- A Bachelor's degree with good honors not lower than second class or to achieve an average grade of not lower than "B"

Course exemption

Students may be granted exemption from courses if they have taken similar or equivalent courses in their postgraduate studies with satisfactory performance at least a “B” grade or above. Supporting documents such as academic transcripts, course syllabus must be provided. Maximum of six units may be granted. Upon exemption from courses, students will be required to replace the exempted courses with electives of equal units.

Applications will be assessed individually and subject to University’s final approval.

You’ll study

You'll follow a curriculum of five core modules and a wide range of optional modules. Each module is taught for two to three hours per week over eight to 12 weeks. MSc students also undertake a dissertation.

Work Placement

The Client-Based Environmental Entrepreneurship in Practice class has been developed for this MSc. This class has no formal teaching and instead sees you carry out a four month project of interest to a client, while at the same contributing to ecopreneurship in practice.

In addition, as part of the class “Independent Study in Collaboration with Industry” you can apply to work with industry projects (such as the Carbon Clinic in collaboration with Carbon Trust).

This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

The full programme would typically be delivered on a part-time basis and studied over three academic years, with students completing the ‘taught’ modules to achieve a PgD or UCD within the first two years and those continuing to MSc completing the Masters Dissertation within an individually negotiated timescale over a one to two year period.

How will it benefit me?

Completion of this award will be representative of an individual’s commitment and on-going industrial Continuous Professional Development (CPD) as required by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS). Successful candidates will gain accreditation from a leading academic provider in the sector but also an award which has the potential to add gravitas and improve the perceived status of those who undertake it, while providing them the opportunity to further develop their higher level discipline specific skills.

Entry requirements

The programmes are offered at different levels of study, therefore for each award there is a different entry requirement:

UCDip (level 5)

Candidates should have at least five GCSEs at grade C or above, or equivalent. These should normally include English, Mathematics and a Science or their equivalent. Candidates should also be able to provide evidence of a sufficient standard of core educational skills to benefit from, and succeed in higher education and substantial industrial and professional experience and responsibility or an NVQ at level FE2,3 or 4 as appropriate.

For candidates with no higher education qualifications, such experience should normally be of 5 years or more.

PgC / PgD / MSc

For admission to the University College PgC/PgD/MSc Veterinary Pharmacy candidates would be expected to have obtained a minimum of an upper second class degree in Pharmacy or a related animal science subject.

Applications may also be considered from candidates with a lower second class honours degree, Foundation Degree or good HND (together with related industrial or professional experience of at least two years) or a Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate or equivalent. For all applicants, evidence of previous qualifications is required. However, all are judged on their individual merits. Non-graduates with significant work experience are also invited to apply. Where a candidate's honours degree (or equivalent) was not assessed in English, their English language skill will, typically, be evaluated by interview and/or via an approved English Language test.

It's also suitable for professionals from fields such as music production and technology, engineering, environmental health, and many others.

LSBU has been offering courses in Acoustics for over 35 years, and houses the only centre for study with this level of facilities in the South-East of England,including full-size reverberant and anechoic chambers and an exceptionally well equipped and staffed laboratory, with access to the very latest instrumentation and technology.

This is a professionally focused applied degree and practical work is an essential part of the course, giving you direct experience of modern measurement equipment and techniques. The modules are directly relevant to the practice of acoustics, and also consider the broader aspects of investigation and control of the built environment. Half of teaching time is spent in the laboratory, and this focus is reflected in the balance between coursework and exams.

Individual modules can be taken separately as part of continuing professional development. For the final project module you'll devise and complete a piece of investigative work in an area of interest in considerable depth; the topic and scope of the project are selected with the guidance of an academic supervisor. For those applicants who already hold an Institute of Acoustics Diploma, there is an option of direct entry to the second year of the part-time Masters course.

Modules

- Acoustics laboratory
This module aims to convey the nature of sound and vibration with a considerable depth of knowledge through practical means, giving you an understanding of how to accurately measure sound, how sound behaves, and practical aspects of noise control. It introduces you to the basic principles of acoustics, familiarises you with modern sound level meters, measurement parameters and measurement techniques for noise surveys, room acoustics, sound absorption and sound insulation. You should be able to produce an accurate report to consultancy level which is critical of the laboratory, experiment, technique or instrumentation by comparison to the appropriate international standard.

