A limited number of places may be available with full tuition fee support for Scottish-domiciled/EU students, studying full time, on this course starting in September 2018 to help talented students join this key growth sector for the Scottish economy. Fees will be funded by the European Social Fund and Scottish Funding Council as part of Developing Scotland’s Workforce in the Scotland 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Fund Programmes.

Facilities

All masters students have access to a wide range of building simulation codes which include commercial software, as well as bespoke codes developed in-house. Students can run these codes on their personal laptops or access any one of our computer laboratories, including access to our recently commissioned 2000-node high performance computer cluster.

One of our key strengths at Loughborough is our experimental facilities which enable us to validate computer models. Our masters students have access to a vast range of experimental facilities, some of which are used during the taught modules and all of which are available for use by students during their research dissertations.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling, field measurements and independent research. Students have access to a wide range of air flow and thermal modelling software as wells as extensive laboratory facilities. Following nine taught modules, students pursue a research dissertation of their choice which draws on the skills developed during the taught modules.

Students are assessed by a combination of traditional written exams, coursework and assignments. This split is typically 70/30 (exam/coursework) or 50/50, although some modules, such as research methods and concept design are assessed entirely based on coursework which comprises individual presentations and group work.

Scholarships

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

Course content

The topic of the main courses of the first year of this international master will be the consumer’s perceptions of food and introduction to food and wine physical chemistry, microbiology and food processes. Then students will rapidly focus their courses (lectures, tutorials, practicals and projects) in biotechnology, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, microbiology, mass transfer, food processes. Back to Dijon in the second year, the students have to choose an option to specialize in microbiology and microbiological processes or in physicochemistry applied to food and wine science. Finally they will have to perform a six months research internship in a laboratory (in France or in a foreign country) to validate a master thesis.

During the second semester of the first year all the students have to perform an international mobility in another European university through an Erasmus learning agreement.

About the University

The University “Bourgogne Franche – Comté” has been ranked 2nd best French University in the field of Food Sciences (Shangaï, 2017). Most of the lecturers and scientists involved in the Master’s program are members of the Food and Microbiological Processes research unit (UMR PAM). The PAM Research Centre plays a major role in scientific and technological advances in the field of food and wine. The joint scientific focus of all the members is to understand the physical, chemical, and biological phenomena that determine food quality with the ambition of developing new products and new food processes. In addition to the pedagogical team, international invited lecturers will be involved.

Course content

Food plays a much bigger role in consumers' lives than simply feeding them. Each day, humans make several food choices. Their diet has considerable impact on their nutritional status and health, but also on the environment.

A greater understanding of the reasons for consumers' choice of foods is needed in order to set up effective programs and develop new products, to improve dietary patterns in line with recommendations, and to increase food sustainability. Although seemingly simple, food choices are complex behaviors that depend on many factors and their interactions. In this Master’s Degree, a key focus is placed on the physiological and psychological factors of food choice.

You will acquire sensory and consumer research methodology. You will come to understand the mechanisms of hunger, satiety and satiation, and the factors involved in palatability. You will study the influence of stress and mood on food behaviors, and explore the ways in which cultural context influences food choices. You will examine the importance of representation and consumer attitudes towards food, as well as the reasons for resistance to dietary change. You will understand why it is necessary to take on this issue in an interdisciplinary way.

MP2 is a 2 year, course-based, full-time international research Master's Degree focused on Microbiology and related processes and Physicochemistry applied to food and wine Processes, offered by the University of Burgundy - Franche-Comté and AgroSup Dijon. Indeed, today several factors influence and explain the dynamism of employment of researchers and managers in the field of the food science and food-processing industries:

Course content

The topic of the main courses of the first year of this international master will be the consumer’s perceptions of food and introduction to food and wine physical chemistry, microbiology and food processes. Then students will rapidly focus their courses (lectures, tutorials, practicals and projects) in biotechnology, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, microbiology, mass transfer, food processes. Back to Dijon in the second year, the students have to choose an option to specialize in microbiology and microbiological processes or in physicochemistry applied to food and wine science. Finally they will have to perform a six months research internship in a laboratory (in France or in a foreign country) to validate a master thesis.

During the second semester of the first year all the students have to perform an international mobility in another European university through an Erasmus learning agreement.

This programme aims to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to provide leadership and technical support in public health in middle and low income countries. It covers a wide range of topics in public and global health, including key disciplinary skills in epidemiology and social science and applied topics such as disease control and programme management. The programme has a specialist focus on humanitarian assistance, examining current policies and practice in the field and exploring approaches to responding to the challenges of contemporary humanitarian problems. Following the taught component, participants complete a dissertation including a period of applied research either overseas or in Liverpool.

AIMS

LSTM education courses are taught within a dynamic environment by staff working at the cutting-edge of research in tropical medicine and global health. They are designed to enable the professional development of the student, to be relevant to students from both the UK and overseas and to promote approaches to study that will enable students to continue their learning into the future. 

This course aims to: 

Provide a critical understanding of a range of health policies and strategies in a variety of social, epidemiological, cultural, economic and political settings in middle- and low- income countries.

Enable students to analyse critically, evaluate and conduct responsive, public health-related research and apply evidence to everyday practice.

Produce graduates who are experienced, committed, informed, proactive and effective professionals, capable of taking substantial and leading professional roles in order to promote improved health and well-being in middle and low income countries.

Facilitate high quality learning that is informed by critical analysis of current research.

Develop independent and reflective approaches to study that will enable graduates to continue to learn in the future.

Provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding of humanitarian issues needed to practise at a senior level in organisations involved in the prevention of and response to humanitarian crises.

CAREERS

There are many career opportunities within the field of Public Health throughout the world. Public Health, and in particular our response to humanitarian crises, has been highlighted by the recent War in Syria, the refugee camps and mass migration from the area, natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunami’s worldwide, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, H5N1 Avian Influenza, Zika Virus, and MERS. People with public health skills and a knowledge of the humanitarian sector are highly sought after. Past alumni of this course typically go and work for health ministries, health departments, national or international NGO’s, UN Agencies, aid organisations, or universities. The international research project allows you to ‘prove’ yourself in the sector by working with an NGO for your research in a mutually beneficial manner.
