysis and conclusions outlining the way forward. You may see the focus of your dissertation as a future career path, but whatever your area of study, these final few months of the degree should embody your vision of the future.

You will take four core modules and have six elective modules from which you can choose four topics from diverse subjects relating to energy supply and demand. These include energy in industry and the built environment, renewables, energy markets from the purchaser’s perspective and water supply and management. The latter has close parallels, and directly engages, with energy. You start the course with an introduction to energy and environmental issues and energy policies and economic dimensions in the first term, but you do not need to follow the course in any particular order from this point onwards.

If you are interested in sustainability, you have the option of taking up to two elective modules from the MSc in Environmental Strategy offered by the University of Surrey.

Completing eight modules and four examinations and four modular assessments will lead to a Postgraduate Diploma. Completing four core and four elective modules and a dissertation will lead to a Masters degree. If you are interested in this course may also be interested in the MSc Renewable Energy and Power Systems Management.

You’ll study

Learning & teaching

Some modules are taught by lectures via webcast. Others are taught in a traditional face-to-face format.
All core construction law modules and the compulsory module in Research Methods are taught in the evenings (normally 6-8pm) or by webcast.
Many elective modules are also taught in the evening, though some are available during the day.

Assessment

Assessment is based on your performance in coursework and/or the written exam papers. For those seeking award of the LLM you’ll need to complete a dissertation.