- Architectural acoustics
The module provides specific acoustics knowledge as relevant to buildings and in particular rooms. The aims of the module are to gain understanding of room acoustics, measurement of room acoustic parameters and the various means of modelling the sound field in rooms across the frequency range.

- Measurement and control of sound
This module is designed to teach, at an advanced level, the physical mechanisms by which noise may be created, as well as to provide the analytic and practical skills required to control noise and vibration from a variety of sources. The module instils the knowledge of how to undertake noise and vibration measurements to meet specific acoustical standards and guidance.

- Subjective and environmental acoustics
Teaches, at an advanced level, the physical mechanisms by which the ear/brain interact to hear. The aims of the module are to: appreciate how human hearing deteriorates dependent on a number of variables; how legislation has developed to protect workers and how hearing protection can help under certain conditions; to appreciate the difference between subjective loudness and objective measurements; to learn how acoustic comfort criteria and legislation have been developed and applied to protect people in different environments.

- Environmental management
The module develops understanding of the way that human social and economic activities impact on the environment. The emphasis is on how managers can assess and influence the environmental impact of their particular organisation, with reference to key technologies and the political and legal constraints within which organisations must operate.

- Research methods
This module focuses on the essential communication and analytic skills required in research, including techniques for successful dissertation writing.

Completion of the MSc satisfies the academic requirement for corporate membership of the Institute of Acoustics. The process of attaining Chartered Engineer status is offered through the Institute o fAcoustics or the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

Many types of new buildings need careful acoustic design to make them sound good, to protect them from nearby noise sources, to make them productive and pleasant places to live or work in and to make them commercially successful. This is especially true for places like concert halls, but equally applicable to universities, residential buildings, leisure centres and many others. Day-to-day tasks could include: design meetings with architects and other engineers, noise surveys of existing and new sites, design using computer and physical models, communication of the design to the client and design team, project management, site supervision and commissioning of the finished projects. - Environmental noise:
Noise is a major issue for society: 80 million EU citizens live in unacceptably noisy areas. Environmental health officers consider noise in planning new developments, such as housing affected by noise, or new noisy activities, and enforcement of existing noise concerns including the sources of complaints from the public. Consultants in environmental noise work in small specialists firms or large multinational consultancies, including engineering firms. Junior staff measure noise and use computer models to predict noise levels from new developments such as roads, railways and industrial plants. Degree information

Our Primary PGCE develops effective, confident teachers whose classroom practice is informed by an advanced knowledge of educational theory, and who will continue to learn and reflect throughout their careers. We will help students to acquire the skills and expertise to support children’s learning, prepare them to teach in an inclusive urban environment, provide professional development in all national curriculum subjects and ensure that students show a concern for professional values and demonstrate the positive attitudes and behaviour expected from pupils.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules, two at Master’s and one at undergraduate/Bachelor’s (level 6) level and three school placements.

Where less than 60 credits are achieved at level 7, but are successfully passed at level 6, a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) will be awarded, including a QTS recommendation. Students who complete the level 7 modules but fail the Professional Practice module will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) without a QTS recommendation. There are no optional modules for this programme.

An additional pathway is also available for those who wish to study part-time.

All Student Teachers take the Professional Practice module which is primarily assessed through the two main school placements, associated tasks and portfolio. The relevant Lead School will make the arrangements for school experience.

Students will be supported through a virtual learning environment and will participate in school placements. Assessment is through assignments, audits, feedback and tutorials. The main theme of the teaching and learning aspect of this MSc is to encourage you to develop the necessary skills to understand and communicate advanced theoretical and research-based knowledge of nutrition to people who participate in sport and exercise. Learning methods reflect the wide variety of topics associated with applied sport and exercise nutrition and include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, practical exercises, laboratory sessions and project work. The research project will be supervised on a one-to-one basis.

Student performance in each module is usually assessed by evaluation of the quality of written or design work, and verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project case work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

Many sports are becoming increasingly professional in their approach to training and nutrition. For example, many sports clubs now employ full-time nutrition consultants. Career prospects outside sport are perhaps even more exciting. The NHS offers an increasing number of opportunities for students with specialist training in exercise nutrition to support GP referral schemes and other healthy living programmes. The growing awareness of health within society, coupled with misunderstandings about the relationships between physical activity, nutrition and health has led to an increasing demand for graduates who can deliver evidence-based solutions and advice at all levels. Research or teaching within further or higher education also provide potential career opportunities.

