School Direct (Tuition Fee) is a route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Trainees join other student teachers on the established Business Studies PGCE programme at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE), whilst undertaking their teaching experience at their host school or alliance.
Students will understand how business is taught in schools, how pupils learn and make sense of the evolving nature of business. This is reflected in the range of business related courses that are now offered by schools, sixth forms and colleges, with the focus in some instances on entrepreneurship, work skills and new business technologies.
Students will be joining the largest Business PGCE programme in the country, allowing them to benefit from a team of tutors with a wide range of expertise of business, both inside and outside of the classroom. Students will also be able to develop strong peer networks, share ideas, resources and advice amongst your cohort of fellow PGCE Business students.
Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.
The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.
Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).
You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with business studies mentors who support you through your school placements. The Professional Practice module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and a portfolio.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placement at the host school or alliance. Assessment is by the observation of practical teaching, assignments and a portfolio (which links into continuing professional development in the induction year).

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as teachers of business and economics education, while others have jobs as middle and senior managers in schools. Graduates in this area can also be found working as education officers, initial teacher educators, teachers in international schools and as entrepreneurs running businesses offering consultancy in schools. The majority of graduates find employment in London schools, with many gaining promotions and responsibilities early in their teaching careers.
Graduates of the Secondary PGCE programme are highly employable and sought after by schools and colleges in London and beyond. Almost all graduates secure their first teaching post by the time they finish the PGCE programme. Graduates of the programme also have great career prospects, with many becoming Head of Department or a Head of Year within 2-5 years, often acting, in their schools, as mentors to new PGCE student teachers. Many of our graduates become senior teachers (such as Assistant Headteachers or Head of a Faculty) in 5-8 years of graduating, and some are now Headteachers. Others have developed their careers as subject specialist teachers and educators, both becoming lead teachers in the classroom and researching, writing and advising other teachers themselves. The Secondary PGCE Programme is a springboard into a rewarding career, not just as a skilled teacher, but as an educational leader.
This programme prepares students to teach across the 14-19 age range, helping them to develop the professional skills and attitudes to teach business in schools and colleges, as part of academic (A level and GCSE) and BTEC courses.
Tutors on the Business Education PGCE are skilled classroom practitioners with extensive experience in secondary schools and colleges. We aim to give students insight into the continuously evolving subject of business and its application to classroom teaching. Our collaborative approach ensures that students developed into thoughtful and highly-skilled teachers who can work confidently and flexibly within the broad framework of the 14 to 19 curriculum.
The dynamic nature of business means that students benefit greatly from practical experiences and learning outside of the classroom. The IOE offers students the unique ability to visit places such as the London Stock Exchange and the Bank of England; we also have strong links with the Economics and Business Education Association (EBEA) and provide access to national and regional Business Education conferences.
This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).
The MSc in Luxury Management & Marketing Marketing is a 16-month program delivered by emlyon business schoolin partnership with Parsons School of Design at The New School (New York City) and in association with London College of Fashion, preparing students for an international management career in the luxury industry. It offers you a true multi-campus and multi-country experience by studying in Paris, London or New York and Shanghai.
You’ll acquire the basics of management, discover how to apply specialist management knowledge to the luxury industry, focus on the Fashion and Lifestyle Industry (London) or the Luxury Design Industry (New York City) and master fundamental skills that you will transpose to the luxury dimension of your choice. As part of our ‘Business with’ collection of programmes, the MSc Business with Financial Management is designed to give you an overall understanding of the inner mechanics of business, whilst building the general skills desired for a wide variety of roles and growing your business acumen. The programme is designed around a set of modules that are common to all ‘Business with’ pathways. The Graduate Diploma in Business will support you in managing the transition into one of our postgraduate degrees. The MSc in International Business Economics enables you to study a combination of business and economic subjects. You will develop the ability to understand causal relationships between various economic variables, critically evaluate the strategic decision-making process in business, and have an insight into global business policy issues.
This course aims to provide you with the quantitative and economic analysis skills to understand underlying economic principles and gain insight into the way institutions and business practices operate in an international context.
There are excellent employment prospects for economists with these skills in business and finance, government agencies and management consultancy.
This MSc is based on the completion of compulsory modules and a range of optional modules. The choice is made in consultation with the Programme Director and in accordance with the rules laid down for the award.

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.
This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. The MSc Business Economics / International Business Economics is for students who want to apply economics to real-world issues. From transfer pricing, to the complexity of financial markets and the pros and cons of EU membership, you will need to be strong at statistics and quantitative methods to get to grips with the material that makes up the core modules. The MSc is designed to give you the tools to apply your knowledge, so we expect you to be downloading the free FT app and getting on top of current issues from the second you start.
On the MSc Business Economics / International Business Economics you won’t be deriving equations. Instead, we use them to apply economics to current business issues.
The programme has been designed to equip students with a wealth of resources combining data banks from City’s Cass Business School and School of Arts and Social Sciences. This means you have access to everything from Datastream, Bloomberg and Bankscope, to Morning Star and Orbis.
MSc Business Economics / International Business Economics maximises City’s central London location. With high-profile guest lecturers such as Jim O’Neill, former Chief Economist from Goldman Sachs, you gain insight straight from the City studying in the heart of "the world's biggest financial centre" (Economist, 2012.)
The course is taught through a series of lectures (which are also available as online resources), seminars, student presentations and interactive group work. Computer laboratory teaching gives you practical experience using software packages to develop statistical and econometric skills that are formatively assessed by computer-based exercises.
You also undertake a research project or economics literature survey on a subject that is of interest to you. This must cover a current topic that is within the remit of Business Economics or International Business Economics.
Pre-sessional activities covering statistics, mathematics, and Stata run in September before the start of term. These are available for all students who secure a place on the MSc International Business Economics and MSc Business Economics courses. Pre-sessionals are included in your degree fee and are designed to prepare you for the course. We therefore strongly encourage you to make every effort to attend. Dates of the sessions for 2018 are TBC.
You are assessed by coursework and examination. Your overall degree result is based on your performance in the taught modules and the dissertation.
The core content is covered in the first term, making this a programme with a lot of choice. There is an economics and econometrics focus, but you also can study topics including the economics of micro-finance, e-commerce, asset pricing and the history of economic thought.
If you choose to study MSc International Business Economics you will need to study the International Business Economics elective in the second term, and your research project has to cover more than one country. So, for example, you could not focus on a single-country subject such as privatisation in the UK.
When it comes to employer recognition, City is well established. City has become synonymous with quality and the Government Economic Service regularly recruits postgraduate students from this programme. There is also a range of career service events across the School of Arts and Social Sciences and Cass Business School, which you can attend throughout the programme.
