The Postgraduate Certificate/ Diploma/ MSc programme in Lower Limb Preservation in Diabetes is open to all those who practise or wish to progress their knowledge in Diabetes, Limb Preservation and related areas. The course is designed for, but not limited to: specialist podiatrists, nurses, medical, surgical and healthcare professionals. is targeted at those currently working in or with aspirations to gain education and / or employment in the field of diabetes and limb preservation and is rooted in regional, national and international drivers towards integrated Diabetes care. The programme is multidisciplinary and multi-professional, with rich and challenging content and sound educational process. Delivery of the programme is offered entirely online, maximising a learning approach that fully embraces the opportunity for international practitioner engagement.

- Purpose -

The educational programme aims to offer the student the opportunity to develop evidence based theoretical concepts of limb preservation transferable to professional practice, informed by a critical knowledge and understanding of integrative care requirements for those patients “at-risk” due to diabetes; who are in danger of primary amputation (patients with diabetes, end-stage renal disease and/ or peripheral sensorimotor neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease), and for those who have already suffered an amputation and are at risk of moving toward a second amputation, or have unacceptable dysfunction.

Supported by our own, highly experienced staff, you will also be taught by clinical experts who are in current practice.

Key lectures and case discussion sessions will be delivered on campus days by the consultant faculty, who will also guide the distance learning element of the course coupled with work-based learning tailored to individual aspirations. The course runs full-time over one year and part-time over three years giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

Part-time study with elements of distance learning is delivered in blocks for those involved in busy clinical practice.

Observational clinical placements in hospitals, specialist units and sports clubs are arranged for full-time students in the specialist areas of lower limb orthopaedics.

Format

Delivery is by full-time (one year) and part-time attendance (three years) at the University. Please note: international applicants are only able to apply for the full-time route.

A programme of formal lectures, case discussion seminars and workshops, together with online learning is delivered to students by a team of orthopaedic consultants, radiologists, advanced therapists and other specialists. Attendance is between three to six days depending on the module with distance online learning released weekly, live webinars and tutorials using a variety of media. Both full and part-time students are taught together.

All supportive material from the taught days is recorded on our virtual learning environment, Blackboard.

Each module in the course employs a variety of teaching strategies considered most appropriate for delivery of the aims and objectives. A student-led approach to learning will be encouraged throughout with directed and personal study will perform an integral part of the course.

The clinical module, lower limb, covers the advanced assessment and differential diagnosis of orthopaedic and sports-related disorders, including pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative surgery management and rehabilitation strategies.

For those attending full-time, additional observational placements are an integral part of the course. Placements are offered in key orthopaedic departments and sports clubs.

The Podiatry with Independent Prescribing MSc is for practising podiatrists wanting to build on their skills and knowledge, advance their professional practice, and earn a further professional and academic qualification.

A range of optional modules means you can create your own study programme to suit your professional or personal aspirations, and includes the opportunity to blend podiatry with related disciplines.

You will learn from expert lecturers who are all active members of the SCP. This ensures that both the team and the curriculum stay up to date with podiatry policy and practice.

The University of Brighton developed and awarded the first degrees in podiatry in the UK and we have been recognised by podiatry's professional bodies for the standard of our teaching. You will have access to our excellent facilities including our own hospital, and Human Movement Laboratory.

On graduation, you will be able to fulfil advanced professional and autonomous roles as a non-medical prescriber. You will be able to confidently select appropriate medications for patients based on relevant physical examination, assessment, history taking and diagnosis.

Course structure

Leaf Hospital:

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

The course helps you to develop your clinical and communication skills, and broaden your knowledge of podiatry and complementary education while earning a formal qualification.

We are known for our flexible approaches to practice-based learning, with course durations and intensities that can be adapted to your individual needs and outside commitments.

The course is designed to fit around your existing practice hours. Week-long intensive study blocks allow attendance for students based in the UK, EU and internationally.