Graduates progress to a diverse range of careers including exercise and lifestyle consultants based within hospitals and private practice. Various graduates have secured full time and part time work with professional sports teams as well as the Institutes of Sport in the UK. Successful candidates will have the opportunity in the future, possibly as early as 2018, to sit a Fellowship examination in Podiatric Sports Medicine which will be awarded by The Directorate of Podiatric Medicine, College of Podiatry, London.

Students will have the opportunity to transfer from the PGCert to an MSc/PGDip in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

The programme is delivered by Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) within the William Harvey Research Institute and as such, will place the School at the forefront of provision of Podiatric Sports Medicine (PSM) within the UK. Working in sport is a largely practical discipline and the programme's emphasis lies firmly on regular clinical experience. Students would benefit from the expertise of first-class teaching facilities, molecular, immunological, microbial, forensics and Imaging laboratories, and from the pollen research and forecasting expertise that exist within ISE/NPARU.
The last three months are spent on a practical research project that can be undertaken within ISE/NPARU at Worcester or in a related company or another institute at the UK. Strong links exist with several biotech companies or universities.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must hold a minimum of a minumum lower second-class Bachelor's degree in life sciences from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.

GMC specifically addresses the requirements of those seeking a comprehensive theoretical and practical understanding of the role and dynamics of large corporations in the global economy and international affairs. The programme aims to prepare students for a variety of roles in government departments, regulatory agencies, international organisations (such as the OECD or WTO) industry bodies, NGOs, as advisors, managers, researchers or project professionals with multinational corporations, trade unions and advocacy organisations.

You will develop a comprehensive understanding of the role and dynamics of large corporations in the global economy and international affairs, enabling you to critically analyse and design solutions to regulatory and public policy changes related to Multinational Enterprise activities globally.

As well as gaining skills in policy analysis, project management, advocacy, negotiation and strategic communication, you will have the opportunity to take a European Study Tour of international organisations, a media internship with SOAS Radio or volunteering roles, addressing themes such as global disarmament, war crimes, and corporate accountability.

Attendance

The programme may be taken in one year (full time) or in two or three years part time with the schedule designed to allow participation by those in full time employment. Participants may choose a combination of modules to meet their professional needs and personal interests. The programme is convened on a multi-disciplinary basis, and teaching is through lectures, tutorials and workshops conducted by SOAS faculty and visiting specialists.

Lectures for GMC modules usually take place in the evening (18.00-20.00) and associated tutorials are repeated in hourly slots starting as early as 14.00 for some modules, with the latest taking place at 20.00. Students sign up for tutorial groups at the start of term and stay in the same group throughout the academic year. There is a minimum of two and a half hours formal teaching a week (lecture and tutorial) for each GMC module taken. Practical exercises may take place at weekends.

The programme provides multidisciplinary training in a range of neuroscience topics, especially those that are relevant to psychiatry and neurology, through three taught compulsory fundamental modules, one taught specialised module (from a choice of seven) and an approximately 20 week research project. Students choosing a research project in the same subject area as their specialised module may graduate with an MSc Neuroscience in that speciality.

- Course purpose -

Neuroscience as a degree subject is still under-represented in the undergraduate sector and, consequently, most students coming onto the programme have degrees in subjects other than neuroscience. The aim of the programme is to extend the students' theoretical knowledge of the neurosciences and to develop, through their chosen research project, the practical skills that they may wish to practise in their future careers. This may be in further full-time study in an academic research environment or employment in an academic, clinical or pharmaceutical organisation.

- Course format and assessment -

Each of the Fundamental modules (A1-A3) is assessed with a written examination and a coursework essay. The Specialised modules are assessed with a written examination and the writing of an abstract to an unseen published paper (presented without the abstract). The research project is assessed by a research report, a laboratory notebook and a poster presentation.

Career prospects

Past students have obtained PhD positions both in the UK and overseas, entered medical school, the pharmaceutical industry, or trained as clinical psychologists; clinicians have obtained clinical research positions.

It also emphasizes the importance of a user-centred focus in the design of human interaction with advanced technologies and sociotechnical systems to ensure effectiveness and reliability as well as comfort, health and safety and satisfaction for the user, consumer or employee.
