The emergence and expansion of local and regional trade agreements, free labour flow and rapid growth of globalisation in general have necessitated reliable and sustainable transportation and logistics systems. Moreover, the remarkable increase in visits to and from the UK during the last ten years, growing UK trade and special events, such as the London Olympics held in 2012, all demand well-established transport systems, logistics planning and management expertise.

This programme is designed to meet the needs of home and international graduates who have not previously specialised in logistics and transport or those who are interested in expanding their knowledge and practical capabilities in this area.

The programme tries to explore the key notions of transport and logistics and discusses new approaches to the design and analysis of transport and logistics systems. In addition to the basic concepts of passenger and freight transport, and local and global logistics, the programme focuses on contemporary issues, such as e-business, transport systems modelling, and environmental issues in transport and logistics, thus ensuring it is up to date and fit for the current needs of employers.

Energy Technology research covers many areas, including sustainable technology, conventional technology, and energy efficiency and conservation. The interdisciplinary postgraduate research program in Energy Technology in the School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology provides long-term support to our ongoing educational training and fast-developing research in technology in general.

Sustainable Technology
Sustainable energy sources including all renewable sources, such as plant matter, solar power, wind power, wave power, geothermal power and tidal power, improving energy efficiency, fuel cells for transportation and power generation, nanostructured materials for energy storage devices including fuel cells, advanced batteries and supercapacitors, nanostructured electrodes, graphene-based anode and cathode materials, battery system and package management, organic and inorganic photovoltaic materials, gasification of biomass for energy production, biorefinery and bioprocessing for energy generation, and innovative technologies for converting and recovering solid wastes into energy.

Production of Ethanol from Cellulosic Materials
Enhanced use of biogas produced from microbial conversion in landfills of municipal solid wastes, wastewater, industrial effluents, and manure wastes, use of planted forests for production of electricity either by direct combustion or by gasification, use of highly efficient gas turbines, energy scavenging for mobile and wireless electronics which enable systems to scavenge power from human activity or derive limited energy from ambient heat, light, radio, or vibrations.

Conventional Technology
Three main types of fossil fuels, namely coal, petroleum, and natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) derived from the production of natural gas, nuclear energy, solid waste treatment and management, radioactive waste treatment, reactor materials, durability and fracture mechanics of reactor materials and structure, nuclear reprocessing, environmental effect of nuclear power, hydropower dam structures, turbine materials and design, hydrology and sediment, water quantity and quality, sources of water, environmental consideration in the design of waterway systems, advanced technologies for conventional energy production, such as gas hydrates, microwave refining, and synthetic fuel involving the conversion process from coal, natural gas and biomass into liquid fuel.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation
In electronics: energy integration for chemical and energy industries, energy-efficient computation, high-efficiency power electronics, power management integrated circuits, low power ICs, green radio, customized building for energy-saving, LED for solid state lighting, smart grids, wireless sensor networks, battery-powered electronics, and mobile electronics. In energy-efficient building: lightweight heat-insulating building material, customized building for energy-saving, energy-saving from solid state lighting.

Economy and Society
Clean production process for reducing material consumption and pollution, software for waste minimization and pollution prevention, green materials for industrial application and building environment, hazards impacting environmental health, analysis of environmental risk, socio-economic and life-cycle analysis for policy-making and planning, novel compounds from marine organisms, and policy on efficient energy use.

Delivery and Assessment

There are no written examinations for our Master’s degrees, instead assessment is achieved through work based post module assignments and a work based dissertation.

We believe that applying the ideas, tools and techniques learned on the programme directly into your work environment is the best way of embedding learning in a manner that is meaningful to both you and your employer.

To be awarded your Master’s degree you must complete ten modules, two supporting events (Induction, Research Methodologies) and your dissertation. This typically takes three years on a part time basis.

Each module runs over four and a half days and requires approximately 100 hours of study time including lectures, seminars, independent study and a post module assignment. Modules are fully residential with accommodation and meals provided one of the conference centres at the University of Warwick.

Dissertations are supervised by a WMG tutor and a supervisor from your company and make up 50% of the programme.

What you will study

There are two pathways available to students studying the MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management course. Modules of study for each pathway depend upon whether students complete a 60 Credit Dissertation or a 20 Credit management project. The normal mode of study will be to undertake the 20 credit management project route.

Route One

- Sustainable Supply Chain Management (20 credits)
The module will explore the strategic need, role and value for logistics, purchasing and supply chain research within organisations in order to achieve sustainable supply chain networks in the future. Examining the major changes that are currently affecting logistics and supply chain strategies and how management in the future will be influenced by new structures, reconfiguration of material and information flows, the role of technology in evolving supply chains and the key issues in managing this transition process. This module aims to provide an integrative view of the complex inter- and intra-organisational dynamics which contribute to sustained organisational success and maximisation of competitive advantage. - Commercial Relationships (20 credits)
This module explores the
 theory and practical application that underpins the processes involved in
formation of commercial agreements and relationships with external organizations.The module will examine the

- Strategic Operations Management (20 credits)

- Economies, Markets and Decision Making in International Contexts (20 credits)
The module aims to develop the ability to analyse the macroeconomic and micro frameworks within which strategic decisions are made. To develop the ability to solve problems which relate to management decision-making in the context of changing economic and market conditions.