The University of Brighton developed and awarded the first degrees in podiatry in the UK and we have been recognised by podiatry's professional bodies for the standard of our teaching. You will have access to our excellent facilities including our own hospital, and Human Movement Laboratory.

Our expert lecturers are all active members of the SCP, ensuring that both the team and the curriculum stay up to date with podiatry policy and practice.

Our high quality teaching and research are renowned, and have an applied focus. We have established strong links with specialist practice educators to ensure the provision of support and guidance both within the university and in practice.

Course structure

To be awarded the Podiatry and Education MSc, you must successfully complete six modules and a dissertation. Alternatively, you can study individual modules, being awarded a PGDip on completion of six modules, or a PGCert on completion of three specified modules.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, simulation in our high-tech Human Movement Laboratory, and practice-based learning in our Leaf Hospital.

Leaf Hospital:

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

Human Movement Laboratory:

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

This intensive programme runs over 45 weeks per year, for two years. Your time on the course will be balanced between campus-based study and clinical practice.

The course begins in September. Formal lectures are an integral part of the curriculum and you also learn through seminars, student presentations and interactive workshops, some of which will be shared with students on the undergraduate program. You will be assessed through essays, exams, practical reports, presentations and your professional development portfolio.

Your practical placements will be mainly at our own Leaf hospital and the local NHS trusts. Day placements for students are arranged with clinics and hospitals across the south-east England and London. There is also an opportunity for self-funded placement at the University of Malta.

Facilities

Leaf Hospital:

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

Human Movement Laboratory:

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Careers and Employability

Our graduates enjoy excellent employment prospects, typically securing roles in advanced practice, clinical teaching, research, education and training, and a variety of positions in the NHS and private sector.

They are working in the UK and worldwide in Europe and Canada, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Singapore.

Podiatrists engage with patient care in a wide range of practices from independent work in the community or private practice to multidisciplinary work in a hospital setting. The scope of podiatry practice varies from general foot care (nail, callus, corns) to musculoskeletal care (for example, tendinopathy, provision of insoles, orthoses and footwear), minor surgery (for example, toenail removal) and wound care (for exampe, diabetic foot ulcers).

With further study and extensive training, graduates can train to become a podiatric surgeon, who is allowed to perform the surgical treatment of the foot and its associated structures.

Graduates of this course are also equipped for further study at MPhil and PhD level.

Our MSc Sport and Health Sciences provides you with a sound grounding in research methods and analytical procedures relating to sport and health sciences. The programme presents opportunities to employ theoretical concepts in applied sport, health and exercise settings and allows you to choose from a diverse range of modules allied to our research expertise.

Learning and teaching

The MSc Sport and Health Sciences presents an academic challenge whilst also providing you with the skills to apply theoretical concepts in real-world laboratory and field settings. The Masters programme is intended to enhance teaching and learning through research and applied practice derived from sport, health and exercise. It will provide you with the opportunity to employ theoretical concepts in applied sport, health and exercise settings and acquire a range of transferable skills to develop as an autonomous and reflective individual.

Delivered within a friendly and supportive learning environment, the programme draws upon innovative multi-method and multi-disciplinary research and teaching by our leading academics. You will have access to state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities including modern laboratories for biomechanics, physiology and psychology. You will also have the opportunity to be involved with on-going research projects and develop key transferable skills, which has led to a number of students subsequently seeking PhD study.

Careers

A dedicated careers day and tailored career support for each student are provided. Graduates of the programme have typically found employment in a variety of sport, exercise, leisure management and consultancy, and health promotion settings. Recent examples include: community based obesity practitioners and physical activity facilitators; lifestyle support worker and public health officers for NHS trusts; sports development officers; and a research assistant at the Medical Research Council.

This programme is suitable for sport, exercise and health-related professionals seeking continuing professional development. Recent examples of professionals graduating from our programmes include medical doctors, practice nurses, physiotherapists and youth sports managers/coaches.