- Project Management and Consultancy Skills (20 credits)
This module aims to critically explore and examine project management and consultancy skills in a business and supply chain context. Enabling students to understand and explore relevant and key project management techniques and principles and the impact that they have on operations, supply chain and business processes. Students will be able to use consultancy skills to reflect, monitor and evidence the ‘management of self’ in a marketing and business context.

- Research Methods (20 credits)
The module aims to develop your understanding and research skills in a management and/or professional development context; critically reviewing a range of research methodologies and methods of providing management information for decision making.

- Management Project (20 credits)
The module explores the concept, theories and practice of project management and consultancy skills. This module builds on the research methodology skills and requirements of critical debate established throughout the program and shows how these key skills are vital within a business context to ensure rigorous decision making. It examines combining the traditional research skills with project management and consultancy skills to enable an evidenced based approach to problem solving within an organisation.

Route Two

Learning and teaching methods

You can study the MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management full-time, part-time or online. The full-time programme starts in September and February.

Full-time: Full-time students study Stages One and Two in an academic year, followed directly by the dissertation. Part-time students usually complete one stage each academic year followed by the dissertation.

Part-time: We offer part-time weekend delivery, where you come to the University for one weekend every six weeks. For those who want to tailor a programme that suits their needs, we can be flexible in terms of when, where and how often lectures take place. This is useful for organisations and associations.

Online: The University of South Wales also offers online delivery through our partners the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Please note that CIPS accreditation is not available through our online course.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Module Details

Supply chain management is a philosophy, the implementation process and the control of this process through which different entities within a supply chain aim to streamline their activities to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of meeting final customer requirements. A variety of different techniques will be investigated, ranging from conceptual frameworks, analytical approaches, to computer-based models.

Here are the units you will study:

Supply Chain Management: This unit enable you to develop advanced skills so that you can deal with problems of supply chain management across different products, locations, and companies. The types of problems studied in this course are encountered in industry (e.g. retail, discrete or continuous production and logistics service providers) as well as in service organisations (e.g. banks, hospitals and law firms). Managers dealing with such problems are known under various titles, including production, operations, supply (chain), inventory, purchasing, distribution or logistics managers.

Logistics Modelling: Most problems arising in the fields of logistics and supply chain management have sufficient complexity and detail that they require the use of sophisticated modelling techniques. This unit looks at two of the most commonly used methodologies for modelling and solving logistics problems: simulation and heuristic techniques. In both cases a computer package is used to assist solution. The techniques will be demonstrated with a range of case studies drawn from the field of logistics including transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning and vehicle routing.

Operations Management: This unit teaches operations management techniques that are relevant to logistics. The commonly used techniques of linear and integer programming will be taught using Microsoft Excel based methods for solution. You will look at case studies covering production planning, transportation, logistics planning and supply chain configuration. You will also be taught about locating facilities such as factories, distribution centres, cross docking centres and retail outlets. The effective scheduling of labour force and machines will be demonstrated, and current state-of-the art production planning models will be covered.

Strategic Logistics: This unit looks at the field of logistics from a strategic point of view. A number of quantitative techniques for strategic decision making such as decision analysis, multi-criteria decision analysis, data envelopment analysis and queuing theory are introduced in the context of logistics applications. The topic of strategic decisions in transportation modelling is then covered. The unit is completed by the analysis of a number of case studies relating to different applications of logistics with respect to financial, environmental, societal and economic objectives.

Project (Masters Logistics): This unit allows you to conduct research into a larger scale or challenging logistics problem. The project may be practical or theoretical and may arise either from the supervisor's research interests or from your own desire to study a particular topic or situation. Typical areas of logistics in which the project will be conducted include (but are not limited to) transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning, green logistics, facility location and vehicle routing.

The international community and the EU in particular, have been calling for improvement in the process of delivering aid aiming at enhancing the ability of aid organisations to react efficiently and effectively to the increased occurrence of disasters. The significance of disasters is increasing due to variables such as population growth, climate change, urbanisation and global connectivity. The impact of natural disasters such as the Tsunami on the Far East and Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans is still being felt in those regions. Human initiated disasters such as the Twin Towers collapse and the Madrid and London bombings have had an enormous impact on security systems and world travel. Biologically based disasters such as SARS and bird flu similarly have had worldwide impact.

The MSc in Humanitarian Logistics and Emergency Management is a unique programme and is the first in the world to combine the academic disciplines of humanitarian logistics and emergency management. The programme builds on the established strengths and reputation of Ireland and in particular Irish Aid, in delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need.

The organizations providing the first phase of disaster response need the capacity and capabilities to deliver goods and services quickly to those impacted by an event. This is often under difficult circumstances in foreign locations and across cultures. The organisations involved in delivering the aid also need to be responsive in order to quickly provide resources required for the basic necessities of survival in the critical period immediately after an event in order to reduce further loss of life. This programme is a multi-disciplinary programme that provides high quality academic education and professional competencies for personnel working in or intending to work in the area of humanitarian relief to deal with the matters outlined. The programme will provide humanitarian professionals with the competences to work effectively and efficiently in challenging environments.

The programme aims to contribute to the development needs of future managers and employees in public, private sector organizations and nongovernmental organisations. Providing graduates with disciplinary expertise with an additional set of management and business tools will significantly enhance their employment potential.

Reading content in relation to lecture is posted on Moodle in advance and this gives me every opportunity to prepare for lecture.
